Dell is enhancing its Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) portfolio with the introduction of DVS Enterprise with Unidesk, helping to make it easier and more affordable for IT organizations with complex environments or diverse user needs to implement virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI).

DVS Enterprise, designed for organizations with demanding IT environments and diverse end-user requirements, will now be available with Unidesk’s innovative VDI management software. Unidesk integrates with technology from both Citrix and VMware to provide the vital management capabilities needed to simplify VDI implementations and help reduce overall total cost of ownership while enhancing the end-user experience.

With DVS Enterprise and Unidesk, IT organizations in industries such as education, healthcare, state and local government, and financial services can achieve streamlined IT management and an uncompromised user experience made possible by Unidesk’s unique desktop layering technology, even if users require different applications or personalization.

“Our goal with DVS Enterprise is to bring a robust and flexible end to end solution with enhanced levels of management and cost optimization,” said Dell’s Steve Lalla, vice president and general manager of the company’s mobility solutions group. “With Unidesk layering technology added to DVS Enterprise, we make it easier and more affordable for IT to deploy and manage virtual desktops leveraging the DVS Integrated Solutions Stack infrastructure. We are now able to give each end user a personal and uncompromised persistent desktop experience every time they log in.”

DVS Enterprise with Unidesk
DVS Enterprise, which combines the latest Dell PowerEdge 12th generation servers, Dell storage, Dell network components, broker and hypervisor software, services and end points including thin clients, now offers Unidesk as the desktop provisioning and management software component for Citrix® XenDesktop® or VMware View™.

The innovative Unidesk “layers” approach enables fully persistent and personalized desktops, supports worry-free user installed applications, and provides enterprise-class scalability and advanced management options. The ability to share common layers across many desktops can reduce VDI storage capacity requirements by up to 70 percent*.

“Our customers have validated how Unidesk layering technology simplifies VDI, expands use cases, and brings greater ROI to desktop virtualization implementations,” said Don Bulens, Unidesk CEO. “We’re thrilled that Dell has recognized these same value propositions, and has made Unidesk a part of DVS Enterprise. With Dell’s market presence and Unidesk’s software innovation, the many benefits of virtual desktops are finally available to all.”

“Desktop virtualization has become a disruptive force as many enterprises transition away from costly device-centric to more people-centric desktop and application delivery models,” said Chris Wolf, research vice president at Gartner. “Gartner has consistently heard from early adopters that virtual desktop deployments struggle to scale when traditional PC and application lifecycle methodologies are applied. To that end, IT decision makers should leverage modern application layering and delivery solutions in order to achieve the operating expense savings they expect, and the scalability they require.”

Customers Benefit from DVS Enterprise with Unidesk
The University of Connecticut recently deployed Dell’s DVS Enterprise solution with Unidesk in order to easily provision and manage virtual desktops for Master’s students and faculty at the School of Business.

“Dell DVS and Unidesk are a great fit for any organization looking to simplify virtual desktop deployments, deliver different types of applications, and implement VDI for a wide range of users and use cases,” said Jeremy Pollack, director of IT for the University of Connecticut School Of Business. “The combination of Dell and Unidesk has been instrumental to the success of our vPC desktop virtualization initiative from both IT operations and user acceptance perspectives.”

Availability
Unidesk is available today through Dell direct. Additional integration enhancements and service offerings are expected to be available later this year.

Desktone, Inc., the pioneer of Desktops as a Service (DaaS), and Dell announced today the upcoming launch of a cloud-hosted virtual desktop solution that drastically simplifies desktop virtualization deployments. Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) Simplified DaaS will deliver full-featured virtual desktops – powered by Desktone’s secure multi-tenant DaaS platform and delivered from Dell’s state-of-the-art data centers – enhanced by Dell’s world-class services capabilities. The new solution will soon be available in the U.S. and EMEA through Dell’s global sales team.

DVS Simplified DaaS will provide organizations of all sizes – SMBs, large enterprises and public sector entities – the ability to quickly deploy a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution to address a variety of business imperatives such as the need to support mobile workers, remote workers and call center staff including contract workers, or rapidly scale the number of desktops based on seasonal workers. DVS Simplified DaaS is ideal for organizations that want a cloud-based VDI solution, simple onboarding and management, and a low set-up cost with monthly subscription-based pricing. The solution removes barriers to traditional VDI by delivering full-featured, affordable virtual desktops from the cloud to any device on demand. By leveraging Desktone’s multi-tenant platform, DVS Simplified DaaS enables easy deployment with the flexibility to scale from a few seats to thousands of seats.

“Organizations are quickly realizing the value of DaaS, providing a full-featured desktop experience with the security benefits of a virtual desktop, and the scale and cost efficiencies of cloud computing, all in a way that can increase worker productivity,” said Steve Lalla, Vice President, End User Computing Solutions, Dell. “Desktone’s industry-leading multi-tenant DaaS platform was built from the ground up for the cloud, unlike other VDI approaches. By combining Desktone’s DaaS technology with Dell’s investments in global data centers, cloud computing and our world-class Dell Services, we will further enable our customers to drive real business results and thrive in the Virtual Era.”

“The fact that one of the world’s leaders in end user computing sees the overwhelming potential of Desktone and DaaS demonstrates the need for our technology within enterprise computing,” said Peter McKay, CEO, Desktone. “With Desktone’s help, Dell can provide the flexibility, performance and ROI required by many providers but not achieved with traditional virtual desktop technology. With DaaS, customers can get started quickly with no minimum purchases or complex deployments, making the transition easy.”

Dell DVS offers end-to-end solutions – including hardware, software and services – that extend from end-point devices to the data center and help organizations increase worker productivity, simplify IT management, increase reliability and security, and reduce cost. Dell DVS is enhanced by services for performance optimization and monitoring, analysis, design, configuration, training, support and virtual desktop management. With the addition of DVS Simplified DaaS, Dell continues to expand its existing portfolio of DVS Simplified and DVS Enterprise solutions that enable employees to work from anywhere on any device.

Availability
Dell will start offering DVS Simplified DaaS through the global Dell sales team in late May for the U.S. and in June for Europe. Plans to offer the solution in other regions will be announced later in the year.

Dell and Desktone will be offering a demonstration / sneak preview of DVS Simplified DaaS at Citrix Synergy in San Francisco, May 8-10 at the Dell booth.

Netelligent, a leading provider of cloud and managed services, today announced a partnership with Desktone, Inc., the pioneer of Desktops as a Service (DaaS), to offer cloud-hosted virtual desktops. Netelligent will leverage Desktone’s DaaS Platform, along with Cisco’s® Unified Computing System (UCS) and NetApp storage systems, to deliver full-featured virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a service on demand to any device.

Netelligent is a unified communications leader, providing cloud, virtualization, networking and telephony services to large enterprises and private organizations. Through its partnership with Desktone, Netelligent will expand its services to offer cost-effective cloud-hosted full Windows 7 virtual desktops that can easily scale to meet customer needs. By leveraging Desktone’s DaaS technology, Netelligent can provide end users with secure, convenient access to virtual desktops delivered from the cloud, without the need for costly on-site infrastructure.

“Because Desktone’s mission from day one was to provide a platform for DaaS from the cloud, we are able to pass on the efficiencies created by cloud computing but still can offer a full-featured Windows 7 desktop experience,” said Aaron Stone, CEO, Netelligent. “Desktone is clearly at the market lead because, based on their approach, customers can expect far more from what they receive from a shared session terminal service offering.”

“DaaS is making it easier and more affordable than ever for enterprises to realize the benefits of VDI,” said Peter McKay, CEO, Desktone. “Desktone’s DaaS Platform is the industry’s only multi-tenant cloud-based virtual desktop solution, designed to seamlessly integrate with enterprise IT environments and quickly scale up or down with changing business needs. This flexibility enables service providers like Netelligent to provision and deploy desktops to any end user device in just minutes at an unbeatable price.”

Desktone’s multi-tenant cloud architecture makes it easy and cost-effective for service providers to deliver virtual desktops as a service. Unlike other single-tenant solutions, Desktone’s platform lowers the cost of delivery by providing a common management and orchestration layer. Netelligent can quickly and easily provision desktops for usage on tablets, smartphones, laptops or PCs, without having to rely on physical hardware or software. By leveraging the cloud, DaaS eliminates the cost and complexity of deploying and managing virtual desktops for enterprises of all sizes.

Cisco UCS is a key component of Cisco CloudVerse®, a framework that combines the foundational elements needed to enable organizations to build, manage and connect public, private and hybrid clouds.

Teradici, the developer of the innovative PC-over-IP® (PCoIP®) protocol that enables a true PC experience for desktop virtualization, today announced a distribution agreement with Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions (ECS), a business segment of Arrow Electronics Inc. [NYSE: ARW], to distribute the Teradici APEX 2800 server offload card across Europe. A leading VMware View™ distributor, Arrow ECS offers a range of VMware products, enabling its customers to more efficiently run and implement all applications and IT services within a VMware View environment.

“With the widespread adoption of virtualization initiatives taking place throughout Europe, we see the Teradici technology as a key addition to our portfolio of virtualization solutions,” said Julien Peronneau, vice president of operations and business development for Arrow ECS in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “With this agreement, we will further enable the acceleration and growth of PCoIP technology and VMware virtual desktop implementation deployments throughout Europe.”

Through this agreement, Arrow ECS will provide its extensive network of solution providers across EMEA with the Teradici APEX 2800 server offload card. The card greatly enhances virtual desktop deployments by offloading the most active 64 displays from the server CPU, providing a consistent, reliable user experience and allowing more virtual machines per server. Compatible with all PCoIP zero clients and VMware View software clients, the APEX 2800 server offload card is fully integrated into VMware vSphere™ 4.1 and 5.0 and managed by VMware View 4.6 or later.

“With its strong ties to the VMware reseller community, we believe this agreement with Arrow ECS will further drive adoption of the APEX 2800 and PCoIP-based VDI solutions throughout Europe, providing VMware View customers with the best possible end user experience,” said Trent Punnett, vice president of marketing and product management, Teradici. “With the help of our partners, we continue to expand the broad offering of PCoIP products, and we look forward to providing clients worldwide with exceptional VDI performance, flexibility and security.”

Devon IT, a leading provider of thin client and VDI hardware and software solutions, today announced the availability of SafeBook™ for Dell Rx, the thin client notebook that enables secure, mobile computing for healthcare professionals and supports the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

A recent report from the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) shows that the biggest cause of HIPAA data breaches is theft and loss of laptops and other portable media. Many reports on laptops in healthcare suggest solutions that rely on users to secure their data or their device. Thin clients alleviate the human aspect of data security by ensuring that all data resides on the servers. Even if a thin client note book is lost or stolen, no sensitive data such as patient information is compromised on the device.

“Healthcare organizations need a comprehensive solution to secure and manage multiple device types and platforms. Devon IT has once again collaborated with Dell to provide advanced virtual and hosted desktop technologies capable of transforming the way IT pros think about computing,” says Joe Makoid, President, Devon IT. “The SafeBook for Dell Rx, based on Dell notebooks, is the latest thin client offering from Devon IT and provides all the advantages of a Dell notebook with the benefits of a thin client approach.”

Devon IT thin clients come bundled with Devon IT’s Echo™ Thin Client Management Software. Echo™ is a unique and powerful software product developed exclusively by Devon IT that combines thin client management capabilities with connection management features. Customers use Echo™ to oversee large-scale hosted-desktop deployments, and also to manage small groups of thin client terminals. Customers who take advantage of any Dell or Devon IT thin clients devices benefit from a fully integrated management approach through Echo.

“As HIPAA requirements become more defined and pronounced, we will continue to develop new solutions to advance thin client technology, and are excited to offer this latest approach with Dell,” concluded Makoid. “All healthcare organizations need flexibility, mobility and the ability to secure their patient data. The SafeBook Rx offers the ideal combination of data access, portability and security for all types of healthcare organizations to help achieve HIPAA compliance. Every healthcare IT department should evaluate the SafeBook.”

Teradici, the developer of the innovative PC-over-IP® (PCoIP®) protocol that enables a true PC experience for desktop virtualization, today announced the compatibility of its Teradici APEX 2800 server offload card for VMware View deployments on ESXi 5.0 vSphere Server.

VMware ESXi 5.0 combined with View 5.0 improves VDI user experience through a brand new virtual GPU capability, which enables better graphic performance, starting with the 3D/aero features present on Windows 7 OS. However, this new feature is enabled at the cost of increased server CPU utilization. The Teradici APEX 2800 server offload card enables IT managers to reclaim these CPU cycles and eliminate the need to re-architect the VDI environment already in place, all while ensuring a reliable and consistent user experience even as VDI loads change.

The APEX 2800 monitors the activity of all the VMs on the server and dynamically offloads the most active 64 displays, reducing server CPU utilization by up to 50 percent. The card is also fully compatible with VMware DRS and vMotion. By consolidating the number of View users on the same server, and leveraging View Administrator interface for its management, the offload card helps to reduce the overall cost per user.

“With our dedication to developing and providing solutions that highlight and complement the benefits of VMware View deployments, we are pleased to announce full compatibility on ESXi 5.0 with the APEX 2800,” said Trent Punnett, vice president of marketing, Teradici. “We are committed to maintaining full compatibility with future releases of VMware View and vSphere to ensure the APEX 2800 remains future proof for our growing PCoIP-enabled VDI customer base.”

Centrix Software, a leading provider of workspace computing solutions, today announced the availability of WorkSpace iQStart, a newly upgraded, free inventory tool that delivers detailed assessment of large-scale desktop and application environments, providing essential data to IT teams planning transformation projects and for ongoing monitoring of their existing infrastructure.

“Upfront assessment of the desktop environment is a critical part of any technology change and ongoing IT initiative. Having the right data about the software and hardware estate ensures projects go more smoothly and the benefits of the technology investments are realized faster. As user workspaces become more complex, comprising desktop, virtual and cloud applications, this type of data is even more important,” said Paul Burke, director of products, Centrix Software. “Using WorkSpace iQStart, IT professionals can make more informed early decisions when planning and piloting new platforms and applications, such as Windows 7, Office 2010, desktop/application virtualization, and see where greater efficiencies and savings can be delivered using analytics.”

Available for download at http://www.centrixsoftware.com/products/workspace-iq-start/registration/, WorkSpace iQStart, formerly named WorkSpace Discovery, allows organizations to:

Catalog installed software and hardware

Identify user requirements associated with assets

The free tool also provides the ability to see potential areas for cost saving and optimization across the desktop environment, for example where installed assets are not being used at all or as they were intended. Centrix Software provides an easy license key upgrade to WorkSpace iQ, an advanced analytics solution that helps IT professionals further improve the efficiency of technology service delivery. This augments WorkSpace iQStart with the richest, deepest insight into the usage of applications, content and devices, enabling advanced planning solutions for Windows 7, desktop virtualization and cloud projects, and continuous IT rationalization and management.
