Raid of the Rainbow Lounge – Light at the End of the Tunnel

As you know, my partner, Robert L. Camina, has been working tirelessly for nearly two years on a documentary called Raid of the Rainbow Lounge, which chronicles the raid of a Fort Worth gay bar and the events that followed.

While there’s been a great deal of support within the community for this project, unfortunately, it has still been a struggle to raise production funds. Robert’s been successful making things happen with the money raised to date, but in order to complete the film he needs to raise more.

To this end he is making use of a “crowd funding” site called IndieGoGo. The current campaign aims to raise $5,500 and is scheduled to end in just over a month.

…to finalize and lock the picture, we need to raise at least $5,500 by April 4, 2011. Your donation will go towards crucial post production work including: audio mixing, the purchase of rights for newscast interviews that I was not able to secure myself (the man who suffered a brain injury and the officer accused of causing the injury) and graphic design for the opening title and closing credits.

“Out of the Ashes” Art Auction

For those very few of you that aren’t on Facebook, or may have missed the event invitation…

This coming Friday, October 15, we are holding an art auction called “Out of the Ashes,’ benefitting the “Raid of the Rainbow Lounge” documentary production fund. If you’re on Facebook, please check out the event invitation & RSVP!

The event will be held in a beautiful, 2000 square ft gallery in Deep Ellum located at 2814 Canton Street, Dallas, TX 75226 on Friday, October 15, 7pm-10pm.

You may know him from Talk Soup, or the American version of Queer as Folk – but either way let me tell you, he’s even cuter in person with his arm around than you might imagine! ;-)

Khaki thinks she’s fierce, but this squirrel disagrees. This clip is only a few seconds long, but he kept teasing her for several minutes – coming down within about 6 inches of her at one point!

House Update

Unfortunately there’s not much to update. I had a couple showings last week, two on Saturday, and another last night. Supposedly one from Saturday is interested but I haven’t heard anything more. I’m tired, sooooo tired. I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes it seems like these Realtors are conspiring against me, calling at the very last minute for a showing on Sunday night, or scheduling one from 5-7 when all I want to do is just go HOME, or leaving certain light switches off which turn off the garage door opener.

I know it’s the stress and lack of sleep. And living in these haunted walls – there’s not a room in this house where something doesn’t remind me of everything I’ve lost. I just need this place to sell. Somebody suggested hitting the gym the other day… I’d LOVE to, but I canceled my membership when I thought I had the place sold, and now I can’t justify paying for a new membership when every month I’m stealing from my savings just to pay the mortgage.

I guess one good bit of news is I’m putting out about 20 fliers in my tube each week. I just hope it’s not neighbor kids taking them. ;-)

Hello 2010

As some of you know, there have been a ton of changes in my life over the last few months. I won’t get into all of it here in a public forum, but suffice it to say it’s been a long time since I’ve known “normal” — and I’m working on redefining that for 2010.

One of the side effects of all this turmoil and change has been that my blog has been seriously neglected. I’ve thought about – and not completely ruled out – abandoning it… Since I first started at blogspot.com years ago (wow, first post in 2005!), Facebook has stepped up to fill much of this blog’s original purpose. For the time being, however, I’ve resolved to blog more than every few months… ;-)

I’ll end this post by once again plugging the fact that my house is still for sale. ;-) The sooner I can sell, the sooner I can find a better place emotionally and spiritually (not to mention financially).

No Better Time

I just wanted to point out to friends and family that Tressa, Keith’s youngest sister, is on her way to Rwanda as a member of the Peace Corps, and that she will be blogging about her experience at http://tressawessa.blogspot.com/ (“No Better Time” is the name of her blog).

I’m so excited for her – this is something she’s always wanted to do! Keep an eye on her blog – I’m expecting some pretty cool pictures and stories in the coming weeks and months.

P!nk

Last night, Keith and I were lucky enough to see P!nk in concert – the Funhouse Tour (Thanks Rachel for the free tix!!!). We saw her several years ago in a much smaller venue – but this time she performed at a packed American Airlines Center.

I’ve always adored P!nk, though my adoration has been overshadowed by Keith’s. The last time we saw her we were lucky enough to end up on the second row, and Keith actually got to kiss her hand at one point. I think he told that story last night as many times as he could. ;-)

Anyway, last night she told us (yeah I like to think of it as a P!nk -> Brian & Keith conversation) that she’d recently dislocated her shoulder, so she wouldn’t be able to perform all the acrobatics she normally does. I found out today at work that what she did at the VMA awards this year (which I completely missed) was one part of the concert. She still sang this song — in fact this one was right before she broke out Bohemian Rhapsody!

So being the geek I am :) I looked the video up. And let me just tell you – I LOVED this performance! I’ve watched this video at least 100 times today.

I love that she sings the whole way through, even while she’s flipping every which way up in the air! Britney doesn’t even compare.

I tried taking pictures and video at the concert, but we were so far away the pics didn’t turn out that well, and video sucked — even the audio was horrible with all the distortion. (it was LOUD!) But here are a couple halfway decent shots of the stage at least. ;-)

Dancing Flash Mobs

Have you heard about the whole “flash mob” craze? Apparently it’s been around for several years – but I just heard of it a month or two ago. Then yesterday a friend posted the Oprah video below on Facebook, which prompted an hour or so of flash mob video watching at home last night… So I decided to throw a few of the videos here on my blog.

What is it, you say? Wikipedia says, “a flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.” The term can apply to groups of people doing all sorts of strange things, but my favorite are the ones where they do choreographed dances (a Google video search shows not only the dance ones, but also people falling to the ground, or freezing in place, etc.)

So without further ado….

From change.org Gay Rights blog yesterday:

This may just be the best commercial out there on the subject of marriage equality. And it comes from Ireland, and the group “MarriagEquality“. Watching this ad, “Sinead’s Hand,” makes it crystal clear that putting the question of marriage on the ballot is not only ludicrous, but it’s offensive as hell. This Fall, the state of Maine will vote on whether gay and lesbian couples should have equal rights to marriage. It’s important to win that vote.

But the premise behind putting civil rights on statewide ballots smacks in the face of the types of protections and rights that governments – whether in the U.S. or in Ireland – should automatically provide for its citizens. Watch the commercial, and then ask yourself, “What if you had to ask four million people to marry someone?”
