Garrett County Weather

I usually get my Garrett County weather report by walking out my front door. I look at the Deep Creek Lake forecast and it never jives with what is going on in Bittinger MD. I recently heard that there is NO NOAA weather station in Maryland. I am not sure if that is true but when I tune in my scanner I can pick up PA, VA, and WV but no MD.
Good news is there is a new website dedicated to Garrett County weather and the phenomenons that occur here. GARRETTCOUNTYWEATHER.COM

Penn Alps Restaurant Review

Penn Alps bills itself as a old roots restaurant with its gift shop and artisan village conjuring thoughts of authentic home style cooking. Forget that.here Expectations of essential service; timely greeting, prompt beverage order, follow up on food and check presentation were not met. Not being greeted at the door is a pretty big turn off for me and bad way to start any dining experience. Understanding that others also need attention when the dining room is sparsely filled on what should be restaurant prime time it usually is another indication.
On our second visit everyone opted for the buffet, a showcase of the best of the best.
The salad bar was adequate the rest disappointing. In our opinion not much is cooked, a lot is fried at this restaurant. Canned fruits and vegetables and packaged restaurant service food are the norm and BLAND.     Mostly fried items shrimp, fish, clams and the chicken looked absolutely perfect. The first bite had a pleasant crunch but there was absolutely no seasoning or flavor. Accompanying sides of baby carrots in orange juice and butter, limp green beans, what we think was velveta shells and cheese also lacked any punch. The mashed potatoes were ok but the packaged gravy hurt them.
    Ample dessert selections looked stale and tasted the same. There was one shining star. the white chocolate macadamia nut cookie was quite honestly the best ever remembered. 15 bucks for a salad and these cookies actually seemed reasonable the cookies were that good and the commercial sherbet.
     This easily accessed from the freeway restaurant can make a living on the weary traveler needing a bite. The gift shop surely adds to the profit margin. The setting and Penn Alps restaurant are very charming. It is the rest that leaves a bad taste. However that cookie was devine.

Personally responding to fires usually means someone is losing property. In this case the fire departments responding were able to save 2 deep creek lake area homes from destruction. October Trout Stocking Underway

Although the dry spell continues the Department of Natural Resources has been doing their best to insure more great fishing. The October stocking season has begun and about 20,000 fish will be finding new homes in the following weeks.
Beware of invasive species! DNR reminds anglers to clean their gear between streams or outings to prevent moving around unwanted invaders like didymo and whirling disease. Anglers can wash their gear with dish soap, a 5% salt solution or one of the convenient wader wash stations at some locations.
DNR’s trout stocking information telephone line, 1-800-688-3467, will be updated weekly beginning October 1 so that anglers may find out if their favorite area has been stocked. Stocked areas will also be posted online at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries once stocking is complete.

Garrett Trails Moonlight Hike

As a friend of Garrett Trails I sometimes lead hikes on some of Garrett Counties amazing trails. The last one was along the Eastern Continental Divide on the Meadow Mountain Trail. It was the harvest moon and a perfect night for a hike. Even though the leaves were still on the trees the moon was bright enough to hike with just the eyes.

I was fortunate in that my guests were avid star watchers. Not only was the company great I learned many things about the night sky. We were able to identify several planets and really check out the surface of the moon.

To top it off I also learned some great new tricks for photographing things at night.

Garrett County Black Bears

The leaves are turning and the weather cooling off and the bears know it. According to a DNR estimate the Garrett County black bear population is over 600 bears. that is 4 bears per 10 square miles. Knowing that on average Md black bears weigh between 125-400 pounds and some more than 600 pounds, that is a whole lot of bear running around. They are hungry now trying to increase their fat reserves in anticipation of a long winter. Bears are mostly like my hippy friends, organic vegetarian. However they will occasionally eat fish and garbage.

What do I do if I see a bear? Bear attacks are extremely rare if you are out and about in the woods make some noise. If you run across a bear unaware of you back away, if you spot a cub? Be aware that mom is probably close by. Above all stay calm, DO NOT RUN, avoid direct eye contact, and appreciate the opportunity to come in contact with such a unique animal.

MD's Highest Point Hoye Crest

I was in the neighborhood and realized I have never been to the highest point in MD. Located on Backbone Mountain in the southern tip of Garrett County is the Hoye Crest. At 3360 it is the biggest elevation in the state. The hike is moderate in difficulty due to the elevation gain but the trail is easy to recognize and wide.

I met a father and son team from Oregon out 'peak bagging', attempting to climb the highest points in all 50 states. There is a picnic table at the top but no water source. As always remember pack it in pack it out

I recently took my lunch at the WORLDS ONLY mountaintop whitewater facility. Located atop WISP mountain. This man made river is completely adjustable and great for beginners or experts alike. Many national and International events are also held here. Even if your not getting wet the scenery is awesome.
