Join The Great Fiji Shark Count This November 2012

Shark Savers has recently announced its sponsorship and participation in the Great Fiji Shark Count in November 2012. And you can take part in this event on your Fiji diving vacation!

This major event to ‘count’ the shark population in Fiji is being run in partnership with their ‘citizen science database of shark sightings’ which was initiated recently as part of the SharksCount Program.
All the data collected during the Shark Count will be used to help map shark distribution and numbers in Fiji. This information will be shared with scientific and conservation groups in an effort to protect these important local shark populations.

Sharks are vital for maintaining healthy and balanced marine food chains and ecosystems. The results of the shark count will help in the planning of future protection strategies in Fiji. The survey will take place on a regular basis to monitor conservation efforts and population trends. The data will also be put into the International SharksCount database.

SharkSavers have designed and produced shark identification sheets and posters for the count and have produced guidelines for counting methods. The organisation will be in Fiji in November for this fantastic event and need your participation.

How you can help

The Great Fiji Shark Count is open to all scuba divers and snorkelers, both tourists and locals alike. Counting is easy and can be arranged through participating dive resorts and operations.

Just south of Viti Levu on Beqa Island is the award winning Beqa Lagoon Resort . Shark spot in the lagoon and on its barrier reef.
