Review: Roaring Fork at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

You know how much we love the food at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge around here. All of the restaurants here — Whispering Canyon Cafe, Artist Point, and even Territory Lounge — offer incredible food in unique settings.

But despite my many trips to Roaring Fork, I just realized I’ve never put together a full review for you guys!

Located conveniently mere steps away from both the lobby of the hotel, as well as the pool area, Roaring Fork is a great place to grab a quick meal or snack on the go as you head out for a swim or to the parks.

Atmosphere

Entering into Roaring Fork, you get that same Pacific Northwest Territory adventure vibe present all around Wilderness Lodge, with more of a hint of the rustic here.

It’s awesome how the signage around Wilderness Lodge has a sense of flow to it. You really do feel like you could go outside and hop into a white water raft, bound for some rapids!

There’s an abbreviated menu board located outside so you can tell at a glance if the selections here will appeal to you.

One thing to note about Roaring Fork is the fairly small inside seating area. There are more tables outside near the pool deck, however. And I’ve never had a problem securing a table. (Sometimes it’s fun to take your food out to the beach and have a picnic, too!)

Because Wilderness Lodge is surrounded by lots of water and forest, you probably are a little more prone to see natural wildlife here. Friendly reminders on the outdoor tables caution you against sharing your meal with the birds…or the occasional warthog. (That churro cracks me up.)

Time to head in and explore our options!

Eats

Much like the dining area, the restaurant service area is quite small. But it really isn’t small on options and unique goodies. This is one of those awesome spots that offers some truly one-of-a-kind goodies on Disney property.

This teeny tiny menu gives you the lowdown on what you can get all day at a glance. Don’t worry; I have bigger versions of the lunch and dinner menu! But just in case you wondered about breakfast — and you’ve heard about those amazing specialty Mickey waffles! — I wanted you to see the morning offerings.

We were here for lunch, however, so we were choosing from the combination lunch and dinner menu. The first board featured an array of Sandwiches, Salads, Pasta, and Kids’ Meals. There were a couple of hot items to choose from here, but most of the choices on this board were cold.

On the next menu board, there offerings from the grill as well as Flatbreads and other hot items.

Note that there are different serving times for the various categories of food. Most of the items on the first board are only available until 10 p.m. Grilled items are available until 11 p.m., and flatbreads can be ordered here until midnight.

There were a couple of display sandwiches in the case, so you could see what you were getting before you ordered.

There was also a plate that displayed options available as side items for the Kids’ Meals. I personally love these visual aids. I think it’s a really great way to help guests see their options and it’s especially helpful when you’re trying to help kids choose.

The menu also featured a Pasta Creation of the Day and a Chef’s Flatbread of the Day. Boards describing your choices for these items are displayed separately.

The pasta sounded pretty tasty — Pasta with Sausage and Creamy Marinara Sauce.

The chef’s flatbread did as well — a Veggie Pesto Flatbread with Mozzarella and Parmesan Cheese. I think this would make an excellent vegetarian option. But I had something with a little more red meat in mind…

There are no fancy self-serve kiosks here, like you’ll find at Contempo Cafe (check out their ordering process here) or Captain Cook’s Snack Company (you’ll find a lots of pics of their kiosks here).

Nope, you order here the old-fashioned way: you step up to one of the two counters and tell the human person there what you would like from the menu board above their heads. And they magically make it right before your eyes.

Sandwiches are freshly made to order — something I always appreciate, even if it does require a little waiting. That means you can make sure than any dietary needs or picky eater concerns are attended to.

While you’re awaiting your order, you can have a look around at what else is available. Admittedly, the space doesn’t flow very well, but it’s normally not very busy, especially in the middle of the day.

To the right of the ordering counters, you’ll find a selection of self-serve soups. On the day we visited you could choose from Minestrone or Roaring Fork Chili.

They’re available for a Disney Dining Plan snack credit, which is pretty awesome, since they could easily make light meals.

Beyond the soups, you’ll also find the bakery case — one of my favorite stops! For this, my friends, is where you’ll find DFB favorites like the Carrot Cake and S’mores Cupcakes, as well as the Magic Cookie Bar.

Other delicious looking pastries, cookies, and brownies are also available.

To the left of the ordering counter, you’ll find additional cold grab and go selections sharing space with some bottled beverages, including beer and wine.

Another fridge houses bottled water, energy drinks, soda, and lemonade.

Kids’ items are neatly displayed beneath a cooler with some other grab and go options.

A stand in the middle of the space offers up an assortment of items, ranging from breakfast cereal and fresh fruit to wine, chips, fresh fruit, and Mickey krispie treats.

And if you need an ice pop or Mickey ice cream bar or sandwich fix, you’ll find those here, too.

This handy placard provides a quick reminder about what items are covered under the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan.

Once you’ve made your selections and you have your food, proceed to the check out area where the cashier will tally your bill and provide you with cups. Pay, and you’re on your way to the next station.

Even though the space is small, the seating area actually contains two microwaves, in addition to the standard toaster. These are super handy for heating up items that you’ve brought with you, or toasting your bagel or bread.

You’ll also find an assortment of jams, jellies, and peanut butter.

A Fixings Bar provides additional toppings for your entree. There are also lemon wedges here for drinks.

Salad dressings, sauces, and standard condiments are displayed in a neat and orderly fashion.

A self-serve beverage station ensures that you have access to a set of standard beverages. This is also your stop for refilling your refillable souvenir mugs during your stay.

Standard Nescafe coffee is available, as is iced tea, and you’ll find creamer in a dispenser. There are no gourmet coffees available here…yet! And we expect the Nescafe to be gone soon, if it isn’t already.

Hot chocolate and a standard selection of Twinings tea are also provided.

After I chose my drink, I was ready to sit down and enjoy my selection.

Of all the menu items, the sandwich that really stood out was the Roast Beef and Blue Cheese. All of the sandwiches on this portion of the menu board could be ordered with a side of Cucumber Salad or House-made Chips.

You know how much I love Wilderness Lodge’s house-made chips. So I’m pretty sure you can guess which one I chose! (Now, if I could just have gotten my hands on some Truffle Aioli…)

Roast Beef and Blue Sandwich

And I have to tell you — this sandwich was pretty incredible. A generous portion of sliced roast beef is topped with tons of crumbled blue cheese. There’s a bed of lettuce in there to give it a little texture, and the bread is tender focaccia.

The only way this could have been any better is if they had pressed it under the panini iron for a couple of minutes.

Next came dessert! I decided to go with two options — one for now, and one for later (“later” being five minutes later…as I got into the car to drive back to my resort).

So by now, we know each other well enough that you get my carrot cake obsession. I love it! And the Carrot Cake Cupcake here is one of the best examples of this dessert anywhere at Disney.

It’s not flashy, and doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles or fancy fillings. It’s just classic, moist carrot cake, topped with rich, creamy, smooth cream cheese frosting. And lots of it. Which is probably the kicker for me.

I also think the garnish of candied carrot shreds is pretty interesting, although they looked a little different this time — more dehydrated than soaked in sugar syrup. Still, this was awesome, and it’s totally worth a trip to Wilderness Lodge if you love carrot cake like I love carrot cake.

I also snagged a Magic Cookie Bar, which I saved for later (the aforementioned car trip).

When I first tried this killer bar cookie after tips from DFB readers sent me looking for it, I couldn’t wait to share it with you! (We even gave you a recipe in case you wanted to make some at home.) But it’s so good that it’s worth showing you again.

A graham cracker crust is layered with coconut, nuts, chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips before the whole thing is smooshed together and baked.

The result is a rich, chewy cookie bar that is so much better than the sum of its parts. Really. These are incredible! And the sprinkles give it a nice little pop of color.

This was a super satisfying meal, and dining outside at Wilderness Lodge among the beautiful pine trees and view of the lake was a perfect escape from the bustle of the parks.

Overall

I know I’m repeating myself, but I just love Wilderness Lodge. It’s such a gorgeous hotel anyway, but then you add in all of the fantastic restaurants, and it is just such a special place to visit. Really, I think I could probably spend an entire Disney visit just exploring the menus at this hotel. And even Roaring Fork, with its “we aim to please” menu, offers some delicious and unique items.

If you are looking for a place to escape the madness of Magic Kingdom for a quiet lunch, I urge you to skip the monorail queue and head straight for the boat that takes you to Wilderness Lodge. It may be just a boat ride away, but you’ll feel like you’re in another world.

Monstrous Summer Specialty Foods Available at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts

Kicking off a “Monstrous Summer” at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the creative Disney chefs have designed special eats for the Monstrous Summer all-nighter scheduled for May 24-May 25, 2013!

Mike and Sully on Spaceship Earth announce the Monstrous Summer All-Nighter!

The event, which takes place at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World on the East coast, and Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure on the West coast, will host guests from 6 a.m. on May 24 to 6 a.m. on May 25.

As always, Disney has planned a few special bites for the special event. Here are a few of the noshes planned!

Walt Disney World Monstrous Summer Food

Crazed about Disney cupcakes? The New Fantasyland venue Gaston’s Tavern (Magic Kingdom) will feature a chocolate cupcake topped with “Monsters University” sweets.

Ice cream fans can stop by the Ice Cream Parlor or Plaza Restaurant on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom for an “Eye Scream Sundae” in your choice of mint chocolate chip or strawberry flavors.

Themed drinks, including Randall’s Suds and Mike’s Punch — will be offered at The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland.

Keep your eyes open! There are monstrous eats everywhere. Start with steak and eggs for breakfast at the Carnation Cafe. Or venture to Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port for breakfast pizza with eggs, chorizo, roasted tomatillos, mozzarella, and pico de gallo. The Bananas Foster French Toast at Cafe Orleans would be our decadent choice!

Later in the day, Blue Bayou adds a roasted bourbon shrimp stuffed with Dungeness crab mousse served with spinach, pasta, and smoked tomato-habanero-artichoke sauce.

Morning goodies at Disney California Adventure park will include: a Wine Country breakfast with scrambled eggs, herbed potatoes, biscuit, bacon or sausage, and fruit at Wine Country Trattoria; or a spinach frittata made with egg whites.

Later in the day, a Monster Nacho Dog can be found at Award Weiners at Disney California Adventure. Or how about the mac-and-cheese flatbread pizza with sun-dried tomato pesto at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, or the Monstrous Open-Face Turkey Sandwich at Flo’s V-8 Café. It’s a brioche piled high with turkey and topped with gravy, with cranberry marmalade on the side.

Keep up your energy with the return of potstickers at Lucky Fortune Cookery, or venture over to the Pacific Wharf Café for a loaded baked potato soup in a fresh sourdough bread bowl. Both are hearty choices!

Snack Series: Frozen Cheesecake On A Stick at Disneyland Resort

OK, you guys. Frozen. Cheesecake.

We first told you about this fantastic little Gelato Bars kiosk in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney last year. And, well…you know I can’t resist some good gelato! So I couldn’t wait to hit it up on my recent trip to Disneyland.

When it first appeared, there was a pretty extensive menu of Gelato Bars, consisting of fabulous flavors and garnishes. These days, the gelato bar selection has been pared down to five varieties.

But before you become too sad about that — look at what they’ve added: Frozen Cheesecake! On. A. Stick.

There’s also a selection of Hot Chocolates (complete with hot chocolate on a stick) as well as a Gelato Cookie Sandwich (!) and a Frozen Banana dipped in Ghirardelli Chocolate. A selection of bottled beverages rounds out the menu.

But that’s not all there is to tell you about this spot. As seems to be the standard in Disneyland, there are little “models” of the food selections! I think the “bedazzled” Birthday Cake one is my favorite.

Here are the examples of the cheesecake bars, which are available plain or with a strawberry garnish. The hot chocolate on a stick is represented, too.

But my mind was already made up, and I went for one cheesecake bar. Strawberry, please.

And I know what you’re thinking: “AJ, that’s as hard as a rock and you’re gonna break your teeth.”

I thought so, too; and I was worried. But that wasn’t the case! I was shocked to realize that it wasn’t frozen solid (maybe that has something to do with all of the fat in that cheesecake! ;-D), and it was surprisingly easy to bite into the creamy cheesecake.

The slice was a huge portion, and I was very happy that they hadn’t skipped a thick graham cracker crust.

My take? This was absolutely delicious. One of those things that I don’t truly enjoy enough while I’ve got it, so I have to sit here and crave another one on my next trip to Disneyland!

As for the gelato bars, they will have to wait for another day, but I love this as an option! It’s just different enough to catch my interest. And in a surprising move, the price has actually decreased since the time the cart debuted. No telling if this is a seasonal change, or if it will stay that way. But for now, it’s a pretty cool trend to note!

Nestled inside the pyramid at the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot, La Cava del Tequila is one of our favorite hang-outs in Walt Disney World.

This place is well known for awesome margaritas, a relaxing atmosphere, and my very favorite queso in all the land!

And it looks like more unique fun may be on the horizon at La Cava.

Making Advance Dining Reservations is an absolute must when it comes to planning.

While many seasoned Disney travelers are aware of this, there are lots of folks who visit the parks and are stunned to find no tables available at their top restaurant choices. Don’t worry, it happens to all of us at one time or another…and we’ve got solutions for you!

Today, we’ve updated our list of the most popular Disney restaurants, and terrific alternatives if you can’t score a table at your coveted spot!

Let’s take a look at the most elusive restaurants to book these days…

Dinner at Be Our Guest Restaurant

Scoring an advance dining reservation at Be Our Guest Restaurant for their table service dinner can be a daunting task.

From the time that they first announced the restaurant’s soft opening until now, we have heard from many readers who haven’t been able to secure a spot at Magic Kingdom’s newest restaurant. Here are a couple of reasons why:

Newness: The biggest reason for this remains the novelty of the place. Be Our Guest and all of New Fantasyland is still the hottest ticket in Walt Disney World since its grand opening in December 2012.

Incredible, Immersive Themeing: The impeccable themeing means that stepping into Beast’s Castle is truly like climbing through a portal into Beauty and the Beast. You almost expect to look down and find your food animated!

The Grey Stuff -- It's Delicious!

Novelty: The French-inspired cuisine that’s served at Be Our Guest is unlike anything else available in all of Magic Kingdom. In addition, there is huge novelty surrounding the fact that you can now order beer and wine in the formerly dry Magic Kingdom (for dinner only).

So, what to do if you can’t get a reservation at Be Our Guest?

Alternatives:
How about these options instead…

Lunch at Be Our Guest: This one’s easy! Go to the restaurant for a lunch experience. The meals at lunch are counter service and don’t require reservations, so anyone can get in on any day! Plus, I actually like the food better at lunch than at dinner…and it’s significantly less expensive.
The best part: ordering your lunch here secures you a spot to roam and explore the Beast’s Castle to your heart’s content, which means you can check out all three dining rooms. At the moment, the Rose Gallery Dining room is often closed during dinner, so lunch is the best time to see the whole castle.

Currently, lines can be long to get in (head over around 10:30am or after 2pm to avoid the worst of the lunch crowds); but with Disney experimenting with FastPass options for Be Our Guest lunches, things may change soon.

Cinderella’s Royal Table: Another option (although it’s very popular as well) is Cinderella’s Royal Table. This restaurant also gives guests that feeling of dining in a castle among royalty. And we’re thinking that with the added capacity that Be Our Guest provides, securing other sought-after reservations just might be a little easier.

Another hot ticket in Disney World are character dining experiences. While there are many to choose from, a few in particular are extremely popular, and therefore are much harder to book.

Some of the most difficult tables to get are Chef Mickey’s, featuring the Fab Five characters — Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto; Cinderella’s Royal Table, home to Cinderella and her Princess friends; Crystal Palace, where you’ll find Winnie the Pooh characters; and Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, another spot for Disney Princesses.

While getting this reservation can be difficult, there are several reasons that we think you should persevere and book a character dining experience:

No Waiting in Character Autograph Lines: Rather than wait in line after line in the parks (and hope your wait doesn’t include a break time for the character), the characters come to you! And often, they’ll make the dining room rounds more than once, which provides plenty of time to capture that cute photo op.

Get Lots of Character Autographs at Once: And it’s not just one character. All of the character dining options feature lots of characters at the same time, so you’re sure to mark many of your must-have encounters off your list all at once.

Climate Control: One of the biggest draws to character dining is the comfy atmosphere. Usually, character autographs come only after a long wait in the hot Florida sun. But a character dining experience takes away that discomfort. That’s right — we’re talking air conditioning! Meeting Mickey where it’s nice and cool, versus sweltering and sunny, can make for a more relaxed experience.

Special Access to Parks: When you make your reservation before the theme park where the restaurant is located opens, you have the added bonus of entering the park ahead of the crowds. This makes for some really special photo ops, too, and will put you ahead of the game in terms of ride waits and Fast Passes!

Disney Multitasking: Eating + seeing characters = accomplishing two important Disney to-dos at the same time! This is a great way to maximize your time while still enjoying your vacation!

Alternatives:
But what if your favorites are booked? Fortunately, there are lots more character dining experiences to choose from. If the above restaurants are already full, you still have options.

Cape May Cafe: Cape May Cafe at Disney’s Beach Club Resort also features some of your kiddo’s favorite characters, like Goofy, Donald, and Minnie. Plus, it’s a MUCH easier reservation to get.

Tusker House: Check out Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom for breakfast or lunch, where Mickey and friends are dressed in cute safari gear!

‘Ohana: This relaxed restaurant at the Polynesian Resort has one of the best views in Disney World, and it also happens to offer an awesome character breakfast meal. Meet Mickey, Pluto, Lilo, and Stitch at ‘Ohana, and enjoy a platter full of goodies (including Mickey Waffles) with your family while you gaze out at Seven Seas Lagoon and Cinderella Castle!

1900 Park Fare: 1900 Park Fare in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort has a fun assortment of characters, ranging from Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland to Winnie the Pooh. For dinner, you’ll have the opportunity to meet Cinderella, her step-sisters and step-mother (one of the only Disney World character meals where you’ll find a villain!), and even Prince Charming!

Hollywood and Vine: And for the preschool set, a trip to Hollywood and Vine in Disney’s Hollywood Studios for breakfast or lunch means they’ll get to Play n’ Dine with their favorite Disney Junior pals!

Le Cellier Steakhouse

For years now, Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot’s Canada Pavilion has been one of the hottest reservations for lunch as well as dinner.

But try to score a table by walking up to the podium, and you will normally be turned away. There are a few reasons for this, we believe:

Reputation: Word-of-mouth has made Le Cellier a legend in Disney fan circles. It rarely gets a bad review, and many book a table just to find out the reason behind all the raves.

Size: This is an astonishingly tiny restaurant, which means there are few reservations to go around.

Quality: Both food and service are excellent here, with many menu items taking on “cult favorite” status.

In recent years, however, a few things have changed. Dinner became a signature meal in 2011, and in 2012, lunch followed suit. (Read our review of the signature lunch experience here.) That means that eating here will set you back quite a bit, even in the middle of the day.

We’ve been wondering if upping Le Cellier’s posh and price factor might mean that more tables become available. And with new restaurants and dining experiences opening throughout World Showcase — La Hacienda de San Angel for dinner, Les Halles for counter service meals and snacks, and coming soon, Spice Road Table in Morocco for small plates and other refreshments — snagging a table here may prove to be easier than it has been in the recent past.

Alternatives:
But what happens if you can’t score that elusive Le Cellier table? While I certainly love Le Cellier, I have to be honest here and say that there are as good — or better — steaks to be had at Disney. If it’s beef that you’re craving, consider one of the following:

Shula’s Steakhouse: Head to Shula’s at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort when you are looking for the quintessential steakhouse experience, complete with classic dishes and masculine ambiance.

Yachtsman Steakhouse: Yachtsman Steahouse at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort offers steaks in a breezy, nautical setting that are served alongside seasonally-inspired sides.

Flying Fish Cafe: One of my favorite Disney restaurants is Flying Fish Cafe at the BoardWalk Inn. It’s the perfect place for surf and turf, but I always order the perfectly done steak.

Bull and Bear Steakhouse: Want to take dining to the heights of something really memorable and special? Then head over to Bull and Bear Steakhouse at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. This incredible restaurant offers the pinnacle of opulent steakhouse dining.

Kona Cafe: If you’re on the Dining Plan and would prefer a meal that will only set you back one table service credit instead of two, consider having your steak at Kona Cafe in Disney’s Polynesian Resort. We’ll also give an honorable mention shout out to steaks at The Wave…of American Flavors at Disney’s Contemporary Resort as well.

Victoria and Albert’s

Most guests who visit Disney World enjoy taking in some of the premium dining options around the resort, like signature restaurants and dinner shows. But the popularity of the two can mean frustration when it comes time for booking reservations.

If you aren’t up early 180 days before your trip, you’ll have slim chances of securing a table at hotspots like California Grill and Victoria and Albert’s. Why is it so hard to get into these coveted restaurants?

Small Number of Tables: Victoria and Albert’s boasts the most exclusive dining experience on Disney property — and the one place where children under 10 are not permitted to dine. The intimate setting has a very limited number of tables, and two seatings per night (only one seating each evening is available at the chef’s table). This means there are fewer tables to go around for guests who would like to experience V&A opulence.

At California Grill, the popularity of watching the Wishes Fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom from one of the coveted window tables means booking in advance is required.

A Long (and Well-Deserved) Reputation for Quality: Both Victoria and Albert’s and California Grill have been at the top of the Disney Dining heap for a very long time — and they have the awards to prove it. Both restaurants are recognized by both guests and critics as fantastic.

A Lengthy Renovation: It’s about to get even harder to secure a table at California Grill. The Contemporary Resort’s most famous restaurant has been closed since January for a menu redesign. When it opens, resort guests and loyal locals will be clamoring to see all that’s new here.

Offering some of the most wonderful food that can be found at Disney, California Grill and Victoria and Albert’s both focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients and an often-changing menu. But if you can’t secure reservations for them, there are still some spectacular meals at other signature restaurants that I have found to be as good as these two.

Alternatives:
Securing advance dining reservations can be easier at some of my other favorite signature dining spots around the resort:

Jiko: Located off the beaten path at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jiko offers authentic flavors of the diverse cuisine of African countries, as well as the most extensive collection of African wines outside of the continent.

Head to Jiko for an easier reservation and an incredible meal

Citricos: If you’re looking for something a little closer to the monorail line, check out the fresh cuisine of Citricos. Located at the Grand Floridian, the emphasis here is on the fresh food of Florida with a Mediterranean influence.

Artist Point: Seasonal offerings celebrate the bounty of the Pacific Northwest at Artist Point in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, with a menu that includes game and fish that you would find in that region. The wine list boasts many of the area’s best offerings as well. Service here is relaxed, yet refined.

Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue

Alternatively, are you after dinner and a show? Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort will fit the bill nicely. Be ready to exercise flexibility for this one too, however.

The performances are just as sought after as they have always been for a few reasons, we think:

History: Hoop Dee Doo has been delighting crowds with its fun “hootenanny” since the very earliest days of Walt Disney World’s history.

Fun for All Ages: A show here is truly a family affair. Kids of all ages will enjoy the music, dancing, and interaction.

Great Food: Unlimited supplies of picnic favorites like barbecue ribs and fried chicken are crowd pleasers, and grown ups can have their fill of beer, sangria, and wine as well. And don’t forget the strawberry shortcake — delish!

Alternatives:
Wondering what to do if you aren’t successful in attempts to book the show? Well, truthfully, there’s really nothing that can exactly substitute for the fun that is Hoop Dee Doo. But depending on whether you’re after the down-home food they serve, or the raucous good time, you might be able to come close.

Trail’s End: For food, head to Ft. Wilderness Campground’s table service restaurant, Trail’s End. Their buffet dinner offers many of the same items that you’d be feasting on at Hoop Dee Doo, and the rustic surroundings convince you that you really have stumbled in from the range. And of course, be sure to mosey over to Chip n Dale’s Campfire, also at the Fort, for some s’mores, a free movie, and a sing along!

Whispering Canyon Cafe: If it’s crazy good times you’re after, check out Whispering Canyon Cafe at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. The food is hearty, and the antics of the staff — especially during the dinner hour — will keep you in stitches.

River Roost Lounge Featuring Ye-Haa Bob: Is it music with a vaudevillian slant that you’re looking for? Pop over to the River Roost Lounge at Port Orleans Riverside Resort and catch Ye-Haa Bob’s show! This Disney legend will have you howling!

Rose and Crown Restaurant and Other Fireworks Viewing Hotspots

Looking to enrich your fireworks experience by adding dinner to the ticket? Then you’ll probably want to try for a table at California Grill in the Contemporary Resort or ‘Ohana at the Polynesian to watch Magic Kingdom’s Wishes, or maybe to Rose and Crown Pub and Dining Room in Epcot for a premium view of Illuminations at Epcot.

But these aren’t surefire bets, either, for a few reasons:

Be Prepared to Wait and Wait: Scoring the right table at a fireworks hotspot can mean waiting an hour or more for a table to open up…even if you have a reservation (nope, Disney cast members aren’t able to reserve a particular table for you when you make your dining reservation). Is your party up for that?

No Guarantee Even With a Reservation: Not only are these difficult reservations to obtain, but once you’re in the door on your chosen night there’s no assurance that you’ll have a window view at ‘Ohana or a coveted “just right” patio spot at Rose and Crown. It pays to have an alternative in your back pocket if this is a memory you’re looking to make.

What’s a good plan B?

Alternatives:
For other fireworks viewing and dining combos, we have a couple of favorites other favorites when our first choice isn’t available.

Narcoossee’s: One of our very favorite spots is Narcoossee’s. The charming restaurant at the Grand Floridian offers incredible views from its dock location, and the wraparound windows give everyone in the restaurant a good Wishes viewing spot.

The Polynesian Resort’s Beach: For a less expensive option, grab a picnic from Captain Cook’s — or a Lapu Lapu from Tambu Lounge! — and head down to the Polynesian’s beach to take in the magical display out in the open air.

La Hacienda de San Angel: If it’s Illuminations that you’re after, La Hacienda de San Angel offers incredible views of Epcot’s World Showcase Lagoon from its comfortable dining room. The menu of fresh Mexican cuisine and top notch margaritas means that you’ll enjoy the food as much as the view.

Our Tips for Snagging Your Coveted Disney Dining Reservation

We’ve got a few tried and true tips for scoring those hard-to-get reservations, though, so that you hopefully will be able to enjoy the vacation of your dreams.

Book Reservations As Soon As Possible: Either call 407-WDW-Dine or book reservations online at DisneyWorld.com exactly 180 days before you wish to dine at a particular restaurant. If you’re staying at a Disney on-site resort, you can book 180 + 10 days out as long as you provide your valid resort confirmation number. That means you can call 180 days before you arrive and book dining for the first 10 days of your trip. Get online or on the phone as early as possible in the morning (phone lines open at 7am ET sharp).

If You’ve Missed the 180 Day Mark: Continue to check online or call daily to request your elusive reservation. Folks cancel trip and dining arrangements often, so you never know what you’re going to get.

Be Flexible with Times: Consider changing your time, and opting for a later or earlier dining time to snag a table. Recently I ended up with a very early dinner reservation — and it turned out to be fabulous! I had my whole evening free and crowds in the restaurant were very light.

Another suggestion: Split the party up. Rather than seating for a party of six, consider splitting into groups of three or even four and two. You might be seated easier that way.

Don’t Give Up!: Even when you’re in the Disney parks and resorts you could still score a “walk-up” reservation! Any restaurant or concierge/guest services desk should be able to let you know if a particular restaurant has any openings that day, or you can simply head to the restaurant you’re hoping for and ask at the podium if there are walk-up tables available. You might have to wait a while, but it’s worth a try — especially during slower seasons!

Here’s a heads up for upcoming Pop Century Resort guests at Walt Disney World — the Everything Pop Food Court menu has been updated with significant changes. Let’s take a look…

Breakfast

Most of our favorites are still on the morning menu including the popular POP Waffle with fruit topping (unfortunately, it’s now at a higher price ).

The chocolate chip pancakes, breakfast pizza, breakfast wrap, and breakfast potatoes did not survive the cuts. A potato casserole is now being offered as a side dish.

Don't Fear -- You can Still Get Your Pop Waffle!

New breakfast entrees include: a biscuit with sausage gravy and scrambled eggs; empanada puff pastry; corned beef hash; and new omelet choices (Southwest, Floridian, Italian, and Vegetable).

We have also spotted a Create-Your-Own Yogurt Parfait, Spanish Quiche, and Breakfast Burrito. Most of these items are also available on the Kids’ Menus.

Instead of an “Omelet of the Day”, there’s now a large daily selection of omelets. Here are just a few:

New Omelets.

If you enjoy a cool beverage, look for the Iced French Vanilla, Iced Mocha, Iced Latte, Popaccino (Iced French Vanilla with vanilla syrup, espresso, and ice), or a Strawberry and Banana Smoothie. These drinks are available all day.

Lunch and Dinner

Some items cut from the lunch and dinner offerings include: Roast Beef and Bleu Focaccia; Reuben Flatbread; Tilapia Sandwich; Mexican Hot Dog; Chili Cheese Fries; Vegetarian Lasagna; Salmon; Shrimp Lo Mein; Mom’s Night Out Fried Chicken; and the awesome Chicken Penne Alfredo (there is a new chicken and pasta alfredo dish, though — see below, thanks to Daniel Staten).

But some things have been added for you to try! For burgers, choose between the new Salmon or Southwest options. The Angus Bacon Burger is now served without barbecue sauce.

Other new sandwiches include a Spring Roll Sub, Sloppy Joe, Turkey Sandwich (with Mashed Potatoes, Cornbread Stuffing, and Cranberry Mayonnaise), and Roasted Pork.

New entrees that might tempt your taste buds have been added!

Look for Rotisserie Chicken, Roasted Pork Loin, Roasted Vegetables, Sesame Chicken Nuggets, Coconut Curry Shrimp, Pot Roast, Beef Brisket, Beef Stroganoff, Margherita Flatbread, Roasted Vegetable Cavatappi, Chicken Cavatappi, Mussels, Shrimp and Cheesy Grits, Pork Shank, Chicken & Dumplings, Crab Quesadilla, Meaty Stromboli, Sweet Italian Sausage Sub, Beer Battered Fish & Chips, and Pasta with meatballs or sausage.

Dinner Menu Items.

Pizza lovers will now find “pizza bread“. And if you love French fries, they are now served with gravy!

For soup fans, savor these new options: Wonton, Sweet & Sour, Sausage & Potato, or Minestrone.

Kids have new menu items too! Pork Loin, Roast Chicken, taco, burrito, Italian Sausage sub, Meatball Sub, Fish & Chips, Roasted Vegetables, and more!

News! More Eat to the Beat Concerts Announced for the 2013 Epcot Food and Wine Festival

As we gear up for this year’s Epcot Food and Wine Festival, we’ve been keeping an eye on the Eat to the Beat concert line-up. Concert-goers can start making festival plans to see their favorite group during the festival, which runs September 27 – November 11, 2013.

This list is preliminary and is ALWAYS subject to change! Eat to the Beat concerts happen three times per evening, so you have three chances each night to see your favorites — 5:30pm, 6:45pm, and 8:00pm!

Fun Finds: More Obscure and Awesome Disney Food Merchandise…

During our recent travels to Walt Disney World, AJ and I ran into some weird and random food-related merchandise in many Disney shops. Here’s a little tour of what’s for sale in the World these days (descriptions are our humble opinions…).

Ceramic 1971 Magic Kingdom Tumbler

Nostalgia is big when it comes to Disney merch right now, and there’s nothing out there quite like this ceramic 1971 MK tumbler. It even comes with a swirly straw and rubber cap.

Kind of Creepy Mickey Bottle Opener

I’ll be honest — this bottle opener creeps me out in the same way the BoardWalk Inn clown slide does. BUT, it’s for sale all over the parks on both coasts, so people must love it!

This Ariel fascinator (tiny hat) displays a dinglehopper disguised as a fork. Note the coral-esque “feathers” on the left.

Diva Pot Holders

This new kitchen series features a potholder/dishtowel combination. The Tink version says “Domestic Diva,” the Cinderella version says, “I don’t do dishes,” and the Minnie version says, “Desperate Housewife.” Hmmmmm.

I always love scoping out the bags at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Epcot’s Japan, and these were a great find. This one says “Hansel and Gretel go to the sweet house in the forest.”

These come in a pair so you can keep one and share one with your BFF. That’s almost like sharing a real Mickey Bar. (Oh wait, that’s not something I’ve ever done )

We’ve got some Be Our Guest Restaurant menu updates for lunch and dinner!

Yep — the brand new Be Our Guest Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom’s New Fantasyland is already updating their choices and prices based on high demand…

Be Our Guest Restaurant Menu Changes Already in the Works...

Price Increases

First up, we have some price increases to contend with. We’ll need to dig deeper into our pockets when ordering lunch and dinner items.

For example at dinner, the French Onion Soup was $6.99 and is now $7.49; Thyme-scented Pork Rack Chop went up $2; and the Sauteed Shrimp and Scallops will now cost an additional $3. The steak dinner is up a few dollars as well. While dessert prices remained the same, most prices for appetizers and entrees on the dinner menu were increased.

Guests will now pay an additional $3 for the Be Our Guest Restaurant Scallops and Shrimp

New Menu Items

Chicken Breast Provençal (Pan-seared and simmered in a rustic blend of Heirloom Tomatoes, Olives, White Wine, and fresh Herbs with Seasonal Vegetables and Roasted Fingerling Potatoes) has replaced the Rotisserie Cornish Hen.

At lunch, the Grilled Steak Sandwich has been substituted with a Carved Prime Chuck Roast Beef Sandwich.

See ya later, Steak Sandwich! It was nice while it lasted...

For kids, the Mickey Check Meal at dinner is a Meatloaf Entree with Turkey Meatloaf, Broccoli Florets, and Zucchini served with Orange “Stuff” for Dipping (this is a carrot ketchup), plus a fruit cup for dessert.
