DotNetNuke SEO Guide

Well, sort of... Google has released an SEO Starter Guide. It's a good beginners guide to SEO and covers many of the basics that anyone can apply to their DotNetNuke site and create an SEO friendly DNN.

DotNetNuke 5 RC2 Released to the Public

DotNetNuke 5 RC2 (login required) has been released to the public. Get it while it's hot! There were some problems with digRotate in RC1 which RC2 should fix. We will be testing our modules in the coming weeks to ensure compatibility.

REMEMBER don't install DNN 5 RC2 in your production DNN!

DotNetNuke Professional Edition

The big announcement at OpenForce 08 is that DotNetNuke will come in two flavors, Professional Edition and Community Edition. Currently it looks like Professional is simply Community Edition + Support from DotNetNuke Corp. This is really no big surprise since Shaun Walker was hinting at such a move in Floss Weekly interview.

One thing I found interesting was that the first release of DNN Professional will be based on the 4.9 core, not the 5.0 core. I would have maybe waited for DNN 5.0 core to be released so that's less versions they would need to support.

I have emailed DNN Corp many times about different issues, and I never get a response. So far, I'm 1 for 8 on emails that I have sent to corp. If I am a business interested in buying DNN Professional, I would look the other way after the first or second email not responded to. I imagine it's only going to get worse now that they will need to support more customers with the Professional Edition. It's the chicken and the egg. Need money to hire staff, need staff to make money. My suggestion to DNN corp is to buy a good Ticket system with the money from the first DNN Professional sale. :)

System integrators will want those support dollars, not buy DotNetNuke Professional. How does a system integrator show a client that DNN is a supported commercial product, but you don't want the client to buy the commercial product because that's less money for them?

In then end, lets just hope it means more DNN fish in the DNN fish bowl.

High Profile DotNetNuke Site

With the 2008 Presidential elections around the corner, I was helping a friend to get registered so he can vote. I Goggled up Pennsylvania voter registrations and I came across www.votespa.com. I directed my friend to the site to get the info he needed. He then asked me if I happened to notice what they were running on the site. He was tipped off by the DotNetNuke favicon which I completely missed. Sure enough they are using DotNetNuke to run their site. I can’t say that I follow all the big sites that use DNN, but I would think this is one of the more high profile ones and I think they did an amazing job with it! To rest the entire state of Pennsylvania online voter information on DotNetNuke says a lot for the product. And there is nothing better than a DotNetNuke site that doesn’t have that DotNetNuke feel to it.

Looking at the traffic, with election time rolling around, it seems to be getting more visitors than a few other popular DNN sites. I would be curious to know what kind of hardware they have behind the scenes.

Well done Pennsylvania, now just make sure you stay on top of those potholes this winter-n-at!

Floss Weekly interview of Shaun Walker

Shaun gave a nice interview with Floss Weekly. It covers many of the DNN basics and some good info about the history of DotNetNuke. It also touches on some of the Open Source aspects of DotNetNuke. A few thoughts:

Shaun you forgot to mention a Contest module. :)
DNN uses a Proprietary Source code repository? Yikes! My condolences.
Support Mono? No offense, you can get a good DotNetNuke hosting account for $6/month.
Did Shaun hint at a commercial version of DotNetNuke? Could DotNetNuke go the way of other large OpenSource applications?

Rotate Flash SWF content in DotNetNuke

A user emailed us asking if our modules could rotate multiple Flash SWF files each time the user refreshed the web page. They had several sharp looking Flash title banners they wanted to rotate through on their DotNetNuke site.

Our digRotate module can do this in 2 different ways. First you will need to add digRotate to your DNN site and choose the Rotator type of Rotator. Then you will need to tell digRotate to rotate your content on postback.

Method 1

The easiest method you would simply create your Content item in digRotate and use the FCK Editor to Insert the flash object.

Method 2

Another method would be to create a hidden DotNetNuke page and add a digFlash module for each Flash SWF file you wish to rotate. This will use the swfobject framework to display the Flash file which is a better method than just inserting the object onto the page like the FCK editor insert. When you then add your Content item in digRotate, you are going to choose the content type of Module, then select one of the digFlash modules you inserted in your hidden DotNetNuke page.

It's always nice to see our modules being used in action, it's even better when one one of those sites gets recognized. The latest DotNetNuke newsletter mentions ZoneDiet.com. digRotate is sure to grab your attention on their home page. The custom template buttons they created to match the look of their site shows how digRotate can be modified to mimic the look of your site. Great job guys, and thanks for using digRotate!
