<itunes:summary>The Dice of Doom podcast is a lively discussion about role-playing games, focusing heavily on Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer along with many other gaming systems. We have been gaming for longer than we care to freely admit and we have a wide range of interests and experiences in gaming in general (everything from obscure games printed in the 1980's to the most recent tabletop wargames). We like to take a lighthearted approach to our discussions and mix them up with other nerdy news and content as well.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>DoD Podcast 046: DnD 5th Edition and The Temple of Elemental Evil</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>We present to you, most patient listener, a lost episode of the Dice of Doom Podcast recorded sometime last year. The bits and bytes of the recording languished in a forgotten folder on a computer where it matured and gained new and fragrant characteristics. Once it had reached the pinnacle of its potential, it was edited and cut down, spliced together then thrown to the public to listen to as they please. Topics covered are our impressions of D&D 5th edition and where D&D stands going into the future. We also have a heated discussion about the various editions and fail to agree on anything. To make matters worse, we then wrap up our experience with the original AD&D 1st Edition Temple of Elemental Evil campaign...</itunes:summary>

In particular we discuss how this is done in Rolemaster, Deadlands and Spirit of the Century.
For this episode we have only asked ourselves one question. And then we talk non-stop for around 45 minutes on it. No really. We just found it that interesting. The question you ask? If you were Professor of Roleplaying Games at some awesome university that had an RPG Dept, what would be the core reading texts? What would make up the Roleplaying Game Canon, so to speak. Continue reading →

We look at ways to reset a GM who thinks that you are always playing the same type of characters regardless of their stats or personality (thanks CrookRook!). We also do a mini-review of the D&D Boardgame Wrath of Ashardalon.</itunes:summary>

* We issue commands to Play a New RPG for the month of October
* We discuss using riddles and puzzles in your game and whether or not they are a useful tool in your GMing belt
* We debate another question from reader Disemvowel where he asks us what our perfect system would be in terms of individual mechanics from various systems
* We answer questions from Samaldanach about whether or not randomness is useful in a roleplaying game and a related question from Beefgriller about randomness and dice mechanics in roleplaying games

There are references to an article we wrote a while back on polarising roleplaying game between left and right style systems (much as we do political ideologies) which you may find useful to read before listening (if you haven't read it already).</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the podcast Dwayne regales us with stories of how a game he was running got off the rails (literally), and we talk about ways to get things back on track (bear with us, the intro takes a little while on this one...). We also answer a question posed to us by reader Disemvowel. He asks us "Could a GM control the HPs of the players in a game to promote better roleplaying." We also summarise our thoughts on the recent, and very controversial, guest posts on the role of the GM (at least until we get distracted by something else that is...).</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we conduct our first Q & A, taking four questions from listeners and readers. The questions we discuss are:

Question 1: If a player cheats on a dice roll should a big deal be made of it, or should it ignored - asked by Symatt

Question 2: What can you do to deal with difficult players who have bottomless pockets and backpacks and who refuse to fail any dice check - asked by Andy Horton

Question 3: Do you restrict a player's ability to purchase certain items based on their level, or if they have the money, do you just let them buy it - asked by IvPalmer (note, the discussion on this topic inspired the Monty Haul post)

Question 4: How can a GM encourage players to be more descriptive in their play? - asked by Symatt</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the podcast we review the venerable and iconic game GURPS (Generic Universal Roleplaying System).
We also answer a listener question from the guys at Roving Band of Misfits. They ask, "Can you discuss the idea of having two different RPG groups playing the same adventure with opposing goals."

Just a note about the roundtable conversation: Due to the nature of how it was recorded, this portion of the podcast does not have the same level of production values that we usually keep to in our podcast. We felt some people would find it interesting, so we have included it as it offers the opinions of our entire gaming group, rather than just those of the podcasters.</itunes:summary>
If we look at the majority of fantasy fiction (up until recent times) the main protagonist in the story tends to be a loner, and if there is any one else in the story, they tend to be sidekicks. We discuss how to run sidekicks in a game, how to balance story share and ways to make the sidekick role fun for the players. We also discuss the possibilities created by taking a 'cast of characters' approach to running a game - giving players the ability to take on multiple roles and characters throughout the campaign.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>DoD Podcast 024: Games Workshop Switch to Resin Models & Do Rules Really Matter, Duncan's Right of Reply</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In this fun filled episode of the podcast we discuss the TV show that nearly was Korgoth of Barbaria, the switch by Games Workshop to move to Finecast resin for their models and we give Duncan a chance to discuss his views on whether rules matter or not.

In a revisit to a topic that we discussed on what we consider to be one of our best episodes ever, we give Duncan the opportunity to debate his side of the 'Do Rules Really Matter' issue. We look at whether or not the character needs stats to be roleplayed well, when it's OK to ignore dice rolls and an optional rules for strip-roleplaying (it's a pants-lite system).

We also look at the recent move by Games Workshop to change their model production from metal to a new type of resin called Finecast. This has generated quite a bit of debate as to the merits of the new material, so we sent Duncan out to have a look at them and report back. We also discuss the pricing issues relating to Games Workshop miniatures.</itunes:summary>

This week we discuss our first impressions of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition and sources of inspiration for Games Masters for their roleplaying games.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is very dear to Paul and I. It was our first fully fledged roleplaying game experience back in the 80's and we have loved playing it on and off over the last 3 decades. So it was with some mixed feelings that we decided to try out 3rd edition for our gaming experiment. Continue reading →

<itunes:summary>In this episode we review Vampire: The Masquerade which we have just finished playing as part of our Grand Gaming Experiment and we look at running investigative style roleplaying games.

After the completion of our Vampire: The Masquerade game we started discussing how often we had run games where the PC's were put in positions of having to investigate mysteries, crimes, conspiracies and the like. An investigative game suits any setting you may be playing from high fantasy through to a gritty Call of Cthulhu game. If you have ever thought that you might like to cast your players in the roles of detectives, sleuths, or hapless bystanders who get caught up in a conspiracy, we have a look at how to run these games along with tips to giving hints to your players to avoid the awful "I don't know what to do next..." problem that often plagues games of this sort.</itunes:summary>

We talk about the pits and hurdles that newbie GM's often experience and some ways to overcome them. We also have a chat with special guest Mardo about the writings of HP Lovecraft and where to start with his voluminous writings. If you are interested in learning more about the Cthulhu Mythos, then this topic should have you covered.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this episode of the podcast we give our initial impressions of Vampire: The Masquerade (2nd Edition) and discuss how to make the most of a character death or end of a campaign.

Many times, when a character dies, it is the result of a bad die roll, an encounter gone wrong, or a failed skill check. We have started allowing players to narrate the end of the character's existence, giving the player a way of making the most of the character's end. This has made for some very memorable character deaths. As part of this discussion, we also look at bringing campaigns to an elegant end, and the importance of having a final point so that they don't just 'fizzle out'.</itunes:summary>
During our All Flesh Must Be Eaten campaign, Paul (who was the Zombie Master) decided to try and add social themes to the game. The idea was to highlight the importance of personal relationship networks and how they collapse of these can add to the horrific nature of a catastrophe. This is not a new concept, Vampire: The Masquerade recommends attempting the same thing, but it was not something we had consciously done a lot of previously. We discuss whether or not it worked, how it could be improved upon and did it actually contribute to the game.</itunes:summary>
Gamma World was a game that we were a bit hesitant to try as it is based on the D&D4e ruleset, and our Grand Gaming Experiment is about trying out new games. It wasn't until Paul quite rightly pointed out that the other part of the experiment was to try settings that were completely new to us as well. With point clearly made, Gamma World was added to our roster. Listen to the podcast to find out what we thought of it.</itunes:summary>

Play a New RPG is an idea that has been kicking around in our head for a while now is to start a campaign to get as many gaming groups as possible to try a new rpg for a month, to break the mould and experience something new. We've been doing the extreme version of this for the last 4 months and we have found it to be extremely rewarding. For this reason we have started Play a New RPG Month to be held in October. You can visit the website at playanewrpg.com for suggestions of what games to try, tips on running the month and to let us know what your group is trying out.</itunes:summary>
One of the key components to a lot of Roleplaying Games is the inclusion of a mechanic to balance encounters, or in other words, make sure that the players will always have a chance of winning a combat. This leads to a situation where players may feel that they are always in a position to win a combat and will likely behave as such. It also does not reflect the real world (well, in-as-much as a Fantasy RPG could be considered 'real'). We discuss the relative merits of each methodology and look at examples of games that handle it differently.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This episode of the podcast we discuss our experiences with playing Rolemaster Roleplaying (MERP) by Iron Crown Enterprises. We recently finished our Rolemaster campaign as part of our Grand Gaming Experiment. It's one of those classics that has been around since 1980 in one form or another, and while many gamers have heard of it, few, it seems, have tried playing it. Rolemaster has formed the basis for other systems - most notably Middle Earth Roleplaying Game amongst others. It is famously complicated and descriptive using multiple books of tables to resolve combat and develop characters and intricate methods of creating characters.

We have been making fun of Rolemaster for its complexity as a gaming group for years, and we figured it was time to put our money where our mouth is and give it a run through.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This week we discuss the move of D&D Insider's Character Generator to the web which allows Mac users and Linux users to access this excellent tool. We also discuss our experiences playing Dragon Age and our thoughts on the system. For our main discussion we look at dealing with absent players. Frequently groups will experience missing players from the gaming table. How the party deals with this can have a significant impact on the campaign, the game and the players involved. We look at ways to handle this often common situation.</itunes:summary>
