1. Put a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of an ice cream cone to prevent ice cream drips.

2. Keep potatoes from budding by placing an apple in the bag of potatoes.

3. If cake recipe calls for flouring baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead of flour and there will not be any white mess on the outside of the cake

4. If you over-salt a dish by mistake while it’s cooking, drop in a peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt.

5. Put celery in aluminum foil when putting in refrigerator and it will keep longer, probably weeks.

6. Headache Cure: Take a lime, cut in half and rub it on your forehead. Throbbing is gone!

Make sure that you read up on this so you know what major provisions are taking place and to make sure your company or companies are following them.

Valentine’s Day comes around only once a year. It’s not too much to ask that you and your sweetheart spend a little together time, away from family (including the children), friends, jobs, you name it. ...

Valentine’s Day comes around only once a year. It’s not too much to ask that you and your sweetheart spend a little together time, away from family (including the children), friends, jobs, you name it. Three years ago, my husband and I stopped with the gift giving and instead decided to spend time together doing something we both thought would be fun. Here are my top three ideas for this year:

1) I’m starting with this one because this is where I will be spending time with my special guy. The Whispering Vines Vineyards and Winery will kick off the evening of February 13th, 2010 (Saturday) with a wine tasting followed by a murder mystery. My guy and I have always been suckers for a good mystery! The show costs around $65 per person (which includes dinner, tax, and tip). Call right away to see if reservations are still available. Their number is (918) 447-0808.

2) The Tulsa Zoo is hosting a “Wild at Heart” Valentine’s Day event. It will be held from 7-11pm on Saturday, February 13th, 2010. The evening starts out with cocktails and a fantastic dinner provided by Taste of the Wild Catering. There is also a chance for you to break in some new dancing shoes to the music of Earl Clark and the Spectrum. After that, a twilight train ride will wisk you away. Call 918-669-6634 for your reservation (hurry, tickets go quickly).

3) The BOK Center will be hosting a Skate Date on Sunday, February 14th from 10am-10pm. A disco ball will be floating over the 17,000 square foot frozen floor. They’ll be music and special lighting to give the center that romantic touch.

It doesn’t matter what you decide to do, as long as you do it together!

Pizza is probably not one of the healthiest foods but you can order it and make it healthier by what you put on it. Most of us love pizza and we’re not going to stop ...

Pizza is probably not one of the healthiest foods but you can order it and make it healthier by what you put on it. Most of us love pizza and we’re not going to stop eating it so we might as well make it as healthy as we can for ourselves. I think football season is when my household orders pizza the most.

Here are some of those ways:

1. Eat fruits, vegies, or nuts before the pizza.

2. Skip the side of breadsticks or at least limit yourself to one (I know, hard to do).

3. Don’t order the extra cheese, the lighter the cheese the better.

4. Pat your slices of pizza with napkin to soak up excess fat.

5. Choose shrimp or grilled chicken for topping (or Canadian bacon if you don’t like that).

6. Load pizza up with vegetables.

7. Go with thin crust (less calories) and some even have whole-wheat crusts now.

Hope this helps, it can’t hurt!

Any type of squash may be used. Puncture squash skin several times with a knife. Put in microwave on high for 10 minutes. Remove and cool. When squash is cool, cut, remove seeds, peel and cut into squares of your desired serving size. Put in 9 x 13 pan (which has been sprayed with Pam). On stove top, in sauce pan, combine 1 stick butter, 1/2 cup honey, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 T. vinegar. Bring to boil. Stir. Sprinkle chopped walnuts and craisins over squash squares. Pour liquid mixture over all. Bake at 350 for 1 hour, or until done.

Best squash I have ever had!

I used to get tired of people always claiming that kids need certain portions of foods that I never had as a kid and hadn’t even heard of some, but after a lot of research I am now feeling it’s a good idea to give kids what they need as they are growing up. Anything that can help them in years to come can’t be a bad thing.

Today, I was reading that children ages 4 to 8 need at least 2 daily servings of whole grains, which contain more iron, B vitamins, fiber and protein then refined ones do. There is a book called “Whole Grains for Busy People” by Lorna Sass which proves to be very educational and actually very interesting. I also find out other interesting information at the health food stores.

Some of the whole grains to choose from are quinoa (use in cold salads, good source of iron and zinc), buckwheat (use toasted buckwheat for breakfast with blueberries, good source of magnesium), whole-wheat couscous (use in chicken broth, good source of fiber and protein), barley (use in chicken salad, good source of fiber), or farro (use as rice, good source of protein).
