The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service warn Australians that user Silk Road and services like it “will not always remain anonymous and when caught, they will be prosecuted.”

Silk Road uses two cryptographic technologies to shield itself from law enforcement scrutiny. The site is only available on Tor, the cryptographic network, which disguises the source and destination of Internet traffic. Payments are only accepted using Bitcoin, a crypto currency whose peer-to-peer design makes it difficult for governments to regulate or monitor.

“Criminals are attempting to exploit the international mail system through online networks, but the recent arrest demonstrates that we are one step ahead of them,” said AFP official Peter Sykora. “The AFP will continue to identify, investigate and prosecute individuals or groups importing narcotics into Australia, including via illicit e-commerce platforms such as Silk Road.”

The press release doesn’t explain how Australian officials caught the suspect, who “was charged with 10 offenses relating to the importation, trafficking and possession of narcotics and prohibited weapons.” While the government tries to give the impression that it is monitoring transactions on Silk Road itself, it’s possible it caught the suspect through more traditional means.

This incident highlights the use of Bitcoin as the currency of choice for activities at the fringes of society. As it has been prove popular currency for pornography and gambling.

At the time, Larry Page wrote on Google’s blog:

“Many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine, and the impact of that transition will be profound–as will the ability to just tap and pay with your phone. That’s why it’s a great time to be in the mobile business, and why I’m confident Dennis and the team at Motorola will be creating the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives for years to come.”

At the time of the original acquisition, in August of last year, Google had commented on how Motorola would assist with completion by supercharging the Android ecosystem. Taking a close look at the SEC filing proves just how Google values Motorola’s assets.

-$5.5 billion –“intellectual property”

- $2.9 billion cash acquired

-$2.6 billion “goodwill ”

-$730 million “customer relationships”

$670 million “other net assets acquired.”

The SEC filings also explain how Google came to the magic number of $12.5 billion:

“Under the transaction, we acquired all outstanding common shares of Motorola for $40 per share and all vested Motorola stock options and restricted stock units, for a total purchase price of approximately $12.4 billion in cash.

In addition, we assumed $401 million of unvested Motorola stock options and restricted stock units, which will be recorded as stock-based compensation expense over the weighted-average remaining service periods of approximately 2.9 years. Transaction costs were approximately $50 million, which were recorded as general and administrative expense as incurred.

The fair value of assets acquired and liabilities assumed was based upon a preliminary valuation and our estimates and assumptions are subject to change within the measurement period. The primary areas of the purchase price that are not yet finalized are related to certain legal matters, income taxes, and residual goodwill.

Of the $12.4 billion total purchase price, $2.9 billion was cash acquired, $5.5 billion was attributed to patents and developed technology, $2.6 billion to goodwill, $730 million to customer relationships, and $670 million to other net assets acquired.”

Google has attributed “goodwill” to working relationships that will accompany the acquisition. In a statement

“The goodwill of $2.6 billion is primarily attributed to the synergies expected to arise after the acquisition. The amount of goodwill expected to be deductible for tax purposes is zero.”

Recently the Wall street Journal noted that Google is definitely bolstering is stable of patents, which could be seen as a measure of protection, as the top mobile innovators continue to sue each other.

If you can remember back that far, June 11, was the day of the Keynote address at Apple’s WWDC, where the latest updates were first announced. So if you are one of the lucky owners of one of those new machines Apple wants to ensure you are utilizing their newest OS.

Anyone who bought any Apple computer—either directly from Apple or through an Apple Authorized Reseller—after June 11 also qualifies. That includes iMacs, Mac Pros, or even Mac Minis that have not been updated recently but are currently available from the Apple Store.

In order to obtain your free copy of OS X 10.8, you have to submit a request through Apple’s Mountain Lion Up-to-Date page. After entering the details of where you bought your Mac and when, Apple asks for your contact information and your Mac’s serial number. Once you submit your claim and Apple verifies you in the system, Apple will send you a download code via e-mail where you can grab Mountain Lion from the App Store—no purchase required.

Happy downloading!

The malicious program shut down some of the facility’s automated processes and played the familiar rock anthem “thunder Struck,” by ACDC.

A scientist reach out to f-secure.com to publish information about Iranian nuclear systems getting struck by yet another cyber attack.

He wrote:

“I am writing you to inform you that our nuclear program has once again been compromised and attacked by a new worm with exploits, which have shut down our automation network at Natanz and another facility Fordo near Qom.

According to the email our cyber experts sent to our teams, they believe a hacker tool Metasploit was used. The hackers had access to our VPN. The automation network and Siemens hardware were attacked and shut down. I only know very little about these cyber issues, as I am scientist not a computer expert.

There was also some music playing randomly on several of the workstations during the middle of the night with the volume maxed out. I believe it was playing ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC.
I’m not sure what to think about this. We can’t confirm any of the details. However, we can confirm that the researcher was sending and receiving emails from within the AEOI.”

The rather vague wording of the email leaves a few unanswered questions as to just what parts of the AEOI are in danger, but one piece of information was very clear: The insidious software prompted several of the group’s computers to being playing the song Thunderstruck by AC/DC in the middle of the night, at full volume.

This isn’t the first time Iran has come under fire from cyber criminals, and it likely won’t be the last. But the attackers’ decision to play classic rock songs on infected computers is perhaps the most unorthodox way of alerting a nuclear facility that it has fallen victim.

It appears Google’s antitrust case will not go to trial, after reports from The European Union announced, Tuesday, that they had negotiated a settlement on what may amount to heavy restrictions , imposed transparency, and potentially a $4.0 billion fine.
Google has been under investigation since 2010, after European search companies alleged that Google was altering search results for competing products in the favor of Google, and not disclosing this bias.

While the conditions of the settlement are not yet known, based on the EU Commissioner’s comments earlier this summer; we can assume that Google will be asked to make concessions “in four areas,” or face years of litigation or fines. “Companies can be fined up to 10 percent of their turnover for breaching EU rules. In Google’s case, that could reach $4 billion based on its 2011 results,” Reuters reported.
While talks will continue “on a more technical level” to reach a settlement, the New York Times reported Antoine Colombani, a commission spokesman, as saying, “the commission considers Google’s proposals as a good basis for further talks and has now reached a good level of understanding.”
Google certainly enjoys a more significant share of the search market in Europe than it does in the United States—it controls about 90 percent of search in many large European markets, compared to the US where it only controls a little less than 70 percent of the market.
The (relatively) smaller market share hasn’t deterred US regulators though—a Senate subcommittee is also investigating Google’s “anticompetitive” practices, but the investigation is still underway.

Would being completely invulnerable to damage help? It’s currently possible, thanks to an exploit that’s spreading around the Internet.

in a comment made to battle net forum:

“We are currently rolling out a hotfix for a recent bug regarding invulnerable Wizards,” Blizzard said in the wee small hours of the morning. The developer urges players to formally report any exploitable bugs or hacks they may find.

Although Blizzard is currently rolling out a hotfix for the issue, there have been similar reports of a god-like exploit for the Barbarian class as well, Inspired by how soon this was fixed after it went public, one player has already shared an old Barbarian exploit which gives huge amounts of life leech, hoping Blizzard will act quickly.

. The method for the madness was posted on the Battlenet forums late last night, before apparently being removed by a moderator. We’ve kept the signal alive below, though, if you want to try it for yourself (or, if you don’t want to go to the trouble, YouTube poster Rumiah has a video of the exploit in action):

Step 1: Select Teleport – Fracture. Bind it to a key

Step 2: Select Archon, tested with Improved Archon

Step 3: Hover your mouse over or near your character

Step 4: Press Teleport

Step 5: QUICKLY(!)

Press Archon Forum goers aren’t taking kindly to the news, with many worrying that high-level loot earned by players using the exploit will soon start flooding the game’s auction houses. “Do you know how many wizards on soft and hardcore… are going to be cashing [in] on NEVER dying?” one player asked rhetorically. “The poor economy system of Diablo 3 is ruined,” writes another, while a third claims to have accumulated ten legendary items in one night of play. We’ve said in the past that the need for constant hot-fixed tweaks to character power is a sign that Diablo III wasn’t properly balanced at launch, but this is probably an exception to that rule. With Blizzard feverishly working on a patch right now, enjoy your invincible wizards while you can.

While the initial ban of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 has been upheld and extended to the entire European Union. Samsung’s redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 N was ruled sufficiently different to the Apple iPad, making it acceptable under competition law. But this is just one in a series of legal cases causing headaches for both companies and consumers.

The two technology giants are entangled in legal battles over dozens of patent disputes worldwide, struggling for dominance in the lucrative smartphone and tablet computing market. All told, the two companies have filed at least 30 lawsuits against one another. Most recently, Apple is demanding $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung for infringing on its patents, according to Apple’s latest filing in the ongoing patent dispute between the two tech giants. Samsung’s most recent case, set to be tried in Australia, is in response to Apple’s claim that Samsung lifted its iPad and iPhone design for tablets and phones, respectively. This cause has come under the scrutiny of local Australian Judge, commenting:

“Why on earth are these proceedings going ahead?” the Australian judge asked lawyers Monday, before calling the situation “ridiculous.” She then suggested that the cases should go to mediation.
Apple cast the first stone, in April of 2011, accusing Samsung of copying the design of its iPad and iPhone. Since then Samsung has, instead, focused on technology patents, claiming that Apple infringed upon patent EP1188269, which relates to a 3G technology used in the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and iPad 1 and 2. While, Apple was cleared of infringement charges on three patents, this latest ruling confirms infringement and marks the first victory for Samsung. The initial injunction placed on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, in November, prompted the most recent changes to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 N, which were deemed sufficiently different by German courts earlier last month. While, Apple quickly filed an appeal, two other courts in Germany, agreed with the decision, rejecting Apple’s request to impose a preliminary ban on sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1N and Nexus smartphone.

Understandably, Samsung was a bit more upbeat about this court decision.

“Samsung welcomes the court’s ruling which confirms our position that the Galaxy Tab 10.1N does not infringe Apple’s intellectual property and does not infringe laws against unfair competition,” said Samsung. “Should Apple continue to make legal claims based on such a generic design patent, design innovation and progress in the industry could be restricted.”

Nearly a month has passed since the Google introduced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. With the new OS’s source code being released a couple of weeks back, so it’s only natural for users to expect official Jelly Bean updates to be flowing.

However, as recent history has sadly shown us, the road from an OS update becoming open source to it actually hitting the most popular devices around is a very bumpy one. So it’s no wonder that we still (officially) know very little about the Jelly Bean upgrade timeframes.

Even the Galaxy S II, a runaway success on several carriers, didn’t receive its update to Android 4.0 until roughly seven months after the first Android 4.0 phone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, was issued. Factoring any lead time Samsung might have had with Android 4.0 as the manufacturer of the flagship device, the Galaxy S III’s path to 4.1 could be even longer and more arduous; Jelly Bean was officially released in June, alongside the Nexus 7 tablet.

HTC wouldn’t provide any indications as to timing, but said that phones on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Rogers will all receive the update. With the Galaxy S III’s Android 4.1 update in the works users can expect a release in late August or September.

The rumor suggests that Samsung will update the three Galaxy phones to Jelly Bean by August to September, and if accurate, then the year-end Android report might boast a 20 to 30 per cent Jelly Bean market share in addition to market share of the Nexus 7 tablet.

Announced Tuesday, the malware is affecting at least 800 computers throughout the Middle East and parts of central Asia.

Mahdi, which in Islam is roughly translates to Messiah has been targeting vulnerable companies, financial institutions, and government agencies, by stealing e-mails, passwords, computer files, and recording nearby conversations.

The malware can be identified by its unique delivery means, chiefly email attachments of a religious-themed PowerPoint written in English and Farsi, which include references to Moses, as well as an attached text file containing a November 2011 article from The Daily Beast entitled “Israel’s Secret Iran Attack Plan: Electronic Warfare,” and separately attached image (also in a text file) of what seems to be Jesus,

When the word of the malware surfaced many were quick to compare it to the Flame malware responsible for disrupting Iran’s nuclear program. However both companies identified significant differences between the two campaigns. For example, Mahdi, employed no zero-day vulnerabilities, exhibited amateur coding practices, and relied on the naiveté of its victims. Flame, by contrast, boasted world-class cryptographic breakthroughs and other hallmarks that could have come only from state-sponsored developers.

Moreover, Seculert pointed to the fact that the targets of the Mahdi had been critical infrastructures, which in general refers to services like power plants, water treatment facilities, public transportation and other utilities critical to organized municipal functioning.

Iran’s government has yet to respond to the reports, but earlier in June, the country’s intelligence minister accused the United States and Israel of deploying a new wave of malware against the country’s nuclear facilities, which had followed failed diplomatic talks on decreasing Iran’s nuclear program.

Mahdi has the ability to log keystrokes, capture screenshots, and pilfer any messages sent to or from Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Skype, or ICQ. It can also record audio that’s in the vicinity of the infected machine.

The researchers said an earlier variant communicated with a server located in Canada, but the server was located in Tehran, Iran.

In all, they identified more than 800 victims who communicated with four different servers over an eight-month period. Some of the communications used the Farsi language, and some of the dates were written in the format of the Persian calendar. Almost half of the infections—387 to be exact—hit Iran. Israel, Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia were also targeted with 54, 14, six, and four infections respectively. Seculert researchers said they’ve been tracking Mahdi for “several months,” as the espionage campaign is ongoing.

In the wake of Flame, and the related malware known as Duqu and Stuxnet, the disclosure of yet another piece of malware targeting critical systems in Iran and other Middle Eastern countries is sure to spark widespread intrigue. The lack of any conclusive evidence showing who’s behind it is sure to generate more curiosity in the coming weeks and months.

Good news for RIM, shortly after a $147 million fine for patent infringement the Blackberry maker has been granted a patent for a predictive text keyboard, which will be featured on its new BB10 operating system.

While predictive text has long been a part of smartphone typing, this would seem to take it a step further. According to a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trade Office, the new keyboard will predict not only what word you’re trying to type, but what word will come next, based on the context, and a database of common expressions.

“The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output,” said U.S. Patent No. 8,224,393. “The device … also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user.”

The patent is designed for use on a “reduced keyboard,” which includes two or three letters on one key, like phone-based keyboards, which require the double-tap to choose the exact letter.

While the technology is that impressive choosing to focus on simple frequency logic and auto-complete shortcuts (think “ttyl” generating “talk to you later”) rather than anything too complex, these are still quite important typing techniques.
