New Pediatric Surgeon Joins Florida Hospital for Children to Help Develop Destination Pediatric Surgery Program

ORLANDO, Fla., July 13, 2009 – Nationally recognized and well-respected pediatric surgeon, Dr. W. Raleigh Thompson, recently joined the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children as Medical Director of the Pediatric Surgical Program, to help develop it as a destination program with an emphasis on laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. He will also serve in a leadership and training role as Medical Director of Pediatric Surgery for the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement. Dr. Thompson joins Dr. Christopher Anderson and Dr. Bryan Weidner as part of the Advanced Pediatric Surgical Specialists practice in Florida Physicians Medical Group.

Specifically, Dr. Thompson will offer patient services such as general head, neck, thoracic and abdominal surgery; orchiopexy; pediatric surgical oncology; chest wall deformities; hernia/hydrocele repair and prenatal counseling.

Dr. Thompson completed his general surgery residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., in 1987 and his pediatric surgery fellowship at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., in 1990. During his career, he served at several Navy hospitals before beginning his tenure in Miami. Before joining the Florida Hospital team, he was an Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief for the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and was active at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Holtz Children’s Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital and Miami Children’s Hospital. Dr. Thompson is certified with the American Board of Surgery with specialty certification in pediatric surgery.

Dr. Eric R. Trumble Joins the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children as Director of Congenital Neurosurgery

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 5, 2009 – The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children welcomes Dr. Eric R. Trumble to its team, as director of Congenital Neurosurgery. This new position is unique, as he holds double-board certification (adult and pediatric neurosurgery) and has clinical experience to improve treatment in patients with congenital neurosurgical diseases regardless of age. His clinical interests in skull/craniofacial anomalies, neuro-oncology, epilepsy, vascular malformations and congenital brain and spine malformations, bring another level of expertise to Florida Hospital for Children.

Dr. Trumble graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, continuing his research in neurosciences at the National Institute of Health following graduation. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Virginia, and performed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Trumble’s formal training culminated with a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He is board-certified in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery, and devotes his career to the treatment of congenital neurosurgical diseases.

Besides serving as director of congenital neurosurgery at Florida Hospital for Children, Dr. Trumble was named vice chairman of the Department of Children’s Surgery for the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Spina Bifida Association, Dandy-Walker Alliance and Florida Hospital for Children Foundation. Finally, Dr. Trumble holds clinical appointments at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, Florida State University College of Medicine and Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Beloved Disney Characters Get Ready for New Roles at Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children

Walt Disney Imagineers are putting the finishing touches on a collection of beloved Disney characters that will lend their magic to the three-story lobby of the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children.

Known for the support and protection they provided their dearest friends, characters including Timon and Pumba from The Lion King, Baloo from "The Jungle Book" and Sebastian and Flounder from The Little Mermaid will have leading roles in the hospital’s interactive lobby.

"It is so rewarding to see the progress and development of this project, as we witness some of the stages of construction and see the elaborate characters that will soon grace the lobby," said Marla Silliman, administrator of Florida Hospital for Children. "Both Florida Hospital and Disney share a dream of creating a special place for children, and today we are one step closer to making that dream a reality."

Each character appears in its original, vibrant colors, as if stepping out of a classic Disney film. Designed by Imagineers, the life-size figures have a unique history of their own, with many of them first adorning Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom in 2005 during Disney’s Happiest Celebration on Earth, celebrating 50 years of Disney theme parks. Soon they will make their new home a place that has been caring for children for 100 years, offering them a warm and welcoming setting that will comfort even the smallest of patients.

We wanted to create an immersive environment that reflects the kind of care and attention that will be given to children and families during their hospital visit, said Imagineer Joni Van Buren, who helped sculpt several of the featured pieces. We hope that these faithful friends will provide a sense of comfort to those who need it most.

Construction and renovations are underway at Florida Hospital Orlando to accommodate the new residents and provide an immersive environment for pediatric patients and their families. The exterior shell of the facility is near completion and Walt Disney Imagineers are currently working on the interior to create the themed environments that will make the lobby come alive.

When the lobby is complete, children of all ages will be able to draw individual markings on a cave wall, generate jungle sounds on musical step pads, fish for virtual salmon or play in a magical world of popping bubbles and dancing sea horses. Each night as the sun sets, the lobby will transform into a celestial display, featuring constellations on the ceiling and a musical score created by the young patients. This captivating experience will allow children to use their imaginations to get lost in a world of magic and fantasy, ultimately evoking a healing environment and enhancing the patient experience.

The new dedicated lobby for the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is expected to open in early 2010. Construction and renovations will continue throughout the year, and by 2011, new units will open, with concepts, colors, sounds and themes inspired from the lobby applied throughout the entire children’s hospital.

"While everyone comes in through the lobby, we also want the same calming and reassuring atmosphere reflected throughout every unit in the hospital, said Tim Burrill, assistant administrator of Florida Hospital for Children. When kids and families come to our hospital, they will experience something different, and with the help of Disney, we are able to create an environment that will hopefully help improve the healing process for all pediatric patients."

This project is part of a $10 million contribution that Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Worldwide Outreach made to Florida Hospital in September 2007.

Sights and sounds in the Florida Hospital lobby recently resembled the start of a race, when Disney Children’s Hospital nursing staff cheered with enthusiasm, confetti-filled batons exploded and nurses dashed through the front doors of the hospital in running gear. This celebration represented the official kick-off of ‘Our Amazing Race,’ as Disney Children’s Hospital at Florida Hospital began its journey to becoming a global pacesetter by submitting its application for nursing magnet recognition, a prestigious distinction in nursing excellence.
The theme of the event, ‘Our Amazing Race,’ will continue during the two-year approval process to keep nursing staff energized and motivated as they undergo a rigorous evaluation, including extensive interviews and observation of overall performance.
“Running a children’s hospital is a team sport,” said Florida Hospital Chief Operating Officer Brian Paradis. “This commitment to the community will change the way healthcare is delivered in Central Florida.”
Disney Children’s Hospital would be the only hospital in Central Florida to hold the magnet accreditation, which is only awarded to four percent of hospitals in the country.
Nursing magnet status is a highly coveted certification from the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize health care organizations that exhibit the best quality of care in nursing, demonstrate a high level of job satisfaction, deliver exceptional patient outcomes and adhere to national standards for nursing services. Magnet recognition ensures benefits for nurses, including improved job satisfaction and greater autonomy in practice; benefits for physicians, including enhanced patient interest in magnet hospitals and greater assurance of quality care; and benefits for patients, including shortened length of stay and increased satisfaction.
Disney Children’s Hospital is a 155-specialty-bed, full-service facility served by nearly 60 Kids’
Docs, the largest panel of pediatric specialists in Orlando and a highly trained pediatric team of more than 600 employees.
