Photographers take note! Paul’s got some GREAT advice for you guys! ENJOY the interview and photos below!

1. What lead to your decision to become a professional photographer?

After the corporate “thing” did not quite pan out for me I took the plunge to follow my passion for photography for good. It was a risky decision that I should have taken in my early years when I think about it. There’s nothing better than doing what you love and getting paid to do it.

2. How long have you been in the industry as a photographer?

I’ve been in the industry for over seven years full-time, but if I add the eight years I was trying to juggle my passion with a career in corporate America, that’s a total of 15 years.

3. What process is involved with photography?

Oh, this is a multiple choice question. Beyond posing the subject, setting the camera to achieve the correct exposure and pressing the shutter to produce an image, the process involved in photography is a constant WIP (work in progress). But with the digital era and digital cameras,  I can honestly say we’ve come a long way from the film days and dark room processing times. Nowadays image are produced and viewed instantly in seconds from a LCD screen. It was not the case in the pre-digital era and that to me makes the difference between what I call a digital photographer and skillful traditional  photographer who has mastered the entire process from the film era and can easily apply it to the new range of digital innovation at his/her disposal.

4. What does photography mean to you?

Okay, I may sound nerdy or geeky but photography is such an important part of my life that I wonder sometimes what it would be like for me to give it up. Can’t even imagine it. Yes I’ve been in a long committed relationship with my camera(s) and I’m hooked (LOL).

5. Do you have a specific style of photography that you prefer?

Fashion and Beauty Power shoots are my favorite style because they involve such high level of creation and precision, and almost perfect execution at all times. I also like being behind the scenes in event photography capturing candid and priceless moments.

6. How do you think photography has changed today as opposed to the past?

From the big chunky machine used in the early days to take still pictures to digital photography today, several books can be written. But the way digital technology has revolutionized the industry is unique to me. From the little cell phone to powerful guns from major brands, Canon and Nikon, we can say that taking photographs has become more and more of a daily routine for almost everyone. With improved software, a broader sharing system, and high-definition photographs and social media plugs, it will be quite interesting to see in the next decades what other changes will be made in this market.

7. Sometimes you hear of photographers having a muse. Who or what is your muse?

Interesting question and quite unexpected because it involves an in-depth explanation of the artistic “penchant” of a photographer. The Muses in ancient Greek mythology, poetry and literature are the goddesses who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. Mostly known nowadays, as the compliment to a real woman who inspires creative endeavors. I’ve always been fascinated with the natural beauty of a women. One of my upcoming project concepts {will be} to celebrate women of different ages, ethnicity and background for 2013 and will involve creating power shoots with little or no make up on the models/subjects, with their natural hair, and light pieces of clothing around their bodies. All images will be in Black and White. The challenge will be to find models that will espouse the concept from beginning to end, but I’m hopeful that once we start the casting call we will have the right candidates.

8. What advice do you have for someone who wants to pursue a career as a Professional Photographer?

Just follow your passion and have fun shooting, first and foremost . Be ready for low ball offers, low paying gigs and rejections (LOL) but never give up. Let your work and professionalism be your best-selling tools. Keep your standards and values, as high as possible and my fair warning is, you’ll never stop learning behind that camera. Good luck!

Most of my clothing is black, grey, or brown.  I know it sounds depressing, but I truly enjoy my wardrobe palette.  There is nothing better than the perfect black blouse.  A grey sweater heats me up in more ways than one. 

However, there is one “color” that is allowed to mingle freely within in my closet – WHITE.  A well-cut and well-executed white jacket of the ideal fabric weight is beyond chic and sets off all of my black and grey garb.  I know you’re saying that white isn’t a real color, but to that I say whatevs.  It’s the closest I normally get without feeling weird and out of my comfort zone. 

I have not forgotten the so-called rule about not wearing white after Labor Day.  However, as you can imagine, I do not care much for rules.  Here, I have assembled some white winners for this fall/winter.  I have even, wait for it…, found some perfectly lovely and debauchee-approved white shoes.  I know.  I know.

P.S. Unless you’re an expert, lay off the red wine while wearing.  You’ve been warned.

London Fashion Week 2012 started on this past Friday, September 14th and will last through Tuesday, Sept 18th!  London Fashion Week is one of “The Big Four” amongst fashion weeks around the country, along with New York, Milan and Paris. LFW is organized by the British Fashion Council and is held at the Somerset House in Central London.  One of LFW’s sponsors is Mercedes Benz and a host of others.  Many notable designers participate in London Fashion week, such as Burberry, Moschino and Vivienne Westwood.
