We started some production finally this week. Expect the site to come alive after the holiday weekend.

I know we wanted an official launch on July 1st, but foes that ever work out? Thanks for hanging in there.

Salsa unveils two new mountain bikes

Bike maker Salsa has unveiled two 2009 bikes this week, the El Kaboing 26-inch-wheel suspension bike and the Big Mama, a 29er suspension rig for those folks for whom 26-inch wheels just aren’t big enough.

Both bikes fall into the ‘trail bike’ category, with five inches of travel for the El Kaboing and four for the Big Mama. Both also use custom-drawn aluminium-scandium alloy tubing (usually just referred to as ‘Scandium’ even though scandium is actually just one of the alloying elements) to increase fatigue life and allow the shaving of some weight.

The DirtCartel.com team was in Vancouver this last week checking out the scene. Let me just say that as good as the mountain biking is up there, the internet access leaves a LOT to be desired.

Anyway we are on track to launch July 1st.

And the photo of the month for may will go up today...late as it is.

SRAM Blackbox

We have been hearing little leaks of news that people tell us about SRAM Blackbox Racing. Is it some kind of high end parts line? Is it a total new brand? Low end parts?

Well, at the Blackbox site that is now up the only bit of concrete information available is this quote:

Blackbox racing development program is a proving ground for new performance products

Well that just clears up everyting.

Tradgedy at Sea Otter | Mark Reynolds Dies

In a freak mishap on the downhill course, mountain biking lost a brother. Mark Reynolds.

The San Francisco Chronicle carried the story:

Mark Reynolds, 48, crashed into a dirt embankment on a relatively flat portion of the downhill course during the Sea Otter Classic on Saturday at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area. He was taken by helicopter to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he died. An autopsy conducted Monday revealed that Mr. Reynolds suffered fatal injuries in the accident, deputy coroner Thomas Jenkins said. Initial reports that Mr. Reynolds, an amateur racer, may have suffered a medical problem before he crashed were incorrect. The accident happened near the finish line of the downhill course which, according to race organizers, contains "a great mix of jumps, turns, pedaling sections and hi-rev speed traps" and "rewards racers who demonstrate fitness, precision handling, braking and pedaling skills."

Running Sucks | fat cyclist

If you're not reading the Fat Cyclist Blog, you need to start. Even if it is just roadies and goaters. This article on running had me falling out of my seat.

Both runners and cyclists get injured while doing their thing. Thats just a given. For cyclists, every injury has an accompanying story that can be treasured, tweaked, and told for decades to come. I admit that there have been times when, even as I writhed in pain, a little part of me was working on the description of how bad I hurt. Runners, on the other hand, get to talk about how they were jogging along when spung! their kneecaps fell off, due to overuse.
