Access MySQL Database using VB.Net

Here is a sample program that will teach you how to access MySQL database using a simple library named DatabaseUtility.dll which I created.

The program was developed using Visual Studio 2013 running in Windows 7 64bit. The sample program can be downloaded here.

Getting Started

Assuming you already downloaded and installed the required tools mentioned above, the first thing you should do is run XAMPP and create your database schema.


Click the Start button for MySQL. If running successfully, it will be highlighted in green.

In this example I used HeidiSQL to connect to MySQL. To explore, use the following values from the screenshot below and click Open button.

Heidi SQL is a good tool if you want to create a schema using its ui. Create a new database named testdb and a table named personinfo.

However, you can run the sql statement below in HeidiSQL to create the same personinfo table.

The coding part

Once you downloaded the sample program, extract it to your local drive and open the solution using Visual Studio. Once loaded, right-click the project name from solution explorer panel and click properties from the popup menu.

Select Reference and click Add->Reference button.

Once the Reference Manager window is shown, click Framework under Assemblies and type the word mysql in the text box. You will see MySql.Data from the list, check it and click OK button.

Note : MySql.Data will be available if you installed MySQL Connector for .Net.

Perform the same Add Reference step from above but this time click Browse from the left panel and click the browse button.

Look for the location where you placed the DatabaseUtility.dll you downloaded and click Add button.

You will see that DatabaseUtility.dll has been added to the list. Check it and click OK button.

DatabaseUtility and MySQL.Data should be added to your References list. Ctrl+S to save you project.

Basic DatabaseUtility API

To connect to MySQL database, use DatabaseManager.establishDatabaseConnection command and supply the correct connection string. Use this code when the form loads.

To fetch records, use MySqlDataAccessService().executeQuery command and supply with your sql variable that contains SQL SELECT statement. The command returns a DataTable which you can directly assign to DataGridView's Datasource property.

For SQL statements like INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE, use MySqlDataAccessService().executeNonQuery and supply with your sql non query statements. The command returns an integer value representing the number of records added, updated, or deleted.

As you can see, using the DatabaseUtility.dll can save a lot of codes and can make you source codes shorter and easy to maintain. :)

Web Based Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop Connection is a program that can be found on Windows XP Professional that gives a client user the power to access another computer remotely. Just imagine you can access your computer at the office while you're at home. Cool isn't it?

Basically, the Remote Desktop Connection can be found at the Start Menu under All Programs->Accessories. But what some other people don't know is that you can also perform a Remote Desktop Connection using the Internet Browser.

How to Install Remote Desktop Web Connection?

By default, this feature is not installed in Windows XP, so we need to install it ourselves to utilize. But before we proceed with our installation, we must first consider the following:

IIS is properly installed and running.
Windows XP Installation CD.

Below are the steps to install Remote Desktop Web Connection:

Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components to display the list of components.
Select Internet Information Services (IIS) and click Details button.

Select World Wide Web Service and click Details button.

Select Remote Desktop Web Connection and click OK button. (This will require you to insert Installation CD)

Running Remote Desktop on Internet Browser

After a successful installation, you can now connect to other Windows XP Professional Workstations using Remote Desktop Web Connection by typing http://machinename/tsweb on your Internet Browser's address bar.

Restore missing cd-rom drive icon in My Computer (Windows XP)

Lenovo G450: Fn+Esc hotkey not working

The driver installation failed and an error message "USB video device not found". I pressed Fn+esc to activate the built-in webcam but there were no response.

In case you encountered such problem, here is a tip on how I fixed it:

1. On your desktop right-click on My Computer and select Properties from the popup menu.

2. On the System Properties window, select Hardware tab and click Device Manager button.

3. On the hardware treeview, expand Imaging Devices and check for USB Video Device.

4. Right-click on USB Video Device and select Uninstall from popup menu.

5. Right-click on Imaging Devices and select Scan for Hardware Changes and the system will reinstall the USB Video Device automatically.

After performing the above mentioned steps, try to press Fn+Esc hotkey and the USB Video Device should appear in My Computer.

I am using this service for more than a year and it really helps me a lot specially when the hard copy of my bills are missing.

Applying for this service is easy but first, you have to consider bringing a hard copy of your Meralco Bill to register.

Step 1: Go to this link to bring you to customer service page and click New User link to register.

Step 2: In the Enrollment Page, fill up the Service ID, Bill Date, Amount fields and click Enroll button to enrol your account.

In case you don't know where to find the values to put into Enrollment Page, use the image below as your reference.

Step 3: Supply the fields in User Information page using the info provided in your Meralco Bill. Supply your derised Username and Password and click Enroll button.(You can assign a different birthdate if you desire.)

Step 4: After a successful registration, go back to Step 1 to login using your username and password to bring you to the welcome page. Click the Service Identification Number (SID) to goto the Account Page.

Step 5: The Account Page contains the information about the owner of the meter. To inquire about the previous and latest electric bills, click the Billing History link in the upper part of the page.

This page contains the previous and latest electric bills sorted starting from the present. In case you still havent paid your latest bill, the Bill Status will be Unpaid.
