Augmented Reality Sandbox with Real-Time Water Flow Simulation

Video of a sandbox equipped with a Kinect 3D camera and a projector to project a real-time colored topographic map with contour lines onto the sand surface. The sandbox lets virtual water flow over the surface using a GPU-based simulation of the Saint-Venant set of shallow water equations.

We (the UC Davis W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences, http://www.keckcaves.org) built this for an NSF-funded project on informal science education. These AR sandboxes will be set up as hands-on exhibits in science museums, such as the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) or Lawrence Hall of Science.

According to NOAA scientists at the National Climatic Data Center (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/), record and near-record breaking temperatures dominated the eastern two-thirds of the nation and contributed to the warmest March on record for the contiguous United States, a record that dates back to 1895. This animation shows the locations of each of the 7,755 daytime and 7,517 nighttime records (or tied records) in sequence over the 31 days in March.

Indoor Evacuation Simulation with OpenStreetMap (IndoorOSM) data

This video demonstrates a multi-agent traffic simulation for the scenario of an emergency indoor evacuation. As a simulation framework MATSim (http://www.matsim.org) is utilized. The required files (network, agents etc.) are automatically generated from volunteered geographic information (VGI) of OpenStreetMap. The data in OSM is mapped according to the IndoorOSM mapping proposal (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IndoorOSM). The use case buildings consists of four floors with three bigger (lecture) rooms and several offices. The scenario assumes that the building is fully occupied, that is all lecture rooms and offices are occupied, which results in a total number of 313 agents. All agents are routed to one single building exit, thus the scenario describes a organized and structured evacuation. 100 simulation iterations have been conducted, whereby this video features iterations zero, 50 and 100. http://giscience.uni-hd.de
