The Future Is Here: Distortion Reborn, Part Two

This week we have made some long-awaited upgrades to the site. After months of development and some great listener suggestions, we have started to roll out a completely new design and layout, improving navigation and letting you quickly and easily find what you're looking for on Distortion Radio. Most importantly, the music is now just a click away from any page. You can select a channel from the "Stations" drop-down menu on the navigation bar and listen using our brand new integrated player interface. From any of the new channel pages, you can see what's currently playing, view extended playlist history, join the live chat, and, for registered members, find music to request. The latest music news headlines can also be found in addition to the top artists on each station. As we continue to upgrade the site, we will add even more features, including new sponsorship opportunities for bands and businesses. Keep checking back here for updates!

New Mobile Streams Launched

Earlier this week we began offering low-bitrate aacPlus (HE-AAC) streams on all of our channels. Perfect for mobile streaming, these new optimized streams provide excellent audio quality with increased resilience to buffering. The streams are compatible with many different mobile platforms. Currently, you can listen using an installed media player by clicking on any of the 32k player options. Soon these streams will also be available to play directly on our website, allowing you to listen on supported versions of iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, and other devices without requiring a native application.

2010 Recap, 2011 Preview

It's time to take a look back at the past year and give you a preview of what's to come on Distortion Radio. By far, the biggest event of 2010 occurred in November, when we launched the first phase of our all-new internet radio platform. For those who missed the memo, DR now offers multiple channels of high-quality music ranging from pop to alternative to metal. Check out A-1 Hits, Absolute Alternative, and Aggression to find out what you may have been missing! Earlier in the year, we introduced our supporter rewards program, which rewards listeners for sending financial support. We also had an iPod Touch giveaway, and there are more contests planned for the future. Last but not least, we had a great time hanging out at this year's Vans Warped Tour in Columbia, MD, and we hope to see you out there in 2011!

While 2010 was a big year, we think you'll be excited to find out what we have in store for 2011. With a brand new site coming in January, you will finally be able to enjoy everything our new channels have to offer. All content will be integrated, and the ability to easily take Distortion Radio with you wherever you go will soon become a reality. Mobile listening will be possible on all major platforms with official apps to be released for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry devices. Longtime listeners will welcome the return of several programs, including The Black Hole and Scene Xposed, both of which will showcase the very best in underground music from metal to alternative rock. For artists, we're working on more ways to promote your music along with innovative new sponsorship opportunities. Other plans for the new year include the addition of on-demand content to the site plus new shirt designs and products in our merch store. Finally, to get the year off to a good start, we're already adding lots of new releases, giving you the latest in today's hit music, modern alternative rock, and underground metal. Warped Tour 2010 Wrap-Up

On Tuesday, 7/20, Distortion Radio was at Vans Warped Tour 2010 in Columbia, MD. A hot and steamy summer day couldn't stop us from hanging out at the longest-running music festival in North America, and we wasted no time meeting up with some of the bands.

Local act Dropout Year played early in the day on the Ernie Ball stage and performed as a full band for the first time in months after going through several member changes. Lead singer Steve Reter spent a few moments chatting with us after their set. Later on, we met up with Fight Fair (Triple Crown Records) from San Diego, CA, and Closure In Moscow (Equal Vision Records), an Australian progressive rock group who had been playing their first ever Warped Tour. We appreciate all of the bands that took the time to talk with us and record some shout outs for us. Be sure to listen for some of the on-air material that the artists recorded during the event!

There were so many great bands to see and definitely something for everyone, but our favorite was Sum 41 on the main stage. With the circle pit going in full force and crowd surfers to top it off, Sum 41 was certainly the highlight of the day. Nearly the entire crowd was standing during "Fat Lip," with the audience singing along through the whole song. The set featured some of the band's early hits and several covers including songs by Metallica and The Rolling Stones. It was a great performance and a definite crowd pleaser.

In all, Warped Tour 2010 in Columbia, MD was an amazing event. Although the tour has deviated from its punk roots in recent years, it still has a lot to offer, and we look forward to returning next year for Warped Tour 2011!
