Portland Fashion Week: Sustainable Independent Style

Portland Fashion Week wrapped up October 24th, and we were happy to be able to take in a few shows. Portland has long boasted a creative urban environment, so it made perfect sense for the city to jump into the fashion arena in 2003 with the first Portland Fashion Week. In a city known as the country's "#1 Sustainable City" and where many citizens have strong ties to nature, P-Town naturally chose to go with a theme of sustainability in fashion. Now the second longest running fashion week on the West Coast, PFW is specifically targeted towards eco-friendly and independent designers.Though following sometimes chaotic organization, this years PFW showcased an amazing selection of designers and styles for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2008 season. Not only eco-friendly, there was a general trend towards color, comfort, and wearability. Soft cleanly-cut pieces from the collections designers like Sameunderneath and Lizzie Parker will easily transition off the runway and onto the street this spring.
Pieces were bright and cheerful, with simple shapes and contours.We're looking forward to next season, but in the meantime we'll be featuring some of our favorite PFW designers. The Photographers were there and they've captured some great styles in their slide show.

Independent Designers Reach Out During Breast Cancer Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the time when many organizations come together to increase our awareness of breast cancer and encourage women to partake in early detection tests. For some time, the American Breast Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and many other organizations have joined with businesses of all kinds to offer stylish and chic products in support of breast cancer research. You have undoubtedly seen the hundreds of offerings this month for pink varieties of nail polish, lipstick, candles, pants, shirts, flower bouquets, and more. As many of the products have a high cost and the percentage of profit donated to the chosen fund often seems low, it’s easy to become both overwhelmed and unaffected by the promotions.

We’re happy to note, however, that big businesses aren’t the only ones teaming up for a cure this month. Independent designer fashion boutique MadieDeluxe, with its usual array of handmade and original bags and purses, is offering simple and sleek Pink wristlets and clutches. MadieDeluxe has partnered with the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, and is offering silk bags embroidered with the word “Hope.” Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the foundation. We’ve just discovered a new line of sustainable clothing that we love. Elroy Apparel is created by indie fashion designer Leanne McElroy. Created especially for the sophisticated health-conscious woman, this Canadian line features simple clean shapes with a feminine fit.

Audrey Hepburn couldn’t have looked cuter when wearing dainty little flats. This year, the tiny shoe trend hit big when women began embracing the anti-wedge. You don’t have to be a prima ballerina to enjoy the comfort and youthful style of the ballet flat, but it was original dance solesters who brought back the ballet-style shoe. Now a wardrobe staple, the heel-less shoes were originally popular with older women because of the comfort they provided.

Modeled after the light leather slip-on shoes that dancers would wear, the flats began to rise in 2004. A collective of aware fashionists, Social Atelier uses clothing to illustrate devastating truths in our society. For this season, they are focusing on genocide in Darfur, and they have chosen to send 15% of their profits to the Solar Cooker Project. The project works to improve the conditions of women living in refugee camps by alleviating the need for them to go out and seek fuel. The designers behind these sleek 100% organic cotton tees have focused on a number of issues in the past, including AIDS, poverty, global warming, and gay marriage. They have also hosted an Ethical Night Out launch party for their line.

Why We Don't Shop for a Cause

Lately, it seems that many top consumer brands are reaching out to we as consumers by connecting with our conscience. Now, it’s not enough to have a stylish product and a great corporate marketing campaign. The big brands are aligning themselves with social issues as well. We see it everyday: from the multi-company consumer campaign (Product) Red – aligning top names like Apple, Gap, Emporio Armani, and Motorola – to the ever-present breast cancer campaign, big brands are hoping to make big bucks while also doing some good. It seems like an ideal setup for the semi-conscientious consumer. Spend money on brands you love while contributing to campaigns targeting everything from global AIDS awareness to a healthier environment. However, so many prominent companies have taken on a cause that consumers now come to expect it from all. This would seem like a step in the right direction to many, but in fact, as shoppers we now suffer from consumer cause fatigue. A recent study suggests that the number of shoppers who have purchased a product after learning it was associated with a cause has been dropping. Only 14% of the shoppers surveyed now purchased a more expensive but socially significant product, compared to 28% in 2004. The number of consumers who are telling family and friends about these products has also fallen. In a world where the best form of marketing is still word of mouth, socially aware shopping may have met its match. If you're still willing to intentionally spend more to purchase an item where a small percentage of proceeds benefit others, the list of companies with a cause continues to grow.

Linda Loudermilk is a leading fashion designer with a flare for the natural. Outfitting celebrities like Jane Fonda, Debra Messing, and Jennifer Beals, Loudermilk applies her high fashion skills to textiles made from sasawashi, bamboo, sea cell, soya, and EcoSpun fabric. DIY T-Shirt Design #3

With this do-it-yourself t-shirt design, you can refashion something that’s a little drab and baggy into a new fun creation perfect for a casual day at work or at school.
Materials: 1 short sleeve recycled t-shirt, beads of any kind or decorative bangles, scissors, needle and thread, jumbo safety pin (optional)
DIY: If you have a white or light colored t-shirt, try dying it a nude or tan color with strong tea. As a more colorful option, you can take a brightly colored juice, like cranberry or grape, and soak your shirt in the liquid for 20-30 minutes to stain it a pink or purple shade. Once your shirt is dry, lay it flat and cut off the sleeves at the shoulder seams. Cut about 1” off the bottom hem of the shirt, and save this extra material. On the front of the shirt, cut the neckline down in a V. Don’t get too carried away though! You may want to try the shirt on first to mark how much décolletage you’re comfortable with. Once you have your V cut, take your thread and (starting near the base of the V) knot it through on one side. String beads along the thread and pull across to the other side of the V. Stitch the thread through on the opposite side to secure the beads. Repeat slightly higher up the V. As an alternative, you may want to string beads on a jumbo safety pin and pin this across the V. You can also sew a button, bead or decoration and the base of the V for added ornamentation. Using your leftover hem fabric, cut two 4” long strips. Wrap each around the shoulder seams of the shirt to gather the fabric. Tuck the edges of the strip underneath the shoulder and sew them in place to finalize this DIY t-shirt design.

Why You Shouldn’t Freecycle

Normally we would promote an opportunity to recycle your old goods into new use. When you have the chance to trade used clothes, appliances, furniture, and even homegrown vegetables with other likeminded recyclers in your neighborhood, usually you should. But the line stops at personal information. Which is why so many people are pulling out of their city’s freecycle network.
In 2003, Deron Beal founded the original Freecycle Network in Tucson, Arizona as a local organization. The group soon became a network popping up in other cities, and before long freecyclers spread across the nation. So far, the groups have been organized online through Yahoo groups. Each has local moderators, but Beal maintained ultimate control.
While freecyclers love saving goods from ending up in the landfill, unwanted advertising and harvesting of user information, is not something most signed up for. So when Beal announced changes were in order, many local freecycle groups began pulling away. The changes included the addition of a link that was said to connect everyone to a new site being created. But the link also took everyone’s email addresses and personal information, and then distributed this information to a third-party site. When groups began challenging the additions, they were deleted from Yahoo. Thanks to tactics like these, many members of the 3.6 million person worldwide organization are now looking elsewhere for their recycling needs. Beal is reportedly creating a new Freecycle website—to go live in November—that would not rely on Yahoo and would give him the opportunity to sell advertising. Other members, in turn, have stated that commerce should not be a part of Freecycle.
In the spirit of keeping groups local, many former freecyclers are now finding renewed strength in new organizations. The ReUseIt Network, with a similar ideal as the Freecycle Network, is seeing a new wash of members joining up to keep community recycling alive. Decorate Your Home with Ocean Objects

Your beachside finds don't have to stay stowed away in the garage all winter or tossed out back like the remnants of a summer sandbox. Even if you don't live in a cozy ocean cottage, the shells, rocks, and other great treasures from your summer sea vacation will get added life as objects of decor. Use these tips as inspiration for incorporating shells and sea glass into your home.
1) The top of this bookcase has an array of white framed photos. Large white shells add an organic element to more simplistic modern furniture. Displayed on a shelf above, the repetition of the four shells in a row balances the asymmetry of the different sized picture frames below. Arranged with the pictures are an off-white candle under a glass ornament and two handmade sea urchin candlesticks.
2) Have you collected any beautiful sea glass along the beach? These polished shards in blue, green, white, and brown are arranged around the base of a turquoise candle – very similar in color to the Mediterranean. They will catch the natural sunlight coming in near a door or window. The rest of your shells and rocks can be arranged in a decorative bowl. Prominent pieces like sand dollars and sea stars can be mixed with smaller broken shells, agates, and palm-sized bits of driftwood. These pieces are arranged with Franciscan Ware pottery to reflect the blues and greens of the sea glass.
DIY Sea Urchin Candlesticks: Whole sea urchin skeletons are a superb find! If you're lucky enough to come across some of these, save them. The skeleton shell has a hole on either side. The smaller upper hole is just the right size to fit the base of a tapered candle. If you have two sea urchin skeletons, stack them so that the smaller one rests securely on top, and attach the two with hot glue. A small tile or square piece of wood painted to match your interior can be used for the base and will help keep the stacked shells steady. Use more hot glue to anchor the bottom skeleton to the base. When the tapered candles are lit, the melted wax will add to the decoration and the natural beauty.
