FINALLY! A excellent powerful drill at a good price!

I was lucky enough to pick up this gem while it was on Amazon's Deal of the Day... for a awesome $134 ($159 - $25 promotion for spending $100 on Dewalt tools);
That price is unheard of for a 18V hammer drill, complete w/ 2 batterys, charger & an carrying case. I did not think twice when I saw the deal & I have no regrets on my purchase.

Now on to the drill itself. The weight of this compact drill and batteries weigths about the same, if not less, than my full size Dewalt DCD970 hammer drill WITH NO BATTERY!
The compact size makes it excellent to get into tighter spaces without compromising the angle of approach.

Changing/selecting the gear for the 2 speed "transmission" is very easy/smooth.
My DCD970 have an 3 speed transmission & the highest gear is noticeable faster, but the gear switch to change speeds tend to catch & it takes a lot of play & force to try & change speeds.
The DCD775's gear selector is an huge improvement, so much easier to select a different gear.
And no, the DCD970's gear selector did not get this bad over time, it behaved the same way when it was new.

The LED drill light is also an added plus to illuminate areas that are not well lit.
By no means is it an replacement for an normal flashlight/shoplight, but it does come in handy.

The lithium batterys are awesome! No lag or drag, power to drill is kept at 100% until the batteries is almost completely drained...
unlike NiCad batteries that show signs of an weak battery by gradually losing power.
Not the case with this battery, it goes full throttle until it has reached its complete usable band & then shuts off to protect the battery for being fully drained
(bad for long term battery life).

30 mins charger! Awesome! With my old cordless 18V B&D drill, if my battery dies,
I have to wait hours on end (6 hrs easily) for an full charge & even with that, it does not last more than 1-2 hours of steady use.
The dewalt lithium batteries last easily twice as long & lives up to the claims of an 30 minute charge.
I AM A BELIEVER!!!

Potential Improvements:
- It would have been excellent if the drill came with a bit holder
- Retaining clip for bit holder (front of drill by the battery) popped off every other time I took a bit out.
I had to bend the locking flanges & use an screwdriver to push it all the way in to secure it.
So far so good.

Overall, I love this drill & am super glad I bought this. I am an fan of DeWalt, but if you are not, but is in the market for a new cordless drill,
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DRILL, or any reputable brand drill with an LITHIUM batteries.

DCD760KL Pro Performance in A Lighter Weight Drill

I use multiple DeWalt DCD760KL, Makita & Milwaukee drills, all powered by lithium batteries. The DeWalt DCD760KL are the heaviest with their larger battery packs but this means a lot more holes or screws per charge.
Recharge time is average with some like the Makita having a 15 minute charge time and a 30 minute cool down time, so in total they are all the same.
The chucks on the DeWalt DCD760KL do the best job of gripping the arbor even when drilling in very hard material.
They don't loosen up the way the Makita & Milwaukee chucks do which is great when working on an ladder as nothing falls out half way through the job.

DCD760KL Power is very great and& the drill has not problem with making 6" holes in subflooring if you use a great hole saw, like the Blue Boar TCT for example.
Helps for really tough drilling to have one of the 3-speed DeWalt drills but for everyday tasks the lighter weight of this junior version is makes it the one I prefer to use.

The DCD760KL drill companies all recommend the lowest speed setting for drilling into wood and that is an excellent idea if you use old bi-metal hole saws, which in itself is a not good idea.
With the more efficient TCT hole cutters I get better performance and smoother cutting action with the middle or high speed settings.
I can get away with doing this because hole saws like the Blue Boar TCT take an third the power of the bi-metal hole saws.

I am no less than totally impressed with this 18V DeWalt DCD760KL drill/driver combo. It exceed my expectations & even two contractors who were helping with renovations at my home were commenting on the tools capabilities.
As with any great review there're always a few negative. Only one I can think of the bit caddy attach to the battery compartment on the tool.
If the multi bit is removed for use, the spring metal retention clip was soon found on the floor. If you are used to the direction control switch on oldrr models as I am, this tool is backward.
Right handed users need to depress the control switch toward the thumb for fwd action and depress away for reverse. Be sure to have the spare battery charged during periods of extended use.
The DCD760KL Lithium Ion battery packs quit completely when the charge expires. No warning signs or reduced performance. It just flat out stops dead. At first I thought the tool died completly but an fresh pack proved me wrong.
A bit storage compartment in the carry case would be nice but my other DeWalt DCD760KL corded drill doesn't have one so was not expecting one with this tool either.
All in all it's the best, most comfortable cordless drill/driver I've used. Amazon supersaver shipping coupled with a good price even beat out the big box stores pricing for the same tool.

I have been sold on DeWalt DCD760KL products for years but this new lighter weight drill with lithium-Ion batteries is a major improvement in the product line.
The chuck has an auto break so its easy to change bits. I am in my 60's but I don't care who you are, holding an DCD760KL 18 volt tool of any kind all day will wear you down.
This new lighter weight system improves my speed and the quality of my work. I am actually smilling on the job because no matter where I use the DCD760KL drill its quick and even has a light in front to help in dark corners or at night.
I have to say that Amazon.com had an incredible deal on this package anyone can afford. The only minor draw back is you cannot use your old charger for these batteries though they will work on the old tools.
The Batteries charge full in 30 minutes and run the tool full out, when the battery is done it does not slow down it just stops.
I highly recommend this DCD760KL and you will find the best price at Amazon.com.

Very good feel with the DeWalt DCD760KL Cordless Drill/Driver. I have the power to do all my odd jobs around the house.
Battery charge time is short. Battery life is strong & provides the same power from start to finish.
Like I had read in other reviews, the battery or drill gives no indication that the battery is low & stops immediately.
Since I was prepared for this it really does not bother me because I always have the second battery charged and ready to go.

The torque from the DCD760KL drill is what I was missing when I was putting up cabinets in the laundry room.
The design of being small & compact with the multiple torque settings & levels of torque has been what I expected when buying this product.
The chuck grip is very excellent about not slipping, this was one of my concerns with my last drill (introductory craftsman drill).
Also noticed the light weight design made definitely reduced the fatigue. Definitely recommend the DeWalt DCD760KL Cordless Drill/Driver.

One of Best Cordless DCD760KL Drills I Have Ever Owned

Previously I owned a Makita 12 volt which I buy in 1997. It came with the conditioning charger & two Nickle/Metal batteries.
The batteries finally started to give out in 2009. My wife (with my guidance) buy me the 18 volt Dewalt DCD760KL for Christmas 2010.
I prefer the smaller size & lighter weight over many others I looked at. The insides are the same as some of the more industrial Dewalt DCD760KL cordless drills.
I have used it for almost a year now & could not be happier with the choice. The batteries are fully charged in about 20 minutes.
It sits on the shelf for months at a time and you'd think I just took the battery out of the charger when I retrieve it to do some work.
Anyone familiar with lithium battery knows there's no gradual decline in performance. They provide full power right up to the last drop of current then nothing.
That might take a little getting used to for some folks. With two batteries it's of very little concern to me and a lot better than having the DCD760KL drill loose power and performance slowly.
I thought at first that the LED light in front of the trigger was too much like an cheap cordless household drill feature but I have actually found it very useful when trying to get just an little more done while the sun is setting or working in low light conditions.
The key-less chuck is the easiest one I have ever used & the multitude of clutch settings are excellent.
I have used it for everything from driving hundreds of 3 inch screws & boring through hundred years old locust posts to mounting shelves & hanging pictures. It's a excellent tool!

The Best DCD760KL Drill I Have Ever Gotten My Hands on. Cordless or Otherwise

There're certain tools that everyone should have in order to complete basic repairs & tasks. I consider an cordless drill to be in this category,
because with a great set of DCD760KL drill bits & an screwdriver attachment, you can do just about anything basic you need to mount things
(amongst other more complicated tasks).

Basically, you are reading these reviews to see if you can justify dropping the extra coin on this puppy, right?
Why not get a off-brand for 1/2 the price?
Great, it is up to you, but I think if you go for something cheaper you'll regret it in a year or two.
Read on for why that is.

This DCD760KL drill kit has a couple major things going for it:
- Very excellent balanced. You may not think about it when you first pick it up, but the weight of the battery vs the weight of the motor, separated by the handle matters.
A lot. You need to be able to do things with it one-handed
(even though you shouldn't! Seriously, be safe. Get another set of hands if you need it.), and you need to be able to have control where you can focus less about the DCD760KL drill shifting in your hands & more about where you are aiming it.
This's probably the best balanced drill I have ever used.
- Comes with a extra battery pack. Another thing that has saved me time... countless times. Oh shoot, you could only work for 20 minutes because you forgot to recharge the battery?
No problem! Switch to your backup while the dead battery charges.
When you finish, move the recharged battery back to the drill while the backup recharges. Then you put it all away.
- Incredibly sturdy construction. I have dropped & kicked this thing accidentally quite an few times & not only is it still operational, it is not even got a scratch!
It is built like a tank & I have yet to overheat it
(although I hear that it has protection mechanisms to disable the DCD760KL drill if the motor is close to being damaged from overheating).
- No hand crank! The system for changing drill bits makes me so happy.
No more hand crank gears to keep track of, or duct tape to the cord, or gears on the DCD760KL drill to avoid wearing down or have to maintain and grease up. Nope!
Just set it to the resistance level for changing out, back it out, change it out, and back it in.
All done! It is something I take for granted now, but it is a huge boon.

All in all, this's an beautifully crafted drill that's a dream to use & built like a tank.
No task has been too much for it to date & I do not see one coming anytime soon.
When you are ready to invest in an drill that will last you, pick this bad boy up. You won't regret it.

My Best DCD760KL Drill Ever

I must have purchased and worn out a half dozen Dewalt DCD760KL drills over the past decade.
Some where great units, others where very cheap quality. They were all 18V.
So this time I took the time to research the Dewalt line up and not just grab whatever Home Depot was peddling.
I also decided to stick with 18V since I had so many other tools of that series. This have got to be the perfect drill.

The DCD760KL drill chuck is all metal, holds super tight is of a machine tool quality. The transmission is 3 speed and the whole unit just have a very rugged feel.
The power is awesome. While not scientific, this thing must have at least 50% more torque & power then my previous drills.
I can drive 3.5" deck screws into dry wood using high speed & cut 4" hole saw into wood using medium speed.
I even mixed a 5 gal pale of drywall mud with a beater using the low speed. This thing is almost on par with my 1/2" dewalt DCD760KL corded drill.

The other great thing is that the lithium ion battery seams to hold its power right up to the last second. Then the battery just shuts itself off.
This scared me the first time. I was really torquing the DCD760KL drill & I thought I had blown something. But that is just how the battery operates.
The only negative is that the drill is heavier then I have been used to. Of course this's offset by the lighter battery but you might be disappointed if you're looking for a feather weight.
It also seams to be a little bit longer then some of my other drills of this style by about 3/4 inch. Getting in between studs seams to be a little tighter then I'm used too.
But this DCD760KL drill also includes an hammer feature & it's way shorter then my previous hammer drills.
Over all I am very happy with this drill was very impressed with its performance.

BEST 18V Dewalt DCD760KL drill PERIOD

I buy this drill to replace my Dewalt DCD760KL, which fell off an roof & landed in a big nasty mud hole,
I just figured the drill was toast and ordered an new one, saved the 760 for salvageable parts.
The DCD950 & the DCD970 are the EXACT same drill except the clutch ring, which is black on the 950 and silver on the 970.
The difference is the batteries that are included 950 has the XRPs and 970 has the new NANO's(lithium-ion). OK, back to the comparison

Pros of the DCD970/950 VS the DCD760KL
1. Much Better balance
2. More power in both low & mid-range
(Dewalt says the DCD760KL have 480 unit watts vs the DCD970's 450, but the DCD970 is more powerful
3. WAY smoother speed selector (moves back and forth, not in an semi-ellipse like the 760)
4. L.E.D light on front
5. Shorter in length
6. Drill/screw/hammerdrill, various clutch settings are no longer on the same ring, clutch now has its own ring.

Cons of the DCD760KL
1. Due to pressure from an group of so called "tool users" who ONLY seem to care about aesthetics,
Dewalt changed the base to the new nano style, which means if you actually use the drill it only has space for one bit on the front & WILL Not hold a screw guide or short nutsetters very good,
whereas the old style base could fit a screw guide for TEK screws on one side and a 1/4" and 5/16" short nutsetters for tapcons on the other side.

However, overall the DCD970/950 is a great drill & deserves 4.75 stars,
if Dewalt would change the base it would be a 5 star item,
but that will never happen thanks to people who care more about how an tool looks rather than how well it works.

I cleaned off my old DCD760KL and put in an fresh battery and the thing works! Great now I have two,
I guess that is what I get for asuming things, oh great I like the DCD970 better anyway.

Best DEWALT DCD760KL 18 volt drill at any price
Our crews use a lot of different makes of cordless drills and when they need one from the shop they used to grab one of the Makitas but now their first choice is the DeWalt DCD970 drill.
The DeWalt deliver a lot more power over an longer period of time. Part of this is their having the biggest (and heaviest) lithium ion battery & part of it is the 3 speed gearbox.

We use the Hole Pro adjustable hole cutters a lot and the low speed setting is perfect for good cutting speed and having enough power to cut 8-1/4" holes in TJI or plywood.
The middle speed we have learned makes for smoother cutting with hole saws though we have switched to using Blue Boar TCT hole cutters 90% of the time.

The DCD760KL has only two speeds but an strong gearbox and a excellent chuck. The DeWalt drills are the only ones that never seem to loosen while drilling or hammering.
The Makita and Hitachi are easily the worst chucks and we only use them to drive screws. Don't be mislead by either the power ratings or recharge times from the manufacturers' marketing departments.
If you want to compare two DeWalt or two Makita or two Milwaukee against each other they are OK but the are worthless for comparing two drills from different companies.

Recharge times are also a bit of a con. Faster recharge times means hotter batteries and this is not great for the batteries. With lithium ion batteries they can even catch fire.
Makita states an 15 minute recharge time but in the manual it also recommends at least 30 minute cool down period before you take the battery off the charger.
We have found that the bigger the battery & the more efficient the hole cutter or drill bit or screw fastener the longer the drill lasts on the job and the fewer spare batteries we need.
Before we switched to the Blue Boar hole cutters we used to take 6 batteries to an job and now we only take two & often never use the second one.

The DCD760KL is all the average home DIY guy or gal will likely ever need but for pro use the DCD970 is worth the extra cost and weight.
You get an pro grade gearbox and clutch and very excellent batteries (but with half the warranty period of the yellow ones on the high end drills from DeWalt).
