Madonna first reached the chart’s top tier the week of June     16, 1984, when “Borderline” rose to its No. 10 peak. She had     last ranked in the region with “4 Minutes,” featuring Justin     Timberlake and Timbaland, the week of June 28, 2008.

As previously reported, “Luvin’” jumps 7-6 on the Digital     Songs survey with 165,000 downloads sold (up 44%) in the list’s     tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The period     encompassed the first full week following Madonna’s performance     of the song at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis (Feb. 5).

The track, slides, however, 28-59 on the Radio Songs chart     (20 million audience impressions, down 54%, according to     Nielsen BDS). “Luvin’ ” had benefitted last week from special     promotion on Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s more than     50 monitored pop stations, which played it at the top of every     hour from Friday, Feb. 3, at 9 a.m. ET until the big game’s     kickoff.

Back in the fall of 1998, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey set aside their long-rumored rivalry and came together to record a duet, “When You Believe,” for the animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” An interview with the two divas from that time is one of the many rare moments unearthed for MTV’s live 30-minute tribute to the late singer, entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,”airing tonight (February 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV.

Asked about the song and whether they’d ever experienced a miracle in their own lives, Houston was the first to respond, telling MTV, “Yeah, I have. That baby sitting right up there. That’s my miracle.”

She was referring, of course, to a then-5-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, her only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the passing of her mother, and was herself rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died, to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center less than 24 hours after her death. Bobbi was said to be “hysterical, exhausted and inconsolable,” sources close to the situation told TMZ.

After Carey responds, “I don’t have a child, so I can’t say the same thing, but maybe one day I will,” Houston turns to her peer for a candid moment that seems like more of an aside between two new friends than an interview sound bite.

“When you do, you will realize that is the ultimate miracle. If you think you’ve got records and you’ve done all this stuff and all that stuff, [it's] nothing like that,” Houston says. “That’s a true love that costs nothing. Unconditional love.”

Though they always insisted they were always on friendly terms, rumors of a rivalry between Houston and Carey persisted throughout the ’90s. Indeed, they were often pitted against each other on the music charts and by critics who declared their respective talents to be comparable. Even after they chose to silence rumors by recording “When You Believe” and conducting interviews together, the buzz continued. Some critics even believed they were trying to “outdo each other” during their performance of the song at the 1999 Academy Awards.

In a small lounge at Starstruck Studios, a leading Nashville recording studio, singer Charles Kelley stretches his tall, lanky frame across the carpeted floor. Hillary Scott, the trio’s other lead singer, sits on an L-shaped leather couch facing a large TV and a menacing pair of speakers. Instrumentalist and backing singer Dave Haywood has pulled up a chair to be close to the conversation. With not a single mobile device in sight, the conversation is flowing.

Pop success hasn’t changed Lady Antebellum’s direction or attitude. The trio, formed in 2006, is staying true. They’ve tasted big-time mainstream success, but they won’t let it sidetrack them. “We can’t feel like we’ve got to live up to that every time,” says Kelley, the most philosophical of the three. “Because it just happened out of nowhere.”

The “it” Kelley refers to is 2009′s “Need You Now,” the career-making single written by Lady Antebellum and Josh Kear. It propelled the group into another stratosphere of the music business. The song spent five weeks atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart at the end of 2009 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2010. It helped make the album of the same name the second-best-selling set of 2010 and made Lady Antebellum one of the brightest acts in any genre of music. A mix of country tradition and pop accessibility, with a rare blend of male and female singers, Lady A’s music transcends geography and generation.

The tenuous nature of the music business helps drive Lady Antebellum’s work ethic and intensifies the trio’s appreciation of success. Scott’s mother, country singer Linda Davis (a soloist and one-half of Skip & Linda) won a Grammy Award for the 1993 duet with Reba McEntire “Does He Love You,” but has seen the highs and lows of the business. “I’ve watched my mom get signed and dropped by three or four different labels my whole life,” Scott says.

Lady Antebellum’s third album, “Own the Night,” out Sept. 13 on Capitol Nashville, has the difficult task of following up its predecessor. Released on Jan. 26, 2010, “Need You Now” shocked the industry with first-week sales of 481,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The title track pushed “Need You Now” to sales of 3.1 million units in 2010, second that year only to Eminem’s “Recovery,” and 3.6 million units through Aug. 14 (plus another 5.7 million digital tracks). More impressive than the sales numbers were the five Grammy Awards, including record and song of the year, the act took home in February.

Haywood leans forward in his chair, elbows on knees, and recalls the impact of those Grammys. “We definitely put a little pressure on ourselves to want to go back in and make sure we make this great,” he says.

But the awards and sales don’t drive this trio, says Gary Borman, the group’s manager and principal at Borman Entertainment. “They are hardworking people. But they’re driven not by an ethic to work. They’re driven by a passion to work.”

Five weeks before street date, Capitol Nashville chief Mike Dungan is delighted about the way that “Own the Night” is setting up. “The demand for this album is really strong,” he says with excitement.

He, of course, understands the expectations. “Are we going to hit that number again? I don’t know,” Dungan says. “But any fraction of that number would be a crime if that’s seen as a letdown, because that was an absolutely spectacular moment that comes around rarely.”

But there are indications that “Own the Night” will come out of the gate strong. The album’s first single, “Just a Kiss,” released May 2, rose to the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in mid-August. Pop radio is onboard, too. The song is No. 22 on the Hot 100 and No. 23 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. “You could tell it was a big song from the beginning,” Dungan says.

A second single, the album’s title track, was released Aug. 15 and debuted at No. 40 on Hot Country Songs. During the week of release, the group will do a flurry of TV appearances — both morning and late-night shows — and will appear on “Saturday Night Live” on Oct. 1.

And Lady Antebellum’s ace in the hole could be its digital marketing.

Behind the Beats: Ramon “REO” Owens
As an up-and-coming producer, having Kanye West, Nas and Drake pass up on your beats can be dejecting, but Ramon “REO” Owens proves that persistence pays. After crafting a beat nearly three years ago, the 30-year-old finally got his instrumental placed on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV as the deluxe bonus track “Mirror,” featuring Bruno Mars.

“Kanye heard it, Drake heard it, and it already had the Bruno [hook],” he said. “Basically, Nas had it for a while, and it just ended up in the hands of Wayne and he loved it.”

With the help of Atlantic Records A&R Mike Caren, REO, who producers in tandem with his group the Soundkillers, was able to get his beat in the hands of some heavy-hitters. Originally, his goal was to land placement on ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but had to settle for Tha Carter IV instead. REO said his placement boiled down to one thing: luck.

“It’s to the point that they record so many songs over the time period that they’re making the album, so you just hope to God that your song resonates with everybody that has to yes it,” he told Mixtape Daily.

While many online reports are crediting Bruno Mars’ production outfit the Smeezingtons with production on the track, REO insists that by the time Tha Carter IV is released at midnight after the VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — and the CD’s liner notes revealed he will be properly credited as the producer and the Smeezingtons as writers on the song.

Though REO was informed that his song had made the album, he didn’t believe it until C4 leaked Wednesday, and he still doesn’t quite believe it. “I’m still kinda paranoid until I pick up that damn CD myself,” he said.

On the aptly titled track, Wayne gets reflective. The sample-free instrumental features an eerie wail in the background and a smothered kick- and snare-drum pattern. Its appeal isn’t in its intricacy, but rather in its driving emotion. “I had to listen to it a few times because I’ve just been hearing my beat for so many years, and I was like, ‘Yo, this guy got off on that sh–,’ ” he said of Wayne’s performance.

Even at the tender age of 21, Taylor Swift is one of the most poised superstars on the planet. And she has quite the reputation for being incredibly professional to work with. But when her tour openers NeedToBreathe finally got the chance to meet her, they were actually surprised by how true that is.

“Well, she won’t let us look at her [for] long,” Bear Reinhart joked to MTV News. Brother Bo added, “She wears, like, a veil over her face the whole time, like, no eye contact.”

Of course, that is anything but true, and Bear later added, “Honestly, it’s been really not like that at all. She was totally cool the first day … very pro for somebody who’s 21.” Bo continued, “[She's] very down to earth and easy [to work with].”

As the story goes, Swift handpicked the South Carolina band to be the opening act on her Speak Now Tour, which is currently hitting up the country. And the band finds it hard to believe that they are playing to a sea of screaming teenage girls in arenas and stadiums night after night.

“We thought when people called us, we thought they were joking,” Bear said of learning they’d be opening for the comely singer. “I think partly because it’s Taylor Swift and partly because we’re not really a country band and her fans are obviously a little younger than ours sometimes. But it’s been cool because she genuinely likes music and she likes our band and she’s been really sweet about the whole thing.

“We met her and she was kind of nervous around us,” he continued. “I guess [because] we’re older than her, but she’s like a real fan. She’s like, ‘What songs are you gonna play?’ So that’s good, to be appreciated on a tour like that. Obviously, we could, like, never see her again, but she’s been great.”

During an appearance on Live With Regis and Kelly (watch below), superstar and best friend to fighting robots everywhere Shia LaBeouf admitted that he is directing a documentary about shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. LaBeouf told Kelly Ripa – apparently a Manson fan herself – that he got to spend some time in Manson’s West Hollywood “lair.” That’s when Manson agreed to let LaBeouf – who has directed music videos for Kid Cudi and Cage – film a documentary about the making of Manson’s upcoming eighth album. The details that LaBeouf could elaborate upon on a morning show were obviously brief, but he did describe Chez Manson in some pretty hilarious detail. “There are no lights in the room,” said LaBeouf. “And there are these big metal doors and he opens the door and he’s in a kimono, a big pink kimono. It’s sort of like a lair. No lights, so you have to use your cell phone to guide you around.”

Manson’s as-yet-untitled album is reportedly due later this year.

Ice-T: ‘They Begged’ Me and Coco to Do Reality Show

Hip-hop and screen star Ice-T has just published a memoir, ‘Ice: A Memoir of Gangster Life and Redemption – from South Central to Hollywood.’ In it he writes honestly about his time as a successful thief and hustler to controversial rapper to beloved actor as Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on ‘Law & Order: SVU.’ It’s a fascinating tale of redemption and quite unexpectedly romantic as the real-life Tracy Morrow waxes about his wife of ten years, Coco. The two will soon be starring in their own reality show, ‘Ice Loves Coco,’ that starts in July. Ice talked to PopEater about that and the book in a lighthearted interview that turns sugar-sweet when talking about why he’s got such a solid marriage.

“Oh no, she’s out of her mind. She looks like a superhero. She’s a doll,” he says, later adding, “I really admire my wife. I think she’s the best and I love everything she does and we admire each other.”

First of all tell me about the reality show.
Ha! That’s where you want to start? It’s a little show we’ve been working on. We kind of went against reality shows. They’ve been after us for a long time, they begged us, they pleaded with us. We said that we’d do something on our terms. It’s called ‘Ice Loves Coco.’ It’s a fun show. It’s a show about our life and how Coco runs my life. It’s done in good taste and nobody’s fighting. It comes out June 12 on E! after the Kardashians.

So there’s no deep dark secret that will be revealed on the show?
None of that. I’m kind of goofy and so is Coco. That’s the only secret.

How is Ice-T goofy?
People listen to my music and in my music I’m always serious. It’s kind of like if you met Clint Eastwood you wouldn’t think he jokes because all his movies are so hard and the guy I play on ‘Law & Order’ is pretty hard but I can have fun. My wife is crazy so you’re going to see how we get along.

Your wife does look like she could be a cartoon character.
Oh no, she’s out of her mind. She looks like a superhero. She’s a doll. We’ve been married ten great years. If you watch reality TV you’d believe there’s not a happy woman on earth. That’s a lie. You don’t necessarily have to show all that negativity to keep people watching. I believe there’s an audience out there that just wants to see people have fun.

So you’re here to tell me that Ice-T likes a good fart joke?
I love a good fart joke. If you go to Twitter, you’ll see I talk about farts and all kinds of good stuff.

What is the secret to a happy marriage?
First you’ve got to marry the right person. There’s a saying when a woman finds a man it’s the right time, when a man hits the right time he’ll find the right woman. I think with men it’s more about us sowing our wild oats, getting to that point, another thing they say is a woman marries a man hoping to change him and we marry you hoping you’ll stay the same. So you’ve got to get around those two things. Also admiration. I really admire my wife. I think she’s the best and I love everything she does and we admire each other. Admiration is way different than love. You can love somebody and still think they’re beneath you.

Your entire career was inspired by a sergeant in the army calling you a loser.
Absolutely. I had gotten my girlfriend pregnant and my daughter was a baby and I was trying to do the right thing and get off the streets and the sergeant said to me one day, ‘You’re here because you cannot make it in civilian life.’ Sometimes things like that cut so close and I was dead set on a mission to prove him wrong. I didn’t want to stay in there forever and when I would have bad moments I would hear him say that. Sometimes a little negative comment might trigger you so that’s what triggered me.

Does it bug you hearing nerdy white people use rap terms?
It doesn’t really bother me. It bothers me when people use it incorrectly. I think the one that bothers me the most is when people use the word wack but they spell it with an h.

You were part of a robbery crew but you hated stealing.
It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s that I hated the risk. So therefore during it I wanted to take it all. It was like, I don’t like doing this so if we gotta do this let’s just rob them blind. (Laughs). Every time I did something I was trying to retire, now some people like it, they’re there for the fun and excitement of it. I knew that when you did it your days were numbered in the low digits. At the end of this story all my friends went to prison, a lot of them are still in for life. I was very fortunate because I detoured off that road and went into rap. I think in the book I don’t make it seem like I was smarter, opportunities just happened and something in my mind said, ‘Go this way.’ My plan was never to go be on network television. I mean come on, how far fetched is that?

Don’t you think it’s ironic the guy who wrote ‘Cop Killer’ plays a cop on TV?
It bothers more people that it bothers me. (Laughs). The thing of it was, ‘Cop Killer’ was a character too. I was singing as somebody. That wasn’t me, that was a character I created. It is kind of ironic at the end of the day. I tell people I have no allegiance to crime. When I was breaking the law the cops were the opponent, they weren’t somebody I hated. I just thought I could outsmart them. If there’s anything I hate it’s racist people, that’s just a a piece of shit human being.

Britney Spears isn’t the only pop titan dancing until the world ends: Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha have joined forces to add a new spin on an all-female remix of Femme Fatale‘s second single, “Till the World Ends.” 

The reworked dance anthem, which leaked online Friday (April 22), appears to have surfaced earlier than expected as noted by a series of countdowns on all three of the stars’ websites. 

Mixing the dance tune’s original sonic swirls with heavier bass, Britney tourmate Minaj starts off the remix by throwing down an aggressive verse, in which she calls out a female hater: “A-A-A-A-A-AYE!/ Chimpanzees is hatin’, but I take it all in stride/ Put her in a jungle with bananas on the side/ Told you they’d revive your career, but somebody lied/ I ain’t talkin’ poultry when I say this chicken’s fried.” 

After Minaj spits a few introductory bars, Spears delivers the song’s first verse before an introduction for the all-star trio. “It’s Britney, bitch. I’m Nicki Minaj and that’s Ke$ha!” the Young Money MC proclaims. 

Ke$ha, who originally wrote the track for the pop princess, takes part in singing the club-ready track’s chorus. Spears soon takes back control of the song as Ke$ha shadows the singer’s lines toward the end of the second verse and bridge. Unlike the original version, the “Till the World Ends” remix also features a stuttering dubstep dance break. 

News of a star-studded collaboration was hinted earlier this week when producer Dr. Luke tweeted, “@NICKIMINAJ killed it tonight!!!! thanks!!!”
