Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling.

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

I just finished re-reading The Hobbit for the first time in a long time (probably a decade) and, of course, it was incredible again. I had forgotten just how different it is than the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in that it is much lighter reading (it has a much more conversational tone than LOTR) and has much less history. It’s still wonderful after so many years of reading – I mean, who wouldn’t like it? It has Hobbits and Dwarves and Elves and Goblins and Spiders and Dragons and barrel-riding. What more could you want out of a book?

Count me among those who think that abortion rights definitely suffered a major setback with the health care bill that was passed through the House on Saturday evening. Let me get this right - none of the plans in the "exchange" (I'm still trying to sort that out) can cover abortion. That means that nobody who buys insurance and receives a handout for that insurance can have an abortion covered. Who are these people receiving the handout? Any family of four that makes less than $88,000. So only the wealthy can have abortions covered by their insurance. I would think (and data backs me up) that these are the people least likely to need abortions.

Let's take the thought even further:

Rubiner believes that should this amendment pass [DFM: and it did], private insurance companies that would want to be part of the health care exchange would stop covering abortions to make their policies available to the greatest number of customers.

And there you go. Price of abortion goes up, less people can afford to have a safe procedure (particularly the poor), so people who can't afford it turn to less safe options.

And here I thought that it was Robert Bork's America where this sort of thing happened. Apparently, I was mistaken over who had what priorities...

Update: Are you kidding me? It's like Harry Reid simply wants to kill the health care bill.

Monstrosity - an excessively bad object of frightening size and complexity

I wish that I could write a paragraph that start "the problem with the health care bill is..." but there are so many problems with the health care bill that to single out just one is ridiculous. The bill is a monstrosity in the truest sense of the word - it is an excessively bad object of frightening size and complexity.

The size alone is enough to give pause. 1,990 pages of law that no representative (or representative's staff) will read or understand in its entirety before (or after) it is voted on. I'm not going to argue that every bill should be read by every legislator before it is voted on. That seems unrealistic. But I'd like to know that it can be done and that the provisions of the bill can be understood both separately and when placed in their context. I think that some lawmakers will attempt to read and understand the bill with their staff, but undoubtedly they will come up with completely contradictory ideas of what is actually meant by the bill. The actual debate will be rushed (as it has been all year long) and a vote far to premature for the subject matter will be held. The only question mark over it passing the House is just how many Blue Dogs will actually stick to their positions.

Note to Blue Dogs: If you are going to claim to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal, then at some point you have to actually vote in a fiscally conservative manner. We (those of us citizens who actually are fiscally conservative and socially liberal) are getting sick of the charade.

The bill doesn't (and can't possibly) accomplish so many of the goals that it supporters claim that it does. Key example: Many supporters of this form of health care reform claim that a lot of the waste in the system is because insurance companies spend a lot of money lobbying the government that could be spent on health care (or reducing cost or whatever). Do they really think that by making the profits of those insurance companies more tied to government decisions that there will be less lobbying? That seems ridiculous on its face. If I ran an insurance company, then the more that my profits depended on government decisions the more money and effort I am going to spend on lobbying to make sure that I get the right contract or that lawmakers/bureaucrats make the decision in my favor. This isn't that difficult of a concept: Big government leads to big lobbying. No matter what some people might argue big government doesn't fight against big business - big government begets big business. Just ask the financial industry.

Another thing that I worry is the tax implications. Whether you "pay" for this (I put it in quotes because we should all recognize that, like social security and welfare, debt is what will really "pay" for the bill) with taxes on good health insurance plans or taxes on income, you are having some pretty bad outcomes. Tax good health insurance plans and companies have a disincentive to offer them - not only will the company have to pay (part of) the cost of the good health insurance plan, but they will have to pay the employee more to cover the cost of the extra tax the employee will have to pay (or the employee just functionally makes less money). Set a maximum level of health insurance that won't get taxed and that is just where everyone is going to end up. There would be a disincentive to have better health care for everyone except for those at the very top who can afford it. And that won't be enough to cover the costs of everyone else. Or just raise taxes on the highest earners and we are moving farther down a path that has, to this point, led to 57% of Americans paying 100% of the taxes. Seriously. A little over 43% of Americans pay zero federal income tax. Now, I don't think that everyone should pay taxes. Some people can't afford it. Some are impoverished and should be helped. But it is not true that 43% of Americans cannot afford to pay in to the system. Of course, if you don't pay taxes, you don't worry when taxes get raised. Especially if the raising of the taxes give you something. I know that our Country was founded on No Taxation Without Representation, but how long can we ignore the counter of that statement - that with representation comes the responsibility to put in to the system?

Am I arguing that nothing needs to be done with our heath care system? No. There clearly are problems with it that need to be solved. The employer based system needs to be replaced. Not with a public system, but with an individual based system.

Is it frightening where this particular bill leads us? Yes. Very much so.

A couple of weeks ago, in a Science Magazine dominated by the news of Ardi (more on that in a bit), there was this article on the use of isotope and DNA testing to determine the "nationality" of asylum-seekers trying to enter the U.K, the "Human Provenance Pilot."

"My first reaction is this is wildly premature, even ignoring the moral and ethical aspects," says Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester, who pioneered human DNA fingerprinting.

The article then goes on to explain that it is premature because, basically, there is no accepted evidence that isotope signatures from birth or childhood are still present in adult tissues. Especially in tissues that constantly grow - like hair.(*)

According to the Border Agency, this method is used only on asylum-seekers who have already failed linguistic tests. Linguistic tests are also considered suspect in determining nationality. And besides, the Border Agency says, this is a "pilot program."

Even if the science was really good, I have some severe problems with using any method like this to determine the "nationality." The terrible name of the program is probably the least horrifying things about it. After an initial uproar, the Border Agency has now declared that the data will be collected but will not be used to determine the fate of individuals (yeah, right). The problem with any test of this sort is that it is humanly demeaning to do. Here are the world's tired, huddled masses seeking asylum (have in your mind the Lost Boys of Sudan) seeking help and "good" people of the world turn them away because of their genetics (or their isotopes)? Surely we should admit them based on their need and the society's availability alone. Surely we should, if we look hard and find no availability, do our best to find other accommodations. How else are we to claim to lift our lamp beside the golden door?

* - a really cool use of this technology is described as well - it was used to track a mutilated torso of a teenager that was found in the Thames river to a small Nigerian town in an area about 100 x 50 km. Read more about that here.

“After two and a half centuries of this fascinating debate, I have to say that my own sympathies lie with those who have found markets, on balance, to be on the side of the angels. But I should also add that I find the specific notion that markets corrupt our morals, and determine our ethical destiny, to be a vulgar quasi-Marxist notion about as convincing as that other vulgar notion that ownership of the means of production is critical to our economic destiny. The idea that working with and within markets fuels our pursuit of self-interest, greed, avarice, and self-love, in ascending orders of moral turpitude, is surely at variance with what we know about ourselves.”

- Feeble Critiques: Capitalism’s Petty Detractors

The World of the Absurd

“Absurd” in philosophy typically denotes meaninglessness. And Theater of the Absurd is used to denote dramas that emphasize this absurdity in human life (like Waiting for Godot) utilizing often odd means and ignoring usually important things like plot.

So, I think we should call what we are experiencing now the World of the Absurd. President Obama, after having accomplished ______ for the cause of world peace, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. I thought that maybe it was just my political leanings, but all of my friends on the other side of the aisle are just as confused and bewildered by this award. If you read the coverage of it, you get that same feeling like – The world is seems like one gigantic question mark this morning.

Lech Walesa – someone who actually deserved the Nobel Prize for his sacrifice in founding Solidarity and standing up to the tyrannous Soviet Union – sums it up:

“Who, Obama? So fast? Too fast - he hasn't had the time to do anything yet… For the time being Obama's just making proposals.”

Or, in the Wall Street Journal:

"It is unclear why. For making peace, of a kind, with Hillary Clinton? For giving up the missile shield and cheering up the Iranians? For preparing a surge of troops and weaponry in Afghanistan? Of course, traditionally it has been standard procedure that winners of the prize do their peacemaking first... But this innovation sweeps aside such old-fashioned notions of reward following effort."

We live in a world of the absurd.

Another suggestion are that is that this is an Alice in Wonderland Caucus-race moment. I think that’s along the same lines.

Yet another speech, with props appropriate for a fourth grade show and tell, to sell the rubes on something they seem unwilling to want to buy. And another appeal to oratory in place of substance. It’s been about a month since I walked down there even though it’s so close to me and three great new stores have been added, including Clay Wood and Cotton that sells great crafts and prints.

The Walkway over the Hudson opened up yesterday and the weather ended up being just wonderful for a sunset stroll over the river. The carnival atmosphere was great (they had circus performers and marching bands on the bridge) and the views from the bridge are spectacular whether looking North or South. The souvenirs were reasonably prices (I got a shirt for $15), which surprised me because often at these events they try to fleece you on those things (I’m looking your way Dogwood Festival).
So, all in all, a nice weekend here in the Hudson Valley.

The research value of data simulation

(this was also posted on my work blog)

I gave a talk the other day in which I referred to our experiment preparations and scooted over (in two slides) the fake data simulation that we had done in order to figure out how many data points we need and what sort of values we were expecting to get.* Basically, we simulated some fake data in Excel and went through our entire analysis procedure to make sure that we had enough data points and the right method to have good confidence that our values were good.** The other benefit of the fake data simulation is that you know the true answer (you’ve supplied it) and you can see if your method gives it out. You can also supply it with weird sampling schemes and data and try to break your method so you can see the constraints of your method (when it doesn’t work is usually as important as when it does work).

* If you are doing something simple, like taking measurements and averaging them, then you don’t need to simulate your data – this is a well solved problem. Given a precision or measurement and a desired confidence level, there are equations that spit out how many data points you need. That equation is N=(4*t^2*sigma^2)/L^2, where t is the critical value of Student’s t at the level of significance desired with degree of freedom equal to DF for the sigma estimation. I’ll explain that some other time.

** This is a little more complex than it seems. Basically, you have to simulate the experiment using fake data many times (I recommend at least 40 times) and then see the standard deviation of your values (or 2 sigma or 3 sigma – depends on how confident you want to be) and then you’ll be able to say “I have, with XX% confidence that my value is X plus or minus X.” Also, you have to make sure that you generate your fake data properly. So you have to know the precision of whatever tool the data is being generated from and then you have to generate a normalized set of random numbers with that standard deviation (if the error is normal you may need another set of random data if the error is otherwise). Depending on what final values you are looking at, you have to worry about the range of data (for example, if you are looking at the slope of a line, the range matters a lot to the confidence and number of data points you need) and all other factors that go in to your sampling plan. But sampling plan design is another subject entirely

I made the red pepper mayonnaise again and this time I used some more cayenne pepper (1 whole teaspoon instead of 1/4 teaspoon). It's good and definitely has an extra spiciness to it, which is good, but maybe I over did it just a little bit. Next time I'm going to drop it back down to about half a teaspoon. Plus, I used a larger clove of garlic this time and that really works well. In fact, this may have to be renamed red pepper garlic mayonnaise (RPG Mayo? Maybe that makes it seem a little too geeky).

I also tried it with chicken nuggets and it made a great dipping sauce for that so it isn't just for sandwiches.

Terrible

The report is that President Obama has decided to abandon missile defense shields in the Czech Republic and in Poland. This is, one supposes, in hopes of <strike>improving relations</strike> "hitting the reset button" with Russia (which had been upset that two states of its former empire would want to be defended against so that they could not be bullied in the same way that Georgia is).

Why we've this great desire to kowtow to the worst nations in the world is beyond me, but this is the latest in a pattern. Unlike Presidents Bush and Clinton, President Obama is refusing to meet with the Dalai Lama when he visits the U.S. in early October. This is because it would upset China. In either case it isn't clear that we have (or will) get anything in return. Does anyone really believe that Russia will stop bullying its neighbors because of this? Does anyone really believe that China will be more open to American proposals on climate change and human rights because of this? No? Then what are we gaining? Popularity?

Nick Gardiner puts it right in the Telegraph
What signal does this send to Ukraine, Georgia and a host of other former Soviet satellites who look to America and NATO for protection from their powerful neighbour? The impending cancellation of Third Site is a shameful abandonment of America's friends in eastern and central Europe, and a slap in the face for those who actually believed a key agreement with Washington was worth the paper it was written on.

What we are losing is pretty big when you look at it in the aggregate. I'm all for being liked - in fact, I'm pretty annoyed when people don't like me - but much more important is that I am taken seriously when I say things that are important to me. As a country out and about in the big bad world, we talk a lot about freedom, liberty, and responsibility. But if we don't defend the countries that are trying to care about these things, then what does all this talk mean? Nothing. It is just sound and fury. Our actions are what make these words signify something. Say what you will about President Bush's foreign policy - at least it stood for something. So far, it looks like President Obama's foreign policy stands for America being liked. So, instead of making the difficult choice and defending that which we think is right (like freedom of religion in the case of the Dalai Lama or freedom in general in the case of the Czech Republic and Poland), President Obama has tried to be popular so that we can go back to being the naive high school quarterback, liked by all but taken seriously by none.

P.S. Mitt Romney has a nice detailed piece on it.

Things I enjoy about science

Andrew Maynard at 2020 Science has an interesting post on what inspired him to become a scientist. It's a good exercise for anyone in any field to remind themselves from time to time why they are doing what they are doing, so I thought I'd try and come up with a few things that I enjoy about science and being a physicist.

Learning new things - I love learning new things about how the world works, how processes work, and how the universe works. To be fair, I learning about a lot of different fields, but the physical processes that are at the root of how nature works are so interesting, varied, and rich that they probably provide for an infinite amount of satisfaction in learning new things

Figuring things out - I'm sure that every job has a lot of "figuring out" involved with it. If you aren't solving problems of some sort (from figuring how best to educate a group to figuring out how best to provide service), then what, really, are you doing?. But being a scientist, it is my sole job to see a problem, come up with a methodological study, and solve it. And these solutions almost always lead to new questions and new problems. It's a fractal of fun!

Mathematics - Ever since I was very young, I've loved playing with numbers, groups, sets, and all the other things that order our thought. Mathematics is one of the richest toolkits that we have for figuring things out and, as a scientist, it is my number one go-to piece of equipment, whether or not I'm trying to define something statistically or I'm trying to game out a decision-making process.

New connections/new viewpoints - What really moves science along is when a new viewpoint is brought into it and changes the way that a problem is approached. It is great to try to explain biological processes using physics concepts or to try to solve materials science problems using game theory and biological concepts (seriously - you can set up an iterative game where carbon atoms minimize their energy and evolve out the buckeyball). If you are looking for it, new connections can pop up out of nowhere.

People think scientists are smart - I'll be honest, it helps the ego when you are watching Cash Cab and can answer all the science questions or when you are with a group of people and can explain how something works. People think that science is hard and, therefore, anyone who is a scientist must be absolutely brilliant. Of course, this is wrong - trained to think the right way, almost anybody could be a scientist. It also isn't true the other way. I know a lot of scientists that are no smarter than the average person - in fact, I suspect that intelligence level in the sciences probably tracks with intelligence level in the general population. But don't let everyone else know that. I need the ego boost every once in a while.

You need a larger sample size

One of my big pushes when talking to people about experiments they are doing is convincing them that they don’t have a large enough sample size. Everyone knows intellectually that you need a large sample size to be able to determine anything, but people tend to underestimate the amount of variability in small samples. This is especially important in industrial research where a pure experiment is difficult and a lot of time you are dealing with variable processes (with variable process ranges) and measurement errors that matter (instead of being glossed over as they typically are in academic research) and you are looking for a value that you have a specific confidence about (or, if you’re a Bayesian, credibility). That is, you want to be pretty certain that the value you get from your sample is a close match to what the actual value is of the entire population. And for this you need a large sample.

Well, here’s a quick, simplistic example that I think works to drive home the point.

We’ve all seen the commercials that tell us that 4 out of 5 dentists endorse a certain toothpaste. So, we know that 80% of dentists support this toothpaste. So, if we asked 5 dentists (randomly chosen), then obviously 4 of them would support the toothpaste, right? Wrong. This isn’t even a likely outcome. In fact, there’s only just over a 40% chance that this will occur (actually, 40.96%)! A similar occurrence happens if only 2 out of 5 dentists endorsed it – there’s only a 35% chance that your sample will reveal 2 out of 5.

But, let’s say we increase the sample size to 10. And, let’s also say that we allow for some wiggle room, that we’re willing to accept that if 7 (or 9) out of 10 endorse the toothpaste that that is close enough to our value. After all, with only 10 points we only have a resolution of 10% in our sample. We can do this now that we have some more data points. Well, then we get that about 30% of the time we get exactly 8 dentists, but about 76% of the time we get between 7-9 dentists. So that’s much better!

If we increase the sample size to 20 dentists and allow that any where between 14 and 18 dentists (70-90% as before) to count, then we get a representative sample about 84% of the time. And, if we want a tighter resolution (or interval that we find acceptable) and say that only between 15-17 (75-85%) is good, then we get this about 60% of the time.

So, what if we go up to 100 as a sample size? The table shows the odds for various acceptable ranges

Range (%)

% chance

70-90%

~99%

75-85%

~82%

78-82%

~45%

79-81%

~30%

So we have a much better chance of getting within 10%, a good chance at getting within 5%, and less than good at getting better than that.

What are the lessons that we can take home? Well, first is that small samples have a lot of variability in them. Larger sample sizes more accurately reflect the total population. The second lesson we can take home is that if we need better resolution (a smaller acceptable range), then we need to have a larger sample size.

I tried this out yesterday for the sauce on my panini (turkey and aged cheddar). So good!

1 garlic clove (mince it up, of course)
1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1/2 cup of roasted red peppers (from a jar)
1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice or to taste

Puree these ingredients well and then mix with about 1/2 cup of mayonnaise. Makes a great mayo that works wonderfully on a panini. I'm going to play around with some of the ingredients. It definitely has the right amount of garlic, but I might add some more peppers (or some tabasco sauce?).

As a result of this, we expect that our representatives in Washington, D.C., aren't available for us to talk to. I remember hearing of a young lady in the early 1960s who, upon graduation from college didn't know what to do with her life, went to her Senator for advice. She waited to see him and he did and talked with her. Can we imagine even getting past the Senator's gatekeepers with that today? Should it be difficult at all for constituents to get passed their Representative's gatekeepers? Should our Representatives have a "requirement to be here" for us?

Among other things that are going on with the recent town hall meetings, I think running under the radar is people growing sick of scripted, polished politicians that are constantly "handled" by their staff.

Oh sure, the people at these town halls are upset over the contents of what they see coming out of Congress. But they are also complaining about how members of Congress admittedly don't read the bills they vote for (or even have their staff read them)! And complaining about how the words that come out of their representatives mouth are talking points that we hear from the national leaders (usually with the local major employer having their name filled in to a blank). All this does is cede ever more power to "leaders." But the people of upstate NY (for example) didn't elect any of the party leaders to represent them. We elected our own Representatives, To read bills, To talk to us specifically with their own words, To listen to what we have to say and try to understand us - especially when we our upset over the direction of our country. We elected them so that we could require them to be here.

Who knows? Maybe these sort of protests are what we need to scare our representatives out of thinking that they represent a part of a national party (and, thus, fear being labeled a RINO or DINO) and scare them into thinking that they represent the diverse people of a specific geographical area (and, thus, fear that the people of that area will remove them from office). That seems like a good thing to me.

I thought this analysis of the numbers in the Iranian "election" was interesting so I wanted to do it on my own, except that I used the data from the county level instead of the province level (mainly because that was the first set of data I could find). With this set of data, you do not get the same oddities in the ones and tens digits that they got in the province level data. Plus, there are a lot more data points, so any systemic tampering should stand out even more. My graphs are below. You'll notice that each digit gets about 10% of the vote or what you would expect.

Update: Ah... they mention the difference between province and county analysis here.
