But they do know that having a website full of quality visuals is essential. However, the trick is not finding stock photography – they are all over the internet. But using them in a way that brings out the best in your website.Â

In fact, using the wrong image can land you in several problems, including:

Adding a picture that doesn’t fit your brand.Â

Using a concept that is common on the internet.Â

Getting into legal trouble.Â

Spending money on a stock photograph that you will not use in the long term.

And surely you don’t want to focus on these problems and more. Primarily if you are concentrating on building your brand and growing your business.

Luckily, there are some ways you can fit stock photographs in your branding without compromising on the overall quality. In the guide below, let’s look at some do’s and don’ts to follow when using stock photography in web design.

Do: Go For Relevancy

Repositories of the best stock photo websites are filled with thousands and millions of photographs. They also have search options in place that let you filter out relevant photographs according to your target niche, size, color, and even orientation.Â

However, when searching for photographs, don’t be tempted to choose the first one that comes in your search. The first few pictures may be attractive, but do they fit your branding style? Do they resonate with the overall layout of your site?

The stock images highlighted in the first pages of search results may be beautiful, but if they are not on-brand, you may end up confusing the viewers. It will also make your website appear less relevant and streamlined.

Don’t: Forget Licenses

Legal stuff is often overlooked on stock photography websites. However, failing to comply with them can get you in all sorts of legal trouble, including a penalty, fine, lawsuit, and even takedown notice from the DMCA.Â

When selecting a photography website, make sure to double (even triple) check the agreements to ensure you are using them lawfully. The legal guidelines will state where you can use the pictures, for how long, and whether giving attribution is necessary.Â

You will also need to know the types of edits you can make to the stock photographs you buy. Most stock photo websites do allow simple editing. Still, it is crucial to ensure you are modifying under legal terms and conditions.

Do: Customize Your Images

As we mentioned above, you can edit the pictures as long as you follow the legal guidelines. However, it is important to remember that you cannot name or resell the stock photographs as your own creation even after customizing.Â

Here are some ways you can edit the stock photographs:

Crop your image in a variety of ways.

Add an overlay in your brand color.

Add text to convey your brand message.Â

Integrate other pictures to make them unique.Â

In short, play around with the pictures as much as possible. Just note that you cannot use the stock pictures in any pornographic material, political ads, defamatory posts, and represent diseases like AIDS.

Don’t: Choose Cliche

Unless there is a specific reason, it is best to avoid artificial-looking photographs in your web design.Â

A group of men dancing in suits, headless men pointing at floating objects, and an extra cheerful customer representative sporting a headset are just some examples of pictures that are confirmed cliches in the stock industry. They are not only unattractive but also portray fakeness in their photographs.Â

By all means, it is best to stay away from such photographs. Instead, filter around for pictures that are candid or do not appear over staged. It is also a good idea to avoid abstract figures as they are heavily overused and may hinder the originality of your work.Â

Do: Check the Competitors

Stock photographs are popular, and there is a good chance that the picture you select is being used by many other sites.

So when you select the pictures for your website, run them through Google Reverse Image Search or the TinEye tool. These tools will help you identify if the picture you chose is also found on some other site, especially those in the same niche as yours.Â

Don’t: Forget SEO

Prep your images for SEO so that they can help people find your website only.Â

For starters, stock photos have names that resonate with the agency or photographer. After you purchase and download the images, rename them to something that is more SEO-friendly. For example, if you have a picture that shows a cat playing with a ball, rename it to ‘cat-with-ball.JPG.’

You can also add SEO juice to your website by integrating keywords and phrases to Alt Tags, captions, and image titles.Â

Another element to look out for is the image size. Since heavy images can slow down the website, make sure you resize pictures as much as possible to lower down the weight. This will ensure your photographs load quickly and improve the user experience.Â

Do: Look At Quality

When looking at images for your website, make sure to emphasize the quality. Since stock photography websites get many submissions, they often neglect to vet each picture and end up with low quality.Â

However, dark, pixelated/blurry images or even shot in low light will not help you attract the audience you wish. Instead, these pictures will negatively impact your visitors, who will likely choose not to interact with your page.Â

Simply put, don’t ignore the quality of pictures. Look comprehensively at each one you select for any flaws and use the one that fits the standard you require perfectly.Â

Don’t: Forget to Add Your Own Pictures

While stock photographs may offer the easiest route, they cannot compete with the authenticity of a customized picture. And thanks to smartphones and DSLR cameras, you don’t have to be a professional to take good-looking pictures.Â

In fact, you shouldn’t rely on stock photography alone and combine both – stock and customized photos to spice up your layout.

Wrapping it up

Stock photographs are versatile, and you can use them in many areas on your website. But make sure to follow the best practices of using them to ensure your pictures are giving the value you strive for. Good luck!

The next major version of Google Chrome will start marking HTTP pages containing forms as “Not Secure.” Is your site ready for this?

There are many reasons we need secure websites. If you have an eCommerce store, it’s critical that payments and details are being encrypted and not just going across the network in plain text. But that’s not the only reason. There are a host of them. It’s all about integrity, privacy and security. Have a look at this Google Post about Why HTTPS Matters. Even simple websites can also benefit from https, as Google is now using the protocol in their ranking algorithm. So even from an SEO point of view, it’s a sensible thing to do.

This protocol is now being phased out by the TLS protocol (Transport Layer Security) but that’s another story…

Basically, these protocols are the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between the browser and the server. in the last few years, SSL certificates have become cheaper and now there is a great FREE option that is suitable for most small websites.

Changing to https is not hard. But it is important it’s done correctly. Let’s look at the process.

In my examples, I’m using WordPress as the website CMS. If you use something else, there might well be different methods. I’d have no idea as I only use WordPress for my websites.

If you are not a big time eCommerce store, this will likely be good enough for you. Obviously, you need to do your research. Paid certificates can be had for around $150 a year. but here we are only looking at the free option, as it’s so easy to implement. Depending on your hosting company, it can be anything from fully automatic to easy-peasy to implement. Contact your host to find out how to enable that part.

STEP 2. Update the WordPress Address and Site Address URLS under Settings – General. Once you have your certificate installed, you need to change the website urls to use the secure protocol. You must change both the WordPress Address URL and the Site Address URL. These can be found in the General section of the WordPress settings.

STEP 3. Better Search Replace. This is an awesome little plugin that can do a search and replace in the website’s database. This is the most efficient method for finding any instances of mixed content, by finding all instances of http://mydomain.com/ and changing them to https://mydomain.com/ It is quick and you only need to do it once. Then, you can deactivate and delete the plugin.

STEP 4. Force https via .htaccess file. There are several ways to force https, but editing the .htaccess file is the best approach. Forcing the site to be served via https ensures that every page, every visit, people are on an encrypted page. This is good for security and also peace of mind for the end user. There are also technical benefits from forcing the https via the .htaccess file, as it is a more efficient and reliable method than WordPress redirects using PHP. There is also the situation of old http links out in the wild that would not be served via https unless forced. There are also plugins, like Really Simple SSL, which do all of the above steps, and are quite popular, but the way I see it, if you do it the manual way, itâ€s done, and you have no need of the plugin (and we can all do with fewer plugins on our sites). But if you are after a quick method, check it out.

STEP 5. Test the site and look for the padlock on every page. Generally, if you have followed the steps up to now, you will see the padlock on every page of your site. If there are issues, you can use a website like https://www.whynopadlock.com/ to troubleshoot. This website shows you in detail the mixed content or other issues that are causing the padlock not to show.

STEP 6. Update site in Google Analytics and Google Search Console. This is the most complex area, and needs to be done carefully. Google see a protocol change as a site move (see here for a google post on this), so you definitely need to update Google Search Console and Google Analytics. There are numerous guides and discussions around this part of the process. See HERE, HERE and HERE.

If this post doesn’t quite hold you hand enough, or you just want a more detailed overview of the whole process, this post from Cloud Living is awesome.

What Web Platforms Will Grow Most In The Years Ahead?

Starting a successful website from scratch is almost always harder than it seems. While there are now a lot of platforms designed to help with the actual design process (even if you canâ€t code at all), nailing down a concept that will attract visitors and/or generate revenue is difficult. It requires regular management, savvy financial strategies, engaging content and, most of all, a good idea.

Now, if we could predict the next wave of popular websites and then build them to perfection, weâ€d be doing quite well. Again, this is all easier said than done. But sometimes it pays to look ahead and speculate as to what types of web platforms weâ€ll need more of in the coming years, in the hopes it might just spark a unique idea. Apart from the continued growth of the WordPress platform, these are some of the things weâ€re anticipating.

Augmented Reality Reviews

As you likely know if you have any interest in tech, thereâ€s no shortage of tech review sites online and many of them are trusted and frequented by very large audiences. However, there hasnâ€t been much of a corner carved out for augmented reality commentary just yet (though VR has produced some sites). Youâ€ll find some reviews for specific AR apps at platforms devoted to iOS and Android devices, but as the AR category expands in mobile stores we should probably all count on a number of resources emerging to help people sift through the material.

U.S. Sports Betting Speculation

Betting speculation is already big business online. There are sports and gaming sites that make references to odds, and there are of course platforms where people can already place bets. But the U.S. sports betting market may be about to explode, which means a need for more coverage. Led by a push from the NBA, U.S. sports gambling could be legal in the next few years, and as soon as it arrives itâ€s going to be a big deal. Weâ€ll see a lot of sites devoted to the activity and a new type of coverage of American sports leagues and contests.

Social Platforms

This might fall more into the app category, but itâ€s a given that social media platforms arenâ€t going anywhere. While it may seem as if Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat provide all we need in this category, there was a time when we didnâ€t see any of them coming. Thereâ€s always an opening for new and innovative social media platforms.

Verified News

As youâ€re likely aware, “fake news” has become a major problem in modern society. Because news is accessible at the touch of a screen and we often hear things from friends or even strangers rather than primary sources, false stories can spread like wildfire. Already thereâ€s talk of how to avoid fake news, and weâ€re only at the beginning of this issueâ€s timeline. Sites that either provide verified news or direct readers to it will be very valuable. For that matter even something like a more easily verified Wikipedia could emerge.

Streaming Reviews

Itâ€s somewhat surprising that these havenâ€t already become popular. While itâ€s easy to find a review of most any film or television program out there, we have yet to see a real emergence of streaming-specific reviews. For instance, imagine sites dedicated to reviewing all the material added to Netflix in a given month (as opposed to just listing it), or posting episode-by-episode reviews specific to Hulu uploads, etc. Streaming appears to be the way of the future in film and television consumption, and critical commentary has yet to truly adjust.

Very few stick their head above the crowd. But Avada, from ThemeFusion, is definitely one that does. It is the most sold WordPres theme ever on ThemeForest, and there are many good reasons for that.

I have been using Avada from almost the very start. I think I bought my first copy a few weeks after they launched. I liked the look of it, and I took the plunge. I now use it for virtually all of my sites, including this one. The last time I checked, I think they have sold over 350,000 copies, and it’s still #1 on ThemeForest after 5 years!

Choosing a theme for a new WordPress website is a difficult chore if you are not an experienced WordPress user. It’s hard to know what to try and evaluate. The overall design is important, yet you can (and should be able to) change the design enough to make the site unique anyway, regardless of the theme. No one wants their site to look like the demo site of the template…. More difficult things to evaluate are the back-end tools and admin section and the team behind the product. But these are probably more important than anything else.

What sort of customization options are there, is the admin panel laid out in a user-friendly way? What premium plugins are included? But even more important than this is the support available for the theme , and it’s a very difficult thing to evaluate before you have used it.

Avada absolutely shines in this regard. Made by Theme-Fusion, originally a partnership of an American designer and a Pakistani developer, this company had user support in mind from day one. Many themes get popular and then fall over when their client base is underwhelmed by the support offered. Avada has flourished because the team has both increased and improved the support in sync with the growth of the theme. Apart from the official support ticketing system, there is also the flourishing Avada User Group on Facebook, which currently has over 11,000 members (I am an admin there). In fact, I would go so far as to say that the reason for Avada’s phenomenal success lies almost equally between their great design and functionality, and their carefully considered approach to customer support.

Another thing you have to remember is that Avada is a multi-purpose WordPress theme. There is literally nothing you can’t do with it. But the flipside of this is that it means it’s not a pared back framework like Genesis. It’s designed for WordPress Designers and Consultants, and end users, NOT developers (though I know many developers using it). It’s a kitchen sink of a theme, designed to be able to swing the bat, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bloated mass of code. Quite the opposite. With the latest major release of 5.0, the theme was largely rewritten, and there are many options within the theme to turn off scripts and features you are not using. In the end, the proof of the pudding is load times, and a well configured Avada site loads very fast and scores very well indeed.

release is the complete redevelopment of the built-in page builder, Fusion Builder. It is now a stand-alone plugin, and will shortly be available for use with any theme. This page builder has revolutionized the way I work and has cut my production time dramatically. It’s simply amazing. And Luke and the team never rest on their laurels. They already have an ambitious list of new features to implement, including adding front-end editing to the Fusion Builder.

But time and time again, I come back to the support and documentation. Not just the official website, and the community forum there, or the unbelievably extensive documentation for Avada itself and also the newly released Fusion Builder documentation. It’s the community around this theme that is truly amazing. I have been a member of the Facebook group from the start (I think I was member #7). I have seen it grow, in just over 5 years from a few keen users to over 15,000 people from around the world, developing a great community around the theme. Even if your official support has expired, there is still help to be had, 24 hours a day.

But really, the best reason to buy Avada is that it is an absolutely awesome theme. You can build ANYTHING with it, and the ecosystem and community around it is simply the best. I cannot recommend it enough! Go Avada!

Security is a huge issue in web design and keeping your site safe from hackers is always a challenge. No site is invulnerable to hacking attacks, but there is plenty of common sense things to do to harden your site and make it much more likely to avoid the dreaded “hacked” notice. Start with these 10 tips.

1. PASSWORDS – Passwords are the gate to the kingdom. So don’t give them away. The easiest way to have strong passwords is to use a password manager, so you can use a randomised 15 digit minimum character password. Take a look at any “top 10” passwords list, and you’ll see that people still don’t get this. Don’t be one of those people. Your password should include upper & lowercase letters, numbers, and other characters. A password manager like LastPass makes this a breeze.

2. WORDPRESS UPDATES – Each time WordPress is updated, the release notes indicate which security vulnerabilities that update has fixed. The problem with this is thay hackers also see this list, and they exploit it. More than50% of WordPress websites are not updated to the current version. Is yours one of them?

3. THEME & PLUGIN UPDATES – Much the same as with WordPress updates, if you do not update your theme & plugins promptly,  you could be leaving your site wide open to malicious attacks. This is especially true if you use any of the popular plugins, as these would receive more focused attacks. The recent Panama Papers scandal; a hack of the Mossack Fonseca website, was purportedly achieved by hacking into the site through an older version of Revolution Slider that had a security vulnerability and had not been updated.

4. ADMIN USERNAME – It’s really, really simple, but your username should be anything but ‘admin.’ Neither should it be related to your name or the site URL; make it unique and complex. Again, if you use a Password manager, it can be as complex as you like. Another added thing to do, in the MySQL database, is to change the ‘nicename’Â of users whose usernames will be shown on the site. Read this article to see how to do that.

5. LOGIN OBFUSCATION – With the right code or plugin (iThemes Security plugin offers an easy way to do this), you can easily change the URL of your site’s login page (other than the default wp-admin or wp-login.php) to anything you like, for example, mysite.com/enterhere. This makes it that much more difficult for hackers to find it and attempt to log in to your wp-admin area.

6. BACK UP YOUR WEBSITE – Sometimes the best offense is a strong defense. You can fight hackers with the best security practices, but you can never be 100% secure. A full external backup in place is one of the first things you will need, if and when, your site does get compromised; don’t be caught without one. Your host will keep a number of backups, but make sure you know how many, and how easy they are to restore. Off-site backups are even more secure. BackupBuddy, Updraft Plus, and BackWPup are just a few of the most popular options. Site management tools like ManageWP also offer backup.

7. SECURITY PLUGINS – There are a range of good security plugins available. They take a bit of configuration for them to work to their fullest, but there are many guides on how to do this. The two most popular currently are WordFence and iThemes Security. They do slightly different things, and yes, it is possible to have both running. Don’t be caught with your pants down.

8. LIMIT & BE SELECTIVE WHEN CHOOSING PLUGINS -Â Plugin enumeration easily allows attackers to discover what plugins your WordPress site is using. By avoiding the installation of unnecessary plugins you automatically reduce your site’s attack surface. When choosing which plugins and themes to use, be selective. Before installation, read up and check how many downloads they have and when they were last updated. The more frequently they are updated, the more likely any security vulnerabilities are patched quickly.

9. REMOVE INACTIVE USERS – Users, especially administrators and others which have the ability to modify content, are among the weakest points of any site because, unfortunately, most users choose weak passwords. If you absolutely need to keep inactive users in your WordPress database, change their role to ‘subscriber†in order to limit their actions.

10. PROPER WORDPRESS MANAGEMENT – Â Let’s be honest – you probably don’t have time, or knowledge, to dive into the deep depths of the security of your website, server, and database. You have a business to run. In many cases, the best thing you can do for the security of your website is to hire someone to manage it for you – 24/7/365. Photografica offers a range of plans for your website’s maintenance and security.

In my business, I have a lot to do with various hosting companies. Siteground, Host Gator, Host Papa, Blue Host and VentraIP to name a few. Some are great, some OK, and some are atrocious. Today I want to look at my clear favourite, Siteground. If you are not sure how to evaluate hosting, read on.

Evaluation Factors

Cost

Location & Speed

Uptime

Customer Service

Security

User Experience

Let’s have a look at these one at a time.

Cost

Let’s face it – cost is always going to be one of the most important factors with shared hosting. And it’s hard to beat Siteground. Their cheapest hosting package, the StartUp, goes for only $3.95 a month!! Anything cheaper would be suspicious… This is an initial signup offer, and the price reverts to the standard $9.95 after your initial period has expired. The good news is you can tie in up to 3 years at that signup price. But even at $9.95 a month, Siteground remains great value, and after 3 years of great service, I can almost guarantee you won’t be moving.

The next plan up, the GrowBig, has an initial signup price of $7.95, and a standard price of $14.95. The main differences between the StartUp and the GrowBig is that you can host as many domains as you want (or more accurately until your 20GB of space if used up). There is also a little trick if you’re interested in this plan. Go to the sign up page and then go as if to leave the page. A popup will appear, giving you a further $1 discount, bringing it down to $6.95 per month, or an amazing $250.20 for 3 years of hosting (if that trick still works..)

Their top level shared hosting plan is the GoGeek. This is really excellent value at $14.95 per month. This offers a full 30GB for as many domains as you like, with allowance for a LOT of traffic. It also has advanced backup features as well as staging and larger server allocations etc. For a full comparison of the three shared hosting plans, visit this link. It’s going to depend on your requirements and experience as to which plan to choose, but personally I think the GrowBig is the best value.

So this is where a CDN (Content Delivery Network) and Caching come into the picture. Siteground also offers leading edge technologies in these areas.
One of the most annoying things that can happen to your website is that it goes down. HostGator customers know all about that! Just last week, ALL Hostgator sites in Australia went down, for more than a day!!

Siteground offers a way to check on their uptime from their website, and you can also see the current and total uptime for your own website as well. In over three years of hosting my own sites with Siteground, I’ve yet to have discovered any downtime at all, except for a pre-notified occasion when they upgraded the server. Enough said.

This is the area where Siteground SHINES. They offer great customer service! And I know. I use it ALL THE TIME! There are three types of customer support, Telephone, Live Chat and Support Tickets. They are all answered very quickly. Live Chat and Telephone, almost instantly. Support tickets as well, are answered within 10 minutes. Try HostGator or HostPapa for that, they can take up to an entire day or more to answer… But not all support is equal. In my experience I find a chain of experience as you go up the list. I rarely use telephone support, as I’m mostly looking for Technical Support, but it’s fine for admin related issues. Live Chat is great for a quick discussion around a subject, but you are often asked to log a support ticket anyway if it’s a technical issue. Chat seems to offer a slightly higher level of support staff than the telephone, but it’s the Support Tickets that are answered by the most highly qualified staff. So I go straight to them. I never wait for more than 10 minutes for a reply and the level of support is simply great. I have once or twice had a slightly less than satisfactory answer (you have to be trained sometime) but after using their own ratings system for tickets (also works for chat) the ticket was opened again by a supervisor and they were quick to get back to me with profuse apologies and a better answer. It is in the area of Customer Service I would give Siteground my highest rating. All areas of their service excel, but if customer service doesn’t work, the whole service sucks. Siteground are smart enough to have figured this out. 10 out of 10 guys!

This is another very important area, and one where Siteground is totally on the job. Siteground specialise in WordPress (and Joomla) and their security measure are way above the standard. See this page for more details, or watch the video below. From my own personal experience, Siteground were quicker than anyone to make changes when there was a big threat WordPress last year. Security is a huge issue, and of course it’s impossible to make a site that can’t be hacked, but if you have good security practices with your site, Siteground will certainly do their part to keep you safe.

Finally, this is a measure of all the other things combined. How is it to be a Siteground customer? Well, in my experience, it’s great. I’ve been a customer for over three years, and I’ve got around 30 sites (both my own and clients) currently running on Siteground. The website is easy to use. Their support is fantastic. The service is fast, affordable and secure. What more could you want?

Well, not everyone can survive on shared hosting. You might have a site that gets hundreds of thousands of visitors a month. Or you just might need the added features and bandwidth of a more dedicated server. Siteground also offer Cloud Hosting and Dedicated Hosting for you. This review though will be perfect for the vast majority of website owners, who are looking for a cheap and decent experience on shared hosting. For my money, SITEGROUND offers just that.

The topic of resizing images for the web is a relatively simple, yet ridiculously complex one, at the same time. And it’s also one where there is an awful lot of misinformation floating around, even from professionals. But a lot of people have a need for basic foundational skills when it comes to understanding and resizing digital images for various purposes. Hence this post…

Huge caveat here: My primary field of knowledge is in photography. I have been fiddling with cameras my whole life, and have taught photography and digital imaging at local colleges and independently for the last ten years (visit iTeachphotographers for more on that), and I feel like I have a  reasonably authoritative voice on the topic. I also design, host and maintain WordPress websites. While I can read and write HMTL and CSS, I am more a designer than a coder, and I don’t profess to be know everything about the technical intricacies of web design. And I certainly don’t profess to knowing everything there is to know about pixels either, particularly about pre-press and the printing industry. So if, in spite of my experience and research, I am misinformed or mistaken about some point or other, I welcome any corrections.

Digital imaging capture devices (aka cameras, but also scanners) have a fixed number of pixels they can capture in one image. A Canon EOS 5D MkIII for example can capture an image at 5,760 x 3,840 pixels. If we multiply those together we get 22,118,400 pixels, which reflects that it is a 22 Megapixel camera (22 million pixels).

A Nikon D800 captures a whopping 7,360 × 4,912pixels (a 36.3MP camera). The top of the line Phase One Digital Camera back, the IQ180, captures a staggering 10328 x 7760 pixels (over 80 million pixels!). So, pixels are finite and are linked to the capture device. Pixels are our starting point. They are the raw material of our images, whether we are are printing or just displaying the image on a screen.

The other main player in the story is resolution. Resolution has many different meanings, and is quite complex when you look into it. Broadly speaking though, resolution is basically referring to the detail an image has. The higher the resolution, the more detail there is. But in this article, the main type of resolution concept I want to introduce is called pixels per inch, otherwise known as ppi. The best way to think about how resolution works together with the number of pixels captured in an image, is that “the number of pixels is determined by the capture device, but pixels have no fixed size“. A pixel is a unit of a digital image, but overall resolution depends upon the size of the pixels (and the viewing distance). The smaller the size of a pixel, the higher the resolution of the image will be and the clearer the image will be.

DPI is a printing term, and it stands for DOTS PER INCH. Printers lay their ink down in dots, and this figure is not the same as PPI. Dots have space in between them, and pixels don’t. DPI doesn’t have any real relevance to our discussion today.

PPI on the other hand, which stands for PIXELS PER INCH, is a term that relates to digital images. Pixels, or picture elements, as we have established, are what digital images are made up of, and are square. The terms DPI and PPI are NOT interchangeable, and PPI is the correct term to use when talking about digital images. I’m not going further into the whole DPI / PPI thing here, but there are some good articles going into much detail on this subject here, here and here.

As you can see here in the Photoshop Image Size dialog, Figure 1.1, digital image information is presented. The Dimensions section shows the aforementioned pixel dimensions of the image, in this case 3840 x 5760. This dialog can be used in many ways, but what I want you to take note of is the physical dimensions listed (12.8″ x 19.2″). This shows us the physical size of the image if it were to be printed, by taking the number of pixels, and dividing it by the number of pixels per inch. In this example, we have 5760 pixels on the longest length, and if we divide that by 300 (the PPI) we get an image of 19.2 inches.

What this shows us is that print size is simply a result of how tightly we squash together the pixels we have. If we increase the ppi, say to 400, without resampling the image (adding to or removing from the total number of pixels), the document size goes down to 14.4 inches. If we spread the pixels further and reduce the ppi to say 240, it becomes a 24 inch document. This what I mean when I say pixels have no fixed size.

If we wanted to print an 8″ x 12″ print from the image this dialog represents, how do we go about resizing it correctly?

Firstly, we have to understand what resampling is. In a nutshell, resampling is resizing an image by reducing or increasing its number of pixels. So, if we want to change the size of the print but keep the resolution at 300 ppi, which is a common standard from a lot of professional photo labs, we simply type the new dimension into the dialog, and Photoshop will throw away or create the needed number of pixels to get the dimensions to work. Now look at Figure 1.2 below. If, for example, we type 12 inches into the height field, the resultant dialog would look like this. Note how changing the height to 12 from 19.2 has two effects. One is that the width now becomes 8. This is simply because the aspect ratio of the image (2:3) is the same aspect ratio as an 8×12″ print, so changing one to 12″ means the other one automatically becomes 8″. If the image did not have the same aspect ratio as our desired 8 x 12″, then cropping would be needed instead, but that’s another story for later.

The second change we can see is that the pixel dimensions have changed. Photoshop has thrown the un-needed pixels away (by way of a very complex algorithm no doubt), resulting in an image that is now only 3600 pixels on the longest length. This gives us the correct relationship between the document dimensions, the resolution and the number of pixels. 3600 pixels, spread out at 300 pixels per inch gives us 12 inches of image. If we were to change the resolution of the image with resample ticked, the document size would remain the same, and again, the pixel dimensions would be altered to suit.

A final note here is that we can always change the resolution of an image without it affecting the number of pixels in the image. This is important to grasp. The resolution (ppi) is simply a printing instruction. If we change the resolution without changing the number of pixels in an image (by making sure Resample Image is unchecked), we DON’T change the size of the file either. The only two factors controlling file size are number of pixels and image format and compression (OK, there’s arguably a third factor which is the amount of detail in the photo, which affects compression). When we uncheck the Resample Image checkbox, the pixels are greyed out in the dialog box and the only thing that can change when changing the ppi is the document size. And as I’ve said, this has no effect on file size. But it is useful and important to be able set the desired ppi when printing to different devices, and doing it this way doesn’t affect the pixels.

It doesn’t hurt, but it’s not important. The ppi of an image makes no difference to the file size and neither does it make any difference to the visual appearance of an image on a monitor. It would of course have an effect on how big an image was printed as it is a printing instruction, but when viewed in a browser, it is the monitor itself that determines how much space the pixels take up on the screen. Let’s look at the three images below. The first has been saved at 72 ppi, the second at 300 ppi and the third at 1000 ppi. See any difference? No, of course you don’t. They all share the same physical pixel dimensions (300 x 450 px), and that’s the only thing the browser cares about, so the logical instruction of ppi makes no difference unless we print them. So hopefully, that’s all you need to put that old chestnut to bed. PPI has no effect on file size, and neither does it affect on-screen appearance.

But it’s not a fixed number and nowadays it’s a lot more on most monitors. Some screens are around 96 ppi, some are up around 120 ppi, while the latest screens on tablets are achieving mind blowing resolutions of over 500 ppi (Retina eat your heart out). To figure out exactly what resolution your monitor has, simply measure the width of the screen area in inches (not the whole monitor) and then find out what the native resolution is. My monitor’s native resolution is 1920 x 1080 (full HD) and my screen width is 18.622 inches. This gives me a screen resolution of  just over 103 ppi. In other words, 103 pixels in an inch of screen real estate. Just to be thorough, I tested this by resizing an image to 1030px and opened it. And yes, it measured exactly 10 inches across on my screen. This is an area of much debate, and it is generally print designers who argue about these numbers. Design is not just screen based, and ppi and dpi have major implications in the print world. But my essential point remains. For web based viewing of images, it’s the screen resolution, in conjunction with the number of pixels, that determines how big the image is displayed on a  monitor, not the inbuilt ppi instruction in the image. Another very interesting article discussing this topic is The Myth of DPI. It has its own inconsistencies (a pretty big one even in the title, as he confuses dpi with ppi from the start) but it is essentially a good read. Even perhaps more interesting and informative than the article itself though, are the comments. There are loads of them, many from quite educated graphic designers with a wealth of knowledge, and the discussion gets quite heated at times. If you have a spare half an hour and the interest, you will learn a lot by reading the various perspectives of web and print designers, and those whose workflow does require a bit more consistency and awareness about the ppi of images.

Basically, you resize the image in pixels at the size you want it to display. Did I say simple? Well unfortunately, here we enter a completely different world of pain, that of pixel based web design. But at least you don’t have to worry about ppi ;). If, for instance you had a WordPress or HTML template that you know is 1100 pixels in width and you wanted an image to fill the content area, then around 1100 pixels in width would be a good size. With resizing images for the web, the number of pixels is the only relevant detail. Forget the ppi of the image, and remember it’s website theme, the resolution of the screen and the number of pixels in the image that will determine the size of the presented image on screen (disregarding CSS and Retina and some JavaScript at this point). You could argue that it makes sense to set the ppi to 72 anyway. Fair enough, I suppose. It would give consistency. I only rail against the mistaken belief that it is important to do so. If you use Save for Web in Photoshop, you might find it doing it for you anyway. A quirk of the software is that if you save the image with metadata, it won’t change the ppi (as that’s in the metadata), but if you strip the metadata out when saving (by choosing None), and then open the image in Bridge or Photoshop again, you will see that it’s now set to 72 ppi. I believe this is because the field can’t be empty, and so Save for Web just puts in the default value (which Adobe has set at 72 ppi). I use Photoshop to resize my images, but you can use virtually any decent image editor. You can even do it online with services like http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ and http://www.picresize.com and many others.

One of the biggest difficulties for web designers over the last decade or so was always what size images should be. Web design is a mixture of rendered, flexible elements like text and fixed, pixel based elements like images. Screen resolutions come in all sorts of sizes, but to design a web site with pixel based elements, you have to determine how wide your content area is going to be. There’s no point putting a 2000 px wide image in a webpage if 90% of the population are using screens with a  maximum 1024px resolution. The image is just going to be too big to be seen on the screen. So determining your audience and designing to them was always a big part of the process. It has been changing a lot though in the last decade. You can define image size with CSS or HTML (i..e upload an image that’s 800px wide and tell the browser to display it at 400px wide), and there are also java scripts that can automatically resize an image to fit different screen resolutions and new vector based formats like svg are coming through. But designing for the most common resolution of the day is still a major consideration. The most common resolution today is 1366 x 768 (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp) but with the explosion of different form factors, even that particular resolution has only 34% share. Obviously with responsive templates and the like, a lot of changes are going on in the web design space when it comes to images and how to deal with them. But the most basic part of getting started in this area is understanding that unless you have a technology at play that will repurpose images on the fly, you are best off resizing your images to fit your template and your audience. If you look at the current WordPress templates for example, most have a content container width of around 1100 – 12000px. This is to ensure that the content container will never exceed the resolution of the screen. As less than .5% of all desktop users have resolutions less than 1024px, this is a safe bet. In the next year or two, my guess is we’ll see a jump to 1300px or so, as 1024px resolutions now comprise only 2% of users, while Retina style resolutions are increasing quickly. For years I had a photoblog, and I uploaded photos several times a week. It was my practice to upload images at 800px width if they were landscape oriented, and 650px if they were portrait. At the time, that meant that the images would largely fill the screen of up to 95% of my audience. These days, an 800 px image on 27″ iMac looks rather small. But it would still look pretty good on most laptops and tablets. Retina displays have made things even more complex.

With CSS you can tell an image to fit a certain percentage of the container, and with some javascript (Lightbox and the like) has the ability to dynamically increase or decrease the size of the image depending on the resolution of the screen. I don’t know a whole lot about this side of things, not being too much of a coder, but I can see a time when we just upload a large image and the code helps us display it in all all sorts of sizes, We’re pretty much there already, but not quite. You can also use HTML as I’ve said earlier to display an image at a size other than it’s original size. Trouble with this, is you often get artifacts (jagged lines) and lose quality in the image. You are also downloading a bigger file, only to present it at a smaller size. Responsive templates obviously do this sort of thing today, as images get squished down to fit on a  tablet or  mobile phone. All this sort of dynamic resizing is way beyond the scope of this article, and any knowledge I have, so I invite someone who knows about that side of images for the web to step up and educate us all with a similar article.

It outputs to one of four file formats, gif, png and jpg, plus, most recently, svg. Let’s start with the most commonly used format, jpg. This is the best format for continuous tone images for the web. They can be heavily compressed, while still retaining a lot of their detail. As noted before, there are two main things that determine file size – the number of pixels in the image and the compression applied when saving as a jpg. ‘Export As’ is designed to be used on images that are already resized, as it is primarily a compression tool, but even if you load a full size image into it, it will load anyway after warning you it wasn’t designed to do so. You can then resize the image as well, but I prefer to resize the image first using the image size dialog and then compress for web using ‘Export As’.

The basic compression choice comes in the form a slider that you set anywhere from 0 to 100. In the example above, it took a 410.7kb image and reduced it to only 74.1kb at 50% quality. How much you compress is up to you, but I find the best balance for size and quality to be around the 50 mark. The compression will also depend on the amount of detail in the image (the more detail, the less redundancy is possible). Gif used to be the traditional format for graphics, like logos and such, as they support transparency and a smaller colour palette, but these days png is the default format for those type of files. Png files support transparency, which is very useful in web design, but pngs are a bit large, even out of the ‘Export As’ dialog. That said, there are ways to further reduce the size of pngs, including a great little online tool https://tinypng.com/ which compresses the png file while retaining transparancy. As a basic rule of thumb, use jpgs for photographs on the web and png for graphics. For a much more in-depth look at these formats, check out this excellent  article on sixrevisions.com

I’m very interested in digital asset management, but colour management: yawn…. I’ll do my best to not make a fool of myself. In fact, to be safe, I will simply say that when saving images for the web, it is best to ensure they are saved with an sRGB colour profile, as this matches most closely the gamut of a monitor. Adobe RGB has a larger gamut, but images in this colour profile can look very flat and washed out on the web. Most cameras shooting jpgs are set to shoot in sRGB anyway, but if you are shooting RAW, you have to set the profile yourself when the data becomes an image. If you use Save for Web, you can get it to convert to sRGB when saving, which is probably the easiest way to go about it. It can also embed the colour profile as well, for those few browsers that actually check to see if an image has one.

(OK, OK, I’m a nerd. Get over it). As I mentioned before, aspect ratio is inherent in the captured image, as it comes from the capture device. If you want a square image, you either have to shoot it with a 1:1 aspect ratio (Hasselblad anyone?) or you need to crop, which is totally different from resizing. Cropping is both resizing and changing the aspect ratio. Cropping is something to keep in mind when shooting. You might know you want a 1:1 shot, and so you compose a certain way in camera as if you were shooting with a 1:1 ratio. Or you can creatively crop after you have taken the image, finding new images in the image by selective cropping (as long as you have plenty of pixels to start with you won’t lose too much quality unless you crop away most of the image, and particularly not if you’re just going to web). Over the course of centuries, we have become used to certain aspect ratios in our two dimensional visual art. Many have their foundation in mathematics, or in that strange place where aesthetics and mathematics meet. The Golden Ratio is a good example of this (this is the “perfect” ratio). The beauty and simplicity of the square is of course another. Digital SLRs create images in a 3:2 ratio (close to the Golden Ratio but not exactly). TVs and computer monitors were commonly in the 4:3 ratio, as are most compact cameras and 16:9 is now a common wide screen ratio. The point of all this is that aspect ratios matter. When you crop, stick to an established aspect ratio than to just crop willy nilly. This is where some web designers, particularly WordPress template designers, could do a lot more work. Images in WordPress is another complex topic, as there are so many other things at play when dealing with templates and columns and forced resizing and WordPress image resizing etc, but personally I think it’s best to stick to a bunch of established aspect ratios so that if you have to crop an image to re-purpose it, you always do it in a consistent manner.

Hosting is the link between your content and your readers, and it needs to be solid as a rock. Before I explain my own hosting choices, let’s look at some of the most important attributes and features of a hosting company and the questions you need to ask.

Cost

C’mon. We all know this is important to everyone. If you’re an SME, you can afford world class dedicated hosting, and this article is not for you, but individuals, solopreneurs and very small businesses are always running on a budget, and so they are looking for the best value hosting they can find. This is shared hosting of course, but it doesn’t have to be rubbish at all. The range of prices you will pay for shared hosting is enormous, anywhere from $3-$50 a month. Finding that sweet spot between value and features is a difficult job, but starting with the best value plans and researching the companies is a good way to start. Do they have good reviews? Have you tried googling, “hosting company + review”? Don’t assume because one company is charging $30 a month, their hosting is way better than one offering a special deal of $4 a month. In the hosting jungle, it’s quite possible the $4 deal actually offers much better hosting. I’ve had clients paying $50 a month per site for limited hosting and not even getting any support. So it makes sense to start with the cheaper plans, avoiding the obvious nobodies and resellers, looking for the company who is offering great value, but also great service. Research is the key.

Location

While this can be important, it’s nowhere near as important as it once was, and it depends on your site and your viewer’s connections. If you have a global website, it might be best if your server is physically located in the United States. If you have a site that services only a small geographical region in Australia, then a server in the States might slightly slow things down (but remember we are mostly talking milliseconds to a few seconds here, so this is not a huge issue). Some hosting companies will also offer a range of locations for their servers, so you can choose the best one for your website. It might be the States, Europe or the Asian Pacific region.

Uptime

This is obviously a big issue. I have quit hosting companies because of it. I got sick of clients ringing several times a month telling me their site was down. Any hosting worth paying for will have an uptime north of 99%, and preferably close to 100%. Scheduled downtime is sometimes unavoidable, but again, good hosting companies will plan ahead and give you plenty of warning.

Experience & Security

Now that websites are no longer simple html and css files, but more often than not database driven dynamic Content Management Systems like WordPress and Joomla etc, it’s now important that your hosting company supports and has experience with you platform of choice. The more experience they have the better. A good hosting company will stop security breaches at server level, stopping them from infecting your site. They might even offer extras connected to the specific platforms, like auto installers and updaters. If you’re using WordPress or another CMS, it’s important to choose a host that understand that application very well and takes their security very seriously.

Customer Service

This is the elephant in the room. And it’s a huge elephant. You might think you don’t need much customer service with hosting, that it all should just work. And yes it should. But setting up new sites, transferring them, backing them up, restoring them in the event of disaster; there are a lot of instances when customer service is not only a good thing, it’s an essential thing. Good customer service is the key to a smooth hosting experience, and a lot of hosting companies really suck at it. It should be 24/7, and be available in a variety of forms, from support tickets, chat and telephone.

Siteground

Siteground is the company I have chosen as my host. After much research and reading reviews I gave them a go, and in the two years I have been a customer, I have been positively surprised time and time again.

They have AWESOME customer support. I hardly wait more than 10 minutes for my support tickets to be answered. Admittedly, I am on a plan with priority support, but even when I wasn’t they answered the tickets just as quickly. They also have a local phone number, chat options, and are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. That’s service. And the best thing is that they have solved all my issues very promptly, and the only single time I wasn’t entirely satisfied with a response, and let them know, I got a message from senior support very quickly taking care of the issue personally and apologising for the staff member (who was still under training).

Siteground have been in business 10 years now, and are no fly by night hosting company. They have enormous experience in both WordPress and Joomla, and have a range of extras on the provided Cpanel that can assist CMS users, including Script installer, auto-updating, and a great new caching plugin. When there was a recent worldwide WordPress threat, they stopped it at the server level, and are always updating and improving security at the server level, as well as providing tools for the user to secure their own site. They also run a very active blog, which lets users know about the latest equipment updates and about features they might not know about.

As far as uptime goes, I have a monitor in my hosting account which tells me the uptime of my hosting over the last year, and it’s sitting on 100%. Bit hard to beat that! And because the websites on my server are primarily geared to an Australian audience I have chosen that my sites are hosted on the servers in Singapore to cut down any trans-Pacific lag. Best of all though,  I can host as many websites as I want on my hosting plan, and that plan is available for only $7.95 a month!!! After the initial booking period it’s $14.95, but even that is dirt cheap for this sort of service.

So do yourself a favour and lock in three years of awesome hosting at unbeatable rates. You won’t be disappointed. You even get a FREE Domain name for one year!! If I have at all convinced you of their virtues, please use my affiliate link and go get yourself some of the best and cheapest hosting this side of Sofia!

The Internet is a great tool for communication, freedom of speech and democracy (as well as commerce and entertainment of course). On the Internet, everyone is equal (at least in theory) and everyone can have a voice! Getting heard is another issue, but for now, letâ€s look at how we get our own little patch of turf on the net.

There are three main elements in getting a web site up and running. Let’s take them one by one.

Domain Name Registration

The first is a domain name. An example of a domain name would be mywebsite.com. The first step then, towards a website, is registering a domain name. Fortunately this is very easy. There are many Licensed Registrars that sell domain names. Hosting companies often give away free domain names when you purchase a hosting package. And it can be a smart idea to register your domain name with your hosting company to simplify the invoicing process. But in the end, it doesn’t matter who you register your domain name with. You can always connect it with your hosting, regardless of where itâ€s registered.

The costs involved and availability of the name depends on the type of domain extension you want to use. Dot com extensions (.com) are the cheapest and can cost as little as $3, while premium domain extensions like .info or .xxx are much more expensive. For most people though, either a local domain name (.com.au or .net.au) or an international domain name (.com) is the best choice. Information, rules and guidelines concerning eligibility are available online on the auDA website. This information can help you determine your eligibility for a ‘.com.au†or ‘.net.au†domain extension, which are the two types of domain name extensions most appropriate for commercial entities in Australia. Remember, a domain name is not something you purchase; itâ€s something you are licensed to use for a specified period of time. Before that period expires, it needs to be renewed. This is an ongoing cost.

Hosting

Once you have registered your domain name, you need somewhere for your website to live. Put very simply, this is on a server; a computer that is connected to the Internet and ‘serves†up your site for the world to see. Hosting services are as varied as domain name registrars and come in a variety of forms. Shared hosting is the cheapest and can be had for as little as $40 a year. A more typical low end hosting cost though would be closer to $100-150 per year. Business hosting with more features and security might cost closer to $500 per year. But this is a very fast moving market and prices are changing all the time. It is also an area where in the most cases you get what you pay for. Choosing a host requires a reasonable amount of research or a good recommendation. Some people go for a locally based host, thinking the load times with will be quicker if their host is based in Australia. This thinking is logical enough, but there are many, many factors that affect load time, and many US based hosting solutions have data centers in the Asian Pacific region as well, and will host your files close to home.  In the end, good service is one of the most important factors to consider with hosting, so a good reputation and a good recommendation goes a long way. I recommend SITEGROUND for cheap hosting and great service.

Website

The third brick in the puzzle is an actual website. These are the physical files which hold the information that is displayed in a web browser when someone visits your website. So when someone types in www.mywebsite.com.au into the address bar of a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer etc.) the browser connects with your server (or a local cached version of your site) and serves up the files that make up your site. There are a lot of options when it comes to generating that content, so weâ€ll go through the main ones.

Types of Websites

Do It Yourself Website Builders

There are a variety of free and paid web services that allow you to make a website using a graphical editor that requires no coding ability. Generally they are easy to use but limited in design scope and flexibility. Often they are branded with advertising if they are free. Wix is one example of these services. If you have no budget, want a personal site and are not fussy with your design considerations, these might be a viable option. They are not suitable for a commercial website though, as they often have a very amateur look and lack the flexibility and features of a professionally built website. As well as that, you have to evaluate your own design skills. Web design is a complex and well thought out process and one shouldn’t under-estimate what a professional designer brings to a site. It’s just like photography, Just because you might own a  $2000 DSLR, it doesn’t necessarily make you a good photographer.

HTML/CSS

These are two of the main languages used to build websites. HTML stands for Hypertext Mark-up Language and CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. Explaining these two technologies may help put websites in historical and future contexts. HTML has been around from the first days of the web, and is the foundation of how websites work. Essentially HTML is a set of tags that explain to the browser how the content of the file should be displayed. For example, if I put the word ‘Title†inside a heading 1 tag it would display as large text dependant on how the CSS specified the tag h1

HTML essentially defines the structure and content of a document and the CSS controls the styling of it. CSS Zen Garden is a website that eloquently shows how CSS and HTML can work together to separate content and styling.

Static Websites

Until relatively recently, most websites were coded by web designers in HTML and CSS. This sort of website is known as a static website, meaning that the content will not change until someone recodes the pages and uploads them again to the server. This sort of website is rapidly going out of fashion for various reasons, but the main one is that they are harder to add extra functionality to and require specialist web designers to update or change. There are many millions of static websites still on the web, and they still do a great job for many people, but for a new site, I wouldn’t generally recommend it, unless you know the content of the site will not change and you donâ€t want to add any new content to it.

Dynamic websites

The newer way to make websites is based on a MySQL database. These websites are considered ‘dynamic websitesâ€, as they are generated by the browser when a specific page is requested, taking the content from the database and the styling from a theme (a mixture of HTML / CSS and PHP; another coding language) Dynamic websites are made in Content Management Systems (CMSâ€s) and the most popular of these is WordPress. Other popular CMSâ€s are Joomla and Drupal. These are open source, free applications that control the websiteâ€s content. There are also proprietary CMSâ€s like Adobeâ€s Business Catalyst, which are designed more for bigger websites and require the use of a developer to set up.

Unlike HTML / CSS static websites, which are developed locally and then uploaded to the server, CMSâ€s are typically installed on the server and changes are made live on the net. So if you go in and update your phone number, the change is there on your website immediately. The main advantage of these types of sites is that once they are up and running, it is quite possible for a computer savvy end user to administer and update, even totally changing the appearance of the site by adding a new “theme”. They donâ€t require coding knowledge (though it certainly helps and is needed for advanced development) and they use a graphical user interface, much like a word processor, in a browser to make changes to the site. For a professional looking site however, they can still require the services of a web developer to design and build them, and customise them initially with the look and functionality you want. As I’ve mentioned previously, the design of a website should not be underestimated, and thatâ€s where a good designer can make the world of difference.

Hosted Solutions

This final type of site is a combination of the above technologies. These are managed solutions, built on either an open source or proprietary CMS. They typically include both hosting and an easy to use graphical interface to administer and design the site. There are a large number of these solutions and they tend to service industry clusters. I am only really aware of ones that serve the photography industry. They are suitable for photographers and other visual artists who want high end functionality (like shopping carts and secure payment etc.) but they are designed to be easy to use and donâ€t require the end user to have coding knowledge. They are however at the top end when it comes to price as they are a subscription based service. For professional photographers however, they are possibly the best option available. Some of the leaders in this area are livebooks.com, photoshelter.com, zenfolio.com, 4ormat.com and smugmug.com to name but a few. If you have a decent budget, and are looking for a very slick, professional presence with high end functionality and the ability to self-administer the site, these are well worth a look.

How do I choose?

Like anything else, making choices in web design is best done by research, analysis of personal requirements and setting and sticking to a budget. Personally, I think WordPress websites currently offer the best mixture of affordability, usability, customisation, and future growth options. They are not for everyone, and are not without their detractors or issues, but show me a perfect technology anywhere…

Web Design Sunshine Coast

I make WordPress websites, starting from $895. I can also offer professional photography and copy writing as add-ons to the service (I have a Diploma of Photography and a BA in Communications). Once your site is completed, I also offer WordPress training (I also have a Cert IV in Training and Assessment and 5 years teaching experience) at an affordable rate, to allow you to take control of your own site into the future.
There are of course a million web designers and web developers out there. Some will charge $4000+ for a site, while others might charge only $500. I will only take on a job if it is within my capabilities, and I offer a personal guarantee of high quality workmanship and attention to detail. If your site is too complex for me, I can suggest more experienced developers to take control of the project. Check out my web design page to see some examples of my work, and drop me a line if you have any questions.

I have a beautiful daughter named Scout. And today she turns 12!

I love her to the moon and back! She is just amazing!

She’s so full of  fun, you can see it in her eyes. She is a girl of many faces, but always full of the joy of life.

She has taught me so very much in her 12 short years. She is one of my biggest teachers in life. She lets me know when I upset her, and she lets me know when I have treated her well.

She opens her soul to me and asks me to love her. She humbles me.

She is smart as a whip, and as beautiful as life itself. She has the voice of a songbird, and the wit of a poet.

A bit clumsy she may be, but in all the universe I could never wish for another to be my daughter. I love her with all my heart, even when I don’t manage to love her with all my presence. But she teaches me still.

I am so incredibly thankful for her presence in my life. She has made me a better person, and I want to spend many more years with her, holding her hand. We have so much to share.

I love you Scout, and I want the world to know how incredible you are!

Happy birthday!!!!
