Thanks so much for all your support this year - we really appreciate it and it has helped us make great progress with our mission to end homophobic bullying in UK schools.

Carnival

First - a huge thank you to those who came to our Carnival event on back on 25 October. We had a ball and we hope you did too. Most importantly, we managed to raise an amazing total of £75k, which was beyond our wildest dreams! Thanks so much to everyone who made generous donations of time, expertise, money, prizes or other essential items (for example, vodka), bid for auction prizes, or simply bought tickets and played games at the carnival stalls. It makes such a difference to us to have this support and the money raised will make it much easier for us to expand our reach and launch new projects.

Planning for next year’s event has already started!

Workshops for primary schools

Most of our work over the last year has been with secondary schools but we also know that workshops with primary children can have a hugely beneficial effect. We have recently rolled out new workshops based on the idea of “different families” with primary schools in Brixton and Camden and have had fantastic results so far. Students run a press conference to find out more information about a special guest (one of our role models) and usually discover that they have an ‘alternative family’. We talk about love being the vital ingredient in a family and then give students definitions of words like gay and teach them to use them responsibly. One student, when asked whether they would recommend the workshop to other students said; ‘yes, because it teaches them how to use the words gay and lesbian without being silly’. We will be continuing to develop our primary school programme next year.

Teacher training

As well as running workshops directly with students, we are trialling a programme in which teachers are trained to facilitate the workshops themselves with our experienced role models. We have also been rolling out teacher training in primary schools to make schools better prepared for students with two mums and two dads, and to give all staff resources to deal with homophobic language or behaviour. This is taking place across 9 schools in Brixton. One teacher commented: ‘the best inset [staff training session] we’ve had in years’.

New Patrons

Possibly as a result of Suran’s persuasive way with a shot of Sambuca, we are delighted to announce that singer Alison Moyet (fresh from her stunning performance at the DRM Carnival) and rugby legend Gareth Thomas have agreed to be patrons. We’re very excited to have them on board.
