This trailer for Super Splatters, the revised version of The Splatters for Steam, is beyond silly. It does what not enough game trailers do, however -- it gets the point across efficiently. The new release is happening on June 26, 2013 for PC and Mac, followed by a Linux port "shortly after."

Changing direction mid-air is as fun to me now as it was last year on Xbox Live Arcade. Super Splatters is still 30 percent off if you pre-purchase now. Seven bucks is, from what I've played of the original game and a new pre-release PC build, a great price. Using a mouse feels like a step up, and I tend to play most of my PC titles with a gamepad.

Okay, so the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy is really over, but that doesn't mean there aren't fair few untold tales about it's development.

In an interview with Eurogamer, ex-BioWare writer Drew Karpyshyn sheds light on what were discussed as possible endings to the Mass Effect trilogy. It seems the initial ideas all placed a heavy emphasis on biotics and dark energy, with the Reapers acting as some sort of guardians to the universe. "Dark Energy," Karpyshyn says, "was something that only organics could access because of various techno-science magic reasons we hadn't decided on yet. Maybe using this Dark Energy was having a ripple effect on the space-time continuum...then we thought, let's take it to the next level.

"Maybe the Reapers are looking at a way to stop this. Maybe there's an inevitable descent into the opposite of the Big Bang (the Big Crunch) and the Reapers realize that the only way they can stop it is by using biotics, but since they can't use biotics they have to keep rebuilding society -- as they try and find the perfect group to use biotics for this purpose. The asari were close but they weren't quite right, the Protheans were close as well."

The full interview goes on to detail even more ending possibilities, which in hindsight all sound pretty cool. Just don't torture yourself with the thought that they would have necessarily have been better. The ideas were all undercooked, and ultimately couldn't go anywhere for one reason or another. Karpyshyn continues, "I find it funny that fans end up hearing a couple things they like about it and in their minds they add in all the details they specifically want. It's like vapourware -- vapourware is always perfect, anytime someone talks about the new greatest game. It's perfect until it comes out."

Ideas left out of a games usually find themselves into sequels though, so who knows. Maybe some of these ideas can crop up in future Mass Effect projects in some form.

One of those actors is not like the others. Can you tell which one?

As great as it is to hear a familiar voice, there is a lot going on in this promo beyond Poke-celebrity involvement. There is no way you'll notice everything on the first, or even second viewing. If you want to be a smart guy and cool guy, try to name all the Pokemon in the teaser. I'll be surprised if you catch 'em all.

From her animated GameTrailers series, Once Upon a Pixel, to her contributions to various art books and fan 'zines, she has perfected an art style that melts even the coldest of hearts.

On hiatus from her main webcomic, Jailbird, Ashley has taken over Legend of the Valkyrie on Namco Bandai's ShiftyLook site. Based on a Japanese-exclusive action-RPG series that dates back to the Famicom days, the comic was originally drawn by Fernando Heinz Furukawa, a South American comic artist who has worked on a number of StarCraft graphic novels. Though the strip had very detailed and dynamic art, it didn't quite sync up with the writing, which shoehorned Internet humor and attempted to appeal to otaku culture with basic Japanese phrases.

Beginning June 4 with the strip entitled "Time for a Change," Ashley has assumed both art and writing duties, and the comic is much better off for it. I'm simply annoyed that it took me so long to learn what she's been up to lately. Anyway, enjoy the comic, which updates twice a week.

And as an added bonus, here's Ashley's original rendition of series heroine Valkyrie as posted on her art blog, no marios allowed!, last September.

Similarly, the sharing library [is something] we won't be able to deliver at launch."

Speaking to Polygon, Whitten said users "have to be connected" for the cloud-based processing to work, as you'd expect. "All of the things that require the Internet will require the console to connect. We want and expect most people to take advantage of those things, but we also want to give people the choice that they can play offline."

The family sharing concept was one I liked, in theory, as was not needing to keep the disc of an installed game in the tray while playing -- but not at such a high cost. Not even close. In light of today's news, Whitten also confirmed that there will be a day-one patch for the console.

I understand that the majority of the Late Night viewership may not be hardcore fighting game fans, but if you wanted to show off spastic button pressing then why not show the opening moments of Ryse? Sadly, I'll have to wait it out like the rest of you.

Beyond the standard real-time combat, players can pause the action to plan out -- and then execute -- their next attacks. This should give Transistor a different pace from the studio's last release, Bastion, while still appealing to people who dug that title.

Microsoft has reversed its policies. There's only a one-time system setup that requires an Internet connection -- no daily check-ins. Discs work like they have in the past -- they'll need to be in your console's tray -- so trade-ins aren't going to change. Also, no regional restrictions. Best part? The update was written by Microsoft's Don Mattrick.]

After what already feels like an eternity of warranted criticism over Microsoft's mandatory online check-ins for Xbox One and other related DRM policies, the company has seemingly taken the backlash to heart. The always-online requirement has been dropped, meaning users won't have to check in daily and game discs will function as they do currently, reports Giant Bomb. Sources tell the outlet that the new polices will result in the following:

No more always online requirement

The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours

All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360

An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console

All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline

No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs

Region locks have been dropped

The official Xbox website's FAQ for Xbox One has been updated today stating that "As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. Some of this information is no longer accurate -- please check here for the latest." At the time of publication, the link is unavailable. We'll know what's been changed soon enough.

I was so convinced that Microsoft was committed, that it had the infrastructure in place and wouldn't turn back no matter how much heat it took. It feels so great to be wrong.

You can imagine why this would take so long.

Speaking to Polygon, Nordic business and product development director Reinhard Pollice specifically mentioned the action-RPG Titan Quest as something the publisher would love to bring back. And, personally, he'd like to see a continuation of the unlikely Wii game Deadly Creatures.

According to Pollice, Nordic is going through the list of IPs on a case-by-case basis. Outside of the obvious (Darksiders), which franchises are you hoping survive the death of THQ?

Nordic Games' plans for THQ titles in early stages, Deadly Creatures high on the list [Polygon]

The ability to share levels through Steam Workshop sounded like the real draw until I heard about Hello Games' collaboration with Valve and Mojang, the results of which can be seen in this new trailer. I'm a total sucker for crossovers, even if they've been done time and time again.

"Lately pretty much all of us have been playing on our PCs more than our consoles, especially at lunch, and you know that means Team Fortress 2," writes Hello Games. "Like, we've clocked up over 4000 hours in it between us and have so many hats. Just for fun Aaron started adding TF2 characters into Joe Danger and I was in love with how good they looked. We completely had to make them happen for real, so we called Valve, and now it's a real thing!"

The entire Team Fortress 2 lineup is playable, as is Minecraft's The Player (aka Steve) and Pigman. The latter game will also introduce block-filled levels to Joe Danger. A fun little bonus for PC players, to be sure.

For those of you who aren't aware, after a proposal to Miyamoto from a Capcom employee, two Oracle games were commissioned by Nintendo for the Game Boy Color as a follow-up to the incredibly successful Game Boy title Link's Awakening. Just like the Mass Effect series (but six years before it) among a select few other classics, you could transfer progress to another game. Certain parts of the narrative are changed to essentially turn the game into a full sequel rather than an isolated experience.

Here's footage of tactical gameplay in The Bureau: XCOM Declassified to go along with the usual news that, yes, post-release DLC is happening. The August 20 launch on Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3 isn't exactly right around the corner, but someone deemed today to be the day to talk about such things. Declassified's "narrative-driven" add-on will arrive first on Xbox 360.

That's actually all there is to it for now. There's also going to be a side mission named "Codebreakers" for folks who pre-order the game. A government facility tasked with intercepting and decoding transmissions has gone radio silent, and it's up to your squad to figure out what went wrong. Yep, that sounds suitably optional. Find screenshots for this mission below.

Offering the latest update to IGN, Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines says it's been frustrating for all parties involved.

"It's simply not good enough," explained Hines. "We're not going to just proceed blindly with something that isn’t good enough. We've been very specific about why, and we've been very specific about the whats. When that gets addressed and changed or whatever, at that point we can give an update. But nobody's disappointment is greater than ours.

"We spent a lot of time and money and effort trying to make this thing happen and support folks," he continued, "but at the same time, you just can't keep throwing money at it and saying, 'Sure, it'll eventually work.' You have to have the discipline to say, 'It's not good enough. It's not hitting the quality bar. Why isn't it? We've been at this for a while, and what we have is not what we talked about.' So that's where we are."

On the bright side, I'm so numb to the bad news over Prey 2 that this isn't the least bit surprising. Commenting on the rumors from the development side, Hines said that "I think all of the stuff that you've heard at this point has been from one side of this, and it's been somebody putting spin on it, like, 'Here’s what happened.' No, that's your version of what you think happened. I haven't heard from anybody yet that actually sat in the room."

Can you imagine? User Grief.exe found the following lines in the steamui_english file:

"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%.
Find this for yourself by updating to Steam Beta and going to Steam > Settings > Beta Participation and then looking for the aforementioned file in the /Steam/Public folder.

The slightest deviancy in mechanics can turn a thrilling affair into a mundane and unexciting one. For the past few years, From Software's Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have perfected this formula and championed the genre.

After seeing a hands-off demo at E3, I wouldn't be surprised if Deck13's Lords of the Fallen gives From Software a run for its money. If this happens, it's because Lords of the Fallen looks like it'll strike that exact same chord with players -- tough as nails, but doable once you slow down and figure out your approach.

Right now those suggestions are less than flattering. "The Xbox One is terrible," reads the first item. It's also "ugly" and "a joke."

Microsoft's proprietary search engine, Bing, would have you believe a different tale.

Entering the same search into Bing offers up one single suggestion: "The Xbox One is amazing."

To the casual observer, it looks like Microsoft is using its own pointless relic of a search engine to falsify public opinion about a heavily criticized product. The games features no music outside of boss battles, each of which get their own musical accompaniment to highlight the features of that particular boss. I think it's important to hold back when necessary, so it really shows restraint not to have music everywhere in the game.

Director Yui Tanimura shared with us his thoughts as to why the game doesn't feature music outside of boss battles and hub areas:

"Because this game involves paying so much attention to your environment, to your surroundings, not just visually, but with sound, we felt that the implementation of music outside of the boss battles would get in the way of the actual strategizing throughout the game. I feel that being able to really immerse yourself and dive deep into the actual world as if you’re the character themselves, we thought the music would get in the way of that. But for the boss battles, the music obviously helps pump up the situation! So that’s basically the behind-the-scenes answer."

I have to admit that I've often found myself imagining how various locations in Dark Souls would sound with music, but I have absolutely no complaints about the sound in these games.

Miyamoto confirms this outright stating, "I wouldn't say that I've ever made a bad game, per se, but a game I think we could have done more with was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link."

He goes on to state the limitations of the NES as a reason for his personal failure, saying, "I think specifically in the case of Zelda II we had a challenge just in terms of what the hardware was capable of doing. It would have been nice to have had bigger enemies in the game, but the Famicom/NES hardware wasn't capable of doing that.
Sony's launched a new video promoting the PlayStation 4's interface, specifically showing off the ability to pause one's game to check out shared videos and the PlayStation Store. You can hold your game, go start a download, and resume play. Neat.

The other interesting bit of information is the ability to download games in parts, rather than all at once. The handsome gamer in the video, who I've decided to name Chase Glistener, is given a choice to download the single-player and multiplayer aspects of Killzone: Shadow Fall separately, so he can more swiftly jump into a game with his online friend, Romulus Salamander.

There also seems to be some sort of love story between Chase and a woman I'm calling Malfeasance Brickfist. The implication seems to be that playing Knack on PS4 will make all of the girls want to do a kissing on your face.

Of course, the cynic in me suggests nothing in the video will be as sleek and quick as it'll be in real life, but after dealing with the PS3's slow-ass, convoluted interface, it's definitely looking to be a step in the right direction.

Although it can be expected, through a Famitsu Weekly interview it is now confirmed that the game will continue after the cliffhanger in Kingdom Hearts 3D, and will feature the "final battle [with] Master Xehanort," which the core entries have been leading up to this entire time. In short, although it doesn't preclude future Kingdom Hearts games, Kingdom Hearts III is not going to be a gaiden. and will finally bring an end to the saga that started all the way back in 2002.

Other bits of the interview include hinting at a playable Riku and Kairi, updated visuals to keep the game more in-line with Disney illustrations, an improved AI system, and a more badass Sora (now that he's gone through the Mark of Mastery Exam). More info will be revealed this October at TGS and at the D23 Expo in Japan.

It seems the scythe is wielded not just by publishers, however, but by members of the gaming press itself.

According to Naughty Dog, popular European gaming magazine Gamereactor was provided artwork for a cover story on The Last of Us, art that featured dual protagonists Joel and Ellie. Naughty Dog, rightly proud of both its creations, was confused to find that Gamereactor had wiped Ellie from the artwork, leaving only Joel to look gruff and manly.

"Hey Gamereactor, appreciate the coverage," tweeted Neil Druckman, "but is there a reason why you removed Ellie from the cover we provided?"

According to readers, Gamereactor offered the Ellie-less art alongside several other cover choices for the community to vote on. This seems to be its justification, despite the original artwork including Ellie.

Some people will swear there's no issue with women in the game industry, but more and more, we see examples of outlets and companies that seem to have a distinct problem with them. Entities are going out of their way to hide women from our sight, for a number of silly reasons, and it'd be cool if it stopped.

Jimmy Fallon hosted the PlayStation 4 during his post-E3 videogame week with Sony's Mark Cerny, who showed off Knack on the new console. I'll say it outright, Mark Cerny was much easier to watch than Phil Spencer, and the entire appearance felt more natural as a whole.

For instance, rather than going the route of spouting constant buzzwords and "television integration," Cerny namedrops Katamari Damacy like it's genuine, and the whole affair doesn't feel nearly as scripted as Microsoft's appearance. I think Cerny was the perfect choice, as his less-corporate image and game design experience helped increase the appeal for pretty much every demographic.

They also re-iterate the full support of used games and the lack of a required internet connection, which the crowd cheers for, and Jimmy briefly celebrates (as Jimmy tends to do on a constant basis). I'd say it was a success.

Here in Scotland we love eating deep-fried food, whiskey, having a shockingly low life expectancy, and fighting. Especially the last one. So it's surprising to me that outside of Medieval II: Total War, there's not been much in the way of games set in Scotland. Highland Wars looks to reverse this by setting its class-based multiplayer in the unusually sunny Scottish highlands.

Players will engage in close-quarters combat but will also have to gather resources and build defences and war machines. The game is currently on Steam's Greenlight service so if you fancy bathing in the blood of rival clansmen, give it a vote up. Just remember to cry "FREEDOOOMM" whilst doing so to get yourself in the spirit.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number picks up after the events of the original game and focuses on two different groups of people you'll be playing as. While both groups are very different from one another, they both happen to be dealing with the same subject matter: Hero worship. The "hero" in this case being Jacket from the Hotline Miami, who has made waves after going on his killing spree against the Russian mob.

A new story, but that original brutal satisfying gameplay is very much intact. You'll be smashing, slashing, shooting, and slamming people's bodies into bloody pulps all to the cool tunes of the '80s-inspired music once again, and that's a good thing.

The more I see of the 3DS version of the game, the less confident I am in that. Depending on how different the two versions are, Nintendo may have accidentally beaten themselves at their own game with the Smash Bros. on 3DS. If they're both pretty much the game, but the game costs less on the 3DS and looks this good, then the Wii U version may suffer for it.

Of course, Nintendo may go the business savvy route and sell both versions of the game together in a $60 bundle. That would do a lot to motivate 3DS owners who were otherwise noncommittal to the Wii U to take the plunge. Either way, it's great to see the 3DS flex its muscle a little bit here. The mix of vibrant colors, black outline, and top-notch models and textures makes for a look that's arguably more attractive than its HD counterpart.

Well, I'm here to to tell you none of that matters people, because Thief has water arrows. Yes, they are back, and still make absolutely no goddamn sense to me. Sometimes the results are really good, and other times they are downright disastrous. Batman: Arkham Origins creative director Eric Holmes (no relation to our Holmes...I think) is aware of this, and confident their work is up to par.

"I would say that people have the right to be cynical; they have the option to be cynical," Holmes said in a interview with GameSpot. "I think as soon as you've got the pad in your hand, you're going to see that this game is authentic and uses the same underpinnings and core mechanics of the previous Arkham games."

I suppose a good amount of skepticism is healthy, so long as it doesn't leave that "Wait and see" zone. Personally, I'm not a fan of prequels, yet actually have hopes that Origins can be a better game than Arkham City, as the follow-up just didn't click with me like the first.

In any case, the story is still my biggest draw. WB Montreal is staying very hush-hush about it, but certainly doesn't lack for confidence, saying, "I think it's a very important Batman story and I think fans are going to love that probably more than any other thing in the game."

That's a bold statement, Mr. Holmes. Still, seeing a young, green-as-grass Batman going up against criminally underrepresented villains like Black Mask and Deathstroke -- yeah, I'm in.

Meanwhile, the Dragon's Dogma franchise, post Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, is presently persisting as a free-to-play Vita exclusive, Dragon's Dogma Quest. Capcom is adamant about turning the series into one of its flagship franchises. Maybe Deep Down is something like a spiritual forebearer to Dragon's Dogma, allowing Capcom to test the next-gen waters and its new engine with a fresh IP before going all in with another Dragon's Dogma?

On the topic of Deep Down, Svensson noted, "It’s still quite far off. Ono-san tweeted we’d have it at E3 next year." Could Capcom up and run both games simultaneously despite perceived overlap? Or does having Deep Down at E3 next year back up the notion of it coming out first while Dragon's Dogma gets a new game announced at the conference?

Former PC Gamer writer Tom Francis hoped his debut title Gunpoint might do well enough to allow him to quit writing full time and become an indie dev -- that has happened and then some.

With the use of some charming graphs on his blog, Tom points out that after strong pre-order sales, Gunpoint flew off virtual shelves to the point where he is now well equipped to work on future titles. What's really interesting is that he was advised not to put out a demo of the game until after the game launched. This advice came from people with "industry experience" and the claims that it would hurt Gunpoint's sales.

It's refreshing to see someone stick to their guns and act in the best interest of gamers instead of chasing the fabled "lost sales." Playing the demo of Gunpoint definitely convinced me to buy the game as well as Fraser's glowing review. If its success allows Tom to keep making games in the future, then that's good news all around.

Let out a sigh of relief. We knew the company wouldn't tamper with Mario or Pokemon for its monetization experiment, sure, but we now know which property is going free-to-play and everything's going to be okay. It's Steel Diver, aka that submarine title people bought so they'd have something, anything, to play on their 3DS.

"There is something we're doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game... It's going to be very fun," Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN. "We're exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint -- it's going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting."

Nintendo is said to be concentrating on the balance of providing entertainment value vs. needing to earn some money back from players. This new Steel Diver will also see a physical release and, according to Miyamoto, is "something that we're hoping to be able to show relatively soon."

I met Keiji Inafune at E3. I interviewed Keiji Inafune at E3.

I've achieved everything I've wanted to accomplish in my relatively short career as a games journalist. There is literally nothing else for me to do except pack my things and move on. I'm kidding, of course, but I'm not joking about how big a dream come true this was.

My meeting with Inafune was a complete surprise. Each of the Destructoid writers had been handed a list of appointments, and I saw Tecmo Koei on my schedule. I rightly assumed it was to discuss Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, but I had no idea whether I'd be speaking directly with someone from the dev team or not.

If I had known Keiji Inafune, the man whose work has had such a profound impact on hobby and my life, would be standing behind that door, I would have come prepared with a better list of questions. Nonetheless, I stepped in the room, put on my most professional face, and did my absolute best not to squeal like a schoolgirl.

On the topic of FIFA 11 finally bringing PC and console parity to the franchise, Wilson said, "Even though there were some PCs on the marketplace that could run that engine, the lion's share of PCs on the marketplace could not," noting that by 2010, the target audience of FIFA players with PCs finally had, on average, machines powerful enough to handle EA's engine. The situation seems to have repeated itself. Wilson says it's possible for Ignite to eventually make its way to PC, but, "[f]irst, the average hardware specifications of PCs -- not just PCs in general, but the PCs of those who would buy FIFA on that platform -- need to catch up."

I suppose it makes sense. The Ignite engine was designed for consoles, where EA Sports plies most of its wares. Given how many people buy FIFA each year, it makes sense to assume the average player doesn't have a beefy PC. Still, is EA shortchanging itself not having most of its sports franchises on PC? What about not having technical parity between the PC and console releases of one of its best-selling franchises?

EA Sports Ignite doesn't support PC, but it one day might, says EA Sports head Andrew Wilson [Polygon]

Rooms are now sequentially linked to one another, with certain rooms having multiple exits. You may not be able to access an alternate exit the first time you encounter a room, so the mapping system will allow you to easily backtrack once you acquire whatever it is you need to open the previously inaccessible exit.

After seeing the game at E3 last week, I have to say that development seems to be progressing nicely since its early stages at GDC earlier this year. The visual style is greatly improved as you can see from the detailed backgrounds in the above screenshot, and the addition of new gameplay gimmicks like disappearing blocks and surface physics should make for a great experience when the game hits PCs this summer.

Did you have the opportunity to enjoy the first Escape Goat? Will you be joining this purple goat on its second adventure?

In an update posted on its Kickstarter page, developer Harebrained Schemes have announced the new release date as July 25, 2013. The team have said this extra few weeks is to allow more time for bug fixing and polishing.

Whilst it's disappointing to have the game delayed, I'm appreciative of any extra efforts being made to make the game as bug-free as possible. I'm already toying with the idea of making a single-player campaign of my own over the next few months. Harebrained Schemes is even releasing the editor files for the game's main campaign to let users remix and re-work the story.
