The Thracian funeral burial mounds (tumuli) in the archaeological reserve of “Sborianovo”, near Isperih are built as a mirror projection of the starry sky and hides an astronomical information, older than the Babylonian one. This hypothesis is proposed by the 76-year-old historian and ex-director of the Isperih museum – Iordan Stephanov.

The disposition of these tumuli recreates the constellations of the visible part of the sky from our latitude: Ursa major, Camelopardalis (giraffe), Auriga, Perseus, Cassiopeia, Lacerta, Cepheus and Draco (dragon). The size of the tumuli corresponds to the brightness of the stars.

The hypothesis of “Sborianovo”, being a huge ancient astronomical complex, is sustained by the so-called “Mysterious stone” found in the atrium of the central chamber of the King mound in “Sveshtari”. According to the astronomer prof. Vladimier Dermendjiev, from the astronomical observatory of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the stone hides an ancient astronomical information.

Nobody can explain the purpose of building this astronomical chart, but the precision of copying the sky with it’s constellations speaks about the exceptional geodesic skills of the Thracian and their knowledge of the outer space.

The star map of “Sborianovo” is much more complicated than the representation of the constellation “Pleiades”, founded in January this year, in Val-d’Aoste, Italy.

According to the historical Iordan Stephanov, the biggest mystery is how the architect has planed his conception to be executed for the further three centuries.

The esteemed discovery for the Bulgarian Middle age history was done by the archaeologists professor Kazimir Popkonstantinov who’s working at the monastery complex of the palace in the Middle age capital of Bulgaria.

The unique find was done near one of the walls at the monastery complex. Instead of pagan images, the old Bulgarian citizens have been into a search for deiform characters. (more…)

Situated 3 kilometers South Western to the Bulgarian- Turkey boarder line at Malko Turnovo, this tomb is placed up on a hill with about 40 more tumulus hills. The explored complex of four different types of tombs is being “city of the deceased” during the Hellenic and Roman epoch. At the constructed by marble blocks tombs were found coins, which confirms for the existence of the “Haronovic obol”- tradition and ritual of paying the transmission of the dead threw the underground river Sticks. Little bronze coin (obol) has been placed under the tongue of the buried for paying to Haron- the ferry driver at the underground kingdom. The archeologists dated as last period of dwelling IV century AC.

Thracian tomb with half-tubular vault arch was found by archaeologists at Zarevo municipality.
Director of the studies Daniela Agre announced that this is the first tumulus from this type that is found in Strandja mountain. “This is probably tomb of local possessor who ruled South-Eastern Thracia” adds Daniela Agre. The tumulus has been constructed by ductile limestone, unfortunately demolished by treasure-hunters. Part of the tomb is not affected, there were found amphoras, glue Thrace ceramic and walled grave of white limestone, was confirmed lately front of the BTA.
The Archaeologists supposes that this find is from about 370-360 BC. As Daniela Agre told earlier, this find is familiar to the Thrace tumulus at Sboryanovo, which is under the protection of UNESKO.

After examination and researches of all historic sources for the “saint Ivan Rilski” chearch at Veliko Turnovo, the archaeologists Hitko Vachev and professor Nikolay Ovcharov are going to succeed with their 20 years dream- to find where exact this building is. The start of this project has been given during the previous week at the Veliko Turnovo Asenov quarter. Director of the regional historic museum has told that the equip has been into a need to dispose of 200 cubic meters with garbages for being able to start the excavation . All the peoples at this quarter knows this place as dung-hill. Some of the early local citizens already knew that there has been situated church long time ago. The construction of this church was found just for about 30 meters distance to the “Saint Peter and Pavel” church. Until now, excepting the complex holy 40 martyrs” at the Asenov quarter there are almost zero number of excavations. By the words of the local archaeologists this territory is undeservedly disregarded. (more…)

At the end of August, 2002 Archaeologists with team leader Krasimir Leshtakov discovered new terrain for excavation works at the area of Yabalkovo village, Dimitrovgrad municipality. The excavation team have found female ceramic figure of about 8000 years at fire demolished settlement from the early Neolith. At 2003 the excavation works at the object were restarted, there was found part of cooper slag, dated to the sixth millennium before Christ. Among the finds there are parts of unique vessel in a shape of bull where, by the words of doctor Leshtakov probably has been preserved opium, amulet by very solid rock, that is typical for the eastern Rhodope mountain, cult side-tables and collection of stone tools and implements, used for production of items and instruments.
We got profound information for the pit sanctuary dated to the early iron epoch at the Karabiuliuk area, near Yabalkovo village by Milena Tonkova and Rumen Mikov for the Archeology report of 2004. At the western sector of the excavated terrain they have been into a find with many many materials of the late iron epoch ( fragments of Greek Аmphora, black ceramic as well as some typical for the epoch vessels, made by wheel and hand made. At quarter 25, at the same western sector and depth of about 1 meter the excavation team have found collective find of bronze coins- four of them of Philip II Macedonian, three of Alexander the Great. They have been dеferred for around 323-320 before Christ. Near the end of IV Before Christ is the near period of the earlypostumne alexandricia with king title, that is found at the quarter H 22 at depth 0.55 meters.
At the central sector ( that front upped part of the object - tumulus Karabiuliuk ) are at pawn two drillings with dimensions 5 x 2 meters. At the first one that working team has found vessels by the lately iron epoch and destructions of Neolith building. (more…)

Their father dies too early and they pass under the guardianship of their uncle Teoktisto, who’s a highly placed official at the Empire. The associated professor figures that on an fresco at the Thracian tomb near Kazanlak is illustrated the ruler Roygos and his father Seuthes III . An year ago, mister Boshnakov saw superscription straight at the cupola inside the tomb, made above the figures of the two posessors and at the field of thеse three chariots. The associated professor have doubts about this and after the confirmation of his request to get in and do new pictures, that corroborate the theory. At the following studies with infra red and ultraviolet shines, the scientists have found that the superscription “painted by Kodzimasis” and under it the following: ” Roygos, son of Seuthes III “. (more…)

The situated in the south-eastern party of the present city Varna Roman thermae (balnearia, Balneae and balineae also) are the biggest public, ancient building ever found in Bulgaria, after Perperikon probably. These quite preserved walls are tracing out the imposing dimensions of this building, erected up on about 7000 square meters terrain. The fat walls has been built in specific technology, that take it in turns stone wall and five to six ranges of densely clay bricks. That inside stairs and the vault arch of the doors are shaped by enormous stone blocks, there are still rests at some places from terrific mosaic fragments. They are giving us quite good imagination for the rich decoration of the public building, along with the marble fragments, the capitals and the tiges. (more…)

This inscription ( in Greek letters) written at marble plaque, situated inside the church is getting us back in the time, at the troubled times, when this temple has been built. It remains that this is the olderst church in Varna, fact that makes us asking ourself: What we knows about it? This inscription is so short.. We knows the church ‘ the Assu of Most Holy Merry’ in this condition, but it is due to reconstructions. Originally the Temple has been with dimensions 7 meters long and 8 meters weight. The first reconstruction adds little angle to west with enlargement of 2.4 meters. Much later, it is enlarged with 4.5 meters more and lastly, following the same direction there is enlargement 7.5 meters and rise with about 0,40 meters. That is the way how the temple has been shaped for the view in present time.
At the last couple of years the Temple has been fully renovated and we all owe a debt of gratitude to these three persons about it- Dimiter Lefterov, Lazar Vichev and Edelvais Nikolov and all other sponsors, donors and contributors.
For Varna’s citizens this Temple will always be “the one with the miraculous sacred image”. For the miraculous sacred image of Holy Virgin Mary with the infant (that is still at the church) we know the following legend. This icon has been found in the summer of year 1602 by Christian at the ‘Teke Karaach’ area, situated for about 3 km north-western direction to Varna. There has been situated old Bulgarian monastery dated to the Second Bulgarian Kingdom with water spring and three big elm-trees. Going to the spring for water, this person is seeing on the top of the middle one, the highest elm-tree an icon, just between the boughs. He is getting right back at town saying to the priest what he had saw. Word went around that sacred image, and there are so many Christians. front of their doors in short time. (more…)

The ‘Saint Dimiter’ church is situated under the north-eastern slope of Trapezica, at the right coast of Yantra river, This is the oldest and precious dated middle age church in Turnovgrad. This temple is related to the manifestation of the rebel of the Bulgarians during the 1185 under the rule of the boyars Peter and Asen for rejecting the Byzantian domination. After the successful end of the rebel and the restoring of the Bulgarian Kingdom, the church probably has been reformed into King’s one. Here are crowned the first possessors of the Asen’s dynasty- Peter, Asen, Kaloyan. Little bit later, at the end of XVII century and the beginning of XVII century, toward the church has been constructed and monastery. Dated to this buildings are the archaeological finds after 1971, four big buildings , situated toward the east, west and south directions. The church “ Saint Dimiter” and the monastery survive to the third quarter of XIII when they are demolished, probably by earth shake. Later, during the XV century with materials from the demolished church, southern to her has been erected another church, which is on the basements of the southern monastery building. After the destroying of the “Saint Dimiter” church and the monastery around during the second half of the XIV century, here has been created big Christiandom necropolis, that survive until the XX century, There are explored and investigated more that 500 funerals by this necropolis, all the finds and rests are preserved at ossuary in the northern part f the yard. (more…)

This unique sculptural effigy with head of ancient warrior was found at the conservation works on the citadel in Pliska. For the archaeologists this might be the first human face effigy ever found at Bulgaria. The statue has been made by limestone that must be from the Shumen’s plateau area. The face of the ancient warrior got lineaments of Asian Bulgars. Sign of fight sore at the left cheek gives ope to the archaeologists that the warrior could be one of the rulers during the first bulgarian empire.
“Our first association was similar to the early turks bare liefs, especially the so called “Keman’s grannies”, explain the archaeologist Valeri Grigorov.

Continuing our column for eminent personalities, we wouldn’t skip one of the very own patriots and emblematic guide of one idea, that gives large, deep echo into central Europe during the end of XVIII century. This person is main revolutionary at that clean and worthy meaning, where human liberty and freedom is as far to the Ottoman empire (Turkey is proclaimed for secular authority at 1921), as closed have been some of the first democracies to this area.
Vasil Ivanov Kunchev, as known as Vasil Levski or apostle of freedom is the ideologist and organizer of the Bulgarian national revolution and founder and co member at the Internal revolutionary organization and the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee. It is interesting fact that he is popular with his own and parent names at least. He undersign himself as deacon Levski (Levski comes from the Bulgarian лъв [luv], which means lion. His brothers-in-arms had been using the Deacon Levski or just The Deacon. Some other alias that we got are the principal bookseller, Stampy, Dragoman. He has some Turk elias, like Aslan Dervishoolu Kurdjaly (documented at the BRCC- Bucharest, June 16th 1872; in fact aslan mean on Turkish lion) or efendi Aslan Dervishoolu.
Vasil Ivanov Kunchev was born at 18th of June,1837 at Karlovo in the family of Ivan Kunchev Ivanov and Gina Vasileva Karaivanova. He got two brothers- Hristo and Petar- and two sisters Ana and Maria. It is known that his father died at 1851 and he must carry on his family as biggest from all male inheritors.
During 1855 Vasil Levski is lay brother to his uncle Hadji Vasilii, mendicant friar at Hilandar. Two years he is being at the school of Stara Zagora and one more at the Plovdiv’s eparchy class school. December, 7th 1858 he took the vows of a deacon and name Ignatii into the Sopot monastery “Saint Spas”.
Later (near 1861) under the influence of Georgi Sava Rakovski, Levski dedicates his life to the revolutionary cause.
The excavation works near Golyam Dervent, Elhovo Municipality are restarted. There were found fragments of enormous frieze, amazing decorated with geometric images.
The sensation at the case is the image of labris - deeply encrusted at the paving stone near the main entrance of the funeral camera. The labris has been all the time symbol of King’s power and might. That is the very first and unique find of labris at the territory, ruled by Thracian tribes with image from about IX-IIX century before Christ. That king’s symbol during the II millennium B.C. is becoming symbol of Odrysian dynasty and the appearance of labris III centuries earlier is confirming that this territory, where later appear the Odrysian kingdom is the place where statesmanship’s unifying has been started for first time at Thracia. (more…)
