If you’ve ever travelled to Iceland or seen imagery of this incredible country you will undoubtedly have a strong appreciation of its breathtaking natural beauty and extraordinary diversity of landscapes. Understandably there is a need to protect these fragile natural environments and we are helping to do just that.

Over the years, we here at Discover the World have donated significant funds to conservation projects which underline our responsible attitude to tourism and this year is no different.

We are proud supporters of the Iceland Nature Conservation Association (INCA) which was established in May 1997. It is a conservation NGO, with the primary objective of conserving and protecting the wilderness of Iceland. From the outset, INCA's primary objective was to establish a national park in the highlands, which constitutes some 40% of Iceland's 100.000 square km. The Vatnajokull Glacier Park which encompasses some 15.000 square km of this area was established in June of this year - and is in fact the largest national park in Europe.

INCA has been heavily involved in a diverse range of projects from the debate on the sustainable and wise use of hydroelectric and geothermal resources to calling for a global moratorium on deep sea trawling in the high seas. INCA has also focused on the climate change issue from the outset.

We here at Discover the World are especially interested and supportive of INCA's work in respect of campaigning against whaling, an issue very close to our hearts. We were in fact the first company in the world to operate whale watching tours in Iceland and we believe quite simply that whales are much more valuable alive, in their natural habitat where they rightly belong.

At a time when there is a strong debate within the country we encourage our clients to make their views known locally, in a polite and coherent way.

If you would like to experience the beauty and magnificence of the wild marine life surrounding Iceland then look no further than our whale watching excursions.

Please also visit www.INCA.is if you would like to learn more about INCA’s conservation work in Iceland.

Therefore, the story goes Iceland must be in a hell of a state...this rarely shows what a pickle a country can get into when its three main banks go belly up! What these reports fail to reveal is that this great American institution insisted that all materials for their infamous Big Macs had to be imported from Germany and this meant that the far inferior ingredients became twice as expensive as a hamburger made from local produce (yes even tomatoes and lettuce are grown in Icelandic greenhouses - heated by natural geothermal energy!). There may well be a moral in this story!

Incidentally - Iceland did not implode after the financial disaster which befell it (honestly, I took my family there in August!), far from it - during the good times they invested sizeable sums of money wisely building a dynamic modern society whose population are the most literate in the world. Even before the 'Viking Bankers' they had an extremely good standard of living, built mainly on harnessing their natural resources such as fisheries and geothermal energy, which of course is still the basis of their economy. Even better, the devaluation of their currency means that a holiday to Iceland has never been better value for money. So if you have always wanted to go but thought it was too expensive take another look…it’s not cheap but one of the most beautiful countries in the world can now be explored without selling the family jewels - and this won't last forever!!

Take me there…

And for burger lovers out there, fear not, Iceland is home to a wealth of truly delicious food. Head to west Iceland and try Hotel Hraunsnef’s phenomenal burgers whose beef is sourced from the farm across the valley!

If you are familiar with this website I probably don’t need to tell you about all the fantastic things there are to see and do in this larger than life island. My reasons why Iceland makes the perfect destination for those who enjoy adventures on four wheels: out of the city the roads are traffic-free; roads sweep, twist, turn or disappear straight into the horizon; from the comfort of your own vehicle you’ll come across view after incredible view! That doesn’t mean you can’t stop and get out from time to time as you’ll no doubt want to get busy with your camera or stretch your legs with some walking amongst some fascinating scenery. And there are plenty of delightful places where you’ll want time to explore. On our short trip time was pretty limited so make sure you allow for a reasonably paced itinerary – our travel consultants will be able to advise you on this.

The end of summer is a great time for exploring the Icelandic countryside, especially as major attractions are that little less busy. Heading south out of Reykjavik on Road 1, we took in the iconic waterfalls, glaciers and black sand beaches which make this area so popular, especially with first-time visitors. Road 1 here is mostly flat, skirting around towering former sea cliffs and traversing wide open plains. This is definitely ‘Top Gear’ country – in fact the whole country is and it’s common knowledge that a certain Mr J. Clarkson has an affinity for this north Atlantic jewel.

Onwards and upwards – literally! The glorious East Fjords are blessed with picturesque fishing villages reached by mountain roads made up of a series of amazing switchbacks that wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. Fortunately there were plenty of places to stop and soak up all that amazing scenery.

We cut inland to Egilsstadir then west towards Lake Myvatn, experiencing an unpaved road through a vast, dry desert. The stark lavascape, edged by incredible mountains made it feel like we were driving on the moon. A 4WD vehicle is a must but you don’t need a big jeep – we had a Skoda Octavia which performed brilliantly plus it had plenty of luggage space! Whether driving on tarmac or unpaved roads, the ride was smooth, comfortable and the Octavia was spacious enough for four.

The long and definitely winding road tracing the shores of Lake Myvatn demonstrates just how enormous this piece of water is and there are plenty of interesting natural wonders to visit. From here it was off to Akureyri via Husavik on a rollercoaster of a road – great fun!

As ours was a rather quick business trip, countless fuel stations with the obligatory hamburger and hot dog offerings when filling up became rather tedious but the wonderful evening meals where we stayed overnight, more than made up for that! As soon as we were away from the pumps, the views and simple joy of driving soon got our minds back on track, albeit in places, a rugged track!

Fortunately our range of self-drive itineraries allow for a much more relaxed way of experiencing Iceland. Check them out here…

Last year my best mate and I went on what turned out to be one of my most memorable holidays - a 3 week exploration of Western Australia. This truly amazing destination offered unexpected diversity, incredible wildlife and some very interesting locals! Hiring a car in Perth we first spent a few days in the South West, enjoying the produce of the local vineyards at Margaret River, strolling all the way to the end (and back again) of Busselton Jetty - the southern hemisphere's longest wooden pier - and braving the magnificent Treetop Walk at Walpole (not easy when you're as scared of heights as I am!!)

But the best was yet to come as we followed the coast road north, taking in the fascinating Pinnacles at Nambung National Park and the resident dolphins of Monkey Mia. We were more intrigued by the humble dugong, which eventually put in an appearance for us at Shark Bay, but nothing could compare to our experience swimming with the whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef. I'll be honest, jumping into the ocean with the world's largest fish - growing up to 18 metres long, and did I mention it's a SHARK! - is pretty terrifying, but it's also an incredible experience. And once you accept that they really aren't going to mistake you for some tasty krill, you can start to relax and enjoy this great privilege. The whale sharks are only in the area from April until June, but Ningaloo Reef is spectacular year-round and offers great snorkelling opportunities with manta rays and turtles.

Other highlights of our trip included the vivid red gorges of Karijini, the unimaginable sunsets over Cable Beach and flying over the bizarre striped hills of the Bungle Bungles. The wild kanagaroos we encountered at Point D'Entrecasteaux, the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the endless outback stretching as far as the eye could see... You can find out more about Darwin's life and travels at the Natural History Museum's newly-opened Darwin Centre.

Of a completely different nature is the Antarctica-based film ‘Whiteout’ – the story of a serial killer on the loose in the Great White Continent! It might not make for a cosy autumn evening’s viewing and it’s not exactly an activity we'd recommend in Antarctica (!), but it’s still a rare chance to marvel at these incredible frozen landscapes before planning your own Antarctic adventure…

Popcorn anybody..?!

As the Icelandic Marine Research Institute scoured the ocean on a submarine expedition they found a new coral reef at Lonsdjup off Iceland‘s east coast which covers 40 square kilometres and is believed to be up to 500 metres below sea level.

As you may have probably guessed the ocean surrounding Iceland is not particularly warm thus it is a cold water coral reef and due to its depth it receives no sunlight and so obtains nutrition from ocean currents. All the coral reefs previously found around Iceland are all protected as nature reserves and they hope this new reef will be too.

This is a wonderful find for Iceland.

It all began during a trip to New Zealand, when I joined a guided tour from Stewart Island to the nature reserve of Ulva Island. My enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable guide pointed out a host of birds, taught me how to listen to the different birdsongs and shared with me the habits and quirks of each different species. Without her wealth of experience I would undoubtably have walked through the forest compltely oblivious to the abundance of life all around me.

Fast forward several years and I find myself on the back of an ice-strengthened vessel, crossing the Drake Passage en route to Antarctica. I'm joined here by a lovely English couple, avid birdwatchers, who patiently explain to me several times over the differences between the various species of albatross (black-browed, grey-headed, wandering) and petrels (painted, snow, Antarctic, storm) that follow in our wake.

I have to admit I still struggle to identify most species but I defy anyone not to be amazed by the sheer volume and diversity of the birdlife of the Southern Hemisphere. From the gaudy-coloured lorikeets and greedy pelicans of Australia, to the comical antics of Antarctica's many penguins, to the flightless kiwi and mischievous keas of New Zealand, there couldn't be a greater contrast to the common magpies that frequent my own back garden. And regardless of my total ignorance on the subject, it's the unique wildlife I find that always makes travelling such an adventure.

At first glimpse I caught site of Tetsuya's Restaurant, ranked as one of the top 20 restaurants in the world where one dines on Japanese and French influenced cuisine overlooking an exquisite Japanese garden. If that excites but leaves you desiring more then look no further than Berowra Waters Inn, set on the Hawkesbury River in secluded native bush and only accessible by boat or sea plane. For me this is dining at its best, a mini-adventure before the meal, a whirl wind sensory experience with cuisine, stunning views and the knowledge I am experiencing all this in a foreign land. But enough about food, that is my indulgence. Luxuriant spa’s, cocktails in an array of Sydney’s stunning locations and much more are just a click away…visit here

As the tide went out it was clear the whale was unlikely to be able to set itself free. So Icelanders, with their ever present hardiness and ingenious ways, set about trying to save this magnificent creature.

They went about tying a rope around the whale’s tail and after a 7 hour rescue mission, various vessels later and several attempts by the whale to drag the boats back to shore they managed to pull the Blue whale out to sea and in to Steingrimsfjord.

Why the whale decided to beach itself it unknown, but we can be happy in the knowledge it is now free and back in the wild where it rightly belongs.

If you would like to experience the beauty and magnificence of the wild marine life surrounding Iceland then look no further than our whale watching excursions. On a Friday night, when the bars are busy and restaurants full, it certainly appears that Icelanders have enjoyed this culture for centuries – as well as the cold lager that nearly everybody is drinking.

Yet despite this apparent normality, scratching beyond the surface reveals yet another example of Icelandic ingenuity. For beer was in fact prohibited in Iceland until 1989 – a result of an early temperance movement.

Some Icelandic ‘pubs’, though, sought ways around the bill by selling ‘fake beer’ – a mixture of high percentage, locally produced high-percentage Brennivin combined with non-alcohol pilsner. A bizarre concoction, it was perfectly legal and apparently it was a pleasant drop too!

Once the beer ban was lifted, Iceland’s brewers have created a host of premium lagers relying on imported malt and fresh, pure Icelandic water. The majority are entirely natural, free from chemical treatment, and as such leave any imbibers with a remarkable clear head the morning after!

To sample some of Iceland’s newest ‘premium’ product, make your own visit to Reykjavik and enjoy the café culture that has sprung up around this remarkable city. And with your clear head the morning after, take advantage of the thousands of natural delights that dot the country – from Gullfoss to geysers, the Blue Lagoon to volcanoes.

A new website,Free City Travel, aims to celebrate everything you can do in Reykjavik for free and offers suggestions to travellers looking for something different as well as those on a budget.

One of our favourites is the Culture House, situated in the heart of downtown Reykjavik which features a host of medieval manuscripts and historical Icelandic artifacts with free admission on Wednesdays.

Another is the Reykjavik Art Museum which, much like London’s Tate Modern, has converted a disused industrial space and turned it into a space for contemporary and intriguing art.

For the non-culture vultures,Perlan in the Reykjavik hills is an exciting destination. Built upon four huge water tanks, Perlan offers a fantastic view of the city from the 4th floor and for those a touch peckish there is an affordable cafe and a revolving restaurant.

So get out there and explore Reykjavik to your heart’s content and keep your wallet safely tucked away in your pocket!

Iceland is a gourmand's heaven, and as product manager for the 'Land of Ice and Fire', I was lucky enough to be on cloud 9 with some of the restaurants that I sampled during my last visit to Iceland. With fresh produce and imaginative chefs very much influencing the menu, Iceland is a country that values great food, locally sourced - at Hotel Arnanes in the South East, the salad travels only a matter of metres from the garden to your table!

One of my personal favourites is in the vibrant capital, Reykjavik. Buried in the backstreets near the imposing church Hallgrimskirkja is Thrir Frakkar (Three Coats), a family-run restaurant with an emphasis of fresh seafood cooked in a traditional Icelandic fashion.

For those special occasions, Humarhusid (The Lobster House) in the middle of Reykjavik occupies a beautifully restored old house right in the city centre, classically furnished with dark wood furniture and even paintings of fish on the ceiling. The speciality? Rather unsurprisingly, this is the best spot in Reykjavik for delicious lobster.

Hotel Ranga, a couple of hours from Reykjavik on the South Coast, has fantastic views overlooking the sweeping Ranga river. The cuisine, influenced by the hotel manager Bjorn Eriksson, was exquisite when I was there, with gorgeous Arctic char and vanilla cod followed by a dessert of local strawberries with a fresh syrup and champagne sorbet. Glorious.

Idavellir features among other delights an image of the remarkable ‘World Tree,’ the Ash of Yggdrasill. Depicting three wells – that of wisdom, fate and rot – the tree is intended as a warning of human frailty, and makes for a dramatic visual experience. The centre also houses a series of tapestries, which tell the tale of a very Norse interpretation of the beginning of the Earth, including Thor killing giants in their dozens.

Iceland has contributed a remarkable amount to the cultural world over the centuries, considering the isolated location and small size of the North Atlantic island. Today we may think of the seminal musicians Bjork and Sigur Ros, but the medieval Icelandic sagas are widely considered to be among the most important texts in the formation of what we now would consider literature. Njal’s Saga, in particular, is an epic to rival anything produced anywhere in the world.

As you might expect, Iceland’s other-worldly scenery has led to many a tale of equally fantastical occurrences – none more so than the ‘trolls’ that are said to inhabit Iceland.

To prove the point, in one half-day exploration of Flinders Chase National Park, on the western side of the island, we were privileged enough to see kangaroos, koalas, seals, sea-lions, ospreys and, to cap it all off, we even saw three Southern Right Whales from our viewing spot on the cliff-top! And whilst I am notoriously slow at spotting wallabies in the undergrowth, even I was eventually able to clock a few as they went about their daily business.

It was a great treat for me too, but if you're not keen on relaxing in the spa then you can also enjoy clifftop walks, fishing trips or simply kick back and enjoy the views over the Southern Ocean... Now however, the whole island will be put on the silver screen with the filming of an as-yet-untitled epic based on the dramatic, gory and downright bizarre Njal’s Saga.

Njal’s Saga is widely credited as being the best of Iceland’s fantastic medieval tales. Njal’s Saga tells the story of a series of vicious blood feuds during the Christian conversion of Iceland, the involvement of Icelanders in the vicious Battle of Clontarf just outside Dublin, and concludes with an uncharacteristically peaceful ending for the saga after the wanton (and sometimes comedic!) violence of the earlier chapters.

The film, to be directed by Iceland’s number one director Baltasar Kormakur, is set to cost in the region of $60m making it by far the most expensive film ever made in Iceland. It is a fitting tribute to the longevity of the sagas and their important place at the heart of Iceland’s cultural identity. The film is currently in production and due to be released some time in 2010 – definitely something to look forward to!

This was followed by a longer walk through the Valley of the Winds, a surprisingly lush, green oasis that contrasts brilliantly against the vivid red rocks and clear blue skies above.

This afternoon saw us embark on a trip to the region's undisputed key drawcard, Uluru (Ayers Rock). There are countless ways to view The Rock: on foot, by helicopter, by camel or even climbing it (still permitted, but strongly discouraged by the Aborgines, for whom Uluru is a place of huge spiritual importance). But we chose to travel in style on the back of a Harley Davidson! This really is such a fun way to explore - with an empty road in front, the wind in your face and a surprisingly comfortable saddle, we went just fast enough for a thrill but slowly enough to be able to take a few million more photos along the way (and let's face it, you can never have too many pictures of Uluru!). Definitely a top recommendation for putting a big smile on your face and for a whole new perspective on this iconic landmark.

The day finished with a fascinating guided walk around the base of Uluru - learning more about the stories and legends of the local Aborigines and the important part that the landscape plays. As the sun sets, the rock changes colour from a soft red to a glowing orange, so vivid it has to be seen to be believed. And then the show is over, we finish the champagne and head back to our luxurious accommodation at Voyages Longitude 131 for a gourmet dinner and an early night - well, it's up early tomorrow for another glorious sunrise over Uluru before we say farewell to the Red Centre and head south to Kangaroo Island.... More on that next time!

By Liz Lunnon, on location in Australia...

Just last week, blue and humpback whales where sighted on almost every whale watching voyage. You can read a report of one of those exciting days here, a blue whale frolicking alongside the boat in the extraordinary light of the midnight sun.

The blue whale is believed to be the largest animal ever to have existed, growing up to over 30 metres in length. To say the least – these are big mammals!

The humpback is positively diminutive compared to the blue whale, coming in at a “measly” 12-15 metres in length. However, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with dramatic leaps and acrobatic breaching, as well as a remarkable head covered in bumpy hair follicles. The sight is as arresting as the noise; when in season, a humpback whale may give off a whale song lasting a number of hours - it’s not quite tuneful enough for the X Factor but it’s certainly an incredible racket!

German photographer Thorsten Henn dutifully made his pilgrimage to the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ and was so taken with what he’d taken (excuse the pun!) that he has put together a fantastic, high-quality book entitled ‘Iceland Close-Up.’

Split into four parts, entitled Land, Water, Air and People, the book makes for a wonderful insight into Icelandic life. “Land” features some of Iceland’s greatest rock features, be they striking basalt formations or the lunar landscape of the lava fields, whilst “water” is a paean to Iceland’s stunning waterfalls and the majesty of the sea. “Air” is a selection of aerial photographs, allowing you to see the huge scale of Iceland’s incredible natural landscape, but the “people” featured in the fourth section are what makes the book great, with expressive images of Iceland’s hardy fishermen, urban trendsetters and political heavyweights alike. Some of the photographs can be seen at Thorsten Henn’s website and are published in the book for the first time.

Why not make your own photography voyage to Iceland’s remarkable scenery, or leave the camera at home and simply collect a host of unforgettable memories. From horse-riding through the gorgeous countryside to chilling out in the Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik with Thorsten’s trendy urban hipsters, you’ll never be shy of something extraordinary in Iceland.

As part of GMTV's Healthy Heart Week,’ they have sent it’s resident GP Dr Hillary Jones out to Iceland to look at how and why residents of the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ are so healthy, and why the quality of life is consistently placed in the top ten in the world. As Dr Hillary moves around Iceland, you can see why Icelanders like to get out in the outdoors. From swimming in the Blue Lagoon to wandering down the black sand beaches of Skedararsandur, there’s plenty of opportunities for the active amongst you. And having got some fresh air and had a good walk you’ll probably be hungry – so tuck into some of Iceland’s famously fresh fish and vegetables for that extra healthy burst. After all of that you’ll have definitely earned a guilt-free glass of wine in one of Reykjavik’s fabulous bars or cafes, and if your idea of exercise is dancing the night away then you’ve got plenty of trendy clubs to choose from – and there’s nothing better for dealing with the bleary-eyed morning after than a dip in the hot springs of the Blue Lagoon.

Travel to Iceland and reinvigorate body, mind and perhaps even your dancing shoes…

Before 1944, Iceland was a sovereign state under the control of the Danish King, but when Icelanders were given a vote in 1944 to decide their future they voted overwhelmingly to create the “Lythveldith Island” – the Republic of Iceland.

Icelanders are rightly proud of their culture and heritage, and today is the chance to celebrate the heroes of their independence movement, their cultural exports, and their incredible literary history embodied through the world-famous Icelandic sagas. Brass bands and musicians will today lead parades around Iceland’s major towns before children tuck into sweets and the adults enjoy a swig of Brennivin, Iceland’s rather pungent national drink.

Why not celebrate Iceland’s culture yourself with a trip to the ‘Land of Ice and Fire.’ Enjoy the traditional restaurants specialising in delicious fresh fish and lamb, explore the National Gallery, or simply marvel at the stunning scenery that served as a backdrop to the sagas.

Yet despite Bond's dramatic car chase across the frozen over lagoon, something even more dramatic is happening! The lagoon is fed by the Vatnajokull ice cap, one of the largest ice masses in the world and just a few days ago the tongue of the glacier which supplies Jokulsarlon has surged forward, filling the lagoon almost entirely with crevaces, ice sheets and gargantuan icebergs (see image). The icebergs are a regular occurrence on the lagoon, but very rarely to this extent. Indeed, the icebergs in the future may halt the operation of the sightseeing boats that cruise on the lake but never fear - Icelanders expect the unexpected, and have plans in place for glacial boat trips in an alternative lagoon. And, in July and August, we will begin sightseeing flights from the East coast town of Hofn that will take you over Jokulsarlon and the vast black sands of Skeidararsandur and up to the highest peaks of Vatnajokull; definitely an experience not to be missed!

The surge is just another example of the natural processes that continue to shape a most unique country - and Icelander's reaction to it just another example of their hardiness and preparedness in the face of an ever-changing and always exciting landscape. Click here to find out more.

There's never been a better time to explore Iceland's dramatic natural landscape.

If, like me you are looking forward to outdoor summer art events and would happily travel to experience the joys festivals bring then perhaps the Summer Art Festival in Akureyri in Iceland is just for you.

Akureyri in north-east Iceland is the largest town outside the capital region and is situated in a spectacular fjord. The location provides the perfect setting to enjoy the contrasts of the bustling town with the tranquillity of the spectacular fjordland. The Summer Art Festival runs from mid-June to the end of August and is ‘crawling with bohemians and art lovers during the festival’. However, if your summer is already planned out then fear not as Iceland is sure to satisfy any hungry artists’ desire throughout the year.

So get out there, explore your creativity, indulge your senses and return feeling inspired and full of wonderful memories.

I can now reveal that a British couple, travelling with Discover the World to Iceland recently captured on camera, for the first time ever, Iceland’s ‘Hidden People’.

Read on and hear it from Mr and Mrs Fanuci, the captors themselves!

‘I just couldn’t believe my eyes. As my husband and I walked through the Icelandic countryside absorbed by the incredible views we caught a glimpse of a unique looking gentleman. Having walked for hours in remote countryside with no one in sight we decided to head over to the curious looking man who then scurried behind a rock. My husband, overcome by intrigue ventured over whilst I held back with my camera just in case I needed to capture any evidence of some sort…you never know nowadays who or what you may come across! So as I stood there waiting, hoping my husband wasn’t in danger, the stranger hopped out again and appeared stunned. I quickly took a few snaps with my camera and beckoned my husband to come back. The gentleman fled and we returned to our hotel in disbelief at the afternoon’s occurrence. We showed the hotelier our photos who then confirmed that he was in fact one of Iceland’s ‘Hidden People’. Incredible’

Truly unbelievable, I say! I have been to Iceland countless times and have never encountered the ‘Hidden People’… sometimes it really is just beginners luck!

Some in our group popped on a couple of extra layers, others you could see had taken the advice more literally and had their jackets bulging.

Looking somewhat ‘Michelin-like’ we waited patiently. With a jolt our chair began to ascend – we’re off! And…we’re not! The chair stopped suddenly for the next couple. Then we were off again, briefly, until the next couple boarded and so on – no wonder the journey to the top of Abisko would take 20 minutes.

The sky, absolutely filled with stars, looked promising with just a hint of a green wash growing steadily stronger. We kept our eyes firmly on the goings on above our heads rather than below our feet since it remained light enough to see the ground dropping away.

For those of a nervous disposition or prone to sea-sickness, you may want to prepare yourself for an interesting ride. As the chairs continued upwards it was only the cold that kept our conversation away from discussing the rocking from side to side and bouncing up and down, each time the journey was interrupted.

At the half way platform the temperature dropped noticeably but thankfully by now, everyone had boarded and the journey continued relatively smoothly - just as well as the wind was beginning to cut into our faces. The second half of the ascent was particularly steep and the tiny flashing lights, secured to each chair before we set off, seemed to carry on forever.

It was bitterly cold at the summit, the kind of cold that when we took off your gloves to fumble for our cameras, turned our hands claw-like. The temperature, with the wind chill factor was given as -26°C. By now the northern lights were performing in all their glory. We had a green arc reaching across our heads and gigantic vertical curtains you could actually believe were blowing in the wind. There were waves of light, appearing, pulsing then bleeding into the night. Whichever way we turned, the lights were appearing in some way or another, the group ‘ooh-ing and arr-ing’ as if watching fireworks.

People were frantically trying to photograph the displays and were getting frustrated when they couldn’t. Some even used flash which just didn’t work – much better to simply enjoy the moment than to worry about taking pictures. Mother Nature’s own light show is incredibly difficult to photograph well, unless you are able to use a really long exposure and that generally requires a tripod. Besides, there are so many wonderful professional images available, buying a postcard or a book back at the hotel seemed like a good idea – and it meant we could keep our gloves on!

At the summit Sky Station, the little café provided a much-welcomed place to warm up and our guide happily chatted to anyone wanting to know more about the lights – apparently the best sighting they’ve had for ages. We felt very privileged.

The last chairs home were at midnight but some of us decided to head back down earlier. The continued glow in the sky meant we could see all the way down the side of the mountain and the lights of our accommodation in the distance. Although the first drop over the side took our breath away, we spent the rest of our time watching further glimpses of the aurora and excitedly discussing what we’d just witnessed.

On the walk back to the hotel the feeling returned to our fingers and we headed off to the bar to thaw out completely. It may have been cold and slightly uncomfortable at times but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

Iceland is Europe’s biggest banana producer.

There you go, I couldn’t believe it myself either but after a little research I can safely say that this is true. This unusual fact may sound completely unlikely for a country so far north but in the small town of Hveragerdi, production of the popular yellow fruit is thriving. The abundance of cheap, geothermal energy allows Icelanders to grow produce not typically found this close to the Arctic Circle.

Hveragerdi, also known as the greenhouse village, in southwestern Iceland is the country’s epicentre of gardening and horticulture. This rural setting is well known for its greenhouses which are heated by geothermal water from volcanic hot springs in the area. It‘s not just bananas that are grown here however, other fruit, vegetables and increasingly exotic flowers are being cultivated too.

So, if after that little slice of information you still don’t believe me, venture over to Hveragerdi and see it for yourself!

"It was a cold crisp morning at the ICEHOTEL and I was feeling sad that our trip to Lapland was coming to an end. However, we had one last part of our trip to experience which was the husky sledging and I couldn't wait!

We had an early start and got kitted out in our warm snow suits, hats and boots. We walked over to the frozen River Torne and all you could hear was the sound of a phenomenal 32 huskies howling and eager to set off for their morning run.

There were four of us on the sledge, all being pulled by 8 excited and beautiful dogs. We were taken over the frozen River Torne and through the snow covered forest, it was so quiet, all you could hear was the sound of the dog's feet running across the snow. It was truly magical and I couldn't imagine that I would be back in rainy England that evening.

We stopped off at a cosy warm log cabin and inside there was a roaring fire where we were given hot drinks to warm up and a slice of cake, it was just what we needed after being out in the cold."

I can honestly say that husky sledging in Swedish Lapland is an unforgettable experience and I would recommend it to anybody!

Perhaps at this time of year you aren’t keen on conjuring chilly thoughts but by doing just that you can reduce those toe and finger numbing trips to the supermarket.

The Frozen Food Federation has begun a new campaign TheNewIceAge.com to illustrate just how ‘convenient, beneficial and healthy’ frozen food can be. There are a whole host of advantages and by buying frozen food you instantly have fresh food available to you any day of the week meaning less time traipsing to the supermarket to get your daily evening meals. But why a giant ice wall to launch this interesting campaign? Well, symbolism is everything and the giant ice wall illustrates the many facets that the campaign is endeavoring to promote. The fruit, vegetables and seafood that were incased in the ice demonstrated the quality and freshness of frozen foods with the concept that you could strip away the ice and have instant fresh food. For those of you wishing to find out more and learn how frozen food can enhance your life click here.

Now don't go trying to preserve your favourite snack by sticking it in the ICEHOTEL...it just isn't the same!

To use solely adjectives in conveying my recent trip and experiences in Swedish Lapland would neither give justice nor illustrate the beauty that beholds this wondrous region. However, for the benefit of those yet to experience this stunning wilderness I will try my best to describe, for me, the magical and seemingly undiscovered fairyland.

Powdery white snow, glistening and sparkling while the trees are bright with white frosted branches… an image one can think that is conjured only from story books and mythical lands but I can assure you, this is true of Swedish Lapland. Combine this with cosy log fires and the grandeur and architectural brilliance of the ICEHOTEL and you’re transported into a true winter wonderland. To appreciate this incredible destination is inconceivable unless it is experienced first-hand, you cannot imagine the crisp clear air and the silence that envelops the forests in which not a sound arises as you stand there in awe of your unique surrounds. As for the skies, well, you can see from the photo adjacent, they were beautiful. Many of you, now noting the volume of snow in the photo are probably thinking of the chill factor, I can imagine that many are thinking frost bite, numb fingers etc etc but in fact you would be surprised. I am prone to feeling the cold, however, ironically during the trip I didn’t feel cold once...the key I suppose is being prepared (something I perhaps should remember!) and wearing the right clothes, of which the ICEHOTEL has plenty! On one occasion I actually felt hot, remarkable.

With activities abound I returned from Swedish Lapland incredibly excited about my next trip back! From the moment I boarded the plane to Kiruna to the flight home through pink fluffy clouds, I can safely say I enjoyed every moment. It is truly a special and unforgettable place.
