Traveling by metro, not a great idea folks. The nearest metro station is Shadipur. You'll have to take an auto or a bus, and then head towards Naraina Village or near Brar Square.

You can reach the cemetery by using any mode you can, in our case, a car. We parked our car, in front of Brar Square railway station and then scaled our way to the cemetery over the hills and endless grounds. You can also take the easy, but the longer way by crossing over the railway crossing and taking the well-paved road to the cemetery.

Parking is not allowed in the periphery of the cemetery.
What?

This cemetery is memorial of the Commonwealth soldiers, who sacrificed their lives during the Second World War. Later(1966-1999), the First World War burials were also moved here from Kashmir Gate, Delhi, so that they could have a permanent abode.
This cemetery inhibits more than 25,000 memorials of the servicemen who died during the war.

The cemetery is open from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. On weekends, the front gate is closed, but you can get via the side-gate, talking your way in.

Our Experience

Its a beautiful place, complete with the lush green grass, and well-laid flowers. We felt honored standing admits such great fighters and patriots. Servicemen, as young as 24, died serving for their country, doing their duty. They inspired us to be strong and firm in our advent to our goals.
It is a very serene and a quite place, and makes the brain go all calm and peaceful.

Now, for the rugged types, while scaling the lands, we found an amazing hillock. This is one sweet place, to spend a cool breezy evening, with your friends. Or, fulfilling you're heart's earnest desires!!

Hauz-i-Shamshi is a water reservoir that was built by Iltumish in 1230 AD. That was the time when the new capital of Iltumish had scanty water resources. The story behind constructing a reservoir at this location is rather interesting.

view of the shamshi talab

It is said that prophet mohammed appeared in Iltumish's dream riding on a magical flying horse (buraq). The buraq hit the ground with its hoof and a water spring bursted. He then instructed him to build a reservoir at this location. Next day when Iltumish visited the location, he found hoof-print of the magical horse inscribed on a stone there!! Later when the construction began, the spring source was unearthed there and water started sprinkling out!!!

Another legend has it that a sufi saint named khwaja had a similar dream about the same location!!

There was a dome constructed at the center of the reservoir to mark the exact location that appeared in Iltumish's dream and hoof-print of the horse that was inscribed on the stone was planted...

Earlier this dome was in the middle of the reservoir and could be approached only by a boat. Now the reservoir has shrink-ed and it has approached the east end. A foot bridge is also constructed now to reach the dome (but never opened *laughs*). Even the stone which had hoof-print has been changed...

To be frank, this place is no hangout... It is a victim of mismanagement and has become garbage dump over the years... The historical significance and supernatural tales about it were just not enough to keep it respected forever..

We have included this place just for the sake of history it carries, but this is NOT a hangout for sure. SAD.

You'll need to use the roads around the Shamshi Talab to arrive at Jahaz Mahal.

What?

Jahaz means a ship and mahal means a palace. It gets its name from the illusion that is created in the lake waters surrounding it. It makes it look like a floating palace and hence, ship-palace. This was built by lodi dynasty between 1452–1526. The mahal was built almost 200 years after the reservoir but completely gels in with the surroundings.

It is a 700 meters walk from Jahaz Mahal and the path is confusing!! You'll have to keep a sense of direction in the narrow curved streets and keep asking shopkeepers for the route. There are many roads that lead to this place and hence it gets confusing to match the directions from two different people. What?
Zaffar Mahal is a summer palace that was built by Akbar Shah II in 18th century. Then it was called Lal Mahal or Rang Mahal. Later, Bahadur Shah Zafar II renovated it (primarily the entrance now called Hathi [elephant] Gate) and it was renamed to Zaffar Mahal.
There is a lot of ambiguity in the information available about this mahal. Citing an article from www.monumentsofdelhi.com ,

"History tells us that this monument was built by Akbar Shah II in 1842. However, Akbar Shah II ruled from Delhi between 1806-1837. However, the stone at Zafar Mahal, installed by the ASI says that Bahadur Shah II ruled from 1847 to 1857, which means, till 1847, Akbar Shah II was the ruler of Delhi (whereas, he died in 1837)."

This place is great for photography and hanging out. But it is advised to stay off the collapsible roofs !! The structure is one of the last to be built by mughals, yet is the first one to collapse !! Take help of the guards present on the site to guide you and keep you off the risky spots...
Gandhak ki Baoli (Gandhak's step-well)

Where?
Gandhak-ki-baoli is an ancient step well located close to the Mehrauli bus depot. We suggest you visit this place after Zaffar mahal as the route from there is less "twisted" *laugh*

WARNING : "Gandhak-ki-baoli" is not listed on Google Maps and even after hours of search we could not make out it's exact location as it is surrounded by taller buildings (too many of them!!)

The locals happen to know this place very well and they will help you with the directions more than a google map can!! So to visit this place, you'll have to be on your own...*laugh*

What?
"Gandh" in hindi means a "smell". This baoli derives its name from it because of the smell of sulphur that it's water had... But now the only smell that lasts is from the near-by dhabas. We visited this step well in July and damn it had water..!! Local kids were splashing in it and some of them jumped from around 30 feet !! The water is dirty but it didn't matter to kids who were enjoying it. It is a 13th century structure. It has 5 tiers and 4 levels.. We even saw folks diving from top-most point of the structure !!

Earlier it was reffered to as diving-well by the residents. Locals told us that water had accumulated in this baoli after many years. It had been dried out since last 5 - 10 years or so. We were lucky to find water there... Basically team DUD is really lucky !! *laughs*
North Campus is not just a place where all guys croon to go,or a place that is swamped with the tastiest of the street food,or a haven for all the girls living their life on shopping. It has a very historical significance and a most neglected aura and grace.

Kamla Nehru Ridge, is a small part of the ridge that is a northern extension of the ancient Aravalli Range, some 1500 million years old. Its a "mini-forest", swarmed now by daily-joggers and fitness freaks from who come to jog walk and exercise and play around in nature's lap. But little do they know, that the paths they are walking on , the buildings in whose shade they sweat their bodies out, were once trodden by the mutinous Britishers and was even a hunting place for the kings. It holds innumerable evidences of the freedom struggle lead from Delhi.

What ?

Ajeetgarh or mutiny memorial was build by the Britishers in the later 80's to pay homage to the soldiers and martyrs who died during the carnage in Delhi. It has an octagonal perimeter surrounding by iron-clad grills and towering trees. The structure resembles the christian architecture or more, the Gothic architecture. Its a treat for architecture lovers. The walls of the structure has marble plaques which have the details and accounts of the men that lost their life during the resistance. The plaques are inscribed in Hindi, English and Urdu too. They bear the exact number of lives that were claimed, which are categorically distinguished into "natives" and "europeans", which shows the anarchy, and the discrimination under the British rule.

Munity Memorial (Ajeetghar) structure

This place is built on a two-tier base, and overlooks almost whole of the ridge. The view from the top is mesmerising!! The memorial is looked after by 2 guards(who were polite, for a change). The interior of the memorial is out of bounds,as incidents of suicide and other malicious incidents were reported. So if you think you can go up those winding stairs to the topmost point and shout out to the Almighty, standing right on the sky, then you are in for disastrous heartbreak !!!!

What?

Ohhh right! Now this is own OLD man here! This pillar is similar to the one at Qutub Minar. It dates back to 3 centuary B.C., and was installed by Ashoka himself. The script is inscribed in Brahami language and written Prakrit language It was brought to Delhi from meerut by Feroz Shah Tughlak. The history is engraved on a huge stone tablet besides the pillar. The pillar was broken into five pieces by an explosion of gun powder and was reinstated over the time.
What?

Pir-Ghaib is primarily the remains of kushk-i-shikar. But it got its current name due to an interesting story. Pir means a saint, and ghaib (gayab) means to disappear. A saint disappeared from here mysteriously and hence a cenotaph was erected by his followers. But interestingly, the orientation of this makbara(grave) is east-west while Muslim graves are built north-south!!

Very long ago this monument was also used for hunting. Once you visit the place, you'll be amazed by the fact that you can see all of the northern ridge from here... Every other natural structure (except modern buildings and the water tank) is lower than this and you can clearly take aim at anything!!

CHAUBURJA

Where?

It rests in the main park of the Kamla Nehru Ridge, quite decently visible from the main road itself

What?
Lazing around the forest, residing right in the heart of the Ridge,is Chauburja or Chauburja Masjid. Chauburja comes from, "Chau" meaning four, and "burj" meaning towers or pillars. Chauburja is christened so because of its four-domed corner turrets that gaze upon you. It is a two-storey building built by Feroz Shah Tughlak during his reign. This monument is one of its kind, with rubble masonary , a large central chamber, with symmetrically lined pillars and rooms, and very well laid stairs leading to the second storey.
It is believed, that the British forces took refuge of the mosque during the Delhi seige!!

This places gives you that war-like aura. Imagine the British command, full in their red and black robes, hiding and taking shelter amongst the rooms that you see, lying on the same floor where your foot is, too timid to face US!! Makes your chest pump up with pride and robustness :)
Just walk along the path highlighted in the pic and you'll reach the location in 10 - 15 minutes. It is a huge rectangular structure with a giant well on one of the ends.

Ugrasen ki baoli (or Agrasen ki baoli) is a 60 meter long and 15 meter wide step well that is claimed to be built in Mahabharat epic era !! It is believed to be built by legendary raja Agrasen and was later rebuilt in 14th century by the Agrawal community which have original links to Maharaja Agrasen. Despite being in Connought Place and carrying the weight of grand Indian history on its shoulders, this place hardly sees any visitors.

click on pic to enlarge

It is a three tier structure and the well is now dried up. However as you walk down, last 5 - 10 steps and surrounding walls show traces of rain water that fills up there every monsoon. The structure is firm and has no major collapse. The corridors are wide and you can easily walk on them. It is a great place and can be explored in 30 - 45 minutes. Walking on the stairs is a bit difficult as the flight of steps is quite higher than what we encounter in modern buildings. No doubt our fore-fathers were stronger *laugh*. This place is under the Archaeological Survey of India however no evident restoration has been done. (Which is great. They don't how to handle 14th century structures)

Refer to Wikipedia article : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agrasen_ki_Baoli

Sid, Mahi and i found this place to be a ten on ten hangout. It is close to CP, well connected via public transit, has a great feel and really fun to explore. Whether it is running madly on the corridor or climbing the roofs or navigating narrow staircases to reac the top of the well, it all has great fun. We had a great time at this place and plan to visit it more frequently now, maybe everytime we go to CP !!

I also take this opportunity to share with you people a video, that I think shows Dilli (unlike delhi). Enjoy *smiles*

Just by crossing the Press Enclave road you can reach the Khirki Masjid (Mosque of Windows). This masjid was build between 1351 - 1354 [14th century] in tughlaq dynasty.

Click on pic to enlarge

To reach here you just need to start walking left from the Press Enclave road along the arrow shown in pic.
There is no good path that leads to it but you'll find a small mud road that you can take to reach there.

Once you have spent some time at the khirki masjid, you may walk a little further on the Press Enclave road (around 400 meters) to reach another monument called "Satpula dam (or weir)" [The bridge of seven openings]

Just walk as marked by the arrow in pic and you'll reach the place with ease.

Now that you how to get everywhere, you can know what it is all about.

What ?

Khirki Masjid

This mosque is not under use now and is abandoned. Archaeological survey of India has undertaken the restoration work here but apart from a few ceilings, no major changes have been made to the structure. Which is a bonus. The architecture is beautiful and it is a great place for photo-shoots as well. The structure is vast and has array of hundreds of pillars which align so orderly that is becomes a treat to watch. It is a quad-symmetric structure. Any feature of this mosque is repeated at each corner (read each of the directions). The entrance at east direction has stairs that lead to the roof top. Even in the summer heat we found to be windy and calm. it just soothes your senses. It is a brilliant place to spend time and be at peace. The view around is so contrasting. Here you stand on a 14th century structure, looking at the biggest mall of Delhi right in front of you!! It's so sarcastic. Many houses have come around and engulfed the whole structure. but it's legacy can still amaze you...

Satpula Dam

This was a dam built around 1343 to aid irrigation facilities and provide a defense from enemy armies. This is really a huge structure. Even after six centuries of wear and tear, it doesn't show any signs of fatigue. There is no massive collapse or damage in the structure. It has three levels and exploring each level has a different fun. Apart from being a dam, this was also used for defense from enemies. You can notice tall towers on both banks which give you a feel of being watched. If you get down to the plain ground in front of the structure, you can see the seven openings that once functioned as the gates of the dam to let water out. This is a great hangout place and if you take a few friends along, you can have greatest fun !!

Our experience at both the locations was exhilarating. Sid, Mahi (a beautiful girl who wished to step out of her pop's castle) and I had most peaceful outing of our lifetimes. The monuments take you to a different era and a different time and make you feel how firm our history is. We all had known saket only for the Citywalk mall and we never expected a large chuck of Indian history to be breathing so close to us. It is so close to all the modern buildings nearby, yet so far. We had been to the mall numerous times just to window shop and then eat burgers, but these structures never got the respect they deserve...

"Had these ruins been speaking, they would have told us what we have done to us"

Hauz Khas, known only because of the presence of THE IIT(iit-d) in its vicinity, has a couple of places that actually make it worth covering. The "heart and mind"-catching spots that were treaded on were namely, Hauz Khas Park alias Deer Park (plus the ducks, rabbits & the lake!!) and The Hauz Khas Fort !!

If you are commuting by metro, deboard at Green Park metro station(ironically near to hauz khas fort and the park) and take and auto(charges=Rs.30).

If you are commuting by your own private drive, then follow the road from aims to green park metro station and head for the hauz khas village.

The main entry of the Deer Park is the one everyone ideally should start with. It is just adjacent to the deeply-rooted hauz khas village which is etched with all the designer showrooms and multi-cuisine resteraunts!

Walk through the heavily scaped park with the richest of the flora and fauna. Then trek on the Hauz Khas fort , digging your way through time and witnessing the architectural marvels!! The most elegant creations of that age, put up in the simplest and the most basic rocks and cement! These places are for sure a heaven for the nature-lovers and people in lookout for a serene and a calm abode.

Now that you know how to get everywhere, you can know what it is all about. *smiles*

What ?

The Hauz Khas Park( Deer Park..With REAL deer, hundreds of them in their most natural habitat!)

Spanning over 50 acres, this park is one of the most well-kept natural hideaways, set apart from the busy and smoky-life of today! The most ideal place to come with your coupe of friends, leaving behind your day to day hustle-bustle, and coming for a li'll peace of mind and soul. Take your mats(chatai, in local words),eatables , drinkables and whatever you want to and breathe in life. Sports enthusiasts can have a great time too by taking all their gear and stuff here. This park caters to the interests of all kinds of people. There are these huge aged monuments and tombs, which Shivam and I had a great time investigating and exploring. Also, one cannot miss the fauna here. The cute little rabbits feeding on their food, as tame as they could be, the deers lazing around , bearing the same heat together in their mob.

Another feat for the eyes is the,"brobdingnagian" lake. Yes!! The adjective says it all! Huge, Mysterious, a real spectacle!! Dark green with the all the underwater growth, this lake is a major attraction. Everything is just in its place, from the numerous trees shadowing its perimeters, ducks wading across to the island in the middle, to the cool light breeze blowing your hair.

The Hauz Khas Fort

Shivam and me had one of the most memorable times excavating thorough this historical setup. Go there any day you want to,any time, the ambiance the aura of this fort remains as mystical as ever. The elegantly carved living place, the old college(called "MADRASA") for the students of that age!! Eyes open to the most beautiful view of the magnificent lake. Chilling there with friends, eating samasos, having coldrinks, looking upon the land where the Kings of the Kings, ruled fought and spent their lifes, gives a sense of pleasure and contentedness that can be found nowhere!!

Words fall short while describing this occult place!! GO CHECK IT OUT !! :)

Shivam and me, along with nimit(our guest for the day) had a great time walking admist the wildest and the craziest spread of flora and fauna. Treaking along the path and wilderness , we dwelt on our thoughts, our life and our talks flowed endlessly. The aura of the place was so serene, so pure that we felt calm and our mind was at ease. Shivam and me, sharing the common interests of the archaeological genre, had the most memorable with the long-built monuments.

Once you have explored and enjoyed the Jumbo Point [that is, you have seen no less than 15 planes take off] you cant walk on the railway tracks, pose and click pictures, wave a good-bye to trains passing by, etc. But the cool part is reaching THE abandoned building!!

Just walk on the tracks till you reach the ruins of whatever remains of a building.

WHAT ?

T3's Jumbo Point [Plane watching point. See Rang De Basanti for more details *laugh*]
An awesome place to watch planes take off right over you. Go there with friends, park your cars close to the boundary, play music, and shout at planes flying over you. You can even peep through the space between the boundary walls to see planes landing from other side. Position yourselves right in front of the runway (not angular) so that you can see the fire in the jet engines of the planes. Even in morning glare, they looked so bright!! It's a total masti joint and best part, we didn't spot any cops there!

Evenings would be the best time to visit. The frequency of planes is good. We had a plane flying off every 10 minutes or so. Do NOT go there in afternoon in summers else you would bake yourself.

click on pic to enlarge

Railway Tracks
Sid and me had some fun with the trains passing by. And we also pulled some videos. We scared the driver [yes the driver of the drain] who though we were there to commit suicide and hence kept honking. *laugh*
Walk on the tracks only if it is silent. It happened to us once that Sid and me were walking and the train was running on adjoining track so silently that we didn't notice it coming until it passed us! So it might prove dangerous. So please take care while walking on tracks. Do reach the dead end of the track. There is painted on a red plank "DEAD END" Make some really cool poses and click pics.

THE Abandoned building
This was the most awesome discovery Sid an i could make. "G-7 1902" This structure was made in 1902. And trust me the construction method used is of that time. Rock blocks are glued together and the roof is made of stone planks! Nothing like you see these days.

click on pic to enlarge

It is abandoned now. And it is in ruins, half-collapsed. It stood there for 110 years and it needed to retire. We got atop it, clicked pics and made poses. If you there with friends, park your car nearby, take bear cans and climb its roof on fine evening, you did definitely have a gala time!!

OUR EXPERIENCE

The area is awesome if you happen to be an explorer. If you are sophisticated types who wouldn't like to get his/her feet dirty in mud, don't go. If you happen to have a hard-core group of friends, then you'll surely have fun. Evening would be the best time to visit this area. Planes and runway will have lights on and the atmosphere will be cool.

On the way, there are thorns all over. Make sure you have good shoes on. You may find a couple of dry wells on the way. Make sure you stay by and peep in! Carry cola, beer and lots of water. Spend 4-5 hours there and have fun with your friends. This is really a relaxing hang out.

All the best for your trip. *Smiles*
