“Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.” -Leviticus 18:24

Leviticus 18 is one of those chapters you can use the grab the attention of a guy who shows zero interest in the Bible. Just start reading the chapter out loud among a group of men and watch the attention level change. Most people cannot even believe the words are actually in there.

In fact, it’s so dicey that one of the only verses I can quote here is one of the summary statements near the end: “Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.” Apparently, the nations surrounding Israel during this time had taken perversion to a level that can still red-face Americans.

All this to say, God is concerned with our sexual practices. We are not to follow the path of our culture, but the path of Scripture. God created us, including our sexual expressions, and therefore best knows how to instruct us in this area. When we decide our way is best and follow our own human desires, a lot of damage takes place.

A few examples: P+++ is the the leading reason the majority of men surf the internet. There are more than one million child sex slaves. Prostitution is actually legal is some countries. MTV recently started plans for a show to highlight teens who were going through the process of losing their virginity (though the show’s plans have now been ended). What more evidence do we need?

Sexuality is spiritual. Live accordingly.

Let’s talk about it on Facebook! Share your thoughts, pictures, or videos on handwriting Scripture.

“Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you…” -Leviticus 17:13

Many readers of the Old Testament overlook the fact that God often mentions immigrants among his directions for his people. Why? Because there were many non-Jews who also followed the Lord. Even deeper, it’s because God’s love extends to all people, including those considered outsiders by this world.

It’s am important mental transition to make for Christians: God’s love does not stop at our nation’s border. God loves people from Egypt and Japan and Haiti and Chile as much as he loves every American.

In addition, God equally loves those within our nation’s boundaries whether they are immigrants or natives, legals or illegals. Such distinctions do not change his view of us.

Why can’t we be more like him?

“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.” -Leviticus 16:32

Leviticus 16 is dedicated to details related to the Jewish Day of Atonement. Once each year, on the seventh day of the tenth month, a sacrifice was made on behalf of the people of the Lord. Why? From their vantage point, they realized they were sinners in need of forgiveness. Atonement was a ceremony used to express this dependence upon God.

The Day of Atonement also foreshadowed what Christ would later offer through his death on the cross. His blood was sacrificed as a once-for-all atonement to offer forgiveness to those who believe in him as Savior. We need not celebrate a Day of Atonement. Instead, we live in the forgiveness Christ has given us as believers every moment of every day. As a result, we rejoice. We worship. We live as those who are redeemed by the perfect atonement of Jesus Christ.
