When the apostle Paul traveled to new cities to share the message of Jesus, he was much more than a speaker. As an authentic follower of Jesus Christ, he sought to both teach and live the hope that was within him.

Now, 2,000 years later, those who examine the life of Paul often concentrate much more on his talk than his walk. Yet the two are…

Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:“‘Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored. ’” -Leviticus 10:1-3

We tend to think of God as a friend. He’s a buddy we hang out with or turn to in times of trouble. But God is much more than our sidekick; he is Lord.

When Aaron’s sons treated God’s ways like a suggestion and decided on their own option, they died. They did not sit in the corner or get put in time out or get grounded. Moses said it was a matter of holiness, or what we could call God’s honor.

God made us; we didn’t make him. He calls the shots; we don’t. When we turn to any type of role reversal in our relationship with God, it will end badly. We may not die instantly like Aaron’s sons, but we’ll regret how we treated God.

Rather than looking back sometime in the future with guilt, let’s pursue God’s honor here and now. The lesson of Leviticus is that God’s holiness is of infinitely more importance than the latest cell phone or celebrity gossip. We were created to worship him. Let’s start now.

Christians are called to do good. This is obvious. What is not as obvious is how to go about it. Paul offers three powerful insights in Galatians 6:9-10 for our journey. First, we are to “not become weary.” Why? We reap a harvest…

“Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people.” -Leviticus 9:23

People who spend time in God’s presence are those who serve as a blessing to others. When you look at Facebook or talk to people in your community, much of the talk centers on the negative–the rain, who made you mad, how you didn’t get enough sleep or don’t have enough money. But occasionally we run into people who seem to come from another planet and speak words of thanksgiving and blessing.

What’s the difference? Usually you find these people are spending significant time with God. As a result, their news is an overflow of a heart in love with their Creator.

The answer to blessing others is not in doing more, but in being more–more alive to the presence of God. When we dwell with him, his light shines in all of our actions. We can then truly serve as a blessing to others.

“And Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord commanded by Moses.” -Leviticus 8:36

Aaron and his sons were chosen by God to serve as priests. But there was a human element involved as well. They had to “complete the training.”

“Complete the training” was what Yoda criticized Luke for not doing in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke knew something bad was going down with his friends and decided to take on Darth Vader while only half-prepared. It didn’t turn out to well. He lost the battle, lost his hand, nearly died, and discovered Vader was his daddy. Maybe he should have listened to Yoda and completed his training.

God has called us to serve him in unique and powerful ways. Unfortunately, we often like to take off in a direction of our own that is outside of his plan for our lives. When we do, we run into problems. When Aaron decided to build a golden calf for the people to worship instead of leading people to worship the true God, the fallout was severe. When he followed God’s called and “did all the things that the Lord commanded by Moses,” his life pleased the Lord and he made a positive impact in the lives of others.

We are called by God. Let’s obey him and follow through to complete his calling for our lives.

“This is the law of the burnt offering, of the grain offering, of the sin offering, of the guilt offering, of the ordination offering, and of the peace offering, which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day that he commanded the people of Israel to bring their offerings to the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai.” -Leviticus 7:37-38

Giving is not optional for those who follow God; it is essential. Leviticus 7 is a clear example of this principle. After giving several chapters of instructions about various offerings, the chapter ends on the note that this is what God commanded when Moses was on Mount Sinai. This was not about preference or publicity, but about holiness and obedience.

For generations, such offerings were used to come before God. With the coming of God to us in the life of Jesus Christ, we are no longer commanded to offer ongoing offerings. Instead, he became our offering and our substitute. We now offer our lives as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.

As Christians, we give our lives in devotion to God. It is not about money, but about every area of life. We give of our finances, our time, our abilities, our resources, our every breath–knowing Christ gave everything for us.

“Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering: The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord in the place the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy.’” -Leviticus 6:25

One thing is clear in Leviticus: holiness is important to God. Each offering includes steps for proper preparation, instructions are given for prayers, and even clothing is considered holy. But what is holiness?

Holiness is simply to be set apart. In this case, it means to be set apart of use by God. The apostle Paul spoke in Romans 12:1-2 about believers making their lives a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable in God’s sight. These offerings in Leviticus foreshadow the calling given to us in this day.

We may consider our lives ordinary or even unimportant. They’re not. We are calling not only to live holy, but to be holy. We are to live set apart from the destructive habits of this world and to live a life pleasing to the Lord. Our goal is not to escape the hard realities of this life or to seek to please ourselves. We live “most holy” to the Lord. You were created on purpose and for a purpose. Live holy before the Lord today.
