slowed in Western markets and their headline-grabbing potential has subsided, manufacturers and Intel are still taking netbook product ranges forward.

The arrival of Intel Atom Cedar Trail processors and falling SSD prices should allow upcoming netbooks to run silently—or at least very quietly. These new-generation CPUs give off very little heat—so little, in fact, that devices loaded with them won't need a fan, the noisiest component in any computer. Plus, using a 32 GB or 64 GB SSD instead of a standard HDD will cut noise output even further. However, storage capacity will be reduced in turn, as most current netbooks ship with 320 GB of hard drive space.

But while the netbook market is considerably calmer in Europe these days, there's growing demand for this kind of device in emerging markets. Although netbooks are somewhat restricted by their less-powerful components, these mini-laptops still some of the most financially accessible computers around.

> Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

Sat Nav Review: Garmin nüvi 2595LMT with Lifetime Map Updates

Garmin nüvi 2595LMT We're kicking off our reviews of Garmin's 2012 sat navs with the nüvi 2595LMT, the firm's fanciest mid-range model. The 15" model is only slightly heavier, at 1.59 kg and 14.9 mm thick; this one claims a 10-hour battery life and features a matte screen with 1600 x 900 resolution.

The price, like the release date, is still unknown although chances are we'll find out more at MEDPI 2012.

> Reviews: Laptops & Netbooks

Smartphone Review: Huawei Honor, Good Value For Money?

Huawei Honor In the run-up to the launch of its famous high-end smartphone, the Ascend D, Huawei is releasing a mid-range Android phone (running Gingerbread, not Ice Cream Sandwich)...<img width='1' height='1' src='http://digitalversus.feedsportal.com/c/34406/f/626146/s/1fa7d9d0/mf.gif' border='0'/><div class='mf-viral'><table border='0'><tr><td valign='middle'><a href="http://share.feedsportal.com/viral/sendEmail.cfm?lang=en&title=Smartphone+Review%3A+Huawei+Honor%2C+Good+Value+For+Money%3F&link=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digitalversus.com%2Fmobile-phone%2Fhuawei-honor-p13352%2Fsmartphone-review-huawei-honor-good-value-money-n24410.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://res3.feedsportal.com/images/emailthis2.gif" border="0" /></a></td><td valign='middle'><a href="http://res.feedsportal.com/viral/bookmark.cfm?title=Smartphone+Review%3A+Huawei+Honor%2C+Good+Value+For+Money%3F&link=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digitalversus.com%2Fmobile-phone%2Fhuawei-honor-p13352%2Fsmartphone-review-huawei-honor-good-value-money-n24410.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://res3.feedsportal.com/images/bookmark.gif" border="0" /></a></td></tr></table></div><br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/134204865904/u/49/f/626146/c/34406/s/1fa7d9d0/kg/327/a2.htm"><img src="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/134204865904/u/49/f/626146/c/34406/s/1fa7d9d0/kg/327/a2.img" border="0"/></a><img width="1" height="1" src="http://pi.feedsportal.com/r/134204865904/u/49/f/626146/c/34406/s/1fa7d9d0/kg/327/a2t.img" border="0"/>

Huawei Honor

<esi:include src="/price/product/13352/small"/>

In the run-up to the launch of its famous high-end smartphone, the Ascend D, Huawei is releasing a mid-range Android phone (running Gingerbread, not Ice Cream Sandwich) at an entry-level price: the Honor—dubbed Mercury in the US—will go for around £250.

Naturally, it isn't as powerful as the frontrunners on the mobile market, but with a 4" screen (480 x 854p) it ain't too shabby, either. Now a new, modified version of the controller has been spotted on Twitter.

With wider dimensions than the version unveiled last year, this supposedly more recent version of the touch tablet controller has new locations for certain buttons and two new, square-shaped controls have been added.

Here's the official version that Nintendo presented last year:

The overall handling doesn't seem to have changed, but there is a new set of analogue sticks similar to those found on the Wii Nunchuk. The first version of the Wii U had sticks akin to those on the Nintendo 3DS (the "Circle Pad"). The new analogue sticks are closer to the edges of the controller and should be more comfortable for a living room console controller.

At least that's what Randy Pitchford, the president of Gearbox Software, thinks. Not one to mince words, he takes it a step further in an interview with our colleagues at GameSpot. In Pitchford's words the Wii U is simply "the best controller I've ever had from Nintendo for a hardcore first person shooter".

He also stated that Gearbox's next game Aliens: Colonial Marines will benefit from the functionality of the Wii U, which has "the added advantage of this new controller, which has a touchscreen built into it. And that gives us some interface options that just don't exist, that just aren't possible on the other platforms. The most obvious one of course is a motion tracker [the one with the creepy beeps in the Alien movies]. So I'm playing the game and maybe I'm going through one of those suspenseful sections and all of a sudden [beeping noise] and I realise the sound is actually coming from the controller. And I look down and it's a motion tracker in my hand, an actual motion tracker in the controller. And it's motion sensitive too, so I can scan the room by moving the controller. It's pretty cool, and that's just one of many uses of this device".

We have a feeling that the Wii U and its touch tablet controller have the potential to surprise us. We'll find out more about it on 5 June at Nintendo's E3 2012 conference. Today, however, that changed, from the moment we started testing a certain TV equipped with a Sharp UV²A panel.

After selecting the mode most suitable for watching films, we got to work testing this TV in our labs. The results are impressive, to say the least, with contrast over 5000:1, accurate colours (average Delta E = 3.1), a balanced, stable gamma (average = 2.2), and a colour temperature at 6500 Kelvins. Nvidia, however, has come up with a system that takes care of graphics processing remotely, so users can effectively ditch their home computer or console.

Remote Graphics Processing
The Californian tech firm's GRID system isn't entirely new, as it basically involves using remote servers to take care of graphics processing before sending the images to end users via the Internet.

What is new, however, is the fact that GRID can handle very graphically complex games like Bulletstorm or Need for Speed, to quote just two of the examples used in the Nvidia demo.

This in turn means gamers won't need an expensive computer or a latest-generation console to enjoy power-packed graphics. In fact, it effectively means that you could play ultra-realistic games on a basic home TV.

Some TV makers have apparently already decided to integrate apps compatible
with the Nvidia system, as seen in the LG TV above.

To achieve this, Nvidia has created a kind of graphics card called the GeForce GRID. Each card contains two Kepler GPUs with spec similar to the GeForce GTX 680. Two cards can be loaded onto each server, and a rack—a kind of tower for housing servers—can be loaded with up to 21 servers. It's therefore possible to use 84 GPUs per rack. Servers set up in this way could then be used by third-party companies to deliver network gaming for just a few quid.

Latency: The Ultimate Issue for Cloud-Based Gaming
While the Nvidia servers would be powerful enough to process games and graphics, latency must also be kept in check. In other words, the GRID system needs to be responsive—pressing a controller button must instantly translate into an onscreen action.

Nvidia claims to have worked long and hard to overcome latency issues, promising a system that's just as responsive as a standard games console (approx. 150 ms according to Nvidia). In fact, the GRID GPUs capture and compress data, send it to the user and then take care of decoding it on end devices.

The figures quoted by Nvidia still look quite optimistic (see above). When testing TVs for our reviews, we usually find a response time of between 15 and 100 ms. Plus, the response time for a broadband Internet connection can be 30 ms, but it can also be over 50 ms in certain circumstances.

Nvidia is clearly launching an ambitious project and we can't wait to test it in a real-life set-up. What's more, several major video games studios (Epic Games, THQ) are apparently already interested in getting involved.

Although it remains to be seen whether the GRID will really take off on a commercial level, it's probably only a matter of time before we'll be able to play any game with the same level of graphics detail on any kind of display device, from a Smart TV to a computer monitor to a tablet or even a smartphone.

> Graphics Card Reviews

Printer Review: HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color MFP M475dn

The LaserJet Pro MFP M475dn is an all-in-one multifunction laser printer designed for small- to medium-sized businesses that print 1,000 to 2,500 pages per month. Now Microsoft is breaking new ground with So.cl. Announced as a revolution in online document searching, the network democratises the concept of curation: users make searches in So.cl (actually, it's a Bing search), find content, share it and leave comments. There's also a more classic function for simultaneous streaming that allows users to watch videos that have been synced to play at the same time on each computer and, of course, comment if they wish.

Users have to sign in via either their Facebook account or their Windows Live account. A California judge ordered the heads of the two companies to meet yesterday in an attempt to reach an out-of-court settlement.

Samsung and Apple have been waging a merciless patent war, resulting in the one's smartphone being banned on this market, the other's tablet being banned on that market... This seemingly unending conflict may come to an end in the next couple days, as Apple's Tim Cook and Samsung's Choi Gee Sung were recently instructed by a San Francisco district court to try and hack out a truce over a two-day session of talks that began yesterday.

There's no use speculating on what might come of the talks until they're over, but for now both parties are exhibiting nothing but good will. In April, Mr. Cook expressed his desire to see an end to the battle, if possible with an out-of-court settlement before a legal onslaught can begin. Of course, Apple does have one condition: that it receive damages to compensate for what has transpired. This is likely to complicate the process.

As for Samsung, the company seems equally as determined to reach an agreement. The K-30 is basically like a scaled-down K-5, with the same general specs but a more basic design and fewer physical controls.

Pentax K-30

<esi:include src="/price/product/13371/small"/>

Compared with the K20D, the K-7 was a huge step forwards in design and handling with improved build quality, a lighter body, a 100% viewfinder, etc. But, in the meantime, the K200D was replaced with a pared-down K-m, ditching the weatherproof finish and the second screen.

This created a pretty big gap in the range—a gap transposed into the 2011 Pentax SLR series with a jump directly from the quite basic K-r—which holds its own against competitor models (see K-r vs D3100 vs EOS 1100D)—and the K-5, a robust experts' SLR. There was therefore plenty of room to slide in an intermediate model to rival bestsellers like the Nikon D5100, Canon EOS 600D and Sony Alpha 65.

And so here is the camera we've all be waiting for, the Pentax K-30. The '30' follows on from the K20D, which makes it crystal clear who this camera is aimed at—advanced users who don't want to spend a fortune on a camera (the K-30 is expected to launch at around £700, although exact UK pricing is still TBC).

In terms of technology, the K-30 is basically a K-5. It uses the same 16-Megapixel sensor, 100% viewfinder—which is probably a first in a camera in this price range—as well as the same autofocus system and light metering. It also inherits two settings thumb-wheels and Full HD video but with added stereo sound.

However, to cut costs, Pentax has scaled down the design in some ways. The K-30 has been stripped of its second control screen (which is especially practical when using the camera on a tripod), the flash sync port and controls for selecting the autofocus mode and exposure zones. It's therefore not quite as easy to access certain handy functions for advanced users, but this helps push the retail price down considerably.

The K-30 has been treated to a re-designed body, with a chiselled, angular kind of look (especially around the focus assist light). Plus, like other Pentax consumer SLRs (such as the K-x and K-r), it'll be available in black or electric blue.

Nevertheless, with two settings wheels, a 100% viewfinder and a weatherproof finish, this camera gives you more than the average £700 SLR. The Pentax K-30 could therefore be set to follow in the footsteps of the K10D, launched at the end of 2006, which was the first weatherproof SLR to sell for well under £1,000, not to mention one of Pentax's most successful cameras.

> Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

Pentax Presents Optio LS465 with Interchangeable Face Plates

Customisable compacts have been something of a speciality for Pentax over the last couple of years. Last year's RS1500, for example, came with a selection of pre-cut paper patterns that could be used to brighten up the front of the camera under a perspex cover.

This year's customisable compact is the LS465. Instead of using paper templates, this model comes with interchangeable face plates that slot into clips on either side of the front face. The cover is then fixed in place with a circular locking system around the lens.

Otherwise, the LS465 has a 16-Megapixel sensor (although it's still a CCD) and a new 28-140 mm lens. This isn't particularly fast (f/3.9 at wide-angle, f/6.3 at telephoto) but we still hope it'll manage to do a better job than its predecessor in the RS1500.

The 2.7-inch screen keeps its 230,000-dot resolution and video is still 720p with mono sound. Plus, the LS465 has no optical or mechanical stabilisation, as Pentax's customisable camera is a decidedly entry-level snapper. And seeing as it's expected to sell for around £150 (although UK pricing is still TBC), the customisable aspect should help it stand out in the market.

> Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

TV Review: Sony Bravia KDL-26EX553, A Good Occasional TV

Sony is replacing 2011's EX320 with a new small-sized Edge LED TV—the EX553 (EX550 in mainland Europe), available with a 22-inch or 26-inch screen. One of the higher-ups at Sharp has just asked if we were ready to receive their new baby this week.

Our testers have already started clearing the way...

Sharp LC-80LE645E

<esi:include src="/price/product/13400/small"/>

> Buyer's Guide: The Best 50" and Above Televisions

Sony Tablet P Android 4.0 ICS Update Coming 24 May

Owners of the Sony P folding tablet will be pleased to hear that Sony is due to start rolling out its Android 4.0 ICS update later this week. However, when the Tablet S upgraded to Android 4 there was no staggered roll-out, so the update was available to users in all geographical zones at the same time. Let's hope that's the case this time around too.

The Sony Tablet P has two 5.5-inch screens and a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. Could this be the latest attempt to save active shutter 3D from the rapid advance of passive 3D?

Using its prototype OLED TVs displayed at the event, Samsung presented its Dual View TV concept, already showcased at the CES 2012 tech show. Dual View TVs basically play two Full HD image streams very quickly, and compatible glasses can be set to tune in to either image stream. That means that two users watching the same TV can watch different channels in Full HD.

In the picture above, for example, one user is watching a film starring Julia Roberts while the other is watching a Samsung advert. Note that both images can be seen at the same time by users who aren't wearing 3D glasses. As well as donning a pair of compatible active 3D glasses, each user will need a pair of headphones to listen to the correct soundtrack for what they're watching.

The basic principle isn't really new, as Sharp showcased something similar in 2005. However, this is clearly also a new way for Samsung to promote active 3D technology, which many competitors seem to be turning their backs on. In fact, LG is only too pleased to have converted two market heavyweights (Sony and Panasonic) to passive 3D technology.

> LG WOLED TV vs Samsung OLED TV

Smartphone Buyer's Guide Updated

With over a hundred mobile phone reviews on our site right now, finding the right handset can seem daunting. In fact, they were so surprised and concerned about our findings that they paid us a visit to double-check our results first hand. We were only too pleased to see a manufacturer take such pride in a product, but wait, it gets better ...

Panasonic's engineers came all the way from Japan to
present their new firmware for the DT50. We tested the results in an exclusive preview.

Last month we reviewed the 47DT50, a Panasonic TV with an IPS-type LCD screen and Edge LED backlighting. Our two main criticisms of this model were:

Its contrast was a little low for our liking. This unfortunately can't be corrected all that easily, as its directly linked to the screen panel hardware.

Even in True Cinema mode, we found that colour reproduction just wasn't accurate enough. In other words, Panasonic's development teams hadn't paid enough attention to calibrating this TV's colours, in our opinion.

The Japanese engineers weren't too pleased with our comments, so they decided to drop in to our test lab a few weeks back so we could double-check the findings together.

Then, a few days ago they called us up to arrange another urgent visit. So over they came, straight off the plane from Japan, proudly brandishing a USB flash drive: "we've worked on new settings and developed new firmware—you'll be the first to test it. We're keen to see what you think of it!"

So why did they have to come all the way from Japan just for that? Well, we reckon they wanted to update test TV themselves so that no confidential files could end up getting into the wrong hands ... especially if the update didn't have the desired effect! We therefore set to work testing the updated TV right there, right then, with the Japanese engineers looking on.

The suspense was palpable in our packed test lab. But, in the end, we found that Panasonic's firmware update greatly improved colour fidelity in this TV! Everyone breathed a sigh of relief at seeing such good results, even if the head engineer had still hoped to see this TV do a little better (the Delta E was around three with this prototype firmware—it's twice that in the model currently on the market).

Later in the day, the Japanese engineers were reportedly spotted leaving the building looking "quite pleased with themselves".

To be honest, we were pretty pleased too, as it's not every day you see a manufacturer bending over backwards to improve one of its products. This new firmware will apparently be made available to users "soon" and Panasonic promised to let us know as soon as it's released.

Panasonic Viera
TX-L47DT50

<esi:include src="/price/product/13095/small"/>

> Review: Panasonic Viera TX-L47DT50

> HD TV Reviews (32" and Above)

Laptop Review: Samsung Series 7 Chronos, MacBook Killer?

Samsung is pitching its Series 7 Chonos laptop as a serious rival for Apple's MacBook Pro.
