This photograph was captured Thursday 7th October 2010. The day is very bright and clear, with the odd cloud in the sky and a reasonable sea running. The tide was very low today, which allowed for this image to be taken.

I was interested in something a little different, compared to most photographs of beaches in Cornwall. I was after impact and a minimal approach to the scene. This photograph works for exactly what I had in my minds eye. Interesting textures and patterns in the fore ground, leading the eye to the rocks, with a feint line of the ocean swells giving the image a narrative.

This photograph would pop in a nice dark mount, pushing the gentle and subtle subject out.

Portreath Sunset

This sunset photograph of Portreath was captured recently on a tour of the North Cornish coast. There was little time between heavy rain showers and the setting sun to compose and take this photograph. Fortunately everything came together, allowing me to get this photograph. I really love the foreground reflections and the strong, bright colours cast by the setting sun.

This young man’s Mum wanted a few Photos to capture the youth of this little one and to share amongst her friends and close family. She wanted just him in the frame, no covers or other props.

I had to work quick to capture the images I was after. The Baby was great, so interested in the camera…. He would just watch it wherever I went. I needed a little extra light as the natural light on this day was very flat, so I rigged an off camera flash to one side of baby and began shooting.

He is a perfect model and we managed about 15 mins of shooting before he became hungry and wanted Mum.

The final chosen image was printed on 12 inch square paper and mounted and backed. It has made a real centre piece for any home!!

Having a quick look around the web for something interesting in the world of Photography news, I came across this concept device which might shed some light onto the future of the photographic world.

From: Engadget

Portraying the digital still camera as an endangered species has been a popular pastime for years in the cellphone industry, and with the high-resolution stills and high-definition video capabilities of the latest round of smartphones, the argument is more convincing than ever when applied to the casual snapshot. But this week at the World Expo in Shanghai, Canon — a name synonymous with high-quality photography — offered a vision of a device that not only supersedes the digital still camera, but will likely eliminate photography as we know it.

The future will hold some really interesting devices to capture the world around us, 3D telly’s are coming out, we have 3d sound, where will it all end???

Photos of Bangers in Cornwall

This was a great day for some photography in Cornwall. The rain was spread out with sunshine in between, the cars were revved and ready to race. The Cornwall Championship was to be decided.

I wanted a few images to add to my sales area – Stock photographs for sale. This seemed a great chance to kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, a great day out with the family and secondly a chance to capture some different aspects of life in Cornwall.

I wanted to let my camera absorb the feeling of movement on this day, so I went into shutter priority, dialled down to about 1/80 th of a second and started shooting. Part of the knack is to pan the camera while taking the exposure. This should keep part of the image in focus and blur free, however, the rest you want to turn into a streak of colour and action!

Gibbon in Black and White

As photographers we use light to paint the final image, yet sometimes we have too much light to capture the photograph we intend to present. Not often for my Cornwall Photography sessions, but still an issue.

I guess we get into a position where as a photographer you want the sharpest image, yet sometime you have to much light entering the lens. This happens when either:

You want to use a small f number to throw out focus, or

You want to slow time down to capture movement.

The latter was the issue here. Slowing time creates an important dimension in this photograph. It gives the image a sense of purpose with the movement captured by the hand of the Gibbon, showing the animal in some context, despite the scene being almost devoid of reference points.

The solutions are simple. One requires you to have a filter to hand reducing the amount of light being shown to the sensor, the other means using the cameras technology to reduce the effect of light on the picture, using ISO.

Filters effect the light seen by the camera. Some improve colour in differing areas of the spectrum, others prevent light in differing quantities entering the lens, allowing slower shutter speeds to be effective in bright light conditions.

Once you start tweaking ISO away from the basic setting of 200 – 800 you start to really trade off quality. You have to balance this trade with your abilities to enhance and tweak images in software, with your creative requirements. The beauty with ISO is you have it wherever your camera goes…. If you forget your filters!!

Black and White Big Cat Photo

I have been lucky enough to take some time out from my usual photography in Cornwall with a visit to the Royan area of France for a few weeks.

This was a fantastic family holiday, which has left me with over 300 keepers (the best of the best photographs) to edit and present to my family. Oh I wish I did not have a camera at times!!! Only joking there, It was great and to be able to record the holiday through the lens with some fantastic shots is worth while.

This big cat was merrily sleeping while I took this photo. The photograph is almost as shot. I converted it in camera to black and white, then a little careful dodging and burning to increase the feeling of depth in the image, a crop to A4 format and a little sharpening. That is all the editing I have done!

The good news is since I have been back I have book a few more portrait shoots and have been working hard at marketing my work in the local area. I have also updated the way I sell images from this site. I now use Photobox to print images and send them directly to you. Have a look here for more information about my photographs for sale.

Flora Day Photos

This post has been a little while coming, due to work commitments. Anyway, here is a photograph from Helston’s Flora Day. This dance is the Childrens dance, one of five dances from the day.

Porthleven Harbour

This photo of Porthleven harbour is my latest addition to my Cornwall photography collection.

The photograph is taken from inside the harbour at Porthleven on a low tide, looking out to sea, with the clock tower in the distance.

I reckon I will start a collection of interesting perspective photos of Cornish Harbours. I already have a very traditional photo of St Ives Harbour, a very popular photograph of Porthleven harbour at at Storm time and Porthleven looking towards Breage Side. There is plenty more to capture.

Anyway back to this photograph – I used a number of different exposures to capture the high dynamic range of the image, then blended them by hand in Photoshop, I converted to black and white and dodged and burned the image to increase the feeling of depth. What do you think??

Child portrait photography.

A quick post to show you another photograph from a recent location portrait shoot. Another image from this shoot can be found here – Child location portrait shoot. Located here in digital-scene Cornwall photography blog.

This photograph was taken balancing the natural rim light (the sun) with an off camera strobe. The lens is a nifty fifty set at f 1.7, matrix metering with the camera picture control set to landscape (that set the colours and sharpening in camera.) all saved as a Nikon Neff file. The quick edit was done in Nikon Capture, with the black and white conversion and a quick levels tweak.

Working in this environment I set the camera to do the work, P or A modes, as light levels are changing quickly and you do not want to miss the pose. However, the flip side to this is a lot more time post processing the photographs.

There is always a pay off in photography and I guess part of the skill is learning which pay off to use, in what situation.
