Paradise Reef

It was a beautifully sunny day and the office was crazy busy, booking a group on a liveaboard holiday and running a few diving courses so all our instructors where occupied.

Then 2 young guys walked in, intent on taking a short diving trip. One of the young men had never dived before, but he was very keen and up for the challenge. His friend was full of encouragement, he was a certified diver with a few dives under his belt, but admitted it had been a while since his last dive.

So, although I was meant to “woman” the office, I polished up my dive instructor credentials and  took them diving! Paradise Reef is a small house reef just a short 5 minute boat ride from Patong Beach. On a good day you will find clear waters and lots of amazing creatures hidden among the coral.

We did 1 dive and everything was perfect.  My student felt great on his first time breathing underwater and his friend was happy to be in the water again. We were delighted to see a rare species of honeycomb moray eel that you don’t see often in this area. Soon we were surrounded by dancing harlequin sweetlips, schools of fusiliers and loads more…

So, with relief, we can say that most of Fiji’s dive resorts have come through the weekend safe from harm.

When asked about Viti Levu and surrounding islands, Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto said “They remain untouched by the cyclone’s passing”. Tuamoto went on to say that all power and communication lines have been restored in Vanua Levu and Taveuni. Which is great news for your diving at Lagoon Resort and Paradise Taveuni Resort.

On Kadavu, Dive Kadavu Matana Beach Resort was totally missed by Cyclone Tomas as it headed south-east out to the open sea. Matava Resort – The Great Astrolabe Hideaway reported some severe weather, but as they were not in the cyclone’s path everything is A-OK today.

Despite dropping anchor at the Vanua Levu, the island worst hit by Tomas, AS Tui Tai sheltered in Viani Bay and experienced only minimal damage.  As a precaution her guests were successfully evacuated and she will lay at harbour this week for some basic carpentry to restore her to her former beauty as one of the world’s sexiest liveaboards.
