Michael N has very kindly translated the instruction cards for the back of cameras into Japanese and Chinese, in case other people want to create cameras in those countries. We’ll be adding these to the site somewhere so people creating cameras can access the translations as needed, and we’ll try and do the same for more languages.

We also need help to translate our ‘found a camera’ page into other languages, so people who stumble across the cameras are able to understand more about the project. We have German and Spanish already, and Japanese and Chinese in the works. If you can help out translating the site into other languages, please let us know.

Well, I was born in Rhodes Harbour, Greece and promptly got on a ferry to Symi. Beautiful place it is too. Here are a few snaps of where I’ve been…I even made friends with a snorkelling cat, although she seemed half asleep so not much conversation had there. Anyway, I managed to escape from my owner and am now with another lovely lady called Gabby at a hotel called ‘iapetos village’. Gabby has promised me that she will be sending me to America!! (that’s me in the bag with Gabby - much too hot for that kind of treatment…) I do hope I get there…always wanted to see the Big Apple. Hope you like my attempt at artistic shots?

Thanks to Camera 166, follow its continuing journey over at the camera tracker page.

If you’ve been following the project, you’ll know that one of our cameras has already made its way to Everest Basecamp with Monika A. a few months ago, and we’ve had a number of great suggestions from people as to where we could drop cameras for the coveted ‘Camera 32‘ title. One of the possible Camera 32 entrants is Sally R. who will be travelling to the Arctic later this month, with a couple of our cameras in tow. We’re going to be following Sally’s trip to the north of the planet via the blog and camera page once it has been setup. Here is a little bit on Sally’s trip.

We will fly via Copenhagen to Greenland where we are being airlifted by helicopter to the ice sheets to camp out and do hydrological field work. Along the way we will be staying at an international scientific research station in the Arctic, and also a youth hostel for a few days at the end of the trip in Kangerlussuaq in West Greenland while we do a bit of kayaking, hiking etc. It was here that I thought there would be good opportunity to leave/pass on cameras to interesting people.

Really looking forward to hearing from Sally on her journey, and a little more about what she does over the course of the next few months.

Dominique emailed us today to ask to create her own camera, along with these kind words about the project:

I have read about your project in a local freesheet. Straight away I thought it is an amazing idea. People move about and see things that can be never passed onto someone else, they can never share the experience with anybody- the disposable memories…I work in a photoshop and see hundreds of photos every day; photos that have little soul and matter to few people.

Your project brings back the uniqueness of every experience captured randomly and shared with those who believe their memory will return and will be seen by many.

Thanks Domi, you sum up the project so well, and we’re really glad to have you as part of our community. Looking forward to hearing about your camera!

One of the big problems we face with getting cameras home, is that they need to be sent via the postal service (we like to handle developing the films ourselves, as we take them to a good lab to make sure we get the most out of the images - disposable cameras have a habit of being a bit dodgy quality!) back home to London. This is quite a big ask for people, and whilst we are happy to cover all the costs of getting that camera home, sometimes organising an international package can be a pain.

So, we’re asking for volunteers to act as local representatives of the project. We’d like to find people in the following areas who would be willing to act as a local address where people can send their cameras:

<del datetime="2009-05-28T00:06:23+00:00">West Coast USA</del>
<del datetime="2009-05-28T00:06:23+00:00">East Coast USA</del>
Europe
Africa
Asia
Russia
India
<del datetime="2009-05-28T00:06:23+00:00">Australia</del>

What would be involved?
Nothing immediately, but when a camera is finished in the same country as you, we’ll provide the person who currently holds the camera with your address. They’d drop the camera in the post to you, and then you’d send it on to us. We’ll cover all of your costs of getting the parcel to us, and you’d have our eternal gratitude!

How often do I need to go to the post office?
Very rarely. We currently have only 9 cameras out of 120 or so - its unlikely you’d need to do it any more than two or three times a year. If this changes, you can always opt-out of the project, and we’d still be friends! :)

Okay, I’m up for that
Cool - email us at hello@disposablememoryproject.org and we’ll sort out the details!

Also, if you have any ideas on how to make the project easier for people to return cameras, do let us know - we’re happy to consider all suggestions!

Originally created by Matt and Kris, the camera was handed over to Mary, who seemed to take it on a drive around the area. Matt told us more about its journey:

[Mary] informed us that during the preceding week, she had gone on an adventure all up and down the central coast of California taking pictures with the disposable camera that we’d left with her some weeks before. From Cayucos to Los Osos and all parts between, she told us about all the things she’d snapped pictures of.

Camera 97 has returned home full of images from the UK. It’s journey started in Lyme Regis, after a handful of photos being taken around the bay, and then left on the Cob Wall by Graham K:

This is the sea wall made famous in the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

The camera was quickly found by Susan P, who took a number of images:

I found the camera on the Cobb, I was on holiday at the time in Dorset. The dog is Molly in the cottage where we stayed. The children are 2 of my grandchildren at home in West Yorks. The young lady is a colleague in front of our Centenary Tapestry in Horbury, well worth a viewing!! Finally the Catherdral is Wakefield Cathedral.

Moving North with Susan P, the camera found its way to RSPB Bempton Cliffs in Bridlington, North Humberside, where it was found by Robert D, and then Daphne P. who eventually returned the film home for development.

Both Graham and Susan have commented on the camera to tell us more about the images. You can have a look at the pictures and comments at the Camera 97 page.
