THE PESO is expected to move sideways against the dollar this week, with a preemptive move by the central bank this month seen to give the currency support ahead of another aggressive rate hike from the US Federal Reserve.

The local unit closed at P56.28 per dollar on Friday, rising by seven centavos from its P56.35 finish on Thursday.

The peso also appreciated by eight centavos from its P56.36-a-dollar finish on July 15.

The local currency opened Friday’s session at P56.35 against the dollar. Its weakest showing was at P56.39, while its intraday best was at P56.27 versus the greenback.

Dollars exchanged went up to $789 million on Friday from $647.45 million on Thursday.

The peso strengthened versus the dollar on Friday following the downward correction of the dollar against major global currencies amid recession risks as well as the European Central Bank’s (ECB) bigger-than-expected rate hike, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in a Viber message.

The ECB on Thursday raised its benchmark deposit rate by 50 bps to 0%, its first rate increase in 11 years and a departure from eight years of negative interest rates, to rein in runaway inflation. It also raised its main refinancing rate to 0.50% and signaled more hikes.

The dollar lost ground on the heels of the business activity data, as investors weighed slowing economic activity against easing inflation, Reuters reported.

The dollar index fell by 0.047%, with the euro down by 0.18% to $1.021.

For this week, Mr. Ricafort said the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) surprise 75-basis-point (bp) rate hike on July 14 could lend support to the peso ahead of the Fed’s July 26-27 meeting, where it is expected to continue raising borrowing costs aggressively.

“The surprise +0.75 local policy rate hike to 3.25% effective July 14, 2022 is meant to support or at least stabilize the peso exchange rate, as part of the toolkit related to the exchange rate vis-a-vis the inflation-targeting framework since 2002 and the price stability mandate,” Mr. Ricafort said.

“This is a preemptive move on a possible large Fed rate hike of 0.75-1.00 to 2.50%-2.75% (upper range of the Fed target) in the next Fed rate-setting meeting, which would make the interest rate differential in favor of the US dollar … after US CPI (consumer price index) again posted a new 40-year high of 9.1% that could require more aggressive Fed rate hikes/monetary tightening to bring down elevated inflation,” he added.

UnionBank of the Philippines, Inc. Chief Economist Ruben Carlo O. Asuncion likewise said the BSP’s off-cycle hike, as well as lower oil prices, could prop up the peso against the dollar.

US crude settled down by 1.71% at $94.70 per barrel last week and Brent ended at $103.20, down by 0.64% on the day, Reuters reported.

Mr. Asuncion said the Fed’s review, where it is expected to raise rates by at least another 75 bps, will be the main driver of foreign exchange trading this week, as well as month-end corporate demand for the dollar.

He gave a forecast range of P56 to P56.60 per dollar for this week, while Mr. Ricafort expects the peso to move from a narrower band of P56 to P56.40. — D.G.C. Robles with Reuters

More people are cancelling their video subscriptions to save money in the face of the cost of living squeeze, with under-24s most likely to walk away.

In the second quarter of the year, almost 1.66 million services were dropped from the likes of Netflix, Now and Disney in the UK and more than a third of these were directly attributable to people tightening their belts. Half a million households cancelled all their subscriptions, according to Kantar, the market researcher.

It comes after a trend that started in the first three months of the year, when 1.5 million video on-demand subscriptions were cancelled.

Now, in a reversal of previous trends, the decline is being driven by younger audiences as they turn to free alternatives such as the BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and TikTok.

Household budgets are under intense pressure, with prices rising by 9.1 per cent a year, the highest inflation rate for 40 years, and with the Bank of England warning that inflation could reach 11 per cent within months.

According to Tom Harrington, of Enders Analysis, life is only going to get tougher for the platforms because “it isn’t just their direct competitors but every other household expense they have to worry about. Expect an acceleration of consolidation, bundling with other products, and new, desperate moves. We are already seeing cuts in content spend and staff redundancies. A number of these services already didn’t make much sense in terms of their business models; this stress will expose them even more.”

In a change to its business model, Netflix said last week that it was working with Microsoft to introduce a cheaper service, funded by advertising, by the end of the year. The company said it expected to have lost two million subscribers in the second quarter.

Kantar’s report also looks at which services are doing well. Amazon Prime is storming ahead with the biggest share of new subscriptions, of 37.9 per cent, which the research group attributes to a generous free trial period, as well as the entertainment channel being part of a broader package of services that the retail powerhouse offers, such as free delivery.

When customers were asked how they rated the streaming services, Netflix suffered a fall in popularity, “driven by a perceived decline in value for money and satisfaction with the quality of the shows”. A third of those leaving the service put it down to price rises, despite the release of Stranger Things and Ozark in the quarter.

Disney+ now gets higher satisfaction ratings than Netflix for the quality and variety of its programmes. It also recorded an all-time low in terms of planned cancellation rates. Andrew Skerratt, global client manager at Kantar, said this was because of the binge-worthy content on the platform, such as Grey’s Anatomy and 24.

Apple TV’s acquisition of British-themed content such as Ted Lasso and The Essex Serpent has proved popular. It won its highest ever share of new subscribers and fewer customers than ever plan to cancel the service.

Netflix, which has suffered the sharpest share price reversal of any of the Big Five technology companies this year — it is down 68 per cent since January 1 — is due to report second-quarter figures tomorrow.

Ministers have approved controversial plans to allow agency workers to replace striking workers, voting through the regulations on Monday night by 289 votes to 202.

While the business minister, Jane Hunt, said the change, which was accelerated as a result of the ongoing rail strikes, was needed to remove the “outdated blanket ban” on using agency workers to cover official industrial action, critics say the measure is akin to a “scab charter”.

Hunt told the Commons: “Some trade unions appear to us to be looking to create maximum disruption in a bid to stay relevant rather than constructively seeking agreement with employers and avoid conflict.”

The TUC had urged MPs to vote against the “pernicious anti-union measures”, which were deplored as “anti-business and anti-worker” by Labour’s deputy leader, Angela Rayner.

“They will risk public safety, rip up workers’ rights, and encourage the very worst practices. And above all they will not prevent strikes, they will provoke them,” said Rayner.

Hunt denied safety concerns, and said these changes will not affect the right to strike.

The Conservative MP Alec Shelbrooke voted against the plans, arguing that they diminish the intended impact of industrial action.

“If people are going to lose their ability to have an effect when they withdraw their labour, then I am afraid they have effectively lost the ability to withdraw their labour,” the Elmet and Rothwell MP said.

This was the first time Shelbrooke had voted against the government since being elected in 2010.

The Labour MP Ian Byrne said the government should be voting to protect workers’ rights, rather than introducing a “scab charter for bad employers”.

This change comes hours after further strike action was confirmed, this time involving drivers at eight train companies who are preparing to walk out over pay.

Though agency workers can now replace strikers, questions remain over the numbers of spare teachers, nurses and train drivers who can step in as replacements.

With both the National Education Union and NASUWT threatening strike action in the autumn term, the Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis offered to return to the classroom should those threats materialise.

Separately, a Labour motion to annul regulations to increase the level of damages a court can award in the case of unlawful strike action was defeated by 290 votes to 201.

Deaths from heart disease and diabetes have increased due to the pandemic, according to doctors at a recent forum.

“Pandemic lockdowns and quarantines have seriously impacted the health of many Filipinos by limiting their movement and keeping them from engaging in exercise,” said Dr. Rodney M. Jimenez, Philippine Heart Association (PHA) secretary, in a July 7 media briefing organized by For Your Sweetheart PH, an advocacy campaign that raises awareness about the link between diabetes and heart disease.

“This was exacerbated by heightened anxiety, as well as the availability of streaming services and social media,” he added.

Ischemic heart disease was the top cause of death in the Philippines, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed. The number of deaths due to the disease increased to 136,575 in 2021 from 105,281 in 2020.

Meanwhile, deaths from diabetes mellitus (DM) increased to 48,000 in 2021 from 39,720 in 2020.

“A lot of Filipinos living with diabetes don’t realize that if they don’t learn to manage their condition properly, it can lead to heart disease. This is especially true for people who have vices, are hypertensive and unmindful of their diet, and lead a sedentary lifestyle,” said Dr. Francis I. Pasaporte, president of Diabetes Philippines.

Managing either or both conditions, plus whatever other co-morbidities that may arise, will require a change in lifestyle and behavior, he added.

DIET, EXERCISE, CONSULTATION
A memory device for healthy habits is “5100” said Dr. Jimenez:

“You know, sitting is the new smoking,” he warned. “Other offices have standing desks now to promote movement.”

Dr. Carolyn Narvacan-Montano, president of the Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM), recommended that Filipinos go back to seeing their doctors regularly and not just when there’s something wrong.

“While online consultation remains a good option to get medical attention, hospitals and clinics can once again accept patients with other conditions by putting in place policies and measures that will protect the health and safety of everyone coming in their building against COVID-19,” she said.

In the meantime, those who are not yet diagnosed but may be prone to high cholesterol levels and blood pressure can use online tools to gauge the level of their health risks.

The automotive industry is known to be the one industry that is not the most environmentally friendly.

With over 600,000 licensed cars in the UK alone, environmentalists are regarding how to improve their impact on the planet.

From the daily commute to automotive production, roads are busier than ever, and many people rely on them for their everyday tasks. Similarly, the end of a car’s life doesn’t mark the end of its environmental impact.

With events like the Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Scandal shining a light on the environmental shortcomings of the world’s major car manufacturers, drivers are taking a more conscious approach than ever towards their consumption.

As diesel vehicles cause more than four times the pollution than petrol cars, you must regularly maintain your car, along other things. If you have purchased a diesel car between 2008 and 2019, you may be eligible for a diesel emission claim, depending on the brand of the vehicle.

With the automotive industry evolving, it becomes more and more prominent to become greener and serve the planet as best as possible. Here are five ways you can contribute to the environment by making your vehicle greener.

A well-maintained car is an environmentally friendly car and keeps it running smoothly! You’re doing your part if you’re already showing up for your maintenance schedule. Regular maintenance ensures your car runs more efficiently, reduces carbon emissions, and helps you save money. It ensures that your car parts optimized for monitoring and reducing emissions are performing well. Regular tune-ups can result in a 4 percent boost In your gas mileage.

Purchase eco-friendly tires

Eco-friendly tires are great for reducing emissions and boosting gas mileage. They’re not only made from environmentally safe materials such as synthetic rubber bands but also feature improved rolling resistance. Now readily available, eco-friendly tires are also designed to reduce overall fuel consumption. As a general rule of thumb, check your tires every month to ensure they’re also properly inflated.

While it’s tempting to hit a little harder on the gas pedal when traveling down empty stretches of highway, it can save a lot of fuel to maintain a steady speed and reduce how often you ta breaks. As speeding can decrease the fuel economy due to tire rolling resistance and air resistance, maintaining your speed limit to 35 to 50 mph is ideal.

You can improve fuel economy by removing excess weight from your vehicle. This includes removing your roof sack if it’s not in use as it can spike fuel consumption. The more you store in your vehicle, the more likely gas will be used to haul all that load.

Use safer cleaning methods.

A few differences, such as cleaning your car, can make a huge difference as an eco-friendly auto-owner. You can switch to a waterless car instead of the hose to save a lot of water. Usually, the typical hose and bucket car wash at home uses 90-140 gallons of water, and a published car wash uses 45 gallons per wash. But a waterless wash? Just 4-6 ounces of water!

Using waterless products and typical sprays, you can quickly clean your car and leave a protective finish on.

Conclusion

Although the automobile industry is polluting, with these tips, you can ensure your vehicle is greener and positively impacts the environment.

MOODY’S Investors Service has maintained China Banking Corp.’s (China Bank) Baa2 credit rating with a stable outlook, citing the lender’s strong capitalization and profitability.

“The international credit watcher cited stable capitalization and profitability, which support business expansion, and sound liquidity as China Bank’s credit strengths,” the bank said in a disclosure to the local bourse on Wednesday.

China Bank’s rating from Moody’s is a notch higher than the minimum investment grade and is in line with the country’s sovereign credit rating.

“The improvement in the bank’s capital since 2019 has been higher than the average of its peers, reflecting a combination of low loan growth from the pre-pandemic level in 2019 and increased profitability,” China Bank quoted Moody’s to have said in its report.

China Bank booked a higher net profit in the first three months of the year as interest earnings improved and loan loss provisioning declined.

The lender’s net income was at P4.9 billion in the first quarter, rising by 37% from P3.6 billion in the same period of 2021.

The bank’s common equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio has also increased through the years: from 13.8% in 2020, to 14.9% in 2021, and to 15.5% as of end-March 2022

Its assets likewise grew by 12% year on year to P1.1 trillion as of end-March.

As of March, China Bank reported higher core operating profitability of 1.9%. The lender’s return on average assets was at 1.7%, the highest among its rated domestic peers.

Moody’s said the improvement in the bank’s profitability in the first quarter of 2022 was driven by a higher net interest margin (NIM), rising to 4.3% during the period from 4.2% a year prior.

This was driven by low interest and an easy liquidity environment, which led to a significant reduction in funding costs, the credit rater said.

Meanwhile, the bank may face asset quality risks resulting from the concentrated loan book and a modest funding profile, with a relatively high share of corporate deposits, Moody’s said.

Business loans, which are less susceptible to economic disruptions, comprised 80.1% of China Bank’s gross portfolio. The bank’s nonperforming loans (NPL) ratio also improved to 2.4% year on year from 3.8% as of end-March.

“While China Bank’s market funds/total tangible assets is lower than most of its peers that Moody’s rate, the bank’s liquid assets/total tangible assets remained largely stable at 30.8% as of end-March 2022,” China Bank said.

Moody’s said it could upgrade China Bank’s baseline credit assessment “if the bank’s asset quality reverts to pre-pandemic levels and NIM improves in a rising interest rate environment.”

The debt watcher last week also affirmed its Baa2 long-term deposit ratings on Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. and Bank of the Philippine Islands, also assigning a stable outlook.

China Bank’s shares closed unchanged at P27 apiece on Wednesday. — K.B. Ta-asan

Heathrow has been told to cut passenger charges for airlines each year until 2026 by the Civil Aviation Authority.

The regulator said the reduction in charges reflected the recent rebound in passenger numbers, but would still allow the airport to invest.

But Heathrow, which wanted the charges raised, said the move would undermine the delivery of key improvements.

The charges are paid by airlines, but can then be passed onto passengers via airfares.

The fees go towards operating terminals, runways, baggage systems and security.

At the moment, the average charge per passenger at Heathrow is £30.19, and the CAA has said this will fall to £26.31 by 2026. However, Heathrow wanted to increase it to £41.95.

The CAA said the reduction in the charge “reflects expected increases in passenger numbers as the recovery from the pandemic continues and the higher level of the price cap in 2022, which was put in place in 2021 to reflect the challenges from the pandemic at the time”.

In December 2021, Heathrow was given permission to raise the passenger charge from £19.60 to £30.19.

Richard Moriarty, chief executive of the CAA, said the cut in charges was “about doing the right thing for consumers”.

“We have listened very carefully to both Heathrow Airport and the airlines who have differing views to each other about the future level of charges,” he said.

“Our independent and impartial analysis balances affordable charges for consumers, while allowing Heathrow to make the investment needed for the future.”

However, Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kaye said the regulator “continues to underestimate what it takes to deliver a good passenger service, both in terms of the level of investment and operating costs required and the fair incentive needed for private investors to finance it”.

“Uncorrected, these elements of the CAA’s proposal will only result in passengers getting a worse experience at Heathrow as investment in service dries up,” he said.

Mr Moriarty told the BBC’s Today programme that the strength of the recovery “with more passengers coming in” meant charges could be lowered.

But he said the cap would still allow for £3.6bn investment by Heathrow, including new baggage systems for terminal 2.

Earlier this month 5,000 passengers were hit by Heathrow flight cancellations after problems with the baggage system led to luggage piling up.

Mr Moriarty said that problems of disabled passengers being left on planes after other passengers had got off, highlighted by BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, meant the airport must “raise its game”.

“When it comes to disruption, everyone in aviation wants to avoid the scenes that we’ve seen over the last couple of months,” he said.

“Everyone is working really hard to bring new people into the system with recruitment and we’ve also put pressure on the airlines to make sure their schedules over the next few months are deliverable for the passenger”.

He said the proposals should take £4 off the cost of a ticket from Heathrow by 2026. At the moment, the £30.19 charge makes up about 5% of the cost of a typical fare from Heathrow to New York.

Shai Weiss, the chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, said the regulator “can and must go further to lower the cap” from its proposals.

“With travel recovery underway, our collective focus should be on upholding the best possible experience for customers with fair charges, especially with consumers facing cost of living pressures and our global Britain aspirations at stake.”

The plans put forward by the aviation regulator are its final proposals, with a final decision on the charges due in the autumn.

Once the CAA has made its final decision on the charge, both the airport and airlines will have the option to appeal against the decision to competition regulators.

NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said on Thursday that it is “significantly closer” to interconnecting the electricity grids in Mindanao and the Visayas after it completed key components of the project, including facilities in areas where they will link.

In a statement, the privately owned power transmission company said it is done with the construction of the cable terminal stations in Santander, Cebu and Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte, as well as the installation of two 92-kilometer 350-kilovolt (kV) high voltage direct current (HVDC) power cables and two 92-kilometer fiber optic cables.

NGCP said these “critical” components of the P52-billion Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project “are now complete and ready for energization.” The Mindanao grid will be linked to the Visayas grid via an HVDC system, which has a 450-megawatt initial capacity.

“We hoped this would finish on time, but factors beyond our control required an adjustment to our project timeline. We are working double-time to complete the overhead transmission line portions and advance the project to its commissioning stage to connect the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao grids,” the company said.

It said site acceptance tests were conducted at the Dapitan and Santander cable terminal stations to make sure the installed facilities meet NGCP’s requirements.

The company targets to complete the project by the end of the year.

“NGCP continues to appeal for the support of the local and national government to push this into fruition. Delays in local government permitting, and right-of-way issues from slow judicial processes and unsupportive landowners continue to delay our efforts,” it added.

NGCP said the target completion date remains the same even after encountering delays because of the pandemic. The delays were caused by restrictions on the entry of foreign experts, work suspension, and manpower reduction.

The submarine cable component of the project was originally scheduled for June 2021 after work started in November 2018. But the first submarine cable was damaged by a third-party vessel and repair was completed only in November 2021.

Another completed component is the energized Lala-Aurora 138-kV transmission line, which was finished on Feb. 19, 2022, to improve the reliability of power transmission services between Lanao del Norte and provinces in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Up for completion are other components such as the Dumanjug bus-in to Colon-Samboan 138-kV transmission line, for December 2022; the Dapitan-Lala 350-kV transmission line, Kauswagan-Lala 230-kV transmission line, and Kolambugan-Lala 20-kV transmission line, for August 2022; and the Dumanjug-Santander 350-kV transmission line, Magdugo-Dumanjug 230-kV transmission line, and Dumanjug-Alegria 20-kV transmission line for October 2022.

NGCP holds a 25-year concession and a 50-year franchise to expand and operate the country’s power transmission grid. It operates the country’s transmission network linking power generators and distribution utilities.

Publicly listed Synergy Grid & Development Phils., Inc. indirectly controls 60% of the outstanding capital stock of NGCP, its sole operating asset, with an effective equity interest of 40.2% consisting of common shares.

On Thursday, shares in Synergy Grid slipped by 0.33% or four centavos to close at P12.16 each. — Victor V. Saulon
