In almost all cases, the solution will be to replace the damaged area, because simply trying to repairing it after it has been weakened will likely end up costing more in the long run. This is in terms of both money and time. If you catch damage early on, then you have the best chances of being able to employ a quick repair method opposed to something more extensive.

It doesn't matter where in the house your drywall water damage is located, the first step is always to locate the source of where the water leak is coming from. In most cases, you will discover this to be a leaking pipe or perhaps a roofing problem which is allowing rain water to enter the house. There is no point in going to all the work of repairing damaged drywall only to have problem reoccur, because it was never properly handled to begin with.

Once you have taken care of the original leak you can begin to get to work on dealing with the water damaged drywall. The first step is to try out the area completely. You can use a high powered fan and/or a dehumidifier to assist with this process. The bottom line is you want to get rid of all moisture completely. This is very important and can not be stated with enough emphasis. If the area is not dried thoroughly, then dangerous molds can begin to grow in as soon as 24 hours. It may be necessary to cut a hole in the drywall to ensure that proper air circulation can be achieved. However this shouldn't be necessary for just a small crack.

If you are only repairing a small crack, then this can be relatively simple to fix. Just applying some spackling compound with the putting knife. If leaking water has caused extensive damage, then you will be forced to do more structural repair work.

If you are faced with a large portion of drywall damage due to water than the first step is to get rid of all of the affected material. If necessary use a handsaw or other tool to make the job easier. While doing this, be very observant to spot, any mold or mildew. If you find any then this material must be removed immediately as well. When you are done, thoroughly clean all surfaces.

After you have completed this, check for any moisture in the area that you may have missed earlier and make sure that it is completely dry before you begin any patch work. If you are replacing a large hole then you will need to use a plywood backing board. This is to give the new drywall somewhere to be fastened to. After the patch has been secured, you can begin with applying drywall tape, and drywall mud. After the mudding has dried finish it off by sanding which will leave the surface both flat and smooth. Now it is ready for painting.

While it is tempting to want to just clean up the damaged drywall., you are far better off ensuring that the plumbing or roofing leak has been taken care of first. A problem like this will not resolve itself and is well worth taking the extra time and money to ensure that, you are not faced with a larger expense or project later on. If you are unable to find the source of the leak your self, please do not hesitate to get professional help.

For further details on drywall water damage repair and other tips and tricks, be sure to visit http://waterdamageadvisors.com.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Clint_Harting

DIY Home CCTV Security System - Can This Be Utilised in Your Home Security Setup?

Individuals and especially law enforcement agencies require good quality visual representation to present during prosecutions, making CCTV systems the preferred method to achieve this.

CCTV which stands for Closed-Circuit Television is the usage of cameras that are capable of capturing videos or images. The video feed is then transmitted to a set of monitors and the whole system is limited to two points which would originate from the video cameras and would be transmitted to the monitoring stations. More often than not, CCTV systems nowadays are already paired with digital video recordings that can record the video on different storage media making it accessible for future viewing or reference.

When it comes to your home, you can also opt for home CCTV security systems. In commercial establishments where systems like this are installed, the motivation is primarily around security and also ensuring that certain processes are carried out correctly. But when it comes to your homes, the typical reasons relate to security.

Within the U.S. there has been a study indicating that burglars require only 60 seconds to break into your house and in the main achieve this through an open windows or doors that are left unlocked. Burglars also employ sophisticated methods to gain entry into your home including a variety of advanced tools so you cannot be entirely sure if your home is safe enough hence, the installation of home CCTV security systems to help prevent intruders.

Although these systems do not primarily stop a crime occurring, what they do help to achieve is a visible deterrent and should the worst occur a permanent record of the crime taking place. There have been a lot of cases not to mention burglary incidents in which the suspects had been arrested shortly after the crime thanks to the help of home CCTV security systems.

Home CCTV security can be somewhat expensive so if there is a way to get a better deal, then go for it. You may begin by researching the subject online although if you know a company in your area offering installation of this type of security system, then it could worth considering.

They usually offer free consultation in which they will appraise your home and assess what type of system will best serve your requirements. They can also make suggestions on which systems are available according to your budget. If they offer post-installation services as part of the package then that would be beneficial to you also considering these devices still need maintenance so they can keep functioning well into the future. If you are looking online instead, make sure that to look for offerings from different companies so you can compare and contrast the products. Which ever you decide, make a move now so at least you can be sure that you are one step ahead of the game when it comes to protecting your home.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jamie_Noone

Best Home Security System - What You Need to Consider

Choosing the best home security system really depends on your lifestyle. Do you spend a lot of time at home? Or are you usually away on business trips?

Simple facts like these can determine what the best home security system is for you.

For the Homebody

For the people who spend a lot of their time at home and don’t travel much, there are a few options to consider for the best home security system. This includes an alarm, which can either be silent or not. The silent option is more suitable to get the police to your home before the burglar realizes an alarm was triggered. Another item to include in the best home security system is an electronic door lock that allows only those who know the combination to activate or deactivate the alarm. This is especially helpful when installed in entrances. Those who do not know the combination will more than likely be intruders. If there are wireless cameras installed in this type of best home security system, there is the option of installing monitors as well. These monitors can be set up in a den or bedroom and will show live feeds of what the cameras are “looking at”. For the homebody this is perfect for round the clock observation of the house and family.

For the Traveler

There are also some best home security options for people who travel a lot throughout the year. Of course, their houses must be protected or there must be some kind of security system to help in the capture of any intruders in the house. Motion detection devices hooked up to silent alarms are very essential in this type of situation. This best home security system will set off an alarm that can be used to alert the police (with the right technical adjustment and permissions from authorities) but it will not let the robber know that it has been triggered.

You can also set it up so you can let a trusted neighbor or friend know that something is going on in the house. This will alert your friend that there is someone other than you inside the house and he or she can call the police. Nothing is more essential than to have a camera recording all the events in your house. Since wireless camera power sources are not reliable, you might want to consider cabled cameras that can get their power off of the local electricity in the house. This is the best home security system and you can have the camera record all the activities in the house while you are away. Now with so much free information on the internet, you can become a webmaster with patience and perseverance and run your own online business.

It starts with doing your research and finding a topic for your website. There are many free tools that can help you start. Write down 3-5 things that you know a lot about or are passionate about. It can be things that you really never thought could amount to much. Many often think that they don't know anything. That just isn't true. Everyone knows something about something. Look around online. Take a look at Google Trends or what are the top selling products on ebay or amazon.com. Take a look here at EzineArticles.com and see what are the most popular articles. Then use a free keyword tool like the Google AdWords Keyword tool or Word tracker (you can Google those) and find out how many people are searching for something similar. You can start really broad with terms like travel, cooking, gardening and start narrowing down a specific topic or area within each category that might work for you.

The idea is to find a topic that there is a lot of interest in but not many good sites out there providing that information. The goal is to find out what people want and then learn about DIY website building and turn that topic into a profitable website.

Before you actually start your site you will have to do more research and planning and first layout your site blueprint and navigation system. You will do that based on the keyword research that you do and your topic. Then start looking for ways to make money. There are many options- use Google AdSense which is putting ads on your website that when people click on them you get paid. You can also sell other people's products which is called affiliate marketing. You can also create your own ebook or write your own book and sell it.

You will choose your domain name based on your keyword research and site concept which is quite different from most who just decide on a domain and then build a site around it. Choosing the domain after you choose the concept will help you build a site that is better optimized for the search engines. Getting traffic will depend on you learning and implementing some search engine optimization. It is fairly simple. You just use the keywords in a specific way on the pages and use an XML sitemap and RSS feed to send info to the search engines.

You will also have to get other sites to link to you. It is not only for getting traffic but for looking good to the major search engines.

When you start getting traffic you can analyze what you are doing and find what is working best so you can do more of it!

It isn't easy. It doesn't happen overnight. DIY website building is just about learning and taking it all step by step.

Julie Onofrio a licensed massage practitioner in Seattle WA for 20 years who has turned into a in infopreneur creating DIY websites and teaching others how to do the same. Nowadays, the majority of the population now sees what they were talking about and some people are actually eager to do something about it. The widespread use of gas and coal has destroyed or air, our earth, and our waters, and it isn't doing our budgets any favors, either.

Studies show that the average American household spends over $200 per month on heating, air conditioning, and electricity. And, most of us aren't even comfortable. If we had our choice, we would turn our heaters up more in the winter, keep the house cooler in the summer, and use more hot water if we could afford it. The answer to this may be DIY wind generators.

DIY wind generators are the new way to use our environment's power to our benefit without leaving a nasty footprint behind. Even though traditional wind generators can cost upwards of $100,000, a wind generator or home wind mill can be built, at home, for less than $200. That cost will be more than offset during the first year's operation.

This type of generator is actually very easy to build and most DIY types should have no problem putting one together in a weekend, producing free energy for the home almost immediately. With the purchase of a few items, most of which can be bought at the local hardware store, a wind generator is not as hard to build as you might think.

A good guide can help you build your own DIY wind generators, save you money, and help to save the environment, too. By harnessing the power of the wind, you will use less coal, less natural gas, less electricity, and see a smaller utility bill every month.

Tray Halloran is an expert on DIY home solar energy and the director of the popular website DIYSolarSystemsInfo.Com. Mask off the 1cm spaces.

2) Determine where you want to apply the gold paint and apply masking tape horizontally to create a square. Apply paint.

3) Using a small brush, tap on the gold paint, so there is some texture when it dries.

How To Make Gift Baskets

The best gift baskets are organized around a theme so don't hold back in creativity department. A great gift basket should be as much fun to make as it is to receive. Here are some tips to make Gift Baskets:

1) Set a Budget

Gift baskets can be a thrifty gift-giving option, but the cost of all those little contents can add up quickly. Make sure to set an overall budget that includes the gift basket's contents, the basket itself and any ribbons or wrapping materials you plan on using.

2) Choose a Theme and Purchase Gifts

3) Pick a Basket or Container

Just because it's called a "gift basket" doesn't mean you actually need to use a basket to put all your gifts in. Consider an alternative container based on the theme you've selected, or hunt around the house for anything that can hold your purchases. Try one of the following:
1. Bowl
2. Ice Bucket
3. Watering Can
4. Wrapped Box
5. Flower Pot
6. Colander

4) Assemble Your Basket

You've done the personalization part by selecting your theme and gift items. Now it's time to work on your presentation.

You'll Need:

* Container or Basket
* Filling for the Basket (Tissue Paper, Newspaper, Raffia, Fabric, Etc.)
* Small Gifts and Foodstuffs (Basket's Contents)
* Cellophane Bag or Wrap
* Ribbon or a Bow
* Scissors
* Scotch Tape

Work Instructions:

Assembling a gift basket isn't a terribly complicated endeavor. You're putting a bunch of little things into a bigger thing. Nevertheless, here a few tips from the professionals on how to make your basket look its very best:

1. Buy your gift items before choosing your basket. You don't want your basket to be overstuffed or too empty so assemble your items before selecting a container.

2. Select a few centerpiece items. Choose a couple of tall, heavier items to place towards the back of the basket.

3. Use crumpled paper or fabric to make your basket look fuller. Put a filler at the bottom of your basket to prop up the gift items. You can use something decorative like raffia or something related to the basket's theme like crumpled up comic book pages for a child's basket.

4. Create a wall at the back of your basket with tall, heavy items. Use the wall to prop up smaller items in the front.

5. Fill in empty space with small items. Buy some small items or chocolates to fill in any gaps in your basket.

6. Use cellophane to wrap the basket. Be sure you have a long enough roll of cellophane to pull over the entire basket and bunch at the top.

7. Use the right size ribbon or bow. You don't want to overwhelm a small basket with a big bow or have a tiny bow on a huge basket.

How to Stack Firewood

But if you learn how to stack firewood correctly the first time it could help avoid some problems in the future.

The first thing to think about is if the firewood is green, wet or dry. If it's green or wet you will want to stack it in a technique that will allow it to dry quickly. In order to dry the firewood, it is important that it has plenty air flow.

First you will need to settle on where to stack the wood. If it's green or wet the best place to stack it will be out in the open where it will be exposed to the sun and wind. If it's dry a shed or covered area will be best. If you don't have a covered structure to stack it in a tarp or other cover will work.

You will want to stack your wood on something that keeps it away from the ground. Wood will absorb moisture from soil contact and it can encourage mold and decay. Not to mention the dirt will stick to the wood and make a mess. You can stack it on a concrete slab or on a pallet, tarp, plywood, or anything to keep it off the ground. A common way is to place two parallel boards, poles or similar objects on the ground and stack the wood on top and upright to them.

Begin stacking the wood and put the pieces parallel to each other and fit the pieces together as neatly as you can to make sure a stable stack. If you don't have stakes or something to stack against you can criss cross the pieces on the ends in the style of a log cabin so you can have perpendicular ends. It's usually best to not load your firewood more than 4 feet high or it could become unbalanced and fall over.

If your wood is wet or green it will shrink as it dries. It's common for the stack to start to lean to the side that dries the fastest which will usually be the side facing the sun. It can help if you make your stack a little away from the sun to compensate.

If your wood is dry you can stack it in a shed or under cover. It's best if the structure is ventilated to allow air flow. If you cover it with a tarp make sure you don't cover the whole pile all the way to the ground. This will hold in any moisture that may get in or that the wood absorbs from the air. Not only will this keep the wood from drying but can encourage mold.

Stacking firewood is a pretty easy job and there really isn't a right or wrong way to do it but hopefully these few tips may help you find the way that suits you best.

How to brighten up a boring bathroom

The bathroom is often the last room to get any make-over attention. It is a functional room and can become boring and tired-looking. You can decorate it using vases filled with flowers, printed rugs and towels, and the unmistakable scented candle. But, if you have some hours and a little extra cash, you can lighten up your boring bathroom into a bright and fun space to relax in.

Working with what you've got is the best way. First, clear out all of the lotions, potions and accessories from the bathroom so that you can give it a good clean. You may be surprised at how much this simple act improves the brightness in the room. Throw away any old bathing products and items that you no longer use or need.

Changing the color scheme in your bathroom may costly, but if you can afford it, repaint your bathroom. Most bathrooms are small and do not need more than $50 worth of paint. No matter what color your bathroom suite and tiles may be, painting the walls white will instantly brighten your bathroom. Before you choose your paint color, you have to know what colors will brighten your bathroom. Generally, yellows, light browns, light greens and blues will work well for bathrooms. Use a specially formulated moisture-resistant paint, to help protect the walls. Adding 2 or 3 framed pictures can give a focus to the room away from the obvious shower or bath; you can use cheap frames and paint them yourself or glue on beads, sequins or shells to match the bead curtain.

Colors will be affected by the amount of light that enters your bathroom. For example, if you have a small window that does not let in enough light, you will need even brighter colors to make up for the lack of light. However, if you have a large window that lets in enough light, you can use some other darker colors. If your bathroom does not naturally get enough light, you do not need to put up drapes or curtains.

If you use shower curtain that is looking dingy, you can either wash it with hot water and a little bleach, or replace it with a bright color that will accentuate the rest of the bathroom accessories. For example, if you have iron-wrought fixtures, you can use a taupe-colored or cream-colored shower curtain that will make your bathroom look traditional-mission.

If your bathroom window has frosted glass, there really is no need to have curtains as well. Curtains restrict the light entering the bathroom, and are a magnet for mould. Instead, why not make a simple bead curtain or one incorporating shells or ribbons, and hang this at the window instead. Take a length of thin dowel the same width as your window; using string or thin cord, thread a selection of beads on to lengths of cord the same height as your window. Tie these beaded cords onto the dowel at regular intervals. Fix an adhesive coat hook to each side of the window frame at the top, and sit the dowel on the hooks to hold it in place.

Keeping all your bathroom clutter hidden, or at least stored neatly, will make your bathroom look bigger and cleaner. Plastic crates are the most practical way of holding the plethora of gels, lotions and other grooming accouterments. You can pick colors to match your main bathroom scheme, or use a range of different bright colors and displays them in rows or stacked up as part of the overall decoration.

You can also use rugs and toilet seat covers with printed designs on them. Make sure that the designs don't clash with your shower curtains, and work well with the other components of the room. The best way to decorate is to create harmony within the bathroom. You don't want too many decorations or the bathroom will look cluttered.

For a more natural look, white-painted wood gives a clean finish, and baskets made from woven coir (coconut fiber) are durable and give a rustic feel to the room. If you have pipes that need to be boxed in, consider including some storage shelves and cupboards at the same time. The space beneath a sink unit or at one end of the bath could also be utilized to provide more storage.

By clearing away all the unnecessary hygiene items and storing them in practical and attractive containers or shelving, your bathroom will become much more user-friendly. Adding some bright sparkling accessories and a lick of paint will also help to take the boredom from your bathroom and give you a space fit for pampering yourself.

How to shampoo carpets

While taking our shoes out before entering a carpeted room and vacuuming regularly will save our carpets from wear and tear. We also have to be very careful while eating and drinking in carpeted rooms. Spills caused stains and that can ruin a carpet.

Before you throw your stained carpet out and spend a lot of money to replace it, you must try to remove the stains first. Most of times, people will end up with stains caused by coffee, chocolate, wine, pet urine, lipstick, grease, and other things that are thought hard to remove.

There are many ways to remove stains from carpets, ranging from solutions that are made from items at home to expensive commercial products. Almost every way of stain removal process depends upon the type of stains and carpets. With these considerations in mind, the best ways to remove stains from carpets can easily be chosen.

One of the best and the easiest ways to remove stains from carpets is to clean them immediately while they're fresh. If you notice fresh liquid stains on your carpet, quickly take paper towels or cotton rag to blot the stained area. Gently blot the stains with fresh paper towels or rags as much as you can. Then rinse the stained area with some water and continue to blot some more. Never scrub the stains because it may grind deeper into the fibers.

If the stains are from a semi-solid item such as peanut butter and jelly, pick up as much of the item off as possible with a blunt knife. Then blot the same way as for liquid stains. Semi-solid items are easier to clean than liquid stains, since they not absorb into the carpet fibers.

Lifestyle choices to avoid chemicals are objectionable leads some people to look for homemade solutions. A mixture of one part vinegar with one part water is highly recommended. Be aware that vinegar may leave sour smell like for a little while. For tougher stains, dust baking soda on the stain thoroughly before applying vinegar solution, blot with clean cloth and rinse.

There are many commercial cleaners found in stores that are formulated for cleaning carpet stains. A commercial solution may damage the fibers of your carpet. Therefore test a carpet cleaner on an unremarkable spot first before applying it to clean any remarkable stains. If you using a commercial carpet cleaner, make sure to follow exactly the manufacturer's instructions. Apply the recommended amount of cleaner solution into the stained area and gently rub with a clean rag from the outside to the center. This will prevent the stains from spreading and making more mess.

Now you know the best ways to remove stains from carpets. You will be surprised at how great your carpets look.

How to clean wood walls and paneling

Cleaning wood is totally different than cleaning painted walls. It can be tough work but following these simple steps will help preserve the beauty of your wood walls and paneling.

Use a product that is safe and only for wood. A good choice would be ‘Pledge’ in liquid form that you add to warm water. Another product that works well is ‘Super Shine All’; it can be used in a spray form. These products won't strip the finish of your wood and they won't leave any residue or buildup on the wood.

Now that you have the cleaning product you will be using. You have to dry clean your wood walls and paneling. This means get rid of all cobwebs and dust with a dry mop. You may also remove any nails or tacks. I suggest using a ladder or get an extending dry mop for hard to reach areas.

Do not use wet mops to clean wood walls or paneling. It allows excess water to drip. The best way to clean your wood walls is to use the spray form or a bucket with the solution in it. Always use soft cloths and nothing abrasive. Start at the top and in small sections. After cleaning a section, dry thoroughly with another soft cloth. If some areas are harder to clean because of fingerprints or grease you can use a product like Goo Gone or other citrus based cleaners. These cleaners are safe for wood walls and they remove grease, crayon, scuff marks, tape, etc.

Once your walls are clean and dry you can apply a light coat of polish like Liquid Gold in spray form or Pledge with a dry soft cloth. Newer walls may require polish but I suggest using polish on older walls because they get dry and lose their luster so a product like Liquid Gold or Lemon Oil will add shine and help preserve the wood. When polishing wood always remember to spray product on the cloth or use a drop cloth. This will prevent slip and fall accidents. For older wood walls the polish may be absorbed quickly so you can apply a second coat.

Some products such as Endust is great for dusting your walls in between cleanings and it will help to prevent dust from accumulating. Another nice thing about Endust is it doesn't cause the wax buildup that you can get from polishing over and over again. For heavy duty dirt on older walls, I've used Spic and Span and it worked very well. However, I don't recommend using it on all walls. When in doubt about what to use for cleaning your wood walls, try to contact the manufacturer or look up the type of wood your cleaning on the Internet. There should be suggestions on how to care for your type of wood walls. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Another cleaning tip for wood walls is using plastic scrapers that you can purchase at the hardware store to remove candle wax, tape and food. It won't scratch the wood and it can be used on other non scratch resistant items in your home. To maintain the beauty of your wood walls and paneling, I suggest cleaning them every 6 months. Hopefully these steps and tips will help you clean your wood walls and paneling.

How to Remove Paints from Clothes

Rub gently or use a soft brush to dislodge any stubborn remaining paint from the fibers (be very careful if treating wool or silk). Make sure all the paint is gone, and then the clothing can be washed as normal.

- For OIL-BASED paints

Scrape as much as possible off the surface of the clothing, and then use a simple detergent - undiluted to dissolve the paint. You will probably have to use quite a lot. Keep adding it until you are sure that all the paint is 'loose' from the clothing. Then, and only then, start rinsing, with plenty of plain cold water. Once you're sure all the paint is gone, the clothing can be washed as normal.

B) To remove DRIED paint from clothes:

- For WATER-BASED paints

Soak the clothing for at least 24 hours in cold water. Then, as for wet paint, rub gently or use a soft brush to dislodge any stubborn paint from the fibers. Make sure all the paint is gone, and then the clothing can be washed as normal.

-For OIL-BASED paints

You will almost certainly be unable to scrape the paint off the surface of the clothing. You will probably have to use a commercially-produced paint remover: be sure to read the instructions CAREFULLY as to whether it is usable on the material from which your clothes are made. Again, once you're sure all the paint is gone, the clothing can be washed as normal.

You could also use paintbrush cleaner, available from any DIY store, but I would not recommend this for any artificial fabrics, or for wool or silk.

Of course, prevention is always best - wear old clothes for decorating, or craft activities, or cover up with an overall.

How to decorate a dining room on a budget

It is a major attraction sight which should be tastefully decorated and not out of place.

This is a place where guests come to eat, though working with limited funds, one may think that it isn't possible to take that shabby room and turn it into something new and fresh, although this is a myth. With a limited budget, what you are left with is using the imagination to create ways to make the room look better, and it is only a matter of practice until you can indeed use your imagination creatively and effectively to style the dining room into a fresh look that makes your guests feel welcome, and you as a homeowner, feel proud.

There is definitely a thing about home decorating and costing some personal fortune. Knowing the best ways to save money and decorate under budget is an exquisite art. It does not take a lot of thinking to discover the numerous tricks involved.

Inexpensive accessories like candles and candleholders will help to add a nice glow to the dining room and change its appearance. Table cloths do a fabulous job in hiding any ugly surfaces. These new colors can be used as the color scheme for the room. See if you may have a local furniture bank. You can exchange your old furniture with any items of furniture at the bank that may be of use to you.

Try moving the furniture around in an artistic way. Make sure whatever you do leaves you with enough space to move around.

You could do some DIY jobs in the dining room, like building a fold-down shelf. These could hang off one of the walls of the dining room. It enhances entertainment and buffet pleasures. A mirror can be used in order to create light and space in your dining room.

The cabinets can be repainted to the new color scheme. Painting is one of the simplest DIY jobs around. While at that, you could completely repaint the room. By the time you are through, you might not recognize your own dining room.

Deadbolt Versus Combination Locks

How can I make such a bold statement and be so sure about it? Well, ask yourself this - "In your daily life while going about your routines, do you encounter any locks? One? Even a dozen perhaps?". Personally, within a day, I could be using up to 7 locks - 4 different keys to the doors of my house, one key for my car, one to my office building and another electronic key to the office itself. This is considered to be fairly normal. Some of you probably interact with even more than this.

What is the main driver behind having so many locks? Security of course, or at least a sense of security. A lock may not 100% guarantee prevention of someone breaking into your home, office, shop or car, but it will at the very least deter a would-be trespasser. This would also be dependent on your location. Obviously if it is notorious for break-ins or if there are other vulnerabilities of your establishment, having a lock may not be effective. The next question is then, "Why are there so many different types of locks?". Well, each type provides a different level of security and I'll provide an overview of a dead-bolts and combination locks.

One of the most common types is the dead-bolt lock. You probably have one of these on the front main door of your house. The component of the lock which prevents the door from being opened is a bolt embedded in the door. When you insert the appropriate key into the lock, turning in one direction will cause the bolt to extend into a notch (that is lined up) in the door frame while turning in the opposite direction will retract the bolt back into the door. So this type is designed simply such that the person with a key can easily gain access but more difficult for others without they key.

Another type is the combination lock, which consists of either one or more dials that you need to rotate into the correct sequence in order to unlock. With a single-dial lock, it is opened by rotating the dial in alternating directions - e.g. for the first number of the sequence, turn clockwise, then counter-clockwise for the second number followed by a clockwise rotation again for the third number and so on until the last number in the sequence. You're probably familiar with these locks on school lockers (i.e. combination padlocks) and safes. A multiple-dial lock consists of two sides - one side has several mounted discs and the other side has a pin which goes through the center of the discs. Opening this type of lock involves rotating each of the discs to their correct sequence allowing the pin to be pulled out.

How to Estimate an Interior Paint Job

For example, is it easier or more difficult to bring all the tools into the house? Are there pets or children to contend with? Are the walls dirty? Are there a lot of nail pops? Basically, what are the conditions before painting? How much time will it take to get the area ready to go on?

Protection, what is needed? What needs to be removed prior to starting? What about switch plates, lighting, pianos, grandfather clocks or anything that is expensive and will require special handling. If you think that is overkill just wait until one of your painters scratches a piano and you have to get its expensive lacquer finish redone. Again how much time to move and protect?

Preparations, how much time will it take to spackle, sand, and prime or spot prime prior to painting?

Next, measure the room, width then length. Then multiply the width times the length. That will give you the square feet of the ceiling. How much time does it take to paint a ceiling of this square footage?

Second, measure the height, then multiply the width times two, then multiply the length times two, finally take that total and multiply times the height of the walls. This will give you the square footage of the walls. Now how much time does it take for your crew to paint walls of this square footage?

Third, back up, the baseboard lineal footage is 2 times length plus two times the width. How much time does it take for your crew to paint baseboards?

Count doors, windows, shelving and any other single item such as crown molding, chair rail, etc. Add them up individually and multiply times the amount of time your crew takes to paint these items.

Are you all done measuring for painting? Great, now replace those things you removed prior to painting. Add up the time it would take.

Cleanup, figure the time it will take to remove drops and ladders etc. Now compute how much time to vacuum, wipe down etc. Put everything back into the truck, how much time did that take?

Finally, add all these times up and multiply by the hourly rate that you have calculated to be what you need to make money, and you are done.

How to Fix a Steel Gate

It may also be used to secure the home compound. This are made of different materials. They could be made with timber, steel sections or metal sheets. The home owner desires a beautiful entry into the compound. the gate may have a sentry cubicle on the side to control movement into and out of the compound. The height can vary depending on the location. If its fixed on a long driveway it can be opened by remote control.

The gate should is fixed such that the home owner can open and close effortlessly. It is important to have the posts hanging the gate very strong. The hanging post can be made of steel or concrete stanchions. This should not buckle under the weight. The hinge system should be able to open and close smoothly. On the hanging stanchion, a bell or security system can be installed. Also lighting should be provided for ensuring a lit entry or exit into the home. Also a gate sensor can be added.

Once the gate is fabricated then fixing commences. The width of the gate is measured and the support post position is established. Column pits are excavated to a depth of three feet. The stanchions are plumbed and kept straight upwards. These should also be in line. The stanchion column is then put into the excavated holes. Concrete of one part cement, two parts sand and four parts ballast is mixed and poured into the pit. It is then vibrated properly. Power points are placed on the side and top for lighting and the bell.

The gate stanchion concrete should dry for at least four days. The gate is then lifted and put into position on the hinges. If the columns are done correctly it will fit on the provide hinges. The top of the hinge is then capped by welding to prevent lifting of the gate. The tower bolt position is marked at the center of the gate. Two steel round hollow sections of one feet long are driven into the ground. A concrete surround is done to prevent movement when locking the gate.

Outdoor Solar Lights - Better Security Lights Too

Many people use them because outdoor solarlights can be very beautiful and can provide a great mood when it comes to mood lighting. You can get a good idea of the types of lights that you like to use, and you can find a really beautiful way to highlight important areas in your home or outdoor areas.

Many people use outdoor solar lightings as a great tool when it comes to their own landscaping projects. However, there are other ways to look at an outdoor solar lighting project. It is crucial to think about the various ways that you can use solar lights. Not only can they be great points to use for your landscaping, but they can also become excellent sources of security lights.

Traditionally, security lights use electricity. They are regular lights, and they are lights that require you to use power. However, have you ever thought of using outdoor solar lighting as security lights?

There are several reasons that outdoor solar lights will make excellent security lights. First of all, it is going to give you a chance to have lights that are not using electricity. This is good for the environment, and is good for your power bill. When you can cut back, even just a little bit, on the way that you spend money on electricity.

There are other reasons that you might want to consider using outdoor solar lighting for your new security lighting. It is new and improved, because the lighting is stronger, brighter, and more impressive. Working with many different ways to find excellent solar lighting - and you might begin to realize that solar lighting is actually one of the best choices for you when it comes to security lighting. More reasons?

First of all, using outdoor solar lights for security lighting allows you to have lights that work, all of the time. Security lighting can only be as secure as your electricity - so if you want to have lights that work well, even when your electricity is off, you'll be able to find them when you are using solar lighting. It is easy for you to be able to enjoy this type of lighting no matter what - because it is always going to be there. Many people enjoy the security that goes along with knowing that no matter what happens, they'll have their security lights. When your lights draw their power from the sun, you will be able to appreciate that.

Bottom line; no human made energy source can be as reliable and stable as the suns energy. Therefore, relying on suns energy for security lights is worthy of trust, more so when they come with motion detectors and automatic on and off switches.

Easy Halloween craft ideas for toddlers

One great way to get kids excited about this day is to make a craft with them. When it comes to crafts for toddlers, it's best to have all the pieces ready to go, and then to just let the kids assemble them. Here are a few ideas perfect for your little ghosts and goblins

- Construction Paper Jack-o-lantern

The construction paper jack-o-lantern is a very straight-forward craft that requires a bit more preparation on your part as far as getting pieces ready. If you trust your toddler to use a safety scissors you could go that route.

Materials:

*Orange construction paper.
(cut into circle shape beforehand)
*Yellow construction paper
(cut into various shapes like triangles, squares, rectangles beforehand)
*Glue stick

Procedure:
The procedure for this craft is very simple. Just let your toddler create whatever sort of faces they like using the yellow shapes you cut for them. They can glue on different shaped eyes, nose, and mouth to their jack-o-lantern. Then, you can use sticky tap to hang them on display.

- Lollipop Ghosts

Lollipop ghosts are very easy to make, and don't have many pieces that you need to prep ahead of time.

Materials:

*One bag of suckers, such as Dum-Dums or Blo-Pops.
*Square sheets of white fabric (about 5" x 5") You will need one square of fabric for each ghost you want to make.
*Thin rubber bands, white ribbon, or string.
*Black marker

Procedure:

Place a lollipop in the center of a white square of fabric, and pull the edges down so that it looks like the lollipop is the head of the ghost. Secure the white square by tying a bit of ribbon or string around the ghost's "neck," or use a thin rubber band (you may have to wrap it more than once.) I like the look of string the best, but rubber bands are probably easiest for toddlers.
Next, use the black marker to draw a face on your ghost. After you demonstrate one for your child, let them make as many of their own as they want. Once they get the hang of it they can easily complete many ghosts on their own.
The lollipop ghosts can be a cute addition to a trick-or-treat bowl. Or you can attach Christmas ornament hooks to the rubber bands/ string and hook them on garland to make a cute and unique Halloween decoration.

Get creative Halloween Recipes here.

DIY Loft Bed Conversion Kits - Are They Worth It?

We had searched online for the best deals in loft beds, but the selections that we liked were all out of our price range. Upon further research we discovered DIY loft bed conversion kits.

I admit I am not the most mechanically inclined person in the world. Usually if it has a difficulty of more than 4 out of 10, I can expect to struggle with the project. Regardless I really liked the price on the DIY loft bed conversion kit and ordered it. Once it came in, I carefully unpacked the pieces and read the instructions.

I was very pleased with how well it went together. The instructions were very easy to read and all of the holes were pre-drilled making the installation a breeze. I converted our daughter's traditional bed to a loft bed over a two day period, working a couple of hours each night once I got off work.

It has been assembled for a few weeks now and she absolutely loves it. We would not have been able to afford a queen size bed if we had not found the DIY kit online. We found it to be a very economic way to have a loft bed, saving space and giving her the fun and excitement of having to climb a ladder to get into bed each night.

If you are on a budget and are looking for beds like this, I would recommend looking into the DIY loft bed conversion kits.

Successfully Shopping For Ceramic Tiles Online

More and more of us are browsing and shopping online for thousands of different products. In this article I am going to provide you with some tips for buying ceramic tiles online.

The advantages of shopping line are obvious. It is convenient as you can shop from the comfort of your own home. In addition to this you are not restricted to shop opening hours and can make online purchases at any time even 3 or 4 am in the morning. My favourite benefit is that you can shop anywhere in the world and therefore get a much wider range of products to look at which is where my ceramic tiles come in.

The downsides of shopping online are real as well. However with a little bit of understanding it really is easy to find some great bargains. I recently bought a whole batch of tiles for my bathroom.

Some points to consider when buying tiles online are;

1) Seeing stock first hand - A good idea is go and physically look at tiles in your local tile store as you get to see up close what you will getting. It just a matter of getting the ceramic tiles product code and then searching using an online tile finder to get the best deals.

2) Ask for samples - With some online tiles stores you can request samples be sent to your home. This is a good final check to make sure that the quality is correct.

3) Pay with a Credit Card - As long as the store has a secure payment processor I suggest you pay with your credit card as you get maximum protection against fraud and faulty goods.
