Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren are back in the lineup, but Jaden Ivey joins the injured list

Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren are back in the starting lineup as the Detroit Pistons face the Minnesota Timberwolves in a road matchup at Target Center. Unfortunately, Jaden Ivey has joined the long list of Pistons on the injured list and is out for tonight’s game. Still, having the team’s best player makes the game partially watchable, and having Duren supply some rim pressure at least opens up the offense a bit. All that being said, the Pistons are +16.5 dogs, and that just feels amazingly correct. Less than 10 of these miserable games to go after tonight.

They lost by 25 points, and it somehow felt like more

You ever wondered what it’d be like if the Motor City Cruise played against an NBA team?

Monday night was a good example.

The Detroit Pistons, without four of their starters, rolled into Madison Square Garden on a six-game losing streak. It wasn’t long ago that the Pistons had won two-straight games, which isn’t a lot, but for these guys, it’s kind of a lot.

That feels like forever ago.

The Knicks weren’t all that healthy either — down Julius Randle, OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson — but that didn’t matter. When you’re playing Detroit, you don’t need to be at full strength. As long as you’re breathing, your chances of winning are prettyyyy good.

Donte DiVincenzo scored a career-high 40 points after hitting 10 triples while Josh Hart had a triple-double as the Knicks toyed with Detroit and cruised, I mean cruised, to an 124-99 win over the <s>Cruise</s> Pistons.

This was nothing like the last matchup between these teams — the controversial ending where Ausar Thompson was hit sticked at half court and the Pistons blew a late lead — but ti makes sense considering the lack of talent on the floor.

You can make an argument that the only Pistons who played tonight and will see more than a handful of NBA minutes next season were Jaden Ivey, Marcus Sasser, James Wiseman and Troy Brown Jr.

I’m not gonna belabor it because the kid has been going through one hell of a slump the last month, but Ivey was horrible tonight. He missed 12 of his 14 shots and finished with just nine points. With his jumper broken like it is right now, I don't think you can rely on him to carry any sort of offensive load — and that sucks.

I’m just so conflicted with him right now.

I know the intangibles are awesome, and the athleticism and speed is unmatched... but there’s something missing. The on-court production just isn’t right. I dunno if it's fit under Monty, fit with Cade Cunningham, the limitations of his game or all of the above?

The shooting has been a killer, though. If you remove his red-hot March, he’s shooting 29% from downtown this season. The jumper is nowhere close this month and for all the physical talents, it really puts a cap on what he can do. He’s just not a natural creator unless he gets a head of steam toward the rim and dumps off or swings out to the corner.

Teams don’t let you do that when you’re throwing up bricks from outside 18 feet.

Honestly, the Pistons organization has quit on the season. If they sit Cade and Jalen Duren down the stretch — which I think they will — it’s going to be a real litmus test for Ivey.

Some would say they’re giving him the keys to learn on the job like he did last season, but I’d disagree and point out that they’d be retarding his development by putting him out there with this abomination of a roster.

The laundry list of nobodies who played tonight is incredible. The likes of Malachi Flynn, Tosan Evboumwan, Evan Fournier, Chimezie Metu, Buddy Beoheim, Jared Rhoden are irrelevant. What they do these final 10 games does not matter for the Detroit Pistons.

It’s just for personal gain, tape for their agent to send to teams overseas.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

The Pistons are a mess, a dumpster fire burning brightly into the night.

I don't really know how else to describe it.

Troy Weaver talked about fielding a competitive team in February and March, not sitting guys and trying to win games.

Guess we’ll have to wait till next year on that, too.

What is there left to root for?

The Detroit Pistons are playing the second night of a back-to-back against the New York Knicks and are once again missing the majority of its meaningful rotation. All the same players who missed Sunday’s lopsided loss to the New Orleans Pelicans will miss tonight. That means no Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, Ausar Thompson, Quentin Grimes or Simone Fontecchio.

Presuming the Pistons don’t pull off a miracle victory, it will be Detroit’s 60th loss of the season with 10 more to play. The Pelicans game featured 39 minutes from 10-day big man Chimezi Metu, the unboxing of Troy Brown Jr., the return of Malachi Flynn, and plenty of minutes for G League players Tosan Evbuomwan, Buddy Boeheim and Jared Rhoden. Expect more of the same tonight. Get hyped.

The Detroit Pistons injury report is concerning

Strap in, folks, because the Detroit Pistons will be facing the New Orleans Pelicans for a matinee game today without six of the first seven members of their ideal rotation. Yes, the worst team in the NBA is somehow even more decrepit. Today, Detroit will be playing without starting point guard Cade Cunningham (knee), starting big man Jalen Duren (back), its most reliable bench scorer Simone Fontecchio (toe), best perimeter defender Ausar Thompson (illness), best big man defender Isaiah Stewart (hamstring), best bench defender Quentin Grimes (knee), and bench reinforcements Stanley Umude (ankle) and Taj Gibson (hamstring).

Well, at least we will surely get no shortage of Jaden Ivey with the ball in his hands. And Troy Brown should get some run! Maybe Zion will do cool stuff that isn’t toooooooo embarrassing.

Any chance there is a mercy rule?

The Detroit Pistons are quickly running out of time if they hope to avoid the ignominy of having the worst record in franchise history. They currently stand at 12-57. That means they have 13 games remaining to get an additional five wins. It won’t be easy, especially not tonight against the visiting Boston Celtics. Not only are the Celtics one of if not the best teams in the NBA, but the Pistons are more banged up than at almost any point in this miserable season.

The latest blow came earlier Friday when the team announced Stanley Umude would miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle. Umude, who has toiled in the G League, was poised to get serious NBA minutes for the first time as Detroit’s win rotation was decimated even before the Umude injury.

Ausar Thompson is out for the season with a blood clot issue. Simone Fontecchio remains out with a big toe contusion. Quentin Grimes is out with continued knee issues. Shifting to power forward and the news doesn’t get any better. Isaiah Stewart is lost for the season with a right hamstring strain and Taj Gibson is out with hamstring soreness.

I’m not thinking this game is going to go too well for the Pistons. The only chance Detroit has is that Boston hands over the game via sitting out most of its lineup. Already, four our of five of the Celtics’ starters are listed as game-time decisions, with only Derrick White assured to play.

Discussing Cade’s last second flub, March Madness hot takes and more!

The Pindown: A Detroit Pistons Podcast is your home for fan-driven Pistons content. Hosted by Wes Davenport, from Motor City Hoops and producer of the Pistons Pulse Podcast, and Blake Silverman, DBB’s resident draft expert. The guys bring a reasoned analysis to a uniquely interactive show.

Spring has sprung, March Madness has begun, and Cade Cunningham was the one to torch the Pistons best chance at victory this past week. Clearly, it’s March in the D. This week, the guys breakdown that fateful play vs. the Heat and if Monty Williams should have called time out. Blake and Wes also discuss the difficult decisions that this Pistons organization will need to make this offseason surrounding Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and the fit of this core with Monty Williams’ offensive system. Finally, they explore the possibility of trading this year’s first round pick and note the differences between Coach Casey and Coach Monty to this late point in the season.

Lawsuit alleges defendants conspire to prohibit in-person contact to increase use of video and phone telecom services, with jail getting cut of the profits

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores’ Platinum Equity LLC and Securus Technologies LLC are among the parties named in lawsuits against county jails and telecom firms in Michigan. The lawsuits claim St. Clair County and Genessee County were “part of a quid pro quo kickback scheme” with telecom providers to charge families “exorbitant rates to communicate with one another through ‘services’ such as low-quality phone and video calls,” according to reporting from the Detroit Free Press.

St. Clair County allowed in-person family visiting until 2017, while Genesee County allowed the practice until 2014. The lawsuits seek preliminary and permanent injunctions in both counties that would end the in-person visitation ban and damages, the Free Press reports.

The complainants in both lawsuits are individuals with family members who are currently or were recently in the two jails. The St. Clair County lawsuit names the county, Sheriff Mat King; Securus, Platinum Equity, and individuals including Gores, Platinum Equity partner Mark Barnhill, and president and CEO of Securus and Aventiv Technologies David Abel.

The Genesee County lawsuit names the county, Sheriff Christopher Swanson, Global Tel*Link Corp., and Deb Alderson, the company’s president and CEO, according to the Free Press.

Please read the local reporting for the full story (and support local journalism so stories like these are still able to be reported!).

The story speaks to the families of those involved in the lawsuit and the hardships they faced in trying to communicate with family while not being able to be physically present.

Gores has talked about hoping Platinum Equity’s stake in Securus could allow it to be a “change agent” in the industry. The private equity firm has also talked about the actions it has taken to reduce costs previously, including cutting call rates by 45%, calling for the elimination of site commissions, calling for more taxpayer-funded models for these agreements, and providing nearly half a billion minutes of free phone call time.

I’ll go back to the other time I’ve written about Securus Technologies’ involvement in the prison telecom industry in 2020:

We are still at a fundamental truth, and that truth is — making something less bad doesn’t make it good. ...

For me, though, there’s no good way to be in a bad business. There is no profit motive strong enough for me to look past the fundamental exploitation involved. A bad business is bad for business, and I hope Tom Gores sees that fundamental truth someday soon.
