It also boasts 16-megapixels of resolution from an APS-C sized CMOS image sensor, burst shooting at up to 6fps, a broad ISO range up to ISO 51,200, a high quality pentaprism OVF with 100% frame coverage, a Prime M image processor, fast and accurate SAFOX Ixi + AF system, built-in Shake Reduction (SR) stabilization system, and much more. However, it sports a more affordable price tag, a "wide selection of simple user-modes and creative tools", and it runs off of four AA batteries (versus a Li-ion pack like the K50). Like the K50, this little gem offers up to 120 different color combinations, allowing users to match the Q7 to their own unique style. While wild color combinations are cool, what about its core features?

Well, the Q7 can deliver there as well. Pentax's Q-mount cameras are known for their petite size, however one draw back is that previous models (like the Q10) used small image sensors, which hold back image quality capabilities. The Q7 has been upgraded with a large 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS image sensor, which should give it a nice boost in the image quality department. This sensor offers the same resolution as the Q10, 12.4-megapixels, however with increased surface area thanks to the large sensor design.

At a scant 7 ounces, the Q7 will surely be easy to keep with you at all times. Thanks to the versatility of the Q-mount lens system, you can pick from 19 diffident lens options, so the Q7 won't only match your own personal style, but your shooting style as well.

The Q7 will sell for $500 USD with the include 02 zoom lens (3x). More details can be found in our Q7 Preview.

PENTAX RICOH IMAGING Expands Commitment to Q-mount Camera System

Available in 120 color combinations, the Q7 ensures there is a camera for every taste and style along with features and settings to match

Denver, CO (June 12, 2013) --PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION today announced the fun and highly capable Q7 compact system camera. With an expertly architected supply chain management system designed around Color To Order, consumers are empowered to integrate individual style, personality and taste into their camera sparking the creative process even as their order is placed. Joining the already successful Q10, the Q7 features an upgraded 1/1.7 inch, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, high sensitivity shooting up to ISO 12800 and enhanced Q ENGINE with faster response time during start-up and shooting time, the creativity continues as beautiful, sharp images are captured.

"Don't be fooled by the Q7's small size and 120 color combinations," said Jim Malcolm, executive vice president, PENTAX RICOH IMAGING. "As the smallest and lightest compact system camera in the world, this tiny gem is packed with serious specs and capabilities including a number of digital filters and smart effects."

Weighing in a just 7 ounces, the Q7's compact body enables easily poket-able portability while the fun filters and assorted lens variety inspire the casual photographer to elevate their creativity. With 19 smart effects and filters and seven lenses, a retro look and feel can easily be applied in-camera with the ability to layer different effects for greater expression and better image quality than cell phones ever dreamt of. Additionally, with the Q7's enhanced Eye Fi SD card compatibility and built-in menus, users can now edit, re-size and share photos instantly.

Also introduced today is the 07 Mount Shield lens. Featuring a focusing range of approximately 0.7-2m, still life shots and macro photography are given a beautiful dream-like look and feel. In a joint press release, Fujifilm and
Panasonic announced that they've developed a new imaging sensor
technology using an organic photoelectric conversion layer that
offers the industry's highest dynamic range.

Instead of a traditional silicon based
layer that may be 3 microns thick, a very thin (approximately 0.5
microns thick) organic film layer has been developed to convert
light, allowing a huge increase in saturation levels and dynamic
range (up to 4 times what would be expected from traditional sensor
technology), while decreasing noise levels at the same time.

Because the new sensor design offers a
much higher incidence angle, this sensor design may lead to better
lenses that take up less space in newer compact camera designs, too.

We're excited by the continuing progress
of sensor technology, and look forward to testing new cameras using
it. See the press release and overview of this exiting evolution in
sensor technology below.

Fujifilm and
Panasonic jointly develop an organic CMOS image sensor technology
using organic photoelectric conversion layer

Offers Industry's highest* dynamic range and sensitivity for vivid
and texture-rich images

June 11, 2013

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) and Panasonic
Corporation (President: Kazuhiro Tsuga) have developed organic CMOS
image sensor technology that uses an organic photoelectric conversion
layer with a photoelectric conversion property at the light receiving
section of an image sensor to achieve performance beyond that of
conventional image sensors**. Applying this technology to the image
sensors of digital cameras and other imaging devices expands its
dynamic range*** and enhances sensitivity*4 further to prevent
highlight clipping in bright scenes and capture a dark subject with
vivid colors and rich textures.

The industry has put into continuous efforts to explore image
sensor technologies for increasing their number of pixels. This has
dramatically improved sensor resolutions, but, in order to further
boost image quality, it is necessary to expand the dynamic range,
enhance sensitivity and prevent cross-talk or color mixing between
pixels. Panasonic took advantage of its semiconductor device
technology to boost image quality for its high-performance image
sensors. Fujifilm, on the other hand, has developed highly-reliable
organic photoelectric conversion layer with high absorption
coefficient to be used on a sensor's light receiving section instead
of silicon photodiode*5 in its effort to build a new image sensor
technology.

In the latest collaboration, Fujifilm and Panasonic have
combined Fujifilm's organic photoelectric conversion layer technology
with Panasonic's semiconductor device technology to jointly develop
an organic CMOS image sensor that outperforms conventional image
sensors. The new organic CMOS image sensor offers the industry's
highest dynamic range of 88dB, advanced sensitivity 1.2 times more
sensitive than conventional sensors** and broader range of incident
angle*6 to enable the production of more sensitive and compact
cameras with better image quality.

The two companies will promote the application of this organic
CMOS image sensor technology to a wide range of products including
security cameras, in-vehicle cameras, mobile device and digital
cameras.

Fujifilm and Panasonic will present the research results at the
2013 Symposium on VLSI Technology (VLSI2013) to be held in Kyoto on
June 11, and the 2013 International Image Sensor Workshop to be held
in Utah, U.S.A. on June 15.

Overview of the newly-developed organic CMOS
image sensor technology

A conventional image sensor consists of a silicon photodiode for
capturing light, metal interconnect, color filter and on-chip
micro-lens. The newly-developed organic CMOS image sensor technology
uses organic photoelectric conversion layer with high absorption
coefficient instead of the silicon photodiode, reducing the thickness
of the light receiving section down to 0.5 microns, i.e. one
severalth of the thickness of a silicon photodiode. This structure
provides the following benefits:

(1)Industry's highest dynamic range of 88dB to prevent
highlight clipping and produce a vivid and texture-rich image even in
low light

Panasonic's semiconductor device technology has improved the
signal saturation value*7 by four folds compared to that of
conventional image sensors. Coupled with the newly-developed
noise-cancelling circuit, the sensor technology provides the
industry's highest dynamic range of 88dB, preventing highlight
clipping in bright scenes and capturing a vivid and texture-rich
	image in low light.

*7 The maximum amount of electric signals that can be handled.
Receiving a signal greater than this value leads to highlight
	clipping.

2)1.2 times higher sensitivity than conventional sensors to
capture clear images even in low light

The transistors and metal
interconnects in each pixel, fabricated using Panasonic's
semiconductor device technology, are coated with photoelectric
conversion layer, developed using Fujifilm's organic material
technology. The area of the light receiving section becomes limited
in conventional image sensors because of the existence of metal
interconnects and the need to form light shield film to prevent
light incidence into areas other than the photodiode in each pixel.
However, the organic CMOS image sensor technology coats the sensor
with organic film, which can harvest all the light received on the
sensor. This boosts sensor sensitivity by 1.2 times compared to
conventional sensors to deliver clear images even in low light.

(3)Range of incident angle expanded to 60 degrees for faithful
color reproduction (See the image sensor illustrations above)

The thickness of the organic film
with high absorption coefficient, developed by Fujifilm, has been
reduced to just 0.5 microns, or one severalth of the thickness of
silicon photodiode in the light receiving section. Since the
conventional silicon photodiode measures at least 3 microns in
depth, the range of incident angles was limited to around 30 - 40
degrees. The thin film, achieved with the organic CMOS image sensor
technology, has enabled the expansion of this range to 60 degrees,
efficiently utilizing light entering at an angle for faithful color
reproduction with no color mixing. It also gives greater flexibility
in lens designs, facilitating the reduction of overall camera size.

(4)Offering high reliability for broader applications

Fujifilm has developed a process
technology to produce inorganic films for protecting the organic
film. It prevents the entry of moisture and oxygen into the organic
film to safeguard it against performance degradation. The sensor
technology has cleared reliability tests involving the application
of stress such as temperature, humidity, electrical voltage and
light, paving the way for the use of the organic CMOS image sensor
in a wide range of applications.

providing camera models that cause users of other brands to be
jealous of the very high quality that Leica products are known for.

The new Leica X Vario may stir the same
feelings, as it's designed to be a Premium Product offering a very
high quality design. For example, Leica used a body made from
magnesium alloy and aluminum with soft leather trim to insure the
camera is both solid and comfortable.

Leica states the new Leica X Vario will excel in lowlight
conditions due to its larger 16.2-Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor,
allowing ISO speeds up to ISO 12,500. Leica equipped this camera
with a premium quality Leica Vario Elmar 18-46 mm f/3.5-6.4 autofocus
zoom lens that provides coverage equivalent to 28-70mm on a 35mm
camera.

When it comes to handling, the Leica X Vario follows the lead of
the Leica M and offers a persuasively simple handling concept that is
reduced to the bare essentials in all respects. All functions and
controls are clearly laid out, and settings can be changed in an
instant to meet the needs of any photographic situation. At the same
time, the commendably, user-friendly menu interface displayed on the
high-resolution 3" monitor provides a clear overview of all
settings at a glance.

This new camera also has the ability to switch between automatic
and manual control in a split second, thanks to precise click-detent
dials on the top plate that allow manual pre-selection of the required
shutter speed and aperture values. In addition, the required focusing
distance and focal length can be set via the focusing ring on the
lens.

Leica also included the ability to capture full HD video at 1920x1080 pixels and 30 frames per second. The full HD videos can
also be saved in Internet friendly MP4 format and uploaded directly
to social media or mobile devices without any need for conversion,
allowing inspiring moments to be shared with friends not only in high-quality photographs, but clear HD video as well. An
integrated wind-cut filter ensures super audio clarity.

An extensive range of accessories is also available to adapt the
Leica X Vario to a photographers' particular needs. For example, the
Leica EVF 2 Viso-Flex electronic accessory viewfinder with 1.4-megapixels and a 90° swivel function is extremely helpful when
shooting from unusual angles. An accessory handgrip makes it easier
to shoot one-handed and provides a better grip. As with the Leica M
(Typ 240), finger loops in three different sizes (S, M and L) can be
attached to the handgrip, helping further ensure safe and steady
handling of the camera. An optional lens hood ensures the minimization of reflections and the Leica SF 24 D flash unit offers
greater freedom for subject lighting.

Leica will also include Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Apple Mac®
OS X and Microsoft Windows®, in the Leica X Vario package. This
digital image processing software offers a wide range of functions
for the management, processing and presentation of digital images.
The software is available to X Vario customers as an online download
after product registration.

ultra-wide EF-M 11-22mm f/4.5.6 IS STM Lens for their EOS M system
cameras.

This lens includes Optical
Stabilization that reduces blur from camera movement, allowing
shutter speeds up to 3 stops slower than would normally be possible
without a tripod. Also, Canon used a Dynamic Access IS design to
help get better HD movies without camera shake induced blur.

This lens can provide focus distances
as close as 0.15 Meters (approximately 5.9 inches) and offers a very
wide angle view for capturing scenes like landscapes. Canon states
this lens was manufactured to Professional standards and uses their
Super Spectra Coatings designed to minimize flare and ghosting.

Another interesting feature is that
this is a retractable lens design to minimize the size of the lens
until being used, with a switch to lock the lens in a retracted
position, Canon used a STM focus system to give rapid and near
silent focusing. Yet, this new lens also includes a manual focus
ring for those photographers wanting complete control of focus.

June 2013 - Canon today expands its range of EF-M lenses with the
introduction of the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Designed for
Canon's Compact System Camera, the EOS M, this is Canon's first
ultra wide-angle EF lens to feature an Optical Image Stabilizer.
Offering a versatile wide-angle zoom range, first-class optical
performance, and a new retractable design, the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6
IS STM is the perfect addition for EOS M users who wish to capture
their passion for landscapes and architecture.

range which provides an incredibly wide field of view. This allows
users to capture the environment around them whilst remaining close
to the subject - ideal for adding drama and atmosphere to each
shot.

Class-leading optics deliver
incredible results
Engineered using the latest optical
technologies, the
EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM enables users to
capture images with incredible levels of detail and quality.
Manufactured using Canon's professional quality standards, the lens
uses Super Spectra Coatings designed to minimise ghosting and flare,
providing beautiful results with every shot. Images are crisp and
clear thanks to Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer, which works to
keep image blur to a minimum by correcting camera shake. A 3-stop
shutter speed advantage ensures high quality stills, even when light
levels start to fade.

Shooting smooth Full HD movies is
easy using the advanced Dynamic IS mode which combats more
exaggerated forms of camera shake that occur when shooting video on
the move. Canon's near-silent STM technology also ensures focus
noise is supressed during movie capture, so the audience can enjoy
crystal clear sound to match the visual quality of the footage
captured.

style
Incredibly compact and lightweight, the EF-M
11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM has been designed to fit easily into the
smallest of spaces so it can be carried everywhere. A new retractable
lens design - a first for the EF lens range - locked in place by
a switch, allows users to retract the lens back into the barrel when
not in use. This keeps the body slim and compact, reducing the lens
length by 13mm. An integrated full time manual focus ring also
provides the freedom to make precise adjustments to focus as needed.

The reasoning for the cuts is likely due to smart phones taking over as a user's means to capture simple snapshots, but according to Fuji's Optical Device and Electronic Imaging Products Division general manager, Hiroshi Tanaka, it's due to low profit margins on these models.

During an interview with Nikkei last week, Hiroshi Tanaka also noted that Fuji is planning to combine its digital camera operations and optical devices business, which they claim will help decrease 'procurement costs' by as much as 10%. AP reports that Fuji already has a plant producing optical parts in the Philippines, and that, 'assembling digital cameras there would help boost efficiency.'

The good news from all of this is that Fuji is going to focus more on their popular high-end models, like those in their X-series. Yesterday, Adrian Clarke (VP for FujiFilm Europe) told AP, 'We are overwhelmed by the positive reaction from photographers to the introduction of models like the X-E1, X100s, X20 and the lens line-up. Although we enjoy the compact market, it's fantastic for Fuji to get back to "real" photography.'

While it's uncertain whether Fuji will choose to produce their remaining low-end models in the Philippines, AP notes that they understand that Fuji's prosumer, X-series models will continue to be produced in Japan.

(Source - Amateur Photographer)

Related articles:

Steve's FujiFilm X20 Review

Steve's FujiFilm X-E1 Review

Steve's FujiFilm XF1 Review

Steve's FujiFilm X-S1 Review

Starting
immediately, the first two members of the new ZEISS lens family Touit
are available with dealers. With the extreme wide angle lens Touit
2.8/12 and the robust standard lens Touit 1.8/32, both for Fujifilm X
and Sony NEX cameras, ZEISS is entering the new market for compact
system cameras (CSC) with autofocus, interchangeable lenses. The new
lens series is characterized by a powerful optical and mechanical
design, which fully exploits the potential of the cameras thanks to
the low distortion and stray-light absorption. Noteworthy is also the
professional product design of the new lens family, which has already
won several design prizes.

"With
Touit photographers can use ZEISS lenses on two leading mirrorless
system cameras," says Michael Schiehlen, Director of Sales at ZEISS
Camera Lenses. "We are addressing this market because it offers
interesting application possibilities for sophisticated photographers
and because the segment promises very interesting growth."

By
supporting Fujifilm X and Sony NEX, ZEISS has decided on cameras with
an APS-C sensor in order to guarantee maximum image quality. The
APS-C sensor is the largest possible sensor currently available on
the market for this segment. The Touit lenses are characterized by
their high production quality, guaranteeing longtime usage. Like all
ZEISS lenses they also offer outstanding imaging performance. Typical
for the new family is above all the combination of compactness, light
weight and precise, durable mechanics. "High imaging quality and
light weight are the most important advantages of Touit and are
especially interesting for ambitious users of compact system
cameras," says Schiehlen. "The angular view is identical to DSLR
lenses for APS-C cameras, but the lens is significantly smaller and
lighter." The metal body underscores the lenses' robustness and
durability. Those parts that are not relevant to key functions
were designed in high-quality plastic in order to reduce weight.
Compatibility with all Sony NEX and Fujifilm X camera functions, a
clearly accentuated 1/3-step aperture ring on the version for
Fujifilm X, nine aperture blades for an almost circular bokeh, as
well as excellent stray-light absorption through the ZEISS T* coating
are the hallmarks of the design of this new lens family.

explains Dr. Michael Pollmann, who is responsible for the development
of the Touit lenses at ZEISS. The lens has eleven lens elements
arranged in eight groups and was designed according to the Distagon
optical concept. In addition, the lens has floating elements, two
aspheric lenses and three lens elements made of high quality glass

Touit 1.8/32 offers the user an angular field that resembles
natural eyesight. The goal during the development stage was to create
an easy-to-use standard lens that the photographer can leave on the

everyday situations. Touit 1.8/32 was developed according to a
modernized Planar design approach that was adapted to today's
requirements: instead of six lens elements, which is common for the
Planar, the Touit 1.8/32 is equipped with eight lens elements and
therefore offers an even higher imaging performance when used with
digital sensors. The Touit 1.8/32 can be used in many types of

This enthusiast camera is packed with appealing specs, including a larger 1/1.7" CMOS image sensor, 12-megapixels of resolution, a fast f/1.8 zoom lens, 5x magnification, built-in image stabilization, a high-res (921K dot) 3.0-inch LCD screen, Full 1080p HD video, 10fps Burst shooting, RAW image capture, and much more. While aimed at photo-enthusiasts with its PASM exposure mode options, the P330 still offers plenty for those who are less versed in photography with options like Smart Auto, 20 different scene modes, Panorama assist, and various Special effects and creative filters.
