Dean G. Blevins, Editor
Web version ISSN: 15360156

By way of introduction, Didache: Faithful Teaching, is an interdisciplinary academic journal offered on-line that explores the intersections of Christian conviction, culture and education for the Church of the Nazarene and other international Wesleyan communities in higher education. The journal is sponsored by the International Board of Education (IBOE) of the Church of the Nazarene, in cooperation with Nazarene Theological Seminary. The publication serves to foster a conversation among our diverse international communities of higher learning, each seeking to educate in various academic disciplines but all guided by Christian conviction shaped through a Wesleyan heritage. With this international context in mind our editorial focus includes articles and resources that explore intersections between:

an emphasis on Christian faith and practice,

an awareness of cultural influences, and

the exploration of educational practice and administration.

Intentionally our hope remains to resource smaller communities around the globe who have little access to scholarly sources and who may find this journal helpful in shaping their education endeavors. We also include research from quality scholars and educators from around the world, some who have little opportunity to publish in other settings. The journal includes research articles, insights from the practice of teaching and learning, as well as book & resource reviews.

Editor's Introduction (Summer 2011)

Welcome to Didache: Faithful Teaching Volume 11: 1. We are a bit late this summer with this edition (originally scheduled for June). The delay revolved around some serious server issues that actually interfered with Volume 10:2 so we postponed release of Volume 11:1 to honor the hard work of those who contributed to the last volume. The delay also helped to secure a new “home” for the journal (actually a return to our original home) as well as created a new “editorial team” to guide the global efforts of the journal in the future; more on that move and the team towards the end of the introduction.
The journal opens with a specific theme: a Philosophy of Education for the Church of the Nazarene. Historically most of the philosophical and theological groundwork in evangelical Christian higher education surfaced from largely Reformed educational institutions. While other works have been available outside the evangelical tradition, many in conservative Wesleyan centers of education have (reluctantly at times) relied on their Reformed evangelical cousins for resources. Some examples include Wheaton College professor Arthur F. Holmes’ 1975, well-known, monograph The Idea of the Christian College; as well as more recent work like Baptist scholars David Dockery and David Gushee’s text The Future of Christian Higher Education. In addition, the Coalition for Christian College and Universities’ series “Through the Eyes of Faith,” tend also to draw on Reformed writers like Ronald Wells (1989), professor of history at Calvin College. For the Coalition for Christian College and Universities’ series, Click here.

Editor's Introduction (Feb 2011)

Welcome to Didache: Faithful Teaching volume 10:2 (February 2011). This edition includes an interesting array of essays, research articles and student submissions. The first half of this edition addresses a key theme that has shaped a number of recent conflicts, primarily in the United States, yet contains the potential of guiding our responses to a number of controversies in the future. While the controversies have continued for some time now, it seemed appropriate to offer this series of resources, particularly for those in academic settings that still face these confrontations on a regular basis.

I want to begin with a brief review of the second half of the edition, the section that reflects the particular research strengths of this journal alongside a desire to nurture young, emerging, scholars. We are privileged to have research submissions from the faculty and students of Africa Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Editor's Introduction (Jun 2010)

Greetings and welcome to Volume 10:1 (June 2010) of Didache: Faithful Teaching. Regular participants will note that our website has gone through a renovation. The new design comes courtesy our creative web designer Shawn Stevenson, the artistic eye of Tammy Condon, and the steady leadership of Commissioner E. LeBron Fairbanks. Hopefully the new design will also make the journal more user friendly in the future, assisting readers as they explore the large array of writings from regional theology conferences around the globe.

Speaking of conferences and global settings, this edition serves as a vehicle to announce a new global theology conference within the Church of the Nazarene in 2012. A recent press release includes the following:

The International Board of Education and the eight regional education coordinators for the Church of the Nazarene globally serve as planning committee members for the two conferences. Dr. Ron Benefiel, Nazarene Theological Seminary president, serves as chair for the Global Theology Conference Planning Committee, and Dr. Loren Gresham, Southern Nazarene University president, leads the Global Faith, Learning and Living Conference.
