Before start designing it’s important for every designer to share a good design brief with their client to get the complete picture of the business that’s going to start.

A smartly designed ‘logo design questionnaire’ can make this job easy to get all the potential information about the business.

Being a professional designer, It’s important for me to take all the necessary information about the brand design, target market, demographic and brand reach. If you have solid information with you then it will be easy to make a stunning design.

Understanding brand ideology is also important for designers before starting a design. In this way, you will learn the complete set of attributes that the business reflects. In fact, it will help to analyze the brand personality to make an inspiring piece.

I’d like to share my best practice that varies with different clients. Many business owners are not good at providing information and they only share what they want. As a logo designer, my strategy to analyze competitors is to make a piece of design that makes it distinguished among competitors. And, it will not achieve without delving in a competitor brand.

3) Analyze Color Psychology

Yes, it important! for every brand to communicate with effective colors according to the nature of the brand.

Understanding to integrate graphic objects with true colors is the most important part to engage the target audience.

Basically, colors play a vital role to make a decision about the brand by its audience. It gives you a vibe to become a customer :-)

So for a logo designer, it’s important to know the exact meaning of the logo brand to enhance it with true colors.

Learning color psychology is an art especially when it comes to branding.

Speaking with the true colors related to a brand can make your brand successful and if you are targeting colors that are not overwhelmed by its audience then it will be a failure.

Colors give the vibe to interact. So sensibly using the right color for the brand can make it more powerful to penetrate the market.

There are many examples and case studies of brands that people love because of attractive design and justifying colors.

BLUE: Symbolize loyalty, peace, trust, and competence. One of the most adorable shade to create stunning logos.

ORANGE: One of the most used colors for brands. Clearly gives a message of being creative and enthusiastic. It gives a happy vibe so many creative and corporate organizations incorporate orange in their logo.

GREEN: Simple gives a vibe of being peaceful. Growing and healthy message communicates when you use green. Many health and fitness companies use green to represent their brand.

YELLOW: It brings vitality and warmth. Gives a sign of optimism! Many beverage and food companies incorporate yellow in their logo.

Many times it happens that you have something else in mind but the clients are thinking in another way so it’s a designer’s responsibility to tackle the design to deliver the best.

Sketching saves a lot of time and effort to create a perfect design digitally.

7) Make it Vector

Your logo needs to be vector means it will scaleup to a higher degree without losing pixels quality. According to contemporary standards, your logo needs to be a vector that can easily resize and scalable to infinity.

8) Empower With Minimalist Design

Simple and minimalist designs are overwhelming for the target audience as compared to the hard and intricating design. Try to be simple and concise to show your business identity to the target audience.

Minimalism doesn’t refer to the design will be boring and colorless. It only shows a simple and classy look in an eye-catching manner to connect the customer.

Take an example of Facebook, Twitter, and another big brand. All are simple and showing minimal designs to connect with people.

To create a perfect piece of minimalist design, you can simply play with typography and icon using one to two colors.

Make sure the design is absolutely ‘Unique’ and distinguishing among existing competitors. Never create a similar design version inspiring with the brand.

These days creativity is on the peak. You can play with the design concepts to make it simple and creative.

For this, many designers beautifully play with positive and negative spaces to display the concept that people love. Many designers on Dribbble showing their design main focus on the creative concepts.

Logo designing is not about just writing a beautiful font with the addition of an icon. It’s more about the designer creative thinking to wrap the typography and design in an artistic format that can significantly engage people.

Last year Spanish retailer ZARA rebrand the logo by playing with the spacing between the letters and it becomes a discussion on social media. Some designers think it shows over kerning to display the brand that makes it intricate for customers to recognize. While some designers take it positively and relate the over kerning to customer connection.

Creating Timeless is a beauty!

Many of the logos created in the 60’s and ’70s are still giving a fresh feeling to the customers.

A timeless logo design will not be affected with time and keep the brand young and dynamic for generations.

Many people think that retro and vintage are the best examples of being timeless but there are many other examples of a simple, minimalist, and playful logo that gives a timeless vibe.

CocaCola brand is one of the best examples of being timeless within the logo design category. Spencerian script makes the brand demanding for its audience and still as young as it was.

So after a lot of understanding to make a perfect brand for the audience, one thing still important and need the concern to make it engaging to connect the customer for the long term. Macdonald, Pizzahut, Tim Horton, Starbucks are such names that we find every day.

In this tutorial, first, we will create a leaf brush that will help to drag leaves around the tree. Simple quick and easy way to do using the brush. For this, we will create 2 types of brush one with stripe and other without stripe.

Let’s delve into it.

Format: AI 
Illustrator Version: CS6
Resolution: 300 PPI
Color Mode: CMYK

How to Make Leaf Brush and Vector Tree (Step by Step)

1. Open new file in Adobe illustrator.
2. Set the artboard.
3. Now create a background layer using the rectangle from the shape tool.
4. Used white-gray background color.
5. Press Ctrl 2 to lock the layer.

Make a Leaf Illustration:

1. Choose the ellipse tool from the shape section and drag a small oval on artboard.
2. Keep it black in color without a stroke.
3. Select the oval.
4. Now go to Pen tool and choose Convert ‘Anchor point tool’ option.
5. Click on both edges of the oval to make it pointed and sharp.
6. Now it will show the structure of leaf.
7. Take a copy of this and keep on the side.
8. Now using pen tool, create a curved stripe and keep it at the middle of first leaf at the bottom edge.
9. Select leaf and strip together and go to Window – Path Finder.
10. Select Subtract option. It will show the striped leaf structure.
11. Click on another leaf and make it longer and slim.
12. Now both leaves are ready to go to brush library.

Let’s Make Leaf Brush:

1. Now go to Window and choose Brush or Press F5 to open brush window.
2. Drag the first leaf in brush library to create Art Brush.
3. Check the settings from the video and click ok.
4. Use the same setting and create another brush.
5. Now remove leaf from artboard as it’s been added to brush library.

Let’s Make Tree Branches:

1. To make tree branches, select leaf without strip from the brush library and using the paintbrush tool with minimum stroker size draw random branches as showing in the video.
2. Now select all branches and go to Object – Expand Appearance.
3. Group all the layers.
4. Change the color to brown.

Let’s Draw the Leaves:

1. Pick the Brush option from the tool section.
2. Select striped leaf from brush library.
3. Properly set the stroke size to make the perfect leaf.
4. Now drag leaf on branches as showing in the video.
5. Pack the tree with striped leaf
6. Now repeat the same method and drag the nonstriped leaf on tree.
7. Make smaller, bigger and longer tree to create a complete tree structure.

Let’s Color the Leaves:

1. Now select each and everything together and go to Object – Expand Appearance.
2. Change the color by choosing the default gradient.
3. Open Gradient Window (press Ctrl F9)
4. Now add color shades of light green, yellow and dark green.
5. Select everything and use the blend option to make a smooth look of tree.
6. Now the tree is ready to save and import.

5 Key Points to Drag Perfect Leaves on Tree

It’s important to understand the hand formation while dragging your leaves on branches. Here I am sharing some key points based on my best practices.

1. Try to drag leaves with different stroke sizes.
2. Choose the best stroke size to place on the leaf.
3. Hand formation is important.
4. Drag in a straight line and with the curve to show different angling of leaf.
5. By using different hand angles, you can make a leaf with a different look that will make a realistic tree structure.

So guys, it’s is easy to make vector tree illustration in adobe illustrator. You can make your own tree within 5 minutes. If you are a beginner or making tree first time then try again and again to be the best.

Last week, my client has sent me a logo design brief to create a simple and minimalist logo design for their art and crafts startup in Miami. She was curious to have something with a modern and exotic look.

After reviewing the details, few concepts come in mind but this one clicks me to make a video tutorial for my lovely audience to share the overall logo process from start to finish in adobe illustrator.

How to Create Modern Logo – Start to Finish

So let’s get started and have a look step by step:

If you are a beginner and learning logo design or graphic designing then this tutorial might help you to note down the steps to create a minimalist and modern logo idea for your client and customers.

Modern Logo Tutorial Step by Step Video

1. Open Adobe Illustrator
2. Got to file, to create New file
3. Now fill-up details. (Document Name, No of the artboard, Size, Orientation, Printing mode & Resolution).
4. Press Ok.
5. Now the window will open with the artboard.
6. Create a background layer with a white-gray color.
7. Press Ctrl 2 to lock the layer. In this way, the background will be fixed and not move during work.

Create Roughen Ellipse

1. From the Shape tool, pick and Elipse.
2. Drag an Elipse on the artboard.
3. Now Roughen the Elipse going to Effect – Transform – Roughen
4. Details will be 1 inch with smooth option & option setting will set on a relative with 2%.
5. Press Ok and check the ellipse turned to rough shape.
6. Select the ellipse and go to object and Expand Appearance.
7. Again go to Object and choose Expand option.
8. Next go to Object again, choose path – offset path.
9. Set the offset to 11 px and click ok.
10. Now repeat the same step and create another ellipse.
11. I have created 3 consecutive ellipses connected together.
12. Now go to shape tool, and choose Rectangle.
13. Drag a rectangle on the right and middle side of ellipses.
14. Select everything together and click on the Shape Builder tool and drag it on a rectangle shape.
15. Deselect and remove the rectangle.
16. Now the circle will show a cut mark from the right side.

How to Create a Leaf Pattern:

1. To create leaves, go to shape tool and click on the ellipse tool and drag a long oval.
2. Click on an oval, go to Pen tool and choose convert Anchor Point option.
3. Now click on both the edges of the oval to make a sharp-pointed edge to show like a leaf.
4. Next is to drag the leaf into the brushes library.
5. For this go to Window – Brushes
6. Drag the leaf into the brush library to create an art brush.
7. Apply setting and press Ok.
8. Now choose the brush tool from the toolbar and drag leaves on the edge of the ellipse as showing in the video.
9. Make sure to set the stroke level of leaves to create a perfect leaf structure.
10. Apply leaves on both the edges of the ellipse.
11. Select each and everything together and go to Object Expand Appearance.
12. Change the color of leaves to match with the main ellipses.

Write Logo Text

1. Write the text using the text tool. Adjust the text accordingly.
2. Adjust details in the logo and it’s ready.
3. Watch the video tutorial to follow the quick steps.

So now let’s get started with the design process step by step:

1) Tools and Software to Design Logo?

There are so many design tools in the market that you can use to design a logo but there is some standard software that you can use to design vector logos. Adobe Illustrator is the best and most recommended software for logo design. It allows you to create a professional vector logo.

You can easily download the 30 days trial version of adobe illustrator from the Adobe website.

There is also some free logo maker software in the market but I recommend you use the professional design software to create your own design.

2) Start With Logo Questionnaire (Design Brief)

Next is the logo design questionnaire (design brief) that will help to create a perfect logo. As you are doing your logo yourself so ask write a note on paper to list the logo specification.

Like;

• business name,
• tagline,
• design type (feminine, masculine or semi).
• Nature (simple, cool, playful, colored, gradient, etc)
• Icon addition
• font
• color preference
• Target audience
• Demographics

Here is my logo design questionnaire that I normally use to share with my client. You may have a look at it.

3) Make a Rough Sketch

Yes, it’s important to design a rough sketch on paper or a notebook. You don’t need to be an artist for designing. Try to incorporate your design thoughts on paper. It will give you a clear direction to create your design especially if you want something iconic.

Brainstorming is also important!

Use a pencil and draw your concept in different ways.

Try multiple ideas and select 2 or 3 or create the digital file.

4) Scan the Sketch and Import to Graphic Software

Now you can simply scan your design and import to design software.

For this, open Adobe Illustrator.

Create a new file.

Open the scan file.

Press Control 2 to lock the file.

5) Draw the Design

Now the next part is to draw the design. For this you will use the Pen tool for drawing.

Now click on the Pen tool on start design. (try to practice if you are using the first time).

Draw your design.

Add the font and you will get your logo.

6) Save a File with Recommended Logo File Formats

It’s an important part of getting and exporting your design. In my 10 years of design experience, I have met with many business owners who don’t have logo files with them. Somebody missed or someone didn’t ask the designer to send HD logo files with essential file formats.

Here are logo file formats that you need to have a copy of your design.

• AI file (Illustrator file)
• EPS file (Vector file)
• SVG
• JPG
• PNG (transparent)

Step by Step Video Tutorials to Design your Own Logo

1. Open Adobe Illustrator
2. Got to file, to create New file
3. Now fill-up details. (Document Name, No of artboard, Size, Orientation, Printing mode & Resolution).
4. Press Ok.
5. Now the window will open with artboard.
6. Take the text layer from the toolbar.
7. To keep it simple and understandable, I am creating the Signature Style logo.
8. Write the Name of business with desire font. (Here I used Stea font).
9. Click on the name layer and convert to outline.
10. Now using the gradient option, change the color of the font. (I used golden).
11. In the same way, write the tagline or type of business.
12. Now click on rectangular shape in the toolbar and pick the rectangle tool to create the background of logo.
13. Drag a rectangle and change the color to black.
14. Now create a small rectangle using the same rectangle tool.
15. Go to object, choose path – offset path.
16. Change the offset to 5 px and click ok.
17. Now select both the rectangle layers.
18. Go to Window, select pathfinder.
19. Click on the extract option.
20. It will convert the rectangle to a thin border.
21. Now place the thin border to align with the business name and tagline.
22. You can create the same thing with little addition in a circular format.

In my last post, I discussed making a good logo that should be simple and minimalist, memorable, engaging, competitive and timeless. These are basic attributes or you might call characteristics that a good logo design should have. Regarding the step by step logo design process to include these attributes is a brainstorming job that needs commitment, dedication, and experience to create a perfect logo that can attract the target market with strong call of action.

Let’s delve into it and make it simple so the beginners can easily understand and learn the process to create a professional logo with ease and convenience.

1) Get Logo Details – Logo Design Specifications

The very first step is to gather the design details that can help you to create potential design matched with client/customer requirements.

For, we have to ask some concrete questions from the client to create a masterpiece. This is compulsory to get a design brief before starting a design.

Many times, I saw the new designer just take the business name, tagline, color requirements and start making the logo and in the end client doesn’t like it so it’s a waste of time, effort and money.

So, it’s a good idea before starting design you must collect related information about the brand. In this way, it will be a two-way communication process and the client will directly involve with the designer during the process.

To ease this process, I have created a logo design questionnaire that helps me to collect details. And, I noticed the client get comfortable with this step and fill the questionnaire to share details.

On a personal note, when I shared this logo questionnaire on the Youtube tutorial, many new designers ask me why are you getting so many details as it’s a waste of time.

No, it’s not!! In fact, It will help you to save your time and effort to create the right design for your clients and customers.

So what are the Main Questions that you should ask to get the design brief:

1. Ask about the logo theme or brand vibe. (Masculine, feminine, semi masculine)
2. What should be the logotype? (Lettering, abstract, vintage, mascot, emblem, monogram)
3. Attributes of business that logo should reflect
4. Detail about the brand scope, brand age, and brand demographics.
5. Color Preferences
6. What message the logo will convey to the target audience?

Above are the few questions, that will help you to understand the design model.

2) Brand Research

After getting brand details, now it’s recommended to do brand research like how the brand stands in the market. How a successful competitor is operating? and the interest of the market audience towards the brand. This information is important to create a perfect logo design.

Take Time For Substantial Brand Research

To create an impactful brand, you have to indulge your insights to translate a model that communicates target market interest, give it a sustainable market position and stands out among competitors.

All this happens, if you take time for substantial brand research based on qualitative and quantitative market analysis.

It means you have to understand the brand voice, brand theme, and brand psychology in terms of colors and typography.

Let me give an example if you have to create a brand logo for a fast-food pizza company, so the first model that you get is the Pizza hut but here you have to make a research about your brand like;

• is it a global brand?
• how it’s different from other brands?
• about the demographics of the target market,
• and the suitable age of customers.

All this information should incorporate into the logo design. Also, make sure to know about

Another step after gathering all the related details is ‘modeling’.

Here you will sketch your model to give it a design form.

Every designer thinks about a unique concept then sketch it on paper by giving different ideas. It’s a great way to create innovation in design by adding variation in ideas and concepts. Sketching is one of the best techniques to create unique concepts. So if you are a beginner and looking forward to starting logo designing as business then sketch your concepts on paper then draft it on software. It’s a simple, easy and quick way to design.

On a personal note, when I started logo designing I was used to designing directly using the software and always feels incomplete because I was not fully drafting my concept as I wanted. Once I start drafting concepts on paper, It was a mind-blowing experience as I never thought it would add so much creativity and innovation in my design. So it’s a recommendation for new designers to start by sketching the concept. You will notice a big difference in your designing experience.

4) Create Vector Design Using Graphic Software

Once you have done the sketching part then scan the best concept that you want to make in the shape of the final logo. Here you can use graphical software.

In graphical software for logo design, I prefer Adobe Illustrator as it creates a vector design.

And, the pen tool is a great asset here as it gives you the freedom to draw your concept in digital format.

You can digitize your concept here in different ways by adding colors and some other embellishments to create a perfect logo.

5) Design Selection/Revision

Logo design selection is an important part, as you send the design mockups to your client then the client will choose a specific design and ask for revisions if it’s required.

Many designers get critical if the client asks for lot of changes but believe me this is the great way to make a perfect piece.

The best idea is to collect feedback about the design and talk with the client like how do you want changes. What are the areas that need to fix? So after getting the update, you can fix the design accordingly and send it your client.

This is my personal practice that I am sharing and it works for me to design the logo by saving time.

6) Final Execution

Yes, now the final execution phase comes up where you will create a final mockup of design logos. Here you will create all the logo files required by client.

The logo should be web and print friendly so you have to create files compatible with print and web.

For web compatible logo files,  it should be:

• RGB
• 72 PPI

Recommended file formats:

• PNG (Transparent)
• JPG

For print compatible logo files, it must be:

• CMYK (Recommended for professional printing)
• The resolution must be around 300 PPI
• Make sure all layers are vector

Recommended file formats:

• AI
• EPS
• SVG
• PDF

Now the last phase is the delivery. Here you can create a license based on your terms and policies to deliver the logo. You will deliver logo with the complete logo kit that will include:
