I was driving through my neighbourhood one day and was excited to come across a new bakery, Cloud 9 that specializes in gluten free treats. Gluten free seems to be the newest thing in food these days, but for those of us that can’t tolerate it, it’s not just the latest fad, but the way we have to eat to stay healthy.

So why go gluten-free? Gluten-free diets aren’t just for celiacs or those with wheat allergies; eating wheat, even whole wheat, can actually do more harm than good. It is estimated that up to 50 percent of the population may be intolerant to the high-gluten content in wheat being produced today. The reason is that we don’t completely digest all of the wheat, leaving the undigested portions to ferment. Because wheat is found in so many foods, most people only discover their intolerance to gluten when they go gluten free and their overall health improves dramatically.

Ray Porcellato, founder of Cloud 9 Specialty Bakery, acquired his love for baking at a young age from his mother Pixie. When he saw the demand for gluten-free products going largely unfulfilled, Ray decided to continue that family tradition and launched a bakery that would create gluten-free baked goods that had the same taste and quality he grew up with. I’ve chatted with Pixie and she is adorable, it’s the the next best thing to going to visit grandma for homemade baking!

While the great thing about Cloud 9′s baking is definitely the taste, the next best just may be their amazing selection of treats! I am in love with the peanut butter cookies and brownies, the lemon tarts and cupcakes and their mini ‘foccaccio style’ picollo buns. They really taste as good as homemade and especially of their sweet treats, you would never know they were gluten free. They even pass muster with my picky 17 yr old that normally won’t touch GF foods! Swing by Cloud 9 Bakery next time you’re in New Westminster and are in the mood to treat yourself to something delicious!

So you know how to get away for the weekend with only a little luggage, but what about getting away for the week? How can one woman go away seven days and not be burdened with loads of luggage? Although it may seem impossible to lighten the load, a few tips and tricks courtesy of Diane Kennedy will have you packing your bag with room to spare for those personals you always dread leaving behind.

In “Your Travel Weekend Wardrobe” we told you about the necessity of choosing versatile, essential pieces that you can dress up or down, and transition from day to night. So how can you make even more room in that suitcase of yours? The secret is in the no stress, no mess, no press, organic bamboo jersey. Bamboo is incredibly soft, is silky and drapes beautifully, doesn’t stick to the skin in hot weather, and is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than cotton or hemp. No more stressing about placing your clothes just right to avoid the endless ironing of woven fabrics, with our organic bamboo jersey you can just roll your garments up and roll your suitcase out. Just remember that once you get where you need to be simply hang your garments to get out any creases that may have crept up on your travels; and be comforted by the convenience of Diane Kennedy’s getaway tips and tricks.

Had a visit to Southlands this past weekend, my most favourite nursery of all time. It’s surely the mecca for all plantophile, gardenaholics such as myself in the general vicinity of Vancouver. The owner, a charming gentleman by the name of Thomas Hobbs, never disappoints with his suberb assortment of seasonal plants, divine displays, drool worthy clay pots of all colours, and of course the latest, greatest and most stunningly unique plants. Everywhere you look there is some beautiful object, living or otherwise begging you to find it a place in your home or garden.

The moment I pulled into the parking lot, my eyes immediately went to a large cordoned off cart full of plants. From my car I could see it had treasures of my MOST favourite sort. A new shipment of hellebores! And they were choice… Doubles in every colour! Yellow Ones! Black ones and painted ones! Oh…just…OH!!! Turns out they were just in from a specialized Hellebore breeder out of Oregon. Special indeed!

Floral Arranging has long been considered an art, and a skill valued in many a well-bred young lady – just take a look at the curriculum of any English finishing school. While the traditional value of this skill may have been replaced by an emphasis on academics and technology in today’s society, flowers and floral arrangements are still considered essential to complete the look of any event, big or small.

If you want to get in on the latest in florals, GO GREEN! Recently, green flowers (not to be mistaken with “greenery”) have been cropping up in all kinds of floral arrangements. Green flowers you ask? But of course – green is the new neutral, and there are plenty of naturally green flowers to choose from! They’re used as everything from a filler to the star species, and are the easiest way to give any DIY arrangement a truly professional look. For example, the delicate Lady’s Mantle is the perfect (and much more modern) substitute for Baby’s Breath. It’s also incredibly easy to grow in your own garden! Green flowers enhance all the other flowers around them, but can easily stand alone as a alternative to traditional colours, or as a quirky accent to your beloved favorites.

From the thick and undulating Green Celosia to the fluffy, pom-pom like Green Trick Dianthus, we’ve identified some of our favorite green blooms above. Don’t they lend such a freshness to each of the arrangements? (Check out more Green Flowers on our Pinterest board, here!)

After a trip to the Vancouver Aquarium, we are completely inspired by the ever-changing shapes and vibrant colours of jellyfish. Invisibly carried by their own liquid momentum, jellyfish pulsate through the planktonic dark of our own Pacific Ocean. British Columbia is home to 75 different species of these brainless, heartless gelatinous beings. Aequorea Victoria, a species most common to BC, is best known for its ability to produce bioluminescence. The Aequorea is said to be the most important jellyfish in the world because of its ability to create and emit its own light. Jet-propelled with an unconscious ease, jellyfish remind us to keep calm and move with the tides (and times). Their tendrils trail in a neon glow, while their glossy water-flesh heads melt into their surroundings. It is truly amazing that we can find such electrifying colours—which are all too often associated with synthetic, man-made materials—in nature, let alone off the coast of our beautiful British Columbia.

The gardening year surely begins with these tiny white buds, bravely pushing through the ice and snow to greet us. My earliest memories of a garden were of snowdrops and crocus that bloomed in our yard when I was a child. My mother originally planted snowdrops almost 40 years ago and they still thrive there every year, multiplying generously, untroubled by any pests or diseases. I’ve had offspring of her original bulbs in every one of my subsequent gardens. They’re easily divided and replanted. Smaller daugther bulbs found along side the bigger ones will quickly grow to full size if you spread them apart in a new location. Don’t let the bulbs dry out and always move them “in the green”, meaning when the leaves are present.

We had a gorgeous weekend here in Vancouver several weeks ago. So I set off on my usual walk though the park, taking pictures of any other plants I could find in bloom. Only a few newly planted pansies and ornamental kale could be found as well as an attractive evergreen shrub called Viburnum tinus. I knew where to find another patch of snowdrops, a different variety than mine but so subtly different you have to practically be on your hands and knees to see it.

It’s best to plant snowdrops in a visible spot like near your front door, so as not to miss the bloom time. Every spring when I see these delicate teardrops, I get that itch to be outside, happily puttering in my garden…
