A buxom Playboy centerfold tried to bust out — midair — from a jet yesterday amid a bad case of high anxiety.

Sexy 21-year-old model Tiffany Livingston was aboard JetBlue Flight 522 from Orlando, Fla., to Newark when she bolted from her seat and tried to open the door of the plane, a law-enforcement official said.

“She said she’s gone through this before, but never this bad, and didn’t have . . . her medication,” one source said.

Livingston was detained and placed in federal custody, with charges pending, last night.

Last year, Livingston, a 5-foot-6 brunette from Merrimac, RI, was featured as the centerfold for the debut edition of VIP, the Singapore version of Playboy, in which she was described as “not just another pretty face.

“Tiffany boasts the immaculate poise of a mature model wrapped with a bubbly demeanor,” the profile said.

Belgian prison guards are being accused of forcing female lawyers to remove their bras by pretending that they are setting off security scanners, The (London) Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

The guards at Hasselt jail in the Flemish province of Limburg insist the metal detectors are so sensitive that the metal wiring and clasps in the underwear can get them beeping.

But Joseph Rowies, a local representative of criminal barristers, said women lawyers believe the prettier the visitor, the more sensitive the scanner becomes.

“The metal detection checks seem very difficult to carry out when a pretty, young lawyer or visitor reports to the prison gate. And then it becomes a little something to amuse the guards,” he told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper.

“Time and again they let the metal detector go off. First, the shoes, then the jewelry. And, since the detector still beeps, they demand that the lady in question take off her bra.”

Rowies has told the prison authorities that he is receiving at least one complaint a month from furious female lawyers.

Laurent Sempot, a spokesman for Belgium’s directorate-general of prisons, dismissed the claims as “far-fetched.”

“We have recently tested the metal detectors. They functioned perfectly,” he said.

A witness told police two people were trying to siphon gas Wednesday night in a Tacoma church parking lot. As the witness approached and startled the suspects, the fire broke out.

Police spokesman Mark Fulghum told The News Tribune both suspects, the van and a nearby vehicle caught fire. The man was able to put out his own flames and fled before police arrived.

The witness used a garden house to douse the woman. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is expected to recover.

Firefighters put out the vehicle fires.

FEMALE marine snails living off the Perth coast are growing male sex organs on their heads after exposure to the chemical TBT, according to local researchers.

Curtin University researchers have revealed the snails are suffering from imposex, a condition that involves the development of a second sex organ after being exposed to the chemical.

Unlike garden snails, which are hermaphrodites, this species of marine snail has distinct sexes.

Curtin’s Department of Environment and Agriculture Associate Professor Monique Gagnon said studies on the marine snail Thais orbita over the past 10 years showed that although TBT contamination had declined at sites visited by recreational boats, a 100 per cent rate of imposex still existed at sites where commercial vessels were present.

“These high levels are believed to be related to the continuous input of TBT into the area over a period of years, resulting in the presence of significant quantities in the sediment on the sea floor,” she said.

NEW YORK – A 15-year-old boy damaged his eyes while playing with a laser pointer he’d bought over the Internet, say doctors who warn that dangerously high-powered versions are easily available online.

One eye expert called it “a legitimate public health menace.”

The boy’s case is reported in Thursday’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine by doctors who treated him at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital in Switzerland.

It follows two reports in June of similar accidents. British doctors said a teenager damaged his eyes with a high-powered laser pointer, and a British physician said his vision was affected for several months after he was zapped by his 7-year-old son.

Laser pointers are devices that resemble pens and emit a narrow beam of laser light. They’re used by lecturers to point out information during presentations, for example.

Laser pointers sold in the United States are subject to a power limit imposed by the Food and Drug Administration — one that won’t cause instant eye damage, although harm is still possible with prolonged exposure.

Laser pointers that exceed the FDA restriction can be found online.

The Swiss boy’s laser was 30 times more powerful than the FDA limit. He bought it to pop balloons and burn holes in paper and his sister’s sneakers, his doctors said.

One day, he was playing with the pointer in front of a mirror to create a light show, and he accidentally zapped his eyes with its green light several times.

Although he noticed right away that his vision was blurry, he was afraid of telling his parents. So it wasn’t until two weeks later, when he couldn’t hide the problem any longer, that he saw a doctor.

The vision in his left eye was so poor that he couldn’t count fingers more than three feet away. His other eye also showed severe vision loss, one that would make it difficult to read a newspaper, Dr. Martin Schmid, one of the doctors reporting the case, said in an e-mail.

Examination showed a hemorrhage in his left eye and several tiny scars in his right eye.

After four months, his vision showed some improvement but remained moderately impaired, Schmid said.

High-power devices like the one the teen bought are advertised as laser pointers and look just like low-powered versions, Schmid and colleagues wrote.

“I’m stunned that a kid can get access to … this type of power,” commented Dr. George A. Williams, chair of ophthalmology at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Royal Oak, Mich.

“This is a legitimate public health menace,” said Williams, a spokesman for the American Academy of Opthalmology. “Parents should be aware there are inappropriate lasers available over the Internet.”

The FDA has warned in the past that it has found laser pointers and toys that exceed the output limit of 5 milliwatts — five-thousandths of a watt. It rarely collects reports of eye-damage incidents like the case in Switzerland, said FDA health promotion officer Dan Hewett, so it’s not clear how often they happen.

His agency recommends that consumers make sure laser pointer labels carry a designation of Class IIIa or lower, along with a statement of compliance with Chapter 21 CFR. Hewett suggests consumers should look on the label to make sure the power output is no more than 5 milliwatts, or 5 mW.

But he stressed that even a laser product that meets those conditions can cause eye damage if a person stares into the beam long enough.

“Just because it says 5 mW and Class IIIa, FDA is not saying you can grab this laser and stare at it,” he said.

I personally can’t remember the last time I watched or listened to Beck. Early in the Obama regime, he stirred up a lot of questions and revealed how little the regular media was willing to investigate the Obama administration.

U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips said she would issue an injunction barring the government from enforcing the policy, and that the Justice Department would have the opportunity to appeal.

“Plaintiff has demonstrated it is entitled to the relief sought on behalf of its members, a judicial declaration that The Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Act violates the Fifth and First Amendments,” Phillips said.

The order came in a lawsuit against the government and Defense Secretary Robert Gates by the Log Cabin Republicans on behalf of some of its members.

The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was introduced by President Bill Clinton in 1993, overturning a previous policy of expulsion of gay service members based on the premise that homosexuality was compatible with military service.

But Pastor Terry Jones appeared to leave open the possibility he could change his mind if a proposed meeting fails to take place on Saturday in New York with Muslim leaders planning to build an Islamic center and mosque near the site of the September 11 attacks.

“Right now we have plans not to do it (burn the Koran),” Jones told ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Jones has said a Florida imam had promised him a meeting with the New York imam in exchange for canceling the Koran-burning.

“We believe that the imam is going to keep his word, what he promised us yesterday … We believe that we are, as he said and promised, going to meet with the imam in New York tomorrow.”

Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, told ABC he had not promised that the Islamic center in New York would be moved. Musri said he had only agreed to make contact with the New York organizers, set up a meeting and make the case for shifting the site.

Instead of a written autobiography, the memoir is only made up of mostly unseen and personal photographs, which took the 66-year-old musician a year to select.

But fans have reacted with anger after the publishers disclosed the memoir’s eye-watering retail price.

“This price is beyond the price that we mere mortals, who helped make him and supported him when he was less well off, can possibly pay for,” one fan wrote online.

Another added: “For that price he’d better deliver it to my house and read it to me.”

A third said: “Thanks a lot for pricing your picture book out of the hands of 98% of your fans, Jimmy – we appreciate your thoughtfulness.
