Ceremony at the Quaid's Mausoleum

On 25th Dec, Change of guards ceremony was held here at the mausoleum of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah. A smartly turned out contingent from Pakistan Military Academy Kakul took over the duties at the mausoleum of the Quaid from Pak Air Force Guards this morning. Commandant Pakistan Military Academy Kakul Major General Sadiq Ali was the chief guest on this august occasion. He laid floral wreath and offered ‘fateha’. A large number of people in Karachi also visit the mausoleum to pay tribute to the father of the nation.

Althought PDA managed to get a website but like the drums of garbage in the streets that they attend after years they didnot updated their site from almost 2 years. It was better not to have a website if PDA cannot update and facilitate the people of Peshawer. Its shame for the government of KPK that their performance is so poor relatively to other provinces. All the other provinces are atleast working in their provincial capitals and working to develop provincial capitals. But in KPK if this is the performance of PDA then you can imagine what will be the performance in the other cities.

Our Chief Minister Amin Haider Hoti i think never read the social studies book and don't know that provincial capital of KPK is Peshawer. I think he considers Mardan as the provincial capital of KPK. Because as much he is moving everything to Mardan. All the developments were done in Mardan but Peshawar remained as it was 5 years back or i will not be mistaken that it became worst than it was in the MMA Government.

The big new icon is of the contest for designing of logo for new peshawer Water and Sanitization company. I dont knw from how many years its appearing here as new. We dont knw what happend to the contest. We dont knw that if W & S company has any logo now or not. The only way to know that was IF these lazy people updated this site.

Debunking Malala conspiracy theories.

If someone asks me what are Pakistanis good at, my instant answer will be making up conspiracy theories. When an innocent courageous 14 year old girl almost died defending girls’ right to education, the Taliban apologists and the confused privileged educated urbanites didn’t take much time to come up with an unending stream of conspiracy theories.
There is nothing surprising here but what sinks my heart is the fact the temporary sympathy faded away quickly, translating into a resolve to fight religious extremism a far cry. If they can not even sympathise with a 14 year old innocent child without their ifs and buts, what do we call them other than heartless insensitive idiots.

Samia Raheel Qazi: Malala is a CIA Agent
The campaign to malign Malala was lead by the usual suspects – Jamaat-e-Islami and their supporters. Samia Raheel Qazi, daughter ex-Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed was probably the first one to float this conspiracy theory calling Malala a CIA agent. She tweeted an image tagging media personnels.

The reality is that this was a UNICEF organised meeting in July 2009 attended not just by Malala Yousafzai and her father but also grassroot activists working in the Swat region. The lady in the picture is not Malala’s mother but a women education activist (NGO worker) Dishad Begum. They were all invited to meet Richard Hollbrooke following the Swat operation when military had gained control of the area. The meeting was to discuss the education infrastructure and what follow up activities were required to resume schools in the area were needed. Conspiracy theorists are welcomed to feel ashamed once they listen to what Malala said to Richard Hollbrooke – “if you can help us with Education, then please do“.

If seen sitting in a meeting makes you a CIA Agent, does it make Imran Khan a CIA agent too? Qazi Hussain Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami is on record having said that he feels at home when he visits America, does it make him a CIA Agent too. Qazi’s daugher Samia Raheel Qazi leading the propaganda campaign against Malala was educated abroad, is she also an Agent? Why Samia Raheel Qazi getting education abroad is okay but Malala asking for help in education, not for herself but the girls of Swat, wrong?

Comparing Malala and Aafia Siddiqi

The next propaganda tactic of the religious right was to cash in on the sentiment of the public associated with Islam and Aafia Siddiqi. Using religion and Anti-Americanism always works in Pakistan considering people’s sentiments and that is what the conspiracy theorists cashed in. Anti-Malala campaign was launched using the argument that she had said that her political ideals are Benazir Bhutto, President Obama and Bacha Khan. She was asked this question during a TV Talk Show with Hamid Mir and the question was in political context and hence her answer. The religious right claimed that for a girl whose ideals do not include the Prophet Muhammad does not deserve this sympathy. Further, the compared her with Aafia Siddiqi claiming her ideals were Islam and Quran and she is the real daughter of the nation.

Let me remind the readers that Al Qaeda Deputy Leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri himself came to the aid of Aafia Siddiqi. On 4 November 2010, Al-Qaeeda’s media wing released a new audio message where Zawahiri asks, “Who Will Take Revenge for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui?.” Can someone tell me how many more innocent Pakistani women, or Muslim women for that matter, had the privilege of getting such support from Al-Qaeda’s top leadership? Why is it that from millions of Muslim women persecuted, countless Baluch women abducted, all Zawahiri cared about was Aafia Siddiqi? What prompts such sympathy from world’s most lethal terrorist for an ‘innocent’ Aafia Siddiqi which is missing for many more innocent Muslim women?
If it is unacceptable to sympathise with Malala just because she idealise President Obama politically, why do we conveniently ignore that Aafia Siddiqi, unlike Malala, holds a US citizenship and was educated at the American university MIT on American scholarship funds? Why is the Anti-American sentiment applicable on Malala and not on Aafia Siddiqi? If association with anything American is a scale of how good you are, guess Aafia Siddiqi is the one who is much more ‘American’ that little child Malala. She holds a Pakistani nationality, never wet to the US, was educated in Pakistani schools and almost gave her life defending the right to education of Pakistani girls. What did Aafia did for women of Pakistan?
I would also like to know which verses in the Quran, which Aafia Siddiqi idealises, promoted her to purchase items on internet including about $10,000 worth of night-vision goggles, body armour and 45 military-style books including The Anarchist’s Arsena; and why did she need these. I would also like to understand which sayings of the Prophet prompted Aafia Siddiqi to open up a post box in the name of Majid Khan, an alleged al-Qaida operative accused of plotting to blow up petrol stations in the Baltimore area. By saying that Aafia Siddiqi idealised Prophet Muhammad and Quran and knowing what she has been upto, are we trying to say that Quran and Prophet Muhammad prompted her to become an extremist?
I would also appreciate if someone tells me how did an innocent Aafia Siddiqi managed to marry Ammar al-Baluchi (as second husband), a nephew of the 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, at a small ceremony near Karachi. Further, the conspiracy theorists who readily believe in photoshopped images are finding it too difficult to believe in evidence given by Aafia Siddiqi’s ex-husband Amjad Khan of her suspicious behaviour and involvement in Jihadi activities. According to him, his new wife was a more fiery character than he wished. “She was so pumped up about jihad,” he said. He adds that Aafia wanted the couple to move to Bosnia just 6 months after the marriage – why Bosnia of all places, may I ask? he further tells that in the winter post 9/11, she pressed him to go on “jihad” to Afghanistan, where she had arranged for them to work in a hospital in Zabul province. Khan refused, sparking a vicious row. “She went hysterical, beating her hands on my chest, asking for divorce,” he recalled. He also claims that she never went to Bagram and he saw her with his own eyes in Islamabad and Karachi but never went public for protection of his children.
Aafia Siddiqi’s uncle Shams-ul-Hassan Farooqi has similar tales to tell. He tells that she begged him to smuggle her into Afghanistan into the hands of the Taliban. “That was her main point,” he recalled. “She said: ‘I will be safe with the Taliban.’”
Remember the first verse ever revealed to Prophet Muhammad: Iqra (read). Remember the Prophet said education is mandatory for both men and women. When Aafia Siddiqi was busy buying equipment for a possible terrorist attack and marrying Al-Qaeda terrorist, it was 14 year old Malala fighting a battle against barbarians carrying the torch of Education forward. So, who was actually idealising the Prophet and Quran?
Please have a little shame before you compare an innocent child with an extremists – even if you think she was not treated in the right way, there is considerable evidence that she was an extremist.

Of course this is not a mistake in translation – this is a deliberate attempt to malign the little child by putting words into her mouth exploiting the religious sentiment of the public.

Malala episode is a staged drama, she was never shot

The next conspiracy completely denies that the event took place conveniently ignoring the fact that it was not just Malala but two of her friends named Shazia and Kainat who got injured too and several people of Swat are eyewitness. It has become a fashion in the country of conspiracy theorists even to ignore the responsibility claimed by the terrorists. They completely ignored the fact that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan had claimed the responsibility of the attack and had warned that they will attack her again if she survives. They further added that they will also attack other people who support secular causes. To add to that, they later issued a press statement using verses from the Quran proving that their attack on Malala was legitimate inline with the Sharia.
It did not end here, in the wave of temporary sympathy, Pakistani media sided with Malala but Taliban were not happy with this. They warned the media that they will attack them but this did not convince the conspiracy theorists that this event has actually happened.
All I can say is take you head out of the sand – there has to be an end to this Ostrich Syndrome as you are only making a fool of yourself.

Where was Malala hit? – left or right?

Next, they came up with the theory that the Pakistan Army, The US, the hospital management in Pakistan and UK and the media all are party to staging this drama and this incident never happened. They picked up some images of the injured child claiming some of them show the wound on the right while some on the left of her head. A little knowledge of image processing and tools like Photoshop would have been handy to avoid this cheap conspiracy theories. Let me show you how can you invert images from Left to Right or Right to Left on click of a button:

How did Malala’s clothes changed all of sudden?

In another bizzare attempt, they claim that Malala’s clothes are different in the two pictures above. Lack of knowledge comes to aid again – ignorance is bliss, as they say. She is wearing a hospital gown in blue which is a regular practice in all hospitals worldwide.
The hospital gown is made of fabric that can withstand repeated laundering in hot water, usually cotton, and is fastened at the back with twill tape ties.Healthcare workers, especially in hospitals, find thin hospital gowns convenient for listening to the heart and lungs. For nurses, giving injections in the buttocks, abdomen, or thighs is easier when the patient is wearing a gown rather than street clothing.Hospital gowns are much thinner and looser than regular clothing, so patients are less likely to overheat.

Using fake images of drone attack victims

The religious right has excelled at using fake images to gather public support. Only few months back they used countless fake images to cash in on sympathy regarding the Burma Muslims. Here is a list of such fake images. Using the same skillset and cheap tactics, this time they used fake images calling them victims of drone attacks and the argument that why so much noise for Malala and not the drone attack victims. One example follows:

Yes, her name is Laiba but she was not a drone victim, instead shot by Pakistan Army/FC in Peshawar. Read more here and DAWN report regarding this girl here. None is stopping you to protest for the drone attack victims but (i) why do you have to resort to cheap tactics, misinformation and lies and (ii) what do you have to remain silent on Malala to do that?
Further, while victims of drones are collateral damage and regrettable (not targetted), Malala is a targeted attack – she was attacked because she took on the Taliban, she took a stand for the education of girls in a war torn region. The civilian drone attack victims are not attacked as a target, they are not victimised for their identity or for who they are or what they do.

Why raise voice for Malala only? What is so special about her?

Surprise, Surpirse! What’s special about Malala is another concern of the Taliban apologists.
Before I answer that, Malala has actually exposed many bigots within us and left answers why she is special. Below are the press releases of two of Pakistan’s political parties issued after the attack on Malala. Although the ideological support for Taliban in Pakistan isn’t lacking but this incident, atleast temporarily made them very unpopular and there was a strong wave of sympathy in public for Malala. This was probably one of those chances when one can safely speak for the oppressed and against the oppressor because that was the direction the tide of time had taken, you could go with the flow.
Now read the press releases and tell me if these strong parties had little courage to take on the oppressor even at this moment:

Did you find the word Taliban? Did you see anyone taking on these barbarins when an innocent child is ruthlessly attacked? NO!
In a country where large political parties do not have the guts to take a firm stand against the oppressor, to speak against brutality and side with the oppressed, this little child had the courage to do that. Please tell me which other 14 year old have you heard talking with this clarity and courage that too in a region just got rid of Taliban control? She did not went to an elite school in an urban capital. If a child has the knowledge to understand the problems of her region and country, can talk about them, can say what is right and what is wrong, can take on oppressors with no fear; then that my friend is no ordinary child. She is special.
She was attacked just because of that. She had gathered the courage to do and say what many in this country could not do. I ask you to pickup the press releases issues by leaders and political parties in all those years when Pakistanis were killed by suicide bombs and find the word Taliban. In a country where leaders do not have the guts to name the culprits and suffice on hollow condemnations, this brave 14 year old took on them and was attacked in a targeted episode. Malala reminds me of Zainab in the darbar of Yazid in Damascus in the 7th century.

Malala’s links to Adam Ellick, a journalist with alleged CIA links

Another theory goes on to claim that the journalist Adam Ellick who met Malala and interviewed here was a undercover CIA agent and used to hide his identity not to be identified as an outsider.

There is nothing fishy about it – it is a regular practice in journalism, the idea behind which is security and a respect for local culture, or sometimes just a personal interest of the journalist to explore and experience the local culture when they are at another place for their professional duties.

Where was Malala shot?

The above pictures are from hospital in Pakistan. According to the report provided by the doctors at the Birmingham hospital where she is being treated, the teenager was struck just above the back of her left eye, with the bullet travelling down the side of her jaw and damaging the skull. It went through her neck and lodged in the tissue above her shoulder blade on the left.

The wound us clearly visible in first pictures and partly in latest images looking blackish where it has been covered by the dupatta. The hospital staff in UK was more concerned about the cultural sensitiveness covering the Muslim girl with scarf and appropriate clothing and didn’t realise that in a country of conspiracy theorists, they have to publicly show the wounds of a innocent girl to prove she has been victimised. Further, this is how professional and responsible health care works – putting the patient and their privacy first, not satisfaction of the conspiracy theorists. Also, there are rules governing the media in the UK and unlike developing countries like Pakistan, you can not blatantly show even body parts following a suicide bombing incident.

The Kalasha or Kalash, are indigenous people residing in the Chitral District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. They speak the Kalasha language, from the Dardic family of the Indo-Iranian languages, and are considered a unique tribe among the Indo-Aryan peoples of Pakistan.

They are related to the Nuristani people of the adjacent Nuristan (historically known as Kafiristan) province of Afghanistan. An autochthonous and polytheistic by the late 19th century much of Nuristan had converted to Islam, while the Kalasha of Chitral maintain their own separate cultural traditions.

The culture of Kalash people is unique and differs completely from the various ethnic groups surrounding them. They are polytheists and nature plays a highly significant and spiritual role in their daily life. As part of their religious tradition, sacrifices are offered and festivals held to give thanks for the abundant resources of their three valleys. Kalasha Desh (the three Kalash valleys) is made up of two distinct cultural areas, the valleys of Rumbur and Brumbret forming one and Birir valley the other, Birir valley being the most traditional of the two.Kalash mythology and folklore has been compared to that of ancient Greece, but they are much closer to Indo-Iranian (Vedic and pre-Zoroastrian) traditions. Some of the Kalash people in their own traditions claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great's soldiers, however, extensive genetic testing has shown no connection.The Kalash's origins have fascinated anthropologists due to the unusually high frequency of light hair, skin, and eyes (particularly green). Some Pashtuns and Persians have been known to have blond hair or green eyes (such as Sharbat Gula, Afghan woman who was the subject of a famous photograph by journalist Steve McCurry).

Islam, Blasphemy and West

Once again Islam and Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is attacked by the west. The US is mourning the death of Chris Stevens (US ambassador to Libya) and three other Americans, killed in Benghazi and the filmmaker of the controversial movie is trying to save his life hiding his face.

In this most recent act of blasphemy an anti-Islam film by the name of “Innocence of Muslims” sparked deadly protests in the Middle East, amid conflicting claims of Jewish or Coptic Christian involvement. The film’s director Sam Bacile said Tuesday he is American-Israeli and had Jewish financial backing. He went into hiding after the protests in Egypt and Libya over his low-budget movie.

According to Sam Bacile, he had raised $5 million to make it from about 100 Jewish donors, and used some 60 actors and 45 crew members to make the two-hour movie in a three-month period last year in California.

The film was screened in one Hollywood movie theater about three months ago, and sank without trace. But after the failure of English version an Arabic-language dubbed version was released last week and footage was aired by an Egyptian TV station, triggering protests.

This is not the first occasion that Christians or Jews used media as a tool to malign Islam. A Christian surveyor, Professor Edward reported in the TIME Magazine of April 16, 1979 that in a span of 150 years, from 1800 CE to 1950 CE over 60,000 books have been written against Islam. It works out to more than one book against Islam every day.

What is blasphemy?

Christians define blasphemy as:

“The public or criminal libel of speaking matter relating to God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, or the Book of Common Prayer, intending to wound the feelings of mankind or to excite contempt and hatred against the Church under any law established, or to promote immorality.”

The punishment for blasphemy in most of the major religions is death. It is stated in the Old Testament of the Bible, which is the authority for both the Jews and the Christians:

“And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him.” [Book of Leviticus 24:16]

Moreover, if we read Manusmriti, the Law book of the Hindus, it says:

“If a man born of a lower class intentionally bothers a priest, the king should punish him physically with various forms of corporal and capital punishment that make men shudder.” [Manusmriti 9:248]

Blasphemy in Islam, as in other faiths, is speech that is insulting to God. In Muslim history, blasphemy came to be associated mainly with perceived insults to the prophet of Islam.

Islamic traditions indicate that from the start of Islamic history, speaking against Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وسلم had come to be regarded an intolerable act within the Muslims. Later, legal scholars began to discuss blasphemy, whether against God, the prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , or his companions, in the context of apostasy (riddah) and unbelief (kufr). Islamic Law takes a more severe view toward reviling Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وسلم than it does toward reviling God. By the beginning of the fourth Islamic century, a consensus had developed among the scholars that the one who insults the prophet of Islam must be put to death. Muslim nations today who seek to abide by Islamic Law continue to mete out punishment to citizens accused of blasphemy.

In 1982, Pakistani President Zia ul-Haqq introduced Section 295B into the Pakistan Penal Code, punishing “defiling the Holy Qur’an” with life imprisonment. In 1986, Section 295C was introduced, mandating the death penalty for “use of derogatory remarks in respect of the Holy Prophet.”

Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم had ordered to his followers “Whoever curses a prophet kill him,” (Tabarani, Daraqutni) and there are many examples of people during his time who were guilty of blaspheming Islam and its Prophet. Most of these people were assassinated with Muhammad’s blessing, and no punishment or compensation was imposed on the murderers.

Why blasphemy law is different in Islam and other Religions / West.

In Islam blasphemy is treated as Treason. In order to properly grasp the significance of why blasphemy are treated as Treason, it is crucial to note that the Islamic concepts of “State, nation/nationality,” “citizenship” and “naturalization” are drastically different from these notions as we understand and routinely use them in the Western secular countries where they are defined as follows: a “nation” is defined as:

- “a body of people recognized as an entity by virtue of their historical, linguistic or ethnic links; a body of people united under a particular political organization, and usually occupying a defined territory.”

- And a “state” is defined as:

“a self-governing political community occupying its own territory; a partly autonomous member of a political federation; the political organism as an abstract concept.”

Islam came to class these notions among the evil traits of humanity and tried to bring about a cure. What is the Islamic cure? Or to put it another way: How different then is the Islamic concept? To start with, the basis of the Islamic nationality is religious not political, ethnic, linguistic or regional.

A common ideology is the basis of “nationality” among the Muslims and Islam is this ideology and this Islamic ideology is a synthesis of the requirements both of the body and the soul. After all, life in this world is but ephemeral, and there must be a difference between the behavior of a man and a beast.

“Naturalization” (to grant citizenship) or “nationality” in Islam is a thing depending solely upon the will and the voluntary choice of the individual, not on an essentially ineluctable accident of nature.

In Islam, contemptuous, irreverent speech or sacrilegious acts, not only about God , but also about the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and all other Prophets, and the members of these Prophets’ households, as well as the holy scriptures, including the Qur’an, and other things that are of a similar religious nature (i.e., which are regarded as sacred) are all acts of blasphemy.

Muslims regard blasphemy to be as heinous a crime as apostasy. Since blasphemy is tantamount to apostasy, which in Islam is an act of political treason, (i.e. a crime against the state which is a capital offence) the punishment for blasphemy is the same as the punishment for apostasy. In other words, by committing blasphemy, a Muslim takes himself out of the pale of Islam and becomes an infidel, an apostate. As to the question of the severity of punishment for treason, we need only mention the fact that almost every country and every nation in the world regards Political Treason as a capital offence which calls for capital punishment involving forfeiture of life.

In order to bring the differences and similarities of the two systems into relief, the following illustration may be useful: -

Freedom of speech, Islam and Blasphemy

As the concept of state and its laws are different in Islam compared to west and other religions, similar is the case with freedom of speech.

The concept of freedom of speech came from the capitalist ideology and according to this ideology God and religion should be separated from life’s affair. According to this ideology individuals or human beings will define how to live their lives; freedom of individual, ownership, religion and speech are the foundation of capitalism. The limits of speech and right to speak both are defined by human beings.

This concept completely contradicts Islam. Muslims will follow the orders of the Creator of the human beings (Allah). Muslims will lead their life according to the teaching of Islam and Allah is the one who gave the right of speech to people and defined the limits on what is acceptable and unacceptable.

Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said “Whosoever believes in Allah and the last day, then let him speak good (khair) or remain silent.” Khair in this hadith means Islam or what Islam approved of.

According to Islamic law, speaking ill of Islam, its prophets and its holy scriptures (Quran and Hadith) comes in Blasphemy and Blasphemy is punishable by death.

Islam is a religion of peace. Muslims respect every religion, for Muslims Jesus Christ, Isaac (Ishaq) and Jacob (Yaqoob) are also as honorable as our Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم that’s why muslims never disrespect, mock or ridiculate them. But as Muslims respect all the prophets because it’s the part of Islam similarly we can’t tolerate if someone disgrace Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم because this is also the part of Islam.

Today there is virulent propaganda against Islam in the international media, in international newspapers and magazines, on radio broadcast stations and satellite TV channels. A section of the media is attacking Islam, and this has reached epidemic levels especially after eleventh of September, 2001.

It’s an open fact that in spite of all the negative propaganda in western media, Islam is the fastest growing religion, not just in the west but also across the world. Mocking and ridiculing our messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم can’t stop this. It cannot bring any harm to the grace of our Prophet but it always hurt the feelings of Muslims just because Muslims love him the most in this world and whenever our loved ones are disgraced, it’s beyond our tolerance.

Cousens wrote in the Progress Report of the Archaeological Survey of Sindh, 1897, "Upon the upper side of Sukkur, and joined to it at low water, is the compact little island upon which, under the cool shade of some large trees, is the famous shrine of Zinda or 'Zind' Pir. The island has been raised and protected against the corrosion of the river by retaining walls of strong rubble masonry all around. The great gateway facing Rohri is a far more imposing structure than the mean little domed shrine itself. The mud daub roof, supported on a wooden framework, is largely collapsed. The historic town of Shikarpur, founded in the 17th century, was once an important trading centre.

Due to its strategic location on the caravan routes of the 17th century, Shikarpur became the greatest commercial city in Sindh, Pakistan. Its merchants and bankers held commercial relations with all the principal markets of Central Asia, including Khorasan, Bukhara and Samarkand. Commercial cities of the Muslim world were known for their central covered bazaars and Shikarpur was no exception, its bazaar, lined with shops mostly run by Hindu merchants, ran through the centre of the old city, which is now much decayed.

The Persian ruler Nadir Shah (1688-1747) is said to have stayed in Shikarpur on his march through Sindh while returning from invading India in 1739. This photograph is from an album of 91 prints apparently compiled by P. J. Corbett, a PWD engineer involved in irrigation work at the famine relief camp at Shetpal Tank in 1897, and in canal construction in Sindh in the early 1900s.

Church of Holy Trinity

Completed in 1855, Holy Trinity was the first major church to be built in Karachi. Although it was designed by Captain John Hill, changes were made by John Brunton during its construction. The church is built in local, buff colour Gizri stone. This view of the exterior of the church shows the tower and roof in its original state. The tower has five storeys above the buttressed entranceway of the tower and the roof is pitched. Two stories of the tower were removed for safety in 1904 and a new barrel vaulted roof was was put in place in the 1970s.

Sindh encompasses the Lower Indus Basin with its delta, and is edged by the Arabian Sea on the south-west. The palla (tenualosa ilisha), a type of shad, is the most important variety of freshwater fish caught in Sindh. In February and March the fish ascend the Indus River in large numbers for spawning. The most common method of fishing for palla is to use a bag net attached to a long pole forked at the end. The limbs of the fork are about five feet in length and keep the net open as long as a double cord which runs along them is kept taut. The fisherman floats downstream on a chatty or earthen pot such as the ones seen in this view. His stomach forms a stopper over the mouth of the chatty while he is in the water. The fish are caught in the net then stabbed with an iron spike and placed into the chatty. The waters of the Indus provided rich fisheries, but in modern times these are under threat from over-fishing, abandoning of traditional methods, and reduction of freshwater by the increase of dams, barrages and reservoirs. Cousens wrote in 'The Antiquities of Sind' of 1890, "The brickwork...is very superior, the bricks, or, at least, those on the surface, being made of the best pottery clay, perfectly formed and dense, having cleanly-cut sharp edges, and of a rich dark red. The enamelled bricks are glazed, upon their outer surfaces, in light and dark blue and white...The coloured dadoes are an especially fine feature...A single design, without duplication, will sometimes cover several square yards of surface...Then, again, some tiles are as small as half an inch square, and over a hundred are used in a square foot, of mixed sizes, forming a perfect mosaic..."

Pakistan and India are not only two countries but they also represent two different religions and two different cultures. These strong differences are not negligible, because of these differences; Allama Iqbal’s had presented the Two Nation Theory in 1930 and was followed by Muhammad Ali Jinnah to the point of the creation of Pakistan. India was divided into two parts because of these differences only. Partition of India itself was a big “NO” from us (Pakistani’s) to Indian Culture.

No Place for Women in India

Mahatma Gandhi once said “Of all the evils for which man has made himself responsible, none is so degrading, so shocking, or so brutal as his abuse of the better half of humanity; to me, the female sex is not the weaker sex.”
According to Jawaharlal Nehru “You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women”.
In a recent survey, polling 370 gender specialists found India to be the worst place to be a woman among G20 countries, considering policies that promote gender equality, safeguards against violence and exploitation and access to healthcare.
Results of this survey were published in leading newspapers in the world last month and just after one month our TV screens showed us why India is the worst country to be a woman and how woman are treated in India.

A video was aired on Indian TV channels showing a gang of 18 men molesting a young 16 year old girl on the busiest street of Guwathi city in north-east India. A young girl left a bar after celebrating the birthday of her friend was attacked by a gang of 18 men. They dragged her on the road by her hair, tried to rip off her clothes while smiling at the camera that filmed this incident. She was abused for 45 minutes but no one even tried to help her. They were busy in capturing the video of assault with their mobile phones but no one called the police when the girl was begging for help.
This is not the first time that a girl is treated like this on the roads of India. Just after one week of Guwathi incident, similar kind of incident happened in Sewri-Mumbai. Where a 23 year old girls was attacked, abused and slapped by two boys in broad day light.

In a similar kind of incident a girl committed suicide after teasing and harassment by a boy just few days after the Guwathi incident. In Osmanabad- India, a girl set herself at fire and committed suicide after persistent harassment by a 22-year-old boy.

On the New Year eve of 2012, 20-25 drunken boys attacked a woman on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and molested her.

In May 2011, a teenage girl committed suicide under Rijor police station area, frustrated over teasing by two boys. According to Police Sources, Sikla (18) burnt herself to death as she was continously being teased by two boys when she went to fetch water in Nagla Pukhe village.
In May 2010, a girl was molested and beaten up by a mob in bright day light in Patna Bihar. The girl was striped, humiliated and paraded in cycle rickshaw on the crowded roads of Patna. The crowd was watching the show of woman humiliation but no one helped her.

In Jan 2009, around 40 people reportedly barged into a pub on Balmatta Road in Manglore and viciously attacked girls who were at the pub. At least two girls had been hospitalized.

In 2009 a girl was filmed throwing stones at the Army Jawan of India who tried to molest her.

On a New Year eve in 2008, two girls were molested by a mob of over 60 men. Two couples were taking walk at Juhu beach when a mob of 60 men attacked them, tore off their clothes, molested and abused them.
On New Year eve in 2007, a girl was attacked by a gang at Gateway of India. the girl was stripped and molested in the crowd.

There is no law in India against sexual assault or harassment. In case of molestation the culprit is charged under the cases of “insulting or outraging the modesty of a woman” or “intruding upon her privacy” and the punishment for these charges if proved is only 1 year maximum.
With population of 1.22 billion, India is the second most populous country in the world. 591.4 million population is female in India that is about 48.5% of total Indian population. According to UN Population Fund, India recorded 56,000 maternal deaths in 2010. According to International Center for Research on Woman, 44.5% girls in India get married before the age of 18. According to UNISEF, 52% of Indian women think that it’s justifiable for man to beat women.
Gulshan Rehman, health program development adviser, explained the conditions of woman in India more precisely. He said “In India, woman and girls continue to be sold as cattels, married off as young as 10, burned alive as a result of dowry-related disputes and young girls exploited and abused as domestic slave labor.”
The birth of a girl, according to a popular Hindu saying, is like the arrival of Lakshmi – the four-armed goddess of wealth, often depicted holding lotus flowers and an overflowing pot of gold.
But in reality being a girl in India is a continuous struggle against life. Her fight against life starts in the womb. “It’s a Girl” are the three deadliest words in India. India is among the top nations where girls are eliminated. In last three decades 12 million girls were aborted in India.
If by miracle or ignorance of the parents about the sex of the baby in the mother’s womb, a baby girl makes it to the world alive; she will be facing other life threatening dangers. Baby girls are killed or abandoned if not aborted as fetuses. Infant girls are killed through different methods. Girls are buried alive and they die because of suffocation. Some are strangled to death. In a trailer of documentary “It’s a girl”, most disturbing scene is one with an Indian woman who, unable to contain her laughter, confesses to having killed eight infant daughters.

Last month in Bangalore a father killed her baby girl. After the delivery when the father came to know that “It’s a girl”, he told her wife that ”for her wedding we will require a hundred thousand rupees (about US$1,800 dollars), if you can get that amount from your mother, then keep her, but if you can’t, then kill her.” After her wife’s refusal he killed the girl himself.

If by any means a girl in India, survives these first two stages of her life and makes to her childhood, the girl is more likely to be underweight and suffer stunting due to poor nourishment. Many will be lucky to survive beyond the age of five. After that she will be facing dangers of child abuse, rape, child marriages, dowry, honor killing, discrimination in health and education, domestic violence and human trafficking.
Recently an incident was reported by NDTV, of a seven year old girl adopted by her uncle and aunt, who could not have children of their own. The adopted mother accused her father for raping the little girl. The man was arrested, but just after two days the mother stabbed the girl to death and tried to kill herself. She said it was difficult for her to take the pressure, after the family harassed her for going to the police. In another case a 3 year old daughter was raped by her father in Bangalore. In Delhi a 15 year old girl was raped and beaten by her father for 2 years.
If a girl in India makes it to the age of marriage, dowry is the problem she will be facing for marriage. Dowry is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband in marriage. Many parents can’t pay the amount or can’t fulfill the demands of the groom’s family. Even the curse of dowry continues after marriage. According to National Crime Record Bureau, one bride was murdered every hour over dowry demands in 2010. Some are “stove burnings” where in-laws pour kerosene, the commonly-used cooking fuel of poorer homes; over women and set them alight, making it appear accidental.
After marriage, problems are even more worst for the woman. Just few days back a 20 year old married woman was tied to a tree, stripped, tortured, and head shaved by villagers on the orders of an Udaipur village caste panchayat “offended” by the “illicit” relationship.
In another report by The Indian Express, a mechanic has been arrested in Indore for keeping his wife’s genitals locked for four years. Sohanlal Chouhan, 38, drilled holes on the either sides of his wife’s genitals after drugging her, before going out for work every day, he would insert a small lock. The incident only came to light when the victim tried to commit suicide.
A country where female goddesses are worshiped, yet they fail to protect woman from such crimes. Brothers are supposed to protect sisters in rest of the world but in India, girls tie Raksha Bandhan or “safety ties” around their brother’s wrists as a symbol of their duty to protect them. Rightly said by Jawaharlal Nehru “You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women”.

Suneeta Marshall (born 1982) is a Pakistani model and television actress.

Early life

Marshall was born in Lahore, Pakistan to a Pakistani Christian family in 1982. She is a commerce graduate from St. Patrick's College (Karachi).

Career

She started her acting career with a telefim named "Tere bina". Marshall was introduced into the modeling world by her aunt. She made her first appearance in a Garnier Fructis commercial and other hair products such as Pantene, Head and Shoulders and Kuene.She was also in a drama tair-e-lahoti as Mahnoor in 2008.

Marshall returned as a model for Gul Ahmed. She worked with fashion designers such as Deepak Perwani, HSY, Bunto Kazmi and Nilofer Shahid.

Marshall was chosen by Bunto Kazmi to model her clothes in 2000 for a Milan fashion show and later modeled for Dior and Gucci.

She starred in Abra – Ul – Haq’s music video Preeto (Pretty) and in the music video for the Shehzad Roy song "Jana".

She appeared in the television movie called Tere Bina (without you) in which she played a young spoiled girl who elopes with her boyfriend and then later learns about the responsibilities of marriage, which was followed by a role in the television drama Malika in which she plays a Fashion Model/Actress who gets ahead of her friend in show business.

In November 2010, her two dramas Bahu Rani and Aey Ishq Hamain Barbad Na Ker are currently airing on ARY Digital. She starred in the serial Mere Naseeb Ki Barishein as Maha. The serial finished in September 2010.She has worked in Mera Saeen & is now currently starring in its sequel Mera Saeen 2 on Ary Digitial.

Personal life

Marshall married actor and model Hassan Ahmed in January 2009, in a Muslim Wedding ceremony. Three months later, they married in a Catholic Wedding ceremony Karachi (She is Christian and he is Muslim). In March 2011, she gave birth to their first child, a son, Raakin Ahmed.

Leaders and Pakistan (Imran Khan our HOPE)

We Pakistani’s are very unlucky in case of leadership. In last 65 years there were very few leaders who tried for the wellbeing of Pakistan. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is on the top of that list. According to a BBC poll in 2004, Jinnah is considered as South Asia's greatest-ever leader with the highest score of 39%, higher than Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose.

The historian, Stanley Wolpert, makes the following observation that succinctly describes the legacy of Jinnah and his footprint on history.

Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Muhammad Ali Jinnah did all three.

Luck didn’t favor us for long here. This great leader died just 1 year after the independence of Pakistan, at the time when we needed him the most because that was the time when we were working on the base of Pakistan. It is said that when the viceroy of India at that point of time, Lord Louis Mountbatten, learned of Jinnah's ailment he said 'had they known that Jinnah was about to die, they'd have postponed India's independence by a few months as he was being inflexible on Pakistan'.

After Jinnah military started intervening in the political matters and this went on till Pakistan found Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Bhutto started his political career in 1957 when he became the youngest member of Pakistan's delegation to the United Nations. He addressed the United Nations Sixth Committee on Aggression on 25 October 1957 and led Pakistan's delegation to the first United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1958. That same year, Bhutto became the youngest Pakistan cabinet minister, on appointment to the Ministry of Water and Power by President Field Marshal Ayub Khan.

Bhutto was noted for his progressive economic initiatives, industrialization, education, and foreign policy, and his intellectualism. In addition to national security issues, Bhutto promoted his policies on nationalization, health care, and social reforms. Under his premiership, Pakistan's Parliament gave approval and passed unanimously the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan, a supreme law that provides a parliamentary system to Pakistan, strengthened Sino-Pakistani and Saudi-Pakistani relations, recognized East-Pakistan as Bangladesh, and hosted the second Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in 1974 where he delegated and invited leaders from the Muslim world to Lahore, Punjab Province of Pakistan. In July 1972, Bhutto successfully preceded the Shimla treaty, signed with Indira Gandhi of India, brought 93,000 Prisoners of War back to Pakistan, and secured 5,000 sq. mi (13,000 km²) held by India. In 20 January 1972, weeks after the Indo-Pakistani 1971 winter war, Bhutto orchestrated, authorized, and administrated the scientific research on nuclear weapons; for this, he is colloquially known in the world as "Father of the Pakistan's nuclear deterrent program”. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was executed in 1979 after the Supreme Court of Pakistan controversially sentenced him to death by hanging for authorizing the murder of a political opponent.

After that there was a long pause although we saw leaders like Nawaz Sharif, Benazir Bhutto, Pervez Musharraf, Shoukat Aziz, Zafar Ullah Jamali, Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chaudhry Shujjat, Asif Ali Zardari etc. but no one was able to impress Pakistani nation as they were impressed by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Now Imran Khan is gaining popularity among Pakistani Nation as a leader. Imran Khan is considered Pakistan's most successful cricket captain, Khan played for the Pakistani cricket team from 1971 to 1992 and served as its captain intermittently throughout 1982–1992. After retiring from cricket at the end of the 1987 World Cup, in 1988 due to popular public demand he was requested to come back by the President of Pakistan to lead the team once again. At 39, Khan led his teammates to Pakistan's first and only World Cup victory in 1992.

In April 1996, Khan founded and became the chairman of a political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Through worldwide fundraising, he has also helped establish the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in 1996 and Mianwali's Namal College in 2008. He represented Mianwali as a member of the National Assembly from November 2002 to October 2007. But Khan’s party was not much popular in Pakistan. Many Political leaders considered him as a total failure in politics and is alive just because of the media coverage until 30 October 2011, Imran Khan changed the political picture of the country by addressing more than 100,000 supporters in Lahore challenging the policies of the current government, calling this new change a "tsunami" against the ruling parties, followed by another successful public gathering of 250,000 supporters in Karachi on 25 December 2011. Since then Imran Khan has become a real threat for the current ruling parties and future political prospect in Pakistan. According to International Republican Institute (IRI)'s survey, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) tops the list of popular parties in Pakistan both at the national as well as provincial level, leaving Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) behind.

Today Imran Khan is the new HOPE of Pakistani youth and they want to see him the next prime minister of Pakistan. Today he is the only leader of Political Party who is participating in every TV talk shows when he is invited and is answering every criticism made on him or his party where as leaders of other political parties are not that brave to do this. He is the only Leader of Political Party against whom there is no case of corruption, no scandal. Other parties tried their best to involve him in different scandals but he faced all those allegations and cleared them on media. One of his answer is very popular when Babar Ghauri of MQM asked him in a TV show that look at this picture this kid’s (Sita white’s daughter) face look like you. I don’t think we have any other choice in the upcoming elections other than Imran Khan. We already tried all the options but no one was able to deliver according to our wishes. Imran Khan and PTI is the only hope left behind. He is the only person with all his assets in Pakistan. He is the only person who will not leave this country. He is the only person talking about change in system of Pakistan and we need that change to save our Pakistan.

I have seen many people going from this position to the position in second last picture of Imran Khan. But its very rare that someone from that class will come to this level and that also only for the people of his country.

I never voted in elections for anyone in my life but this time i will vote for him. After watching this how can i vote for anyone else. Nadeem Yousafzai is another favorite of this corrupt Government. Nadeem Yousafzai was an ordinary Pilot during his career. This government made him MD Pakistan International Airlines on the merits of favoritism. He was on merit in the list of favorites of this government for the post of MD PIA.

Pakistan International Airline (PIA) was at the verge of destruction and facing serious financial crisis with an imminent cancelation of flight safety certificate by the European Union, Managing Director PIA, Captain Nadeem Khan Yousufzai was busy in setting new examples of favoritism by taking his blue-eyed airhostess Sadia Saeed Mughal to the flights which he has been operating himself. Sadia Saeed was considered as a favorite airhostess of the MD and usually she was not performing her duties on normal flights and remains available-off (standby) but she was getting all the flying allowances equal to the other colleagues.

When the employees of PIA started protests and stopped working then he was removed from the post of MD PIA. Later Nadeem Yousafzai was awarded with the post of DG Civil Aviation Authority.

Government brings their favorites on the key posts. Later the persons on these key posts will bring their favorites on the key posts with in the organization. MD PIA was Government’s favorite, Sadia Saeed was MD’s favorite now Allah knows who was Sadia Saeed’s favorite in PIA and this chain of favoritism will go on. In the chain of this favoritism Bhoja was also cleared and ban on Bhoja Airlines was lifted off, Bhoja Airlines was allowed to start its flights once again with the 30 years old planes already banned in many countries. Objections are also raised on the flying license of Bhoja pilot Noor ullah Afridi. Means pilot was also part of this favoritism and maybe he was favorite of Bhoja Airlines. The result of this favoritism chain is in front of us in the form of Bhoja Crash and loss of life of 126 citizens of Pakistan.

Now if there will be no merits for the posts like DG’s and MD’s in our government organizations, how can the system work properly. How can anyone expect that the organizations like PIA, PCB, Railway, WAPDA, HEC, NAB and FIA will improve its performance? If such posts will be awarded on favoritism then the results will be the same, downfall of our organizations, incidents like Bhoja crash. And an ordinary Pakistani will have to lose his job, his career and in many cases his life because of the favoritism policy of his government.

Derawar Fort - Cholistan (Part 01)

Derawar Fort is a large square fortress in Pakistan near Bahawalpur. The forty bastions of Derawar are visible for many miles in Cholistan Desert. The walls have a circumference of 1500 meters and stand up to thirty meters high.

The first fort on the site was built by Hindu Rajput, Rai Jajja Bhati of Jaisalmer. It remained in the hands of the royal family of Jaisalmer until captured and completely rebuilt by the nawabs of Bahawalpur in 1733. In 1747, the fort slipped from the hands of the Abbasis owing to Bahawal Khan's preoccupations at Shikarpur. Nawab Mubarak Khan took the stronghold back in 1804.

The nearby mosque was modelled after that in the Red Fort of Delhi. There is also a royal necropolis of the Abbasi family, which still owns the stronghold. The area is rich in archaeological artifacts associated with Ganweriwala, a vast but as-yet-unexcavated city of the Indus Valley Civilization.
