Code::Blocks is a free and open source, cross-platform IDE. It is developed in C++ using wxWidgets as the GUI toolkit. Code::Blocks has all the good features you need, having a consistent look, feel and operation across all platforms such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. In this article we will tell you how to install Code::Blocks IDE in Fedora Linux.

Install Using YUM / Repository

Code::Blocks IDE on Fedora can be installed from a third party repository (Dany’s). The repository has packages for Fedora 14, Fedora 13 and Fedora 12. The latest Code::Blocks version now supports compiller (LLVM D compiler) and helps you to develop D application with this IDE. You can install this 3rd party Code::Blocks IDE repository using the commands here:

For Fedora 14

su -c ‘rpm -Uvh http://fedora.danny.cz/danny/danny-release-14-1.noarch.rpm’

For Fedora 13

su -c ‘rpm -Uvh http://fedora.danny.cz/danny/danny-release-13-1.noarch.rpm’

For Fedora 12

su -c ‘rpm -Uvh http://fedora.danny.cz/danny/danny-release-12-1.noarch.rpm’

Install Code::Blocks IDE

After the repository is installed, Code::Blocks IDE can then be installed using the following command:

su -c 'yum install codeblocks'

Here is a screenshot of Code::Blocks IDE running in Fedora Linux:

In this article we will tell you how to install Firefox 4 Browser in Ubuntu Linux using the Ubuntu Mozilla PPA (repository).

Firefox 4, currently in beta, is one of the latest versions of the Mozilla Firefox browsers and has some of the all time best features of the Mozilla Firefox browser. We had reviewed Firefox 4.0 Beta for Linux sometime back and found that it is around 30% faster than Firefox 3.6.6 (the current stable release). In this article we will tell you how to install Firefox 4 Browser in Ubuntu Linux using the Ubuntu Mozilla PPA (repository).

This beta version of Firefox 4 browser from the Ubuntu Mozilla PPA is compatible with the following versions of Ubuntu linux:

Ubuntu 10.10 Maveric Meerkat

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Ubunty 9.10 Karmic Koala

How to Install?

Step 1:

Setup the Mozilla – Ubuntu daily PPA and update your package list using the following command:

sudo

add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa &&

sudo

apt-get update

Step 2:

After the repository gets updated, you can install Firefox-4.0 on your Ubuntu system using the following command:

sudo

apt-get

install

firefox-4.0

You can start using Firefox 4.0 by either launching it from the Applications > Internet Menu in GNOME, or directly from the command line by just using this command:

/usr/bin/firefox-4.0

However, it may be possible that after you try to launch Firefox-4.0 from the command line, what actually gets launched is the Firefox 3.6. This is a simple symbolic links issue and you can fix it by using this command:

sudo

ln

-s /usr/lib/firefox-4.0b6pre/firefox-4.0 /usr/bin/firefox-4.0

Please not that at the time of writing this article, Firefox 4.0 is a Beta 6 release so the corresponding folder name: firefox-4.0b6pre. So in case you get an error while running this command, just repace the folder name with the appropriate folder corresponding to the newer version.

Ok, everyone knows you can play games on Linux. But what spring to mind when I think about games on Linux are board games, pacman and, at best, Tux Racer and TORC. But good quality 3D games are something that we never associate with Linux. People come up with lots of excuses why there can be no good games on Linux. No, we are not going to list them here.

Frankly, that was my opinion too. But then I played Caster. All I can say about Caster is – It is freaking amazing!! It does not have the crappy graphics that other Linux games usually have. (No offence to the other games.) Its graphics is not like that of Crysis. (I am not much of a gamer and Crysis is what comes to my mind when I think of amazing graphics.) Nonetheless, I have never seen such kind of graphics on a Linux game before. I am completely impressed!

Gameplay in Caster also very good. It is a third person shooter. Basically you play as an inexperienced member of the Caster clan (probably some Warrior clan?). Your job is to help another clan (I am not sure. I went through the dialogs very quickly) get rid of some bug like creatures called Flanx.

Controls are simple. You use the usual WASD to move around, mouse to change camera angle and aim, and left click to shoot.

Ok, enough words. Take a look at what I mean below:

Well, that is all I played. I played three levels. I am not sure how many levels the demo has. I do not have enough time to finish the demo, but I will finish it, and will probably get the full version.

It is by far the best game I have ever played on Linux and I certainly recommend everyone to try the demo atleast.

The full verion is available for only $4.99. And you can download the demo for free. Link below. For a $4.99 game, what more can you ask for?

It is also available for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad.

And if you are worried about the system requirements, don’t worry most computers bought in the last few years should be sufficient.

There are quite a few online and offline tools to generate QR codes. You can also do that through a Google Chrome extension. With this extension, you can generate a QR code from some text on your browser or a link on the page.

You can get the extension from here -> QR Code Generator.

After it is installed, all you have to do is right click on a link or select a test and right click on it and select “Generate QR Code“.

The QR code will open in a new tab.

And just to check. Yes it works.

Yesterday, the Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” Beta was released. In an earlier post, we gave the links from where you can download it. In this post, we will tell you how you can upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 Beta from Ubuntu 10.04.

Upgrading is quite easy, but since this Maverick is still a beta, the usual warning – “Do not install it on a production machine. It is meant for testing”.

Now, press ALT+F2 to open the Run dialog and type the following and press Enter:

update-manager -d

The Ubuntu Update Manager should start and it will show that Ubuntu 10.10 is available. Click on Upgrade.

Then you will get the release note. It will also have the warning since this is not yet a stable release. Click on Upgrade and the upgrade will start.

After updating the sources etc. you will need to make a final confirmation to start the upgrade. Once you click on Start Upgrade, there is no turning back. So, if you want to go ahead, click on Start Upgrade and wait.

That is all there is. After a reboot, you will have Ubuntu 10.10 up and running.

A Job Posting On the Valve Website awakens people's hopes about Steam for Linux.

The Steam on Linux rumor is up and running again.

A couple of weeks ago, Valve has officially made it clear that they are not developing a Steam client for Linux. This came as a big surprise for a lot of people who had been expecting it, after all there were reports of the Mac client containing Linux codes.

Well, whatever those codes are doing there, Valve has made it pretty clear that they are not working on a Linux port of Steam at that moment. I see no reason to question what Valve has said. They have never lied straight at our faces as far as I can remember.

Anyway, it seems like people still want to believe that Valve is working on Steam. They are now referring to a job posting in the Valve website which says one of the responsibilities is “Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform“. Here is a screenshot:

Sounds like they are indeed looking to start working on Linux, right? Well here is the bummer – That posting has been there for three years. Yes it is not a new posting, it has been just lying there for three longs years. You can check it here if you want -> Internet Archive Way Back Machine.

This started probably after someone posted that in Reddit and in reply someone also pointed out that it is three years old, with the link I just posted above.

Yes I know that we want to have Steam in Linux. But rather than getting excited, this makes me sad. The fact that the job posting has been there for three years means that either Valve is not hiring anyone (Then why put up the job posting? To please the Linux community?) or that no one is applying. Either way this does not mean anything in the current circumstances, I am afraid.

Valve might bring Steam on Linux in the future. They have not said that they will never develop it. But right now, there is nothing to be excited about.

Ksplice Uptrack is a really cool technology which allows you to update the Linux Kernel without rebooting your computer. In this article we will tell you how to Download, Update and Configure Uptrack on Ubuntu and Fedora systems.

It is a well known fact that you can install updates in Linux without rebooting, unlike in Windows. However, when it comes to Kernel Updates, you are required to re-boot your Linux systems too! Well, as they say there is a solution of every problem on this Planet, so is Uptrack for Linux! Ksplice Uptrack is a really cool technology which allows you to update the Linux Kernel without rebooting your computer.

Ksplice Uptrack is available for various Linux distributions, but at a small monthly fee after a 30 day trial period.However, Ksplice recently announced that Uptrack would be available for free on Fedora! Uptrack is already free for Ubuntu Linux. In this article we will tell you how to Download, Update and Configure Uptrack on Ubuntu and Fedora systems.

For Fedora Linux

Uptrack currently supports the latest version of Fedora Linux – Fedora 13 Goddard. You can download Uptrack for Fedora 13 Goddard directly from this link: ksplice.com/uptrack/dist/fedora/13/ksplice-uptrack.rpm.

Installation can be started by double clicking the downloaded RPM file. You will require to install some additional packages for the installation but the package manager will handle this for you.

You have to accept the terms of condition in order to start the installation.

For Ubuntu Linux

Uptrack for Ubuntu is also available Free for the latest Ubuntu release – Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. You can directly download it from this link: ksplice.com/uptrack/dist/lucid/ksplice-uptrack.deb. Uptrack is available for older Ubuntu releases too: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic & Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty.

As with Fedora, in Ubuntu also you should start the installation by double clicking the downloaded DEB file. Once you do that, the GDebi Package Manager will take over the installation and you can see that 3 additional dependencies need to be satisfied. The package manager will handle this.

After this, you need to accept the terms and conditions which are shown, for the installation to continue.

Post-Install Configuration – Ubuntu & Fedora

After installation completes, After you do so, the Ksplice Uptrack Manager will appear. It has all latest Kernel updates and the latest fixes to Linux ready to be installed, all without rebooting, as long as Fedora / Ubuntu publishes updates for a major kernel version. The Uptrack panel icon will notify you whenever new updates are available.

For auto installation of the updates, make sure you change the following in the Uptrack setting file:

Change the value of autoinstall to yes in the file: /etc/uptrack/uptrack.conf

Shown below is the Uptrack Updates Manager that contains latest kernel updates:

Twitter has killed the basic authentication system used in a lot of Twitter clients. So, to continue using Twitter in Gwibber, you have to update to the latest version of Gwibber.

Twitter has killed the basic authentication system used in a lot of Twitter clients yesterday. Earlier we wrote about how you can get the latest Choqok to continue using Twitter. It seems like the current version of Gwibber in the PPA does not support OAuth either.

So, to continue using Twitter in Gwibber, you have to update to the latest version of Gwibber. You can get it from either the Ubuntu Desktop PPA or the Gwibber Daily PPA. I suggest you use the Gwibber Daily PPA. The Ubuntu Desktop PPA has some stuffs that you may not want to update.

So to update, open the Terminal and execute the following commands:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-get upgrade

If you want to use the Ubuntu Desktop PPA, replace
ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa
in the first command with
ppa:ubuntu-desktop/ppa .

Canadian Indie Rock Band, Arcade Fire, has released what can only be described as the probably the most revolutionary music video ever.

As part of the Chrome Experiment, they have released an interactive music video for their song “We Used To Wait”. By using some amazing HTML5 stuffs and data from Google Maps, it creates an amazing music video.

The aim is to invoke nostalgic memories. So, you are actually supposed to enter the place you grew up. But you can just enter any place.

The postcard

You can also create a postcard. Again, this is beautifully rendered using HTML5. You can then send the postcard. (Hopefully they will not actually print and send it. :p)

Try it out here – The Wilderness Downtown. It is sure to open your mind to the capabilities of HTML5.

Note: The video is very resource intensive.

The default settings in PySDM would only automatically mount partitions for the Super User. In this article we will tell you how to have PySDM mount partitions automatically for all users.

In Ubuntu, your windows partitions have to be configured to mount automatically. Although there is the long, boring command line way of automatically mounting your Windows partitions by editing a file called fstab, we have already told you about a nifty GUI based tool called PySDM using which you can easily configure your Windows partitions to mount automatically.

However, the default settings in PySDM would only automatically mount partitions for the Root user (Super User). With the basic PySDM setup, you may end up getting an error while Ubuntu tries to mount the partitions automatically, saying Only Root is allowed to mount this partition. In order to have PySDM mount all partitions automatically for all users including the Root user you have to add these settings as shown here.

Step 1: For installing PySDM and knowing about how to configure it for basic auto-mount setups, read this guide first.

Step 2: Now in the field for Options, enter: default,users,noauto.See this screenshot below for details:

Step 3: Click on Apply and then close. Now after you restart Ubuntu you can see that all users are able to mount your configured hard disk partitions automatically.

Since Twitter has ended support for the basic authentication in favour of OAuth, you have to upgrade to Choqok 1.0 Beta 2 in order to continue using Twitter.

Today Twitter is ending support for the basic authentication in favour of OAuth. So, if you are a Choqok user, you have to upgrade to Choqok 1.0 Beta 2 in order to continue using Twitter. In an earlier post we gave the link to the source. But not everybody can build from source and even when you can, when it is already available in a PPA, why bother?

Choqok 1.0 Beta 2 is not yet available in either the Backports or the Beta Backports PPA. So, we are going to use Adilson dos Santos Dantas’s Experimental PPA.

Open the Konsole and execute the following commands:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:adilson/experimental

$ sudo apt-get update

If you already have Choqok (earlier version) installed,

$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Or, if you do have Choqok installed,

$ sudo apt-get install choqok

After installation, you may want to refer to our guide on how to use OAuth in Choqok.

Diaspora becomes available to developers from September 15. Users will, however, have to wait for the alpha in October.

In an update to a blog post, the Diaspora team have clarified that the 15th September release date they revealed earlier was only the release date for the source code. The consumer facing alpha will be released in October.

This is what they wrote:

To clarify, September 15 will be our open-source developer release. At that time, we will open up our github repository, publish our roadmap, and shift our development style to be more community oriented. We intend on launching a consumer facing alpha in October.

This is not a setback or any kind of pushing back of the release date. When they announced September 15 as the release date for Diaspora, it has lead to some confusion that users are actually going to be able to use Diaspora from that day. Just to clarify on the situation, they have posted this message, before people gets too excited with the September 15 date.

If you are a developer, though, you can start working on the code from September 15. Users will have to wait for the alpha in October.

Empathy, the default IM client in GNOME, is getting a brand new feature - meta-contacts. It allows you to group together different services belonging to the same user into one.

Empathy, the default IM client in GNOME, is getting a brand new feature – meta-contacts.

If you have used more than one one IM service, you would have no doubt seen that the same person is listed as many times as the number of services he is using. For example, if, say Bob uses both Gtalk and MSN, Bob is listed twice in Empathy – one for the MSN account and the other for Gtalk. The same thing happens when someone has more than one accounts with the same service, maybe one for personal use and another for work. Or, it could be you who have multiple accounts.

In Empathy, they have tackled this problem by introducing meta-contacts. With meta-contacts, under a single meta-contact name a number of different contacts can be grouped. So, now instead of having Bob (MSN) and Bob (Gtalk), there is a single entry Bob and the MSN and Gtalk accounts are grouped under it. This will create a much cleaner interface and probably avoid confusions.

This is how it is implemented in Empathy now:

Right now only contacts having the same service ID are grouped together automatically. Most of the linking have to be done manually. But hey its is a good start!

Availability

This feature is currently available in Empathy 2.31.91. Only the source code is available right now. However, it should come to Debian experimental soon and probably to the Ubuntu repository too.

For now you have to build it from source if you want to use it. Download the source from here.

GMail has introduced a new feature today - Priority Inbox. Now GMail will sort your incoming emails to decide which ones needs a reply from you and which ones you can look at later.

GMail has introduced a new feature today – Priority Inbox. Priority Inbox does what its name suggest – sort your emails by priority.

Many users get a lot of emails. The spam filter in GMail does a very good job at eliminating all the spams. Nevertheless, there are many other emails which are not spams but are less important than others, i.e. you may not need a reply, and yet others may be important enough that you have to reply.

This is where the Priority Inbox comes in. Priority Inbox divides the emails into three categories:

Important and unread

Starred

Everything else

When an email is received, GMail will predict if that email is important and mark them for you. As you use this feature more and more, it will get smarter at categorizing your emails. If an email is incorrectly marked in your opinion, you can edit it and GMail will learn for that.

This is one feature that is sure to increase GMail user’s productivity a lot. Emails from people that you generally reply to will be marked important, so that you can, well, reply to it; and others like emails from certain services, mailing list etc. that you do not need to reply will go into Everything else.

GMail has already started rolling out this feature and all the GMail users will have it by this week. However, for users of the Google Apps, their account administrator has to turn on this feature.

In case you do not know, Firefox is also making a browser for mobile devices. It is codenamed Fennec for now and the alpha currently available for Android and the Nokia N900.

In case you do not know, Firefox is also making a browser for mobile devices. It is codenamed Fennec for now and the alpha currently available for Android and the Nokia N900. It had been available in the Nokia N900 for sometime but for Android it was released just a few days back.

I am very satisfied with the stock Android browser. I even prefer it over Opera Mini. So, when I heard of Fennec being available for Android, I was excited no doubt, but I did not expect too much from it either.

However, after using it for one day, I admit that it is brilliant. Yes, it is an alpha and it seems sluggish at times and takes a long time to start but what I am most excited about are the features it brings. Let us take a look one by one.

This is the screen you see when you start Fennec for the first time. It introduces you to two very exciting features in Fennec – Add-ons and Sync. Yes, Mozilla has freaking brought add-ons to a mobile browser! And the sync feature is also a very exciting feature. We will come to these later.

To access tabs, settings and other controls, Fennec has a rather ingenious solution. In the stock Android browser, you have to access those from the menu. With Fennec, however, it is different.

Swipe your finger to the right, and you get the tabs side panel. At the bottom of the panel are the Bookmarks and Remote Tabs button. After you have synced your device, you can open the opened tabs in your other device (say laptop/desktop) from Fennec. The book marks are also synced by default.

And when you swipe your finger to the left, you get the right panel. It has a bookmark button, back and forward. At the bottom is the settings.

Clicking on the settings button brings you to the settings page.

Nothing interesting here. It has all the settings options anyone would expect to see. You have to enter your Sync username, password and the Secret Phrase here to set up sync with your desktop or with other devices.

The four buttons at the bottom are for back, settings (which is currently on the screen), downloads and Add-ons.

As we have said before, Fennec supports add-ons. This is probably the first Android browser to support Add-ons. (Correct me if i am wrong.) By default, four add-ons are installed. There are plenty of others available from which you can choose.

This is the default start page for Fennec. Here you find the previously opened tabs and Tabs from other computers set up through Sync. And while we are on the subject, here is what the Tabs from your other computer brings me:

Yes, the tabs that was open at the time in Firefox 4 on my laptop. (Sorry about the image being in landscape mode.)

So, where does this leave Fennec? Right now, it is an alpha so, it would be stupid to criticize its slow startup and slight sluggishness. However, the features that it is bringing makes it a very strong contender to be the best browser on Android. Its navigation system using side panels is a pleasure to use. The presence of Add-ons is also sure to boost its adoption once it reaches a stable release. And we cannot forget Sync too. It will help you transfer your desktop browsing experience to your mobile device – well to a certain extent atleast.

If you want to install it in your Android device, go to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/alpha from your device and install it.

(Note: You need Android 2.0 or above for Fennec. Check the System Requirements for more information.)
