Woah guys, Hello! To say this kitchen reveal is a long time in the making is an understatement, and I am thrilled to reveal our newly renovated kitchen and mudroom addition! This project has been in the works since 2017, and with the help of my trusty friend SketchUp, we were able to come up with the perfect plan for our home through countless iterations. We were asking ourselves big questions, like what does this house need that would make our life inside its walls the most comfortable? Our goal was to create a functional kitchen with room enough to cook and have friends over, a mudroom and utility closet that would work hard for our family, a powder room that would be easily accessible yet tucked away and private, a patio that could be used for summer cookouts, AND that we keep it all historically relevant to the era of the home. We were willing to make a big investment in our home to achieve that. Our home is a 1910 four square/craftsman mix, and we were committed to respecting its historical architecture in all of our renovation plans. Think 1910 in the details but with better plumbing and insulation. We came up with a plan that did a handful of things for us and how we experience our home. Our plan was to turn the space that was formerly the kitchen, pantry and mudroom into a single kitchen which would encompass the entire back quarter of the house instead of just a small portion of it like it had. We would extend out the back of the house, adding a small but mighty 11’x11′ addition which would gain us a main floor powder room, a coat closet / pantry / utility closet and a mudroom off the rear entrance to the house. That solved a lot of the flow issues we were having on the interior. The addition also solved a number of issues on the exterior of our home too – I’ll make sure to follow up once the backyard recovers from last year’s excavation, but to sum it up quickly, the addition would create an intimate nook we could use as a patio and allow us a better entrance into the yard and garden. Historical Details The most important thing to us was to maintain the historical integrity of our home. We were committed to preserving […]

Hello people! I thought I’d be back with this post much earlier, so instead of chopping them up into multiple posts I’m going to give it you all at once. Be ready for three months of real life to fly by in the time it takes to read this blog post. Let me get you to up to speed. In April of 2022 we broke ground on an addition to our 1910 Minneapolis home. The addition was going to solve a few problems for us. It was going to give us the space at the back of our house to create a main floor mudroom, half bathroom and pantry/utility closet. The addition of these three rooms will allow us to remove the walls where the previous mudroom and pantry were, therefore making the kitchen twice as large. The old kitchen, mudroom and pantry kind of all inhabited the same space and together it all felt very clunky. On the exterior of the house the extension of the house gives an opportunity to create better flow to our our backyard, and works as a screen to create a private patio area near the back of our house. The addition itself is not large, it’s approximately 110′ square feet, but does so much for the flow of our house. For previous progress and plans you might want to check out these posts: Kitchen Plans, Kitchen Update #1, Kitchen Update #2. We’re starting this update with drywall, which makes all the difference. In a matter of days the place feels entirely different. It’s wild to see years of planning come together and finally be real! Dry wall rocks. The far wall is a funny one. We’ve got a lot going on here so let me walk you through it. Starting in the corner on the right. That nook is what used to be a backstair case that connected to the main set of stairs to the second floor. The stairs were removed long before our time. To the left of “the nook” is the chimney, and to the left of the chimney is the main plumbing stack behind drywall. This wall has a fuck ton going on, and we used cabinetry to give it a cohesive-ass look. Hang tight for that part. This is the larger opening to the dining room. We increased the opening from 30″ to 84″ to mimic the size […]

Hello! The kids are back in school, everything is awesome. Even though my kids operate themselves for the most part these days, they still interrupt my mental focus just enough to always feel like I’m never getting anything done. Look at me now, two days into school, I am at home, beds are made, messes cease being created, and I have time to share what’s been slowly happening on the kitchen and addition over the summer. The last time I was on the blog we had just started breaking ground on the new small addition on the back of the house. To catch you and or remind you, this addition will soon be our new mudroom, a half bath and a main floor utility closet. At the same time we are taking the space that use to be our kitchen, pantry and mudroom and replacing that with a larger way more efficient working kitchen! Let’s begin the tour shall we? It was an exciting day when the back wall of the house was torn down to reveal the new flow from kitchen to mudroom. Our carpenter Ben, spent nearly a week doing demo on the space before he could begin to put it back together. I have so much admiration for Ben, he has created this whole space nearly single handedly and it’s super impressive to see. I feel for him that he has to kill himself in the heat of the summer, but I hope that he feels like he has created something that will be loved for a long time. This is the interior framing getting close to completion. We removed a set of side of side-by-side windows in the kitchen and replaced them with new wood windows. The old windows were not the right size for the space, they were too tall and wouldn’t have worked. We opted for wood windows by Marvin and they will be stained to match the windows in our living and dining rooms. In this photo you can see the framing of the addition, and windows are beginning to be framed in the kitchen. Scroll to the next photo to see a 3-D rendering of this same view. This is the same view as the raw space above. While all of this building was happening I had some projects of my own to work on. I had rescued this sink from FB […]

Hey Guys! Hope you have all been doing well. I've been doing great over here. I've been eagerly awaiting the beginning of our kitchen remodel and half bath/mudroom addition. It's started in early May (apprx 6 weeks ago) and it's slow going, so I've been taking a lot of snap shots as the days roll on to share here, and make time flash forward in blog minutes. To remind you, this whole project is set to wrap up the last week of October 2022. We are adding on to the back of the house which will allow us to take make our current kitchen/pantry/mudroom into one large kitchen and the new addition will allow space for a mudroom, coat closet and half bath! Outside we'll be adding a new stoop, walkways and patios. We are stoked!

People of the internet, greetings and salutations from my little neck of cyberspace. I wanted to write a post and share some exciting news, after 12 years of wanting to renovate our dysfunctional kitchen we are finally able to make it happen and we are going big! We have decided to extend the back end of our house and add on a mudroom, closet and half bath. This will allow us to make our kitchen larger than it currently is because we’ll be able to absorb the old mudroom and pantry into the future kitchen space. We’ve been working with a design/build team since November 2020(!) and plan on breaking ground early summer 2022. When we bought our place in 2010 the kitchen was almost a deal breaker. We actually had passed on the house because of the kitchen and then our realtor asked us to come see it again and we agreed that the house should be ours, and someday we’d remodel the kitchen. I never thought someday would be so far away, but I’m glad it is because now we can really afford to do build a kitchen that we’ll love for a long, long time. Drink it in! I’ve been working on my own designs of the kitchen for years, I probably started in 2018 and it’s evolved a lot since. I’m really glad we have taken our time with this because we’ve really been able to soak up ideas and change things around. Our design/build team has been great too, they’ve taken my sketches and fine tuned them adding some great insight and ideas. Would you like to see some sketchup renderings, because I’d love to share them with ya. Just a little disclaimer, these renderings are not the official drawings, it’s just crazy old me needing to imagine how the kitchen will act and feel from all angles. Some of the cabinetry will be changing size and function, and paint colors are not set in stone, but generally you get the idea of how the space will work. The architectural drawings throughout the post are the correct dimensions for cabinetry, cabinet doors, and drawers. Our current entrance into the kitchen is a very narrow 30″. We will remove a few sections of the wood paneling and widen the opening. This is how it will look from the living room. The living room currently has the […]

Hey, wow! I never expected it to be nearly a year in between posts. Shit. How fucked up was that last year? What an absolute major bummer quarantine was. I felt like before covid I was in such a groove with the blog, and then it turned quickly turned into not being able to give any effs about anything and just surviving day-to-day. That sounds dark, but that year was dark! My kids did distance learning from March 2020 to June of 2021. They went back to school 8 weeks ago. I was pretty deeply depressed for most of the winter. It was hard to do most things; as I’m sure you all experienced in your own ways. Anywho, on the up and up! It’s nearly the end of October. I have been enjoying transitioning my house back to a house and away from being everyone’s everything – school, office, shelter, entertainment, social hub. You should see me; I’ve been cleaning closets, reorganizing, making beds daily. I’m just a veritable whirlwind of order and cleanliness. Jokes aside, I needed to get the house back to being a house before I could even think about coming back to the blog and sharing again. I did do a few projects here and there over the last 18 months – it just didn’t feel like sharing them was the right thing to do at the time. Now that I’m feeling more settled I thought it might be a good time to begin to catch you all up. I’m going to title this series “The Lost Year” and then share projects I’ve done around home and the cabin – most of them at the cabin. The first project I’m sharing is what I think is close to the final iteration of the cabin kitchen! To catch you up to speed, the cabin kitchen started out as a very basic kitchen that had been showing some wear and tear. The cabinets are all built from standard lumber with simple plywood doors and drawers. It all starts summer 2017 soon after moving in. My Ma and I removed the upper cabinets that blocked the view from the lake. I updated the floors and painted before snow hit the ground the first winter, that update went a long way. The VCT floor tiles were a great solution for updating the kitchen and I was able to cover […]

My life has been consumed with helping my kids with their school work ever since March, and my priorities have had to shift a lot. I feel privileged to be have the availability to spend time helping my kids, but I have missed being able to work on projects. I've been slowly chipping away at their bedroom makeover project. I have had a paint brush at the ready trying to steal away 15 minutes here or there if the time allowed ever since we "moved back" to Minneapolis at the beginning of the school year...

A quick little background, we jumped on the home improvement bandwagon just like everyone else did this year. We were looking for a project that was fully DIY to bide time this summer, but we also wanted the project to be something that could help us enjoy and get through the winter - which I'm sure will end up being a rough one. Enter, The Barrel Sauna! Not only did it provide me with a project for the summer, but it's gonna make winter a whole lot more doable. Hot humid therapy during those freezing cold winter months is gonna slay.

Last week marked the third year that Jeff and I have been cabin people! I thought it would be the perfect time to look back and see what's been happening during the last three years. Sometimes I don't realize it, but it's been a lot. We've really made this cabin our own, and I'm so happy to see how far it's come...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has felt an array of feelings since quarantine began. Most of the time I fall somewhere between a complete lack of motivation, and sheer boredom. And then every once in awhile I'll get a sudden burst of energy and I'll do all the things all at once. That is what happened once I started gaining momentum on the new sauna area of our front side yard at the cabin...

About three months into quarantine we realized that the home goals that we had made for the year were quickly changing. We had talked about getting the house painted and adding onto the deck at the cabin maybe even getting a hot tub, but all of that began to melt away as the days of quarantine lingered on. Then, after a champagne fueled morning, we decided we needed a project so our weekend mornings wouldn't be entirely filled with just drinking champ.

We’ve spent the better part of the last 4 months at the cabin. We head home from time-to-time to check the mail, check on the neighborhood and mow the lawn. I’ve been missing my garden in a major way. I look forward to spring more than any other time of year. I love tending to my gardens, paying attention to every tiny detail and watching closely as they grow bigger and stronger. That being said, I am so impressed (and a little sad) with how well my babies are doing without me this year...

Well folks, I've been struggling with how to start my first blog post in awhile and I decided that maybe a recap is the right thing to do. As I am sure many you have experienced the ebbs and flow of this pandemic and what it doing to all of us mentally. For me, it's easy to become overwhelmed by anxiety or depression and I've been struggling with that a lot since March, as I'm sure many of us have. I've also struggled to find my drive to be creative.

Guyses! Today I am going to teach you how to install wallpaper on an accent wall. This is a job that is fairly easy, a tiny bit stressful, and 100 percent totally worth it. This my friends, is the fifth (!) time I have wallpapered, so I pretty much consider myself an expert. Stick with me and you’ll be alright.

The spring is by far my favorite time of year. Us Minnesotan’s savor any and all outdoor time we can get in the warmer months. Every spring season I try to focus on a small space and give it a bit of TLC and this year I have teamed up with All Modern to update a warm and sunny spot in the corner of our deck. I’ve done a lot of updating to our yard and patio at our Minneapolis home, and now my attention is moving towards the cabin...

We’ve been so happy with our new range and range hood at the cabin. It looks great in the space, except for the patch tile patch job that needed to be done. Perhaps this has happened to you? Maybe you needed to remove an over the range microwave or hood vent and realized the new replacement didn’t fit quite the same way as the old and your easy update has turned into a can of worms, because now you have to tile to patch. Whatever your situation may be, patching tile is way less intimidating than you might think...
