From jam packed performances, to celebs attacking their fans in the middle of their acts the 2013 Billboard Music Awards were definitely ones to watch on Sunday night. Of course what truly stood out amongst all the the action were the celebs who made it their mission to wow us on the red carpet, so lets recap our five favorite looks from last night.

Miley Cyrus is letting the world know why she deserved that number one spot on Maxim’s Hot 100 list slaying the red carpet in a Balmain jumpsuit from their Spring 2013 collection. 

Kelly Rowland was serving effortless beauty in this textured metallic number from Rami Ali 

Jennifer Lopez showed the kids how to show up and show out on the carpet in a gold plunging neck line dress from Zuhair Murad and Christian Louboutin Heels.

 Selena Gomez brought Haute couture to the Billboard Music Awards arriving in a look from Atelier Versace

Last but not least Chris Brown wore scruffy face, long sleeves, skinny jeans and Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers.

Not since Facebook purchased Instagram last year has a social media startup sold for major dough. The aging online portal Yahoo is set to buy the hugely popular blogging platform Tumblr for an estimated $1.1 Billion cash-deal. Tumblr founder David Karp, (former Bronx high school drop out – turned billionaire) will stay on for at least four more years during the acquisition.

Penn Jillette, finalist of this season’s Celebrity Apprentice

If you’ve been keeping up with the drama behind one of America’s beloved Reality TV shows, then you’ve probably more than familiar with the famous phrase “You’re Fired!” Hopefully, you’ll never have to hear those piercing words from inside a board room from mega mogul Donald Trump. This season of “Celebrity Apprentice” has certainly seen its fair share of friction between cast members, from Trace Adkins’ battle with Marilu Henner to Gary Busey turning on his teammates in the boardroom and more. Yesterday, I caught up to the two men that have yet to hear “You’re Fired” on this season’s Celebrity Apprentice, Penn Jillette and Trace Adkins. In the latest episode of Celebrity Apprentice, both men were challenged to battle it out creating a new flavor of ice cream for Delish. (Check out the latest episode below…)

The in store event allowed fans to taste-test the flavors for themselves AND vote for a chance to win Duane Reade gift cards! As a firm believer in the magic of ice cream, I asked Penn the secret behind his “Vanilla & Chocolate Magic Swirtle” flavor. “It’s all in the sea salt!” Not only is the ice cream reminiscent of a chocolate turtle in vanilla ice cream, it also has a swirl of sea salt that gives you a sweet and salty cool treat!

African Americans and Mobile Devices

There are 43 million African Americans in the United States and is an economic powerhouse.  How does the African American community impact a company’s bottom line with their purchasing decisions, mobile phone activities and digital experience?  The numbers tell the full story – You Matter.

This post is a continuation from my previous article on African Americans and Social Media – The Numbers and Networks, published recently.  The article was a synopsis on a Pew Research Study that found African Americans are the highest users of social media applications Twitter and Instagram, mostly women, urban residents, between 18-29 years of age – Generation Y.

Another in-depth analysis titled “African-American Consumers:  Still Vital, Still Growing 2012 Report” provides a better understanding of buying power and what drives, influences, and motivates African Americans in their buying behavior focusing on mobile, online, and other products and services.  The report is geared to help businesses better market and advertise their services to African Americans. So how are the numbers of African Americans and Mobile Devices, read some interesting stats below:

African Americans and Mobile Devices – Gender

The report suggests that:

·         Black women are critical in the Black community and are the most influential in what products get purchased and services used.  Black women are more likely to use social networking sites and purchase clothes, groceries, health, and beauty products online.

·         Black women ages 18-35 are more likely to publish a blog, like, link, or follow a brand or website.

·         Black men are more likely to view and monitor stocks and investments online and read tech news.

African Americans and Mobile Devices – Influence and Advertising

·         31% of African Americans watch consumer-generated video online including YouTube (48%), Other (31%), Netflix (10%), Hulu (8%), VEVO (3%), and yahoo (1%).

·         Young African Americans are early adopters of new technology and are pop culture influencers across the board.

·         91% of African Americans believe that Black media is more relevant to them and that 60% of Generation Y users (ages 18-34) consume Black media information on a mobile device.

·         African Americans are heavy smart phone users with a rate that grew from 33% to more than 54% last year.

·         African Americans are heavy users of mobile features including texting, internet access, email, camera usage, music, video, and accessing social media apps like Facebook and Twitter.

·         “Black consumers are 30% more likely to visit Twitter using mobile phones than the average consumer.” (African-American Consumers:  Still Vital, Still Growing 2012 Report)

·         African Americans are more likely to conduct research on their smart phones before making a purchase.

It Can Wait Campaign Grows – All 4 Major US Carriers Support the Cause

Now joined by Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile, the It Can Wait campaign is getting stronger. It doesn’t just have the support of these carriers, there are 200 other companies that are spreading the word.

“Texting while driving is a deadly habit that makes you 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash,” said AT&T Chairman & CEO Randall Stephenson. “Awareness of the dangers of texting and driving has increased, but people are still doing it. With this expanded effort, we hope to change behavior. Together, we can help save lives.”

The summer-long initiative kicks off on May 26^th and will be supported by a new national advertising campaign featuring people who are living with the consequences of texting while driving, a large-scale nationwide texting-while-driving simulator tour, major retail presence in tens of thousands of stores, and more. The campaign, aimed at educating drivers to change behaviors that will ultimately help save lives, will run throughout the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, deemed by AAA as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers.

It Can Wait Campaign Grows: Shocking Facts About Texting and Driving:

Texting while driving is an epidemic, and it’s not isolated to teen drivers. It affects adults as well. A recent AT&T survey shows business commuters know texting while driving is unsafe, but they still engage in these behaviors. In fact:

They are texting and driving more than they used to.

• Six in 10 commuters said they never texted while driving three years ago.

Nearly half of commuters admit to texting while driving, which is more than teens.

• 49 percent of commuters self-report texting while driving, compared to 43 percent2 of teens.

Despite knowing the risks.

• 98 percent said sending a text or email while driving isn’t safe.

For many, it has become a habit.

• More than 40 percent of those who admitted to texting while driving called it a habit.

It Can Wait Campaign Grows – National Day of Action

The highlight of the summer campaign will be a national day of action on Sept. 19. On that day, It Can Wait advocates will reach out in their communities to raise awareness of the risks of texting while driving, encourage everyone to make a personal commitment not to text and drive and recruit others to join the growing ranks of advocates dedicated to saving lives by ending texting while driving.
