To prove the point, in one half-day exploration of Flinders Chase National Park, on the western side of the island, we were privileged enough to see kangaroos, koalas, seals, sea-lions, ospreys and, to cap it all off, we even saw three Southern Right Whales from our viewing spot on the cliff-top! And whilst I am notoriously slow at spotting wallabies in the undergrowth, even I was eventually able to clock a few as they went about their daily business.

It was a great treat for me too, but if you're not keen on relaxing in the spa then you can also enjoy clifftop walks, fishing trips or simply kick back and enjoy the views over the Southern Ocean... Perfect!!

Now however, the whole island will be put on the silver screen with the filming of an as-yet-untitled epic based on the dramatic, gory and downright bizarre Njal’s Saga.

Njal’s Saga is widely credited as being the best of Iceland’s fantastic medieval tales. Njal’s Saga tells the story of a series of vicious blood feuds during the Christian conversion of Iceland, the involvement of Icelanders in the vicious Battle of Clontarf just outside Dublin, and concludes with an uncharacteristically peaceful ending for the saga after the wanton (and sometimes comedic!) violence of the earlier chapters.

The film, to be directed by Iceland’s number one director Baltasar Kormakur, is set to cost in the region of $60m making it by far the most expensive film ever made in Iceland. It is a fitting tribute to the longevity of the sagas and their important place at the heart of Iceland’s cultural identity. The film is currently in production and due to be released some time in 2010 – definitely something to look forward to!

This was followed by a longer walk through the Valley of the Winds, a surprisingly lush, green oasis that contrasts brilliantly against the vivid red rocks and clear blue skies above.

This afternoon saw us embark on a trip to the region's undisputed key drawcard, Uluru (Ayers Rock). There are countless ways to view The Rock: on foot, by helicopter, by camel or even climbing it (still permitted, but strongly discouraged by the Aborgines, for whom Uluru is a place of huge spiritual importance). But we chose to travel in style on the back of a Harley Davidson! This really is such a fun way to explore - with an empty road in front, the wind in your face and a surprisingly comfortable saddle, we went just fast enough for a thrill but slowly enough to be able to take a few million more photos along the way (and let's face it, you can never have too many pictures of Uluru!). Definitely a top recommendation for putting a big smile on your face and for a whole new perspective on this iconic landmark.

The day finished with a fascinating guided walk around the base of Uluru - learning more about the stories and legends of the local Aborigines and the important part that the landscape plays. As the sun sets, the rock changes colour from a soft red to a glowing orange, so vivid it has to be seen to be believed. And then the show is over, we finish the champagne and head back to our luxurious accommodation at Voyages Longitude 131 for a gourmet dinner and an early night - well, it's up early tomorrow for another glorious sunrise over Uluru before we say farewell to the Red Centre and head south to Kangaroo Island.... More on that next time!

By Liz Lunnon, on location in Australia...

Discover the World pioneered whale watching holidays in Iceland and we are very happy to see how successful it has become.

So far 2009 looks like being one of the best seasons in history for Husavik sightings. Just last week, blue and humpback whales where sighted on almost every whale watching voyage. You can read a report of one of those exciting days here, a blue whale frolicking alongside the boat in the extraordinary light of the midnight sun.

The blue whale is believed to be the largest animal ever to have existed, growing up to over 30 metres in length. It’s heart alone can weigh the same as ten men and the whale itself can be as heavy as more than 200 Nissan Micra cars! A newly born calf however is only the size of a fully grown hippopotamus! To say the least – these are big mammals!

The humpback is positively diminutive compared to the blue whale, coming in at a “measly” 12-15 metres in length. However, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with dramatic leaps and acrobatic breaching, as well as a remarkable head covered in bumpy hair follicles. The sight is as arresting as the noise; when in season, a humpback whale may give off a whale song lasting a number of hours - it’s not quite tuneful enough for the X Factor but it’s certainly an incredible racket!

For an even better taste of the whale watching experience, here is a fantastic video from our whale watching partners in Iceland, North Sailing.
Split into four parts, entitled Land, Water, Air and People, the book makes for a wonderful insight into Icelandic life. “Land” features some of Iceland’s greatest rock features, be they striking basalt formations or the lunar landscape of the lava fields, whilst “water” is a paean to Iceland’s stunning waterfalls and the majesty of the sea. “Air” is a selection of aerial photographs, allowing you to see the huge scale of Iceland’s incredible natural landscape, but the “people” featured in the fourth section are what makes the book great, with expressive images of Iceland’s hardy fishermen, urban trendsetters and political heavyweights alike. Some of the photographs can be seen at Thorsten Henn’s website and are published in the book for the first time.

Why not make your own photography voyage to Iceland’s remarkable scenery, or leave the camera at home and simply collect a host of unforgettable memories. From horse-riding through the gorgeous countryside to chilling out in the Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik with Thorsten’s trendy urban hipsters, you’ll never be shy of something extraordinary in Iceland.

As part of GMTV's Healthy Heart Week,’ they have sent it’s resident GP Dr Hillary Jones out to Iceland to look at how and why residents of the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ are so healthy, and why the quality of life is consistently placed in the top ten in the world. As Dr Hillary moves around Iceland, you can see why Icelanders like to get out in the outdoors. From swimming in the Blue Lagoon to wandering down the black sand beaches of Skedararsandur, there’s plenty of opportunities for the active amongst you. And having got some fresh air and had a good walk you’ll probably be hungry – so tuck into some of Iceland’s famously fresh fish and vegetables for that extra healthy burst. After all of that you’ll have definitely earned a guilt-free glass of wine in one of Reykjavik’s fabulous bars or cafes, and if your idea of exercise is dancing the night away then you’ve got plenty of trendy clubs to choose from – and there’s nothing better for dealing with the bleary-eyed morning after than a dip in the hot springs of the Blue Lagoon.

Travel to Iceland and reinvigorate body, mind and perhaps even your dancing shoes…

Before 1944, Iceland was a sovereign state under the control of the Danish King, but when Icelanders were given a vote in 1944 to decide their future they voted overwhelmingly to create the “Lythveldith Island” – the Republic of Iceland.

Icelanders are rightly proud of their culture and heritage, and today is the chance to celebrate the heroes of their independence movement, their cultural exports, and their incredible literary history embodied through the world-famous Icelandic sagas. Brass bands and musicians will today lead parades around Iceland’s major towns before children tuck into sweets and the adults enjoy a swig of Brennivin, Iceland’s rather pungent national drink.

Why not celebrate Iceland’s culture yourself with a trip to the ‘Land of Ice and Fire.’ Enjoy the traditional restaurants specialising in delicious fresh fish and lamb, explore the National Gallery, or simply marvel at the stunning scenery that served as a backdrop to the sagas.

Yet despite Bond's dramatic car chase across the frozen over lagoon, something even more dramatic is happening! The lagoon is fed by the Vatnajokull ice cap, one of the largest ice masses in the world and just a few days ago the tongue of the glacier which supplies Jokulsarlon has surged forward, filling the lagoon almost entirely with crevaces, ice sheets and gargantuan icebergs (see image). The icebergs are a regular occurrence on the lagoon, but very rarely to this extent. Indeed, the icebergs in the future may halt the operation of the sightseeing boats that cruise on the lake but never fear - Icelanders expect the unexpected, and have plans in place for glacial boat trips in an alternative lagoon. And, in July and August, we will begin sightseeing flights from the East coast town of Hofn that will take you over Jokulsarlon and the vast black sands of Skeidararsandur and up to the highest peaks of Vatnajokull; definitely an experience not to be missed!

The surge is just another example of the natural processes that continue to shape a most unique country - and Icelander's reaction to it just another example of their hardiness and preparedness in the face of an ever-changing and always exciting landscape. Click here to find out more.

There's never been a better time to explore Iceland's dramatic natural landscape.

If, like me you are looking forward to outdoor summer art events and would happily travel to experience the joys festivals bring then perhaps the Summer Art Festival in Akureyri in Iceland is just for you.

Akureyri in north-east Iceland is the largest town outside the capital region and is situated in a spectacular fjord. The location provides the perfect setting to enjoy the contrasts of the bustling town with the tranquillity of the spectacular fjordland. The Summer Art Festival runs from mid-June to the end of August and is ‘crawling with bohemians and art lovers during the festival’. However, if your summer is already planned out then fear not as Iceland is sure to satisfy any hungry artists’ desire throughout the year.

So get out there, explore your creativity, indulge your senses and return feeling inspired and full of wonderful memories.

I can now reveal that a British couple, travelling with Discover the World to Iceland recently captured on camera, for the first time ever, Iceland’s ‘Hidden People’.

Read on and hear it from Mr and Mrs Fanuci, the captors themselves!

‘I just couldn’t believe my eyes. As my husband and I walked through the Icelandic countryside absorbed by the incredible views we caught a glimpse of a unique looking gentleman. Having walked for hours in remote countryside with no one in sight we decided to head over to the curious looking man who then scurried behind a rock. My husband, overcome by intrigue ventured over whilst I held back with my camera just in case I needed to capture any evidence of some sort…you never know nowadays who or what you may come across! So as I stood there waiting, hoping my husband wasn’t in danger, the stranger hopped out again and appeared stunned. I quickly took a few snaps with my camera and beckoned my husband to come back. The gentleman fled and we returned to our hotel in disbelief at the afternoon’s occurrence. We showed the hotelier our photos who then confirmed that he was in fact one of Iceland’s ‘Hidden People’. Incredible’

Truly unbelievable, I say! I have been to Iceland countless times and have never encountered the ‘Hidden People’… sometimes it really is just beginners luck!

Some in our group popped on a couple of extra layers, others you could see had taken the advice more literally and had their jackets bulging.

Looking somewhat ‘Michelin-like’ we waited patiently. With a jolt our chair began to ascend – we’re off! And…we’re not! The chair stopped suddenly for the next couple. Then we were off again, briefly, until the next couple boarded and so on – no wonder the journey to the top of Abisko would take 20 minutes.

The sky, absolutely filled with stars, looked promising with just a hint of a green wash growing steadily stronger. We kept our eyes firmly on the goings on above our heads rather than below our feet since it remained light enough to see the ground dropping away.

For those of a nervous disposition or prone to sea-sickness, you may want to prepare yourself for an interesting ride. As the chairs continued upwards it was only the cold that kept our conversation away from discussing the rocking from side to side and bouncing up and down, each time the journey was interrupted.

At the half way platform the temperature dropped noticeably but thankfully by now, everyone had boarded and the journey continued relatively smoothly - just as well as the wind was beginning to cut into our faces. The second half of the ascent was particularly steep and the tiny flashing lights, secured to each chair before we set off, seemed to carry on forever.

It was bitterly cold at the summit, the kind of cold that when we took off your gloves to fumble for our cameras, turned our hands claw-like. The temperature, with the wind chill factor was given as -26°C. By now the northern lights were performing in all their glory. We had a green arc reaching across our heads and gigantic vertical curtains you could actually believe were blowing in the wind. There were waves of light, appearing, pulsing then bleeding into the night. Whichever way we turned, the lights were appearing in some way or another, the group ‘ooh-ing and arr-ing’ as if watching fireworks.

People were frantically trying to photograph the displays and were getting frustrated when they couldn’t. Some even used flash which just didn’t work – much better to simply enjoy the moment than to worry about taking pictures. Mother Nature’s own light show is incredibly difficult to photograph well, unless you are able to use a really long exposure and that generally requires a tripod. Besides, there are so many wonderful professional images available, buying a postcard or a book back at the hotel seemed like a good idea – and it meant we could keep our gloves on!

At the summit Sky Station, the little café provided a much-welcomed place to warm up and our guide happily chatted to anyone wanting to know more about the lights – apparently the best sighting they’ve had for ages. We felt very privileged.

The last chairs home were at midnight but some of us decided to head back down earlier. The continued glow in the sky meant we could see all the way down the side of the mountain and the lights of our accommodation in the distance. Although the first drop over the side took our breath away, we spent the rest of our time watching further glimpses of the aurora and excitedly discussing what we’d just witnessed.

On the walk back to the hotel the feeling returned to our fingers and we headed off to the bar to thaw out completely. It may have been cold and slightly uncomfortable at times but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

Iceland is Europe’s biggest banana producer.

There you go, I couldn’t believe it myself either but after a little research I can safely say that this is true. This unusual fact may sound completely unlikely for a country so far north but in the small town of Hveragerdi, production of the popular yellow fruit is thriving. The abundance of cheap, geothermal energy allows Icelanders to grow produce not typically found this close to the Arctic Circle.

Hveragerdi, also known as the greenhouse village, in southwestern Iceland is the country’s epicentre of gardening and horticulture. This rural setting is well known for its greenhouses which are heated by geothermal water from volcanic hot springs in the area. It‘s not just bananas that are grown here however, other fruit, vegetables and increasingly exotic flowers are being cultivated too.

So, if after that little slice of information you still don’t believe me, venture over to Hveragerdi and see it for yourself!

"It was a cold crisp morning at the ICEHOTEL and I was feeling sad that our trip to Lapland was coming to an end. However, we had one last part of our trip to experience which was the husky sledging and I couldn't wait!

We had an early start and got kitted out in our warm snow suits, hats and boots. We walked over to the frozen River Torne and all you could hear was the sound of a phenomenal 32 huskies howling and eager to set off for their morning run.

There were four of us on the sledge, all being pulled by 8 excited and beautiful dogs. We were taken over the frozen River Torne and through the snow covered forest, it was so quiet, all you could hear was the sound of the dog's feet running across the snow. It was truly magical and I couldn't imagine that I would be back in rainy England that evening.

We stopped off at a cosy warm log cabin and inside there was a roaring fire where we were given hot drinks to warm up and a slice of cake, it was just what we needed after being out in the cold."

I can honestly say that husky sledging in Swedish Lapland is an unforgettable experience and I would recommend it to anybody!

Perhaps at this time of year you aren’t keen on conjuring chilly thoughts but by doing just that you can reduce those toe and finger numbing trips to the supermarket.

The Frozen Food Federation has begun a new campaign TheNewIceAge.com to illustrate just how ‘convenient, beneficial and healthy’ frozen food can be. There are a whole host of advantages and by buying frozen food you instantly have fresh food available to you any day of the week meaning less time traipsing to the supermarket to get your daily evening meals. But why a giant ice wall to launch this interesting campaign? Well, symbolism is everything and the giant ice wall illustrates the many facets that the campaign is endeavoring to promote. The fruit, vegetables and seafood that were incased in the ice demonstrated the quality and freshness of frozen foods with the concept that you could strip away the ice and have instant fresh food. For those of you wishing to find out more and learn how frozen food can enhance your life click here.

To use solely adjectives in conveying my recent trip and experiences in Swedish Lapland would neither give justice nor illustrate the beauty that beholds this wondrous region. However, for the benefit of those yet to experience this stunning wilderness I will try my best to describe, for me, the magical and seemingly undiscovered fairyland.

Powdery white snow, glistening and sparkling while the trees are bright with white frosted branches… an image one can think that is conjured only from story books and mythical lands but I can assure you, this is true of Swedish Lapland. Combine this with cosy log fires and the grandeur and architectural brilliance of the ICEHOTEL and you’re transported into a true winter wonderland. To appreciate this incredible destination is inconceivable unless it is experienced first-hand, you cannot imagine the crisp clear air and the silence that envelops the forests in which not a sound arises as you stand there in awe of your unique surrounds. As for the skies, well, you can see from the photo adjacent, they were beautiful. Many of you, now noting the volume of snow in the photo are probably thinking of the chill factor, I can imagine that many are thinking frost bite, numb fingers etc etc but in fact you would be surprised. I am prone to feeling the cold, however, ironically during the trip I didn’t feel cold once...the key I suppose is being prepared (something I perhaps should remember!) and wearing the right clothes, of which the ICEHOTEL has plenty! On one occasion I actually felt hot, remarkable.

With activities abound I returned from Swedish Lapland incredibly excited about my next trip back! From the moment I boarded the plane to Kiruna to the flight home through pink fluffy clouds, I can safely say I enjoyed every moment. It is truly a special and unforgettable place.

Having just returned from my trip to Swedish Lapland I decided that I had to share with you my experience of the phenomenon which everyone hopes to see when they travel to Lapland and that is the northern lights!!
Now as everyone knows, the northern lights do exist but due to weather situations or not the correct light, not everyone gets the chance to see them. However, luckily enough for me I wasn’t one of them.
It eventually got to our last night where we were doing the northern lights snowmobile tour. I had kind of given up on the thought of seeing them due to the rest of the time I’d been there being cloudy and having been told they hadn’t been seen for 3 weeks so thought I’d just make as much as I could out of the ride. Just before we left for the tour, our leader pointed to the sky and up above us were some very faint green lights. We all went silent but you could feel the excitement in the air. We were just hoping that the lights would turn into something stronger whilst we were in the wilderness and we’d get a really good show. As soon as we started snowmobiling I loved it. It was my turn to drive first and going through the snow forests and over frozen lakes it felt so magical and even more so as it was a couple of days before Christmas. After about 20 minutes we stopped in the middle of nowhere and turned off our engines and lights to see if we could see any movement in the sky. Unfortunately we couldn’t see anything happening. It was then my friend Ellie’s turn to drive and as she was going along I looked to the right of me and I could see the start of some light movement beginning to happen. A little way ahead we all stopped again and turned off our headlights. It was amazing. The lights were getting stronger and turned into a beautiful green where they made almost a semi-circle shape across the sky. It was an incredible experience to stand there and watch it happening. It was alien like as if there was another world coming up in the darkness. We stood watching it until it faded and then went onto a wilderness hut where we had a delicious dinner and just as we finished the dinner we were told there was another display so we all ran outside to have a look. This time there were two shapes either side of the sky and I think everyone was still in shock and completely amazed that we were standing there and we got to see them. It was truly magical. I’d recommend to everyone who is going on a trip to the Icehotel to book this excursion because even if you’ve given up hope of seeing the northern lights, you never know what will happen.

To whet your appetite the Joanna Lumley programme where she heads off in search of them is repeated again on the 29th Dec 2008 on BBC2 at 18.15.

To further the celebration, for the third consecutive year New Zealand was voted the top non-European country, closely followed by Australia.
Oceans is an 8-part series which looks in to the state of our oceans, the role they have played in the past, present and future with the aim of a better understanding them. The 18 strong production team led by explorer Paul Rose includes environmentalist Philippe Cousteau (grandson of Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau), maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue and marine biologist and oceanographer Tooni Mahto. In the creation of this series the team ventured into extreme environments over the course of a year from the Red Sea to the Arctic.

For me the Arctic is an area I cannot wait to see on Oceans, being one of the most inaccessible oceans in the world and an area that is most sensitive to climatic change this is bound to be an incredible episode and both highly interesting as well as awe-inspiring. The team travelled to the waters near Svalbard with the aim of getting a glimpse of the wonderful Arctic wildlife and phenomena and to get a snapshot of the state of some polar ecosystems. For those of you who are just bursting to see this Arctic episode, click here for behind the scenes footage and further information. Christmas at the ICEHOTEL is sure to be a magical world away from anything you’re experienced before. And if you contact us to reserve your place now, just think how smug you’ll feel come December! Ideal for the big kid in us all, here’s the perspective of one very happy 18 year old....

“Christmas Eve morning started with me being woken up at 9 to be told that I was going snowmobiling at 10. I jumped out of bed, got changed and was at the meeting point by 9:05. It took a lot of persuasion for me to go and have breakfast before but after a quick meal, we were off for a day’s fun. In the light you can see exactly how rough the terrain is, but it makes it much more fun and when you are travelling at 70kph across a lake with trees blanketed in snow, there is nothing that can beat it. After Christmas Eve dinner we headed back to our cosy cabin and despite being 18 and 14, my brother and I persuaded our mother to let us open our presents, just like the Swedes do. Come on, everyone acts like a 5 year old at Christmas.

Christmas morning started in a relaxed fashion then at 3pm we headed off to go husky sledging . It is extremely deceptive as the dogs are so strong and fast. Once again, I felt a Lewis Hamilton moment coming on. That night we slept in an art suite, where the ice had been sculpted to look like a dragon curling around the room and the bed emerged from the dragon’s snout. If you expect a cosy night, don’t forget that there is no central heating in an ICE room! However, the sleeping bags kept the cold at bay and I had my best night sleep, despite my brother snoring and kicking me all night!
The next day started with us being woken up with warm lingonberry juice which really is a gift from heaven in the cold and then after warming up in the morning sauna we headed up to the restaurant for breakfast”.

In amidst the current economic climate Iceland has reason to celebrate - a record number of visitors have been discovering the incredible delights of this spectacular country. The Iceland Tourist Board has revealed nearly a 15% increase in tourist numbers in September and the first few weeks of October in comparison with 2007 figures for these months. This is fantastic news for Iceland in this difficult time.

Iceland is a fantastic country to visit year round and offers visitors activities and sights abound throughout the seasons. My recent trip to Iceland fuelled my desire to visit more during the winter months and experience the country in a different light, literally. From an exhilarating snowmobile ride on the Myrdalsjokull glacier to luxuriating in the famous Blue Lagoon surrounded by snow covered lava fields whilst keeping your fingers crossed for a sighting of the Northern Lights, Iceland is a truly special destination. One sight that is truly wonderful is when the surface water of the famous Gullfoss is frozen in time as the winter climes encapsulate the flowing falls in ice.

Let me explain, yes I believe a few people who happen to be Icelandic made some fundamental mistakes, as did the Icelandic authorities in their handling of the situation, but really did this country, one of the closest friends and allies Britain has, deserve the vitriolic outburst which came from our Prime Minister? Surely these problems could have been resolved in a logical manner and behind closed doors without destroying the final vestiges of the Icelandic banking structure? Maybe there was another agenda here, Mr Brown?

I have worked side by side with Icelanders all my working life, building up the tourist industry between the UK and Iceland – some 35 years. I even lived there for a while and I can tell you there is not a more pleasant and genuine band of people to be found anywhere else on the planet. They are also very pro British in very many ways. They love Britain and many things British; in fact they follow our lifestyle in so many ways. Remember the Cod War? That’s when I lived in Iceland. It was another time of high emotions and differences between the British and Icelanders, yet I was treated with nothing but kindness. Icelanders felt this was a dispute between two governments which did not impact on the real world! In fact I am sure that is the way these very well balanced and hospitable people will treat visitors even now.

Iceland is a very special and unique land and their people, the vast majority of whom have nothing to do with the world of finance, have been more heavily hit by the world financial crisis than anyone else. They are a very proud nation and I’m sure they do not wish to avoid or renege on their responsibilities. However, is it reasonable to expect them to assume responsibility for a debt which amounts to £125,000 for every man, woman and child in the country, just because some of their fellow countrymen made mistakes? Did they really deserve to be treated like terrorists (the anti terrorism law is what the British government used to seize Icelandic assets in the UK)?

I am sure that if I had an Icesave account I would feel extremely angry, but please let’s not look at the nation of Iceland as the culprit; it’s rather a victim which deserves our help and support.

Iceland is now home to the world's first certified CarbonNeutral® bottled water in both its operations and product - it has a zero carbon footprint.

The factory based in Olfus, Iceland is 100% naturally powered and harnesses the countries abundant renewable resources. The factory runs exclusively on geothermal & hydroelectric power using environmentally friendly machinery to bottle the water at the source of the Olfus Spring. This immense source is not only pure with outstanding taste but is one of the largest springs in the world. Only a minute quantity is bottled from the source thus does not affect the environmental balance of this resource plus it is bottled in 100% recyclable packaging. This truly is an environmentally friendly bottled water!

You’ll be happy to hear that Icelandic Glacial mineral water can be purchased in the UK in several stores including Waitrose but for an authentic drinking experience why not visit Iceland and drink straight from the source!

Actually, this is comes as no surprise to me. After staying there recently I can safely say that it deservedly is ‘the’ place to stay in Reykjavik, situated near the national parliament on a grassy square and just a stones throw away from the main shopping street and nightlife.

Hotel Borg is a beautiful 4-star Art Deco hotel recently restored to its original Art Deco style and furnished to an extremely high standard with every detail noted to perfection from the door handles to the overall decor and ambience, I could not fault it. Even the breakfast room is a delight, as I strolled sleepily down to breakfast I was pleasantly surprised by a beautifully candle lit hallway leading to the old English style breakfast room. To further Hotel Borg’s appeal they have a beautifully designed restaurant Silfur that takes a modern stance to the Art Deco style and serves delicious French cuisine by an award-winning chef.

Whether you are on a romantic city break or on a self-drive holiday to Iceland, I highly recommend a stay at Hotel Borg, one of the world’s 100 best hotels.

Having recently returned from a trip to Iceland I thought to share my experiences and adventures. From driving in hurricane-like weather to staying in the luxurious Hotel Borg in Reykjavik – I can truly say my trip was full of wonderful experiences and sights full of continuous contrasts. I kept asking myself, where in the world can you drive for miles and see nothing but lava fields, waterfalls abound, black sand deserts, glaciers galore and empty roads….the answer, no where but here in Iceland.

To further Iceland’s wonderful appeal the food was fabulous too. Being a pesco-vegetarian sometimes travelling abroad can be slightly pesky in terms of finding a variety of dishes to try but I can truly say every restaurant offered a range of dishes, all of which I devoured to my delight. The delicious giant sized portions of fish, tasty skyr yoghurt, delightful chocolate (of which I ate a lot!) and fantastic restaurants, Iceland definitely ticks all the boxes for me!

As soon as I landed in Iceland I felt relaxed, with so much space and untouched surroundings it is hard not to feel anything but serene. Travelling along the south coast we visited many a waterfall, of which I have never experienced such a thundering and powerful fall as Seljalandsfoss. Incredible. In Iceland you really see the full force of Mother Nature and never have I seen a country so clearly shaped by its geological history, it really is a geologist’s paradise. I had a wonderful trip and would recommend Iceland to anyone interested in seeing a truly unique country.

For a nation of 300,000 people, Icelanders certainly pull their weight in the art and music world. Two of Iceland’s cultural institutions are coming to London in the upcoming autumn months and both are well worth a look.

The Sirkus Bar in Reykjavík was for many years home to many of Iceland’s greatest artists, musicians and writers and despite its ramshackle appearance was much loved by residents and visitors alike. Adorned with two over-sized puffins and light features that rarely worked, the bar was even home to one of Björk’s music videos.

Sirkus unfortunately couldn’t survive as modern bars moved in all around, but it will be resurrected in London for the upcoming Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park. The annual festival, which showcases the best of modern art and film, is happening this year from October 16-19 and is set to be bigger than ever. The Sirkus project, masterminded by the Icelandic art collective Kling & Bang, wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Iceland’s low-cost carrier Iceland Express. The original facade of the bar will be transported to Regent’s Park for an authentic Icelandic experience, and filled with the art and music that made it famous.

The Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, now entering it’s tenth year, is a unique festival experience that winds through Reykjavík’s streets every October. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the festival, which has hosted bands such as Bloc Party and the Kaiser Chiefs in the past, Airwaves is coming to the streets of East London for one night only on September 19. Featuring live music from a great mix of up-and-coming British bands and established Icelandic artists, it’s sure to be a fantastic night.

Fancy sampling Airwaves for yourself in its original setting? Get in quickly as you’ve only got two months before it kicks off, but if you want to sample some of Reykjavík’s famous cultural highlights and nightlife at a slightly less frenetic pace then a Reykjavík City Break might be just the tonic, complete with a host of optional excursions and extended breaks. Until then, head to London this autumn for an insight into a truly extraordinary culture.

Away from cities full of artificial light, the glorious Northern Lights are usually visible on clear nights in Iceland, Lapland and Greenland during the winter period.

Lumley travelled right across the region to many of our favourite destinations. After spending a night in the world-famous ICEHOTEL Joanna travels to the scenic Norwegian fjords of Lofoten as well as snowmobiling across the arctic tundra of Svalbard.

Encompassing both the ICEHOTEL and Lofoten, our Saab Lapland Explorer break represents a great opportunity to peruse the beautiful Nordic scenery at your leisure. Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, is the world’s most northerly permanently inhabited spot and our recent voyages to this Arctic region have featured polar bears and walruses among other remarkable sights.

You’ll have to tune in to BBC1 to see if Joanna Lumley achieves her lifelong ambition. Why not book your own adventure to one of our Nordic regions to sample the delights of a part of the world truly unlike any other.

Watch ‘Joanna Lumley; In the Land of the Northern Lights’ on BBC1 in early September.

Puffins; beautiful, hardy, a symbol of Icelandic ingenuity… food? Well, TV chef Gordon Ramsay was most interested in the latter and recently took his Channel 4 show ‘The F Word’ to Iceland’s Westman Islands in order to sample the local staple.

The Westman Islands, just off the South Coast of Iceland, are home to the largest concentration of these beautiful birds in the world and inhabitants there have been tucking in for centuries. Gordon’s adventure began by baking some lava bread in the world’s biggest oven, the still-warm Eldfell volcano mountain which erupted in 1973. The best was yet to come, though, as Ramsay made his way onto a cliff perilously close to the Atlantic Ocean to catch puffins in the traditional Icelandic manner – a net attached to the end of a very long pole!

After a few predictably unsuccessful attempts and some extremely hard work Ramsay finally bagged a puffin, but not before one particularly unhappy bird had nipped him on the nose. Perhaps he had heard what Ramsay was planning to do to one of his friends!

Once the puffin had been prepared, Gordon cooked up a scrumptious looking recipe of barbecued puffin with juniper tomatoes and traditional Skyr yoghurt.

Don’t be alarmed, though; not every visitor is expected to catch their own dinner. If Gordon’s adventure has whet your appetite for an Icelandic break we’d love to see you experience it yourself. If you’re feeling inspired, perhaps sample some perfectly cooked puffin in one of Reykjavík’s fantastic restaurants.

The Westman Islands are amon g Iceland’s most interesting spots, and flights from the mainland take just six minutes. Click here to start your very own Icelandic odyssey!

Yes, socks can now play lead roles in short films! For anyone interested in the eclectic combination of film making and socks, visit www.icelandsocks.com. Iceland’s low-fare airline, Iceland Express, offers a unique chance to make a short film on the web with pre-shot Icelandic footage with a host of funny sock hand puppets to play the lead roles.

Choose from a range of three pairs of socks, give them each a name and tailor their Icelandic trip to your desire. My film star socks Delilah and Rupert ventured to the icebergs at Jokulsarlon and then went wild in the urban cityscape of Reykjavík. Alternatively, take your socks for a relaxing soak in the Blue Lagoon and a romantic meal at an Icelandic restaurant or to watch the sunset at Thingvellir. Wherever it may be, time spent directing this film will surely be entertaining! You can even add subtitles to the footage to ignite a tone in your film - a tone which will more than likely be one of humour when looking at your leading characters!

Iceland has managed to top its previous acclaim in 2006 for being the ‘happiest place to live’ and has now been voted by the UN as being the ‘best country to live in’ and taken over the number one spot that Norway held for 6 years!

Now you may be asking yourself, why is Iceland the ‘best country to live in’, well read on and you’ll soon see why.

Iceland has something for everyone and the capital city Reykjavik with a population of 200,000 inhabitants is probably one of safest and cleanest cities in the world. The country has pollution-free air and water and it is unique in the sense that 72% of all energy used is renewable, clean and relatively inexpensive. Icelanders have a long life expectancy too due this clean and healthy environment which is enhanced by outdoor heated pools. Yes, you read that right. Research has shown that swimming outdoors in thermal, hot water, whilst at the same time breathing in clean, fresh air has a positive effect on the heart and respiratory system and with the numerous outdoor pools in Iceland, you'll never be far from this beneficial source. The cuisine plays a positive role in Icelandic lives too. Pure and natural Icelandic ingredients are used in the cooking and even the meat and dairy products are free from additives and growth hormones.

So, can you now see why Iceland has been voted the best country to live in? Perhaps go and see for yourself but be warned you may never want to leave!
