In our new lesson series you can follow Nathan as he takes you through 11 beatboxing lessons as well as 3 creative rhythm timing lessons and 2 breathing exercises.

Nathan has been performing and teaching workshops for a number of years and like Sanshi, has the uncanny ability to break down something complex like beatboxing into simple to follow steps.

Adding a simple percussion instrument to your didgeridoo playing will add a whole new dimension to your sound. In this lesson, Sanshi shows you the first steps in playing with an egg shaker

Lesson goals

• Get comfortable with shaking the egg shaker to keep an even rhythm
• Be able to accent the main beat in the egg shaker sound
• Play the didgeridoo rhythm “dida (B) dida (B)” while keeping the rhythm on your shaker

Training tips

• This is a new co-ordination so it’s ok if it feels very difficult to begin with
• Be sure to practice just with the shaker to get comfortable before adding your didgeridoo playing
• Keep your arm really relaxed to make shaking easier and feel more comfortable
• Experiment with the speed of the playing & shaking to find what speed feels to easiest to practice
• Try and lock into the accented beat. Focus matching up your didgeridoo timing with the main beats

Ever heard a didge player pump out rapid vocal calls and thought… where are they breathing?! This technique allows you to do a punchy vocal pop and take a breath at the same time. Sweet!

It’s all about the timing. In this lesson we fine-tune the timing of your breaths and cheek spits. This is the final step to get right before we pickup the didgeridoo. Make sure you can do this step easily before proceeding to the next.

Lesson goals

• You have a controlled cheek spit sound that lasts 2 – 3 seconds
• You can take a short sniff during the first part of your cheek spit
• Your sniff is finished before your cheek spit finishes
• Be able to repeat this technique over and over without having to concentrate too much

Training tips

• You don’t have to rush. This technique is best done slowly and controlled
• If you are having trouble, go back to the last lesson to get comfortable, then repeat this lesson
• Forget about how this technique relates to the didgeridoo, this is a breathing exercise
• Try to resist going to the next step until you find this step easy
• The fastest way get the circular breathing technique is to practice each step until it’s so easy that it’s boring! Only then go onto the next step
• You may have to practice 10 times, 100 times or 1000 times. It doesn’t matter how many it takes, it can happen much sooner that you think
• If you try to learn the circular breathing on the didgeridoo, all your focus goes to making it sound good and you can forget about the technique. This is the long and painful way to learn. Put the didgeridoo down, practice our way and you will be circular breathing very soon

In this lesson we introduce you to the “cheek spit”. It will sound terrible, but the good news is… it’s meant too. Being able to do what we show you in this lesson is a huge step forward in the circular breathing process. Make sure you can do this step easily before proceeding to the next.

Lesson goals

• Be able to squeeze out a mouthful of air with your cheeks to make a spitting sound
• Make a spitting sound with your cheeks that lasts around 2 – 3 seconds
• Be able to do the “cheek spit” at the same time as taking a breath in through your nose
• Be able to repeat this technique over and over without having to concentrate too much

Training tips

• When doing the cheek spit, make sure you are not “blowing” the air from your lungs. You are just wanting to spit the air out that is stored in your mouth
• You don’t have to rush. This technique is best done slowly and controlled
• Doing the cheek spit on the 3^rd breath in, teaches you to store the air in your mouth first and only use this air to squeeze out
• Forget about how this technique relates to the didgeridoo, this is a breathing exercise
• Try to resist going to the next step until you find this step easy
• The fastest way get the circular breathing technique is to practice each step until it’s so easy that it’s boring! Only then go onto the next step
• You may have to practice 10 times, 100 times or 1000 times. It doesn’t matter how many it takes, it can happen much sooner that you think
• If you try to learn the circular breathing on the didgeridoo, all your focus goes to making it sound good and you can forget about the technique. This is the long and painful way to learn. Put the didgeridoo down, practice our way and you will be circular breathing very soon

In this lesson, we show you the very first step to circular breathing. It may feel a little weird and you may question what this has to do with circular breathing. Just trust us and keep practicing, it’s essential. Make sure you can do this step easily before proceeding to the next.

• Be able to hold your mouth full of air (cheeks puffed out), while breathing in and out of your nose
• While having a full mouthful of air, be able to open your lips slightly to let the air fall out of your mouth
• Be able to breathe in and let the air fall out of your mouth at the same time

Training tips

• Forget about how this technique relates to the didgeridoo, this is a breathing exercise
• Get this technique and you are over 50% of the way there
• Try to resist going to the next step until you find this step easy
• The fastest way get the circular breathing technique is to practice each step until it’s so easy that it’s boring! Only then go onto the next step
• You may have to practice 10 times, 100 times or 1000 times. It doesn’t matter how many it takes, it can happen much sooner that you think
• If you try to learn the circular breathing on the didgeridoo, all your focus goes to making it sound good and you can forget about the technique. This is the long and painful way to learn. Put the didgeridoo down, practice our way and you will be circular breathing very soon
