A Goodbye to Joe Riley

I met Joe Riley at DNA Studios when I was writing interstitials for The Ant Bully. Joe was a huge (and hugely talented) guy with an easy laugh and an unbridled imagination. When I was looking for an artist to do a full rendering of the Podrunner logo I'd designed, my friend Ken Mitchroney suggested Joe. I sent Joe some ideas and he sent back some amazing sketches. The full illustration, which you see here every week, just blew me away.

Recently Joe achieved a lifelong dream when Ken helped him become an official "Roth-Approved" artist for the Ed "Big Daddy" Roth estate. If you want to see the workings of a talented mind without a brake pedal, check out Joe's blog.

Joe died of a heart attack on Thursday, Sept. 27. In a space this small all I can say is that my heart goes out to Joe's friends and family. I'm glad I got to work with him, and I like the thought that one of the products of that fevered imagination lives on in the Blue Robot logo on screens and T-shirts around the world. We miss you, Joe.

Clear-headed and refreshed after defeating IBM's latest chess-playing mega- computer in a series of lightning rounds in a hyperbaric chamber, Groovelectric is now locked in a basement in Magic Castle, Hollywood, where Lance Burton is repeatedly demonstrating how to produce a business card from thin air. Be Careful What You Wish For
You Might Just Get It

There's an old joke about the two ways to make a musician complain: (1) Don't give him work. (2) Give him work. Apparently it applies to DJs, too, because all I had to do to get more gigs than I could handle was to kvetch about it on my newsletter. I just had to turn down two gigs, one in conjunction with the San Francisco Burning Man decompression party, and another for the Los Angeles Burning Man decompression party. Those hurt.

But I'm still kvetching, of course, because the recent gigs and conventions have made me realize just how much Podrunner and Groovelectric have taken over my life — doing the podcasts and the cons & gigs has pretty much meant cutting out sleep for a while. And there's a lot going on with Podrunner (not to mention my life; you guys only hear about the DJ part) that I haven't even talked about. One hint, though: If there are any mixes you've been meaning to download, I'd get to it fairly soon.

Meanwhile I'm excited about appearing again at Wish in SF, and about the Hard Rock gig in November (probably the biggest venue I've played).

The parties at the New Media Expo were a raging success. The second one got shut down after only two hours; people were taking their clothes off in front of the booth and tying each other up. What more could a DJ ask for? (I'm just glad it wasn't a Shriner convention.) There may be a fine line between "catalyst" and "instigator," but I doubt it's invisible. Not that I'd pay much attention as I sped past it anyhow.

A very large percentage of electronic dance music is about sex, drugs, or saying bad words over and over. Often any combination of the three. None of this offends me (though sometimes, hearing it, I wince as if I've chewed tinfoil — not because I'm offended, but because it's so damn cheezy). My feeling about being offended is that it reveals as much about you as it does about the offender, because it illustrates a boundary you've set for yourself.

That said, I'm aware that Podrunner and Groovelectric have, to put it mildly, a broad demographic among their listenership. I don't go out of my way to offend; neither do I travel very far to avoid it. My duty as a DJ is strangely internal to the mix itself: Is the track I'm going to play next the track that ought to go next? Mostly this seems so self-evident to me that it should go without mentioning, but the occasional "I can't believe you played that" email does gnaw at what blistered shreds of cauterized conscience remain to me — enough to prompt me to write about it here, anyway. I'm also probably influenced by the powerful content of some of the spoken-word pieces in "Word Up," the latest Groovelectric mix.

It's not up to me to decide what an artist should or shouldn't say. It's up to me to decide whether to play it. As a listener, it's up to you to decide whether you want to hear it. To be able to make that decision you need some warning, and my solution has been to tag mixes that contain allegedly offensive language as "explicit" in iTunes. I've only recently realized that those tags are not adopted by all podcast downloaders and MP3 players, so I've started putting a small [explicit content] notice on such mixes. (I ain't doing this for drug references, though. For one thing, ya gotta draw the line somewhere, and people have to accept that other people do things they may not approve of. For another thing, I'd have about five minutes of music a week if I cut out the drug references.)

Considering what I could put on these mixes, for the most part I think I do a pretty decent job. "Decent" — get it? Yuck yuck. I kill me.

Yours, Mine, & Hours

The Flavasauce gig at Wish was great fun, and many thanks to D-Mak for asking me up again. I'm usually hard to classify, playing sorta housey retrofunk stuff with a progressive house influence — but the entire night at Wish was like that! Every DJ was laying down stuff I wanted to steal. It was one of the few times I wished I was out there in the crowd instead of spinning. If you're in the Bay Area, check out Flavasauce one Friday night (the second Friday of the month, 6-10pm). It's jammin.

After the gig my wife & I stayed at my friend Ken Mitchroney's house in Martinez for a few days, had a hilarious dinner in Point Richmond (where I had worked at Pixar some years before) with listeners Jonathan, Kim, & Rochelle, and then spent two days at a B&B in Santa Cruz doing as little as possible. It was the first vacation/road trip we'd had together in nearly two years, and certainly the first since I started Podrunner and Groovelectric. I'm not usually good at vacations. I keep thinking there's some project I need to be working on. This time I thoroughly enjoyed not working on a damned thing. I don't think it'll ever get to be a habit, but, man, it was nice while it lasted.

With mini-vacation over, I've jumped into the deep end and am busier than ever. Projects we've been working on for well over a year are finally about to bear fruit. You'll be seeing the effects soon, and I'm excited to be right at the cusp of it all. The coming year will see a lot of growth and evolution, especially for Podrunner. We will grow, and grow more sophisticated, acquire sponsors and develop websites, diversify and become more visible. But throughout all of this I hold on to the sanctity of the mix. That place the music helps you go to while you're working hard will not be invaded or diluted. That hour is sacrosanct. That hour is yours.

"Finish Big" (134 BPM) - New Mix Online
This mix marks the end of a chapter for Podrunner. It's the last mix that will be available before we acquire sponsorship November 1 and the Podrunner archive goes offline (see "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes" below for details).

Podrunner isn't going away by any means — in fact, we're going to become even more visible while staying true to what we do. But it's still the last mix I'll be doing under a very wide-open set of circumstances. I wanted to celebrate that with an emotional mix that felt as if it was saying goodbye at the same time it was celebrating the new journey Podrunner is setting out on. On listening, I was surprised at the degree to which I felt "Finish Big" accomplished that. It's only going to be available for a week, so I pulled out all the stops, including making it an hour and 16 minutes long and playing the entire "Song for Shelter" ending track (see "Gimme Shelter" below) for the first — and last — time.

Gimme Shelter

Fatboy Slim's "Song for Shelter" is what got me DJing. I had been going to hiphop clubs for about a year, but it seemed to me even then that hiphop had grown static. I wanted a new music. One night I was at my friend Adrian's apartment in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. (Y'all have met Adrian; he's DJ Beatsmith, who guest-hosted with the killer 153-BPM "Hotfoot" mix.) He put on this album by Fatboy Slim called Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. I thought it was great, but when it got to "Song for Shelter," I went mental. In 11 minutes it astonishingly captured the club experience, from arrival to peak to filing out into the gray dawn. "Is there more music like this?" I asked.

He grinned — and set me on a path I've been following ever since. When I began composing electronic dance music, Adrian helped me with technical issues and dealt with my frustration at the learning curve. I'm not the most patient guy. When I said I never wanted to DJ, he laughed out loud. When I started learning to DJ, he was there for me again. We swapped mixes and collaborated, talked for hours, went to clubs, and immersed ourselves in the scene. Through it all, "Song for Shelter" was a kind of anthem. Its "You guys just keep on rolling" refrain became Podrunner's unofficial motto.

Because of Podrunner's new music-licensing arrangements (see "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes" below), this marks the last time I'll be able to play "Song for Shelter" here, so I've dropped the whole ball of wax, cool-down and all. I hope it moves you even a tenth as much as it still does me.

And this mix is for Adrian, aka DJ Beatsmith, because none of this would have happened without him.

It's very moody and doesn't try to build to a furious peak; it feels more like driving in the rain, or sitting in the comfort of a beach house and watching an offshore storm roll in. In fact, it feels so much like that that I ran some storm effects throughout the mix. (Thank you, BBC Sound Effects Library.)

Ooh, Look Out, You Rock & Rollers

On Thursday night, November 1, all the Podrunner mixes currently available in the archive will go offline. Here's why, and here's how we'll be rebuilding a new foundation of mixes for you.

As Podrunner has grown, it has become more expensive to make available, but I could not legally or ethically earn revenue from the intellectual property of other artists and labels without their permission and participation. In fact I had to turn down several sponsorship deals because they would not have covered revenue for artists & labels. We worked very hard to come up with an unprecedented process for licensing independent dance music under conditions of sponsorship, until we achieved a situation where everyone who participates in the deceptively complicated process that is Podrunner can benefit. An unavoidable result of this new licensing is that, with the advent of our first sponsor on Nov. 1, Podrunner mixes containing tracks from labels that have not yet granted such licensing (and all of the mixes do) will have to come down, and only mixes containing content licensed under the new terms can go up from that point on.

Truthfully, other than the absence of the current archive, you won't notice any difference. Podrunner will still come out every week (after the 7 mixes during the 14 days of Speedweeks, that is). Tracks will still come from my budz at Beatport.com. New mixes will still remain available as archive mixes. A huge amount of labels are on board (many of them already appearing quite often in Podrunner), with an enormous pool of great tracks to draw from, and this will only grow.

I hope you will welcome our new and future sponsors. They're making it possible to bring Podrunner to you for free every week. Podrunner has become so big that we couldn't afford to continue without them. Not only that, their sponsorship allows us to turn our focus from mere maintenance (simply maintaining Podrunner is a full-time job, believe me) to growth, improvement, and diversity. In addition, we'll be working with some of our sponsors to help make even more people aware of Podrunner. There will be website improvements, freebies, prizes, appearances at sporting events, and other, extremely cool things I can't talk about yet.

Change involving growth is usually painful. Podrunner's growing pains have occurred mostly behind the scenes. Now that real change has finally arrived, I'm excited. My goal has never been to change Podrunner itself. It ain't broke, and I don't wanna fix it. But I have always wanted to make more people aware of it, make it available in the easiest and most appealing way, make sure that the artists & labels whose work I love being able to present will benefit from Podrunner's growth, and make sure that I can do all this and keep bringing it to you for free every week without messing with your experience of it. All of that is happening, and I'm delighted you're along for the ride.

The response to the news of our new sponsorship has been 100% positive, and I want to thank everybody for their support. As you'll see when you listen to "Square One," despite a lot of behind-the-scenes shuffling, things aren't really all that different. Which is kinda how we all want it. New theme music, a new sponsor that doesn't step on your zone, and a solid hour of new music that's exactly like what we've been serving up for about 20 months now.

Sponsorship is extremely wecome, and helps us keep the mixes coming at you and work on growth down the line, but at present it doesn't even meet our music-licensing overhead. I strongly believe in being as open as possible about how I run this little ship of mine (okay, these two little ships), so I want to explain that I haven't removed the "Donation" page from the website or the links from this newsletter for one simple reason: Until sponsorship does cover our expenses — and we're confident it will — we still need your help bringing out Podrunner every week and Groovelectric every other week. I've detailed the very involved process of creating these podcasts in a previous newletter. What's changed now is the music licensing (it's a lot) and the fact the Podrunner and Groovelectric are now pretty much a full-time job for me.

So we still sorta resemble NPR in that, to keep doing what we do, we need help from companies and from listeners. Believe me, when sponsorship covers all of it and that "Donate" link can come down, you'll be the first to know!

Aaron was unfamiliar with my camera and can be forgiven for the videos. Especially since the alternative would have been ... more videos.

One note: Though I digitally removed Clown Boy in the final pic, I decided I'd rather leave him in the others and point a finger at him, since nothing could better illustrate that He Doesn't Belong Up There. There's a Clown Boy at every gig (if you're lucky — often there are more). I dunno why I should be surprised there was one at this one, too.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Most DJs have favorite tracks, and even favorite sequences of tracks. See a DJ twice a year and you probably won't hear those tracks again. See him once a month and you probably will.

We all have artillery we like to bring out for certain crowds. That's terrific when the crowd is mostly people who haven't heard you frequently, but your arsenal gets exposed when you record live sets not very far apart in time. When you drop a track in a room because you're big on it right now and it's a good moment to play it, you don't even think about it.

For the podcasts, I have an informal rule not to repeat a track I've played in a mix (the exceptions being different mixes of a track and acapellas). Considering how many mixes I've put out (the picture shows all the Podrunner mixes I put out before Speedweeks), I've done a pretty good job avoiding repeats. But looking over the playlists of the live Groovelectric mixes I've put up, I can see that it's time to retire some tracks. When the same track shows up in three different live mixes across three months, ya kinda wince. It won't stop me from playing any track live — "right track at the right moment" is the cardinal rule — but it will definitely make me think about when a live mix should go up as a Groovelectric!

These new serotonin regulators supposedly work wonders, so we're pretty confident Groovelectric will be back next week, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, chemically stable, and ready to work.

It's easy to be cynical about the Holiday season here in the States when the grocery stores put out the eggnog out before Hallowe'en, ferchrissake. When a trip to the coffee shop between Thanksgiving and New Year's looks more like some kind of vehicular dodgeball game directed by Michael Bay.

Still, I find it hard not to take stock around this time of year and realize how fortunate I am, and how far my two little podcasts have come.

Not so long ago I swore I'd never even DJ a party. A few weeks ago I spun at a major Las Vegas venue. The podcasts I started as digital business cards because I didn't want to keep sending out demos now chock up well over a million new downloads every other month. Groovelectric has steadily climbed in popularity, Podrunner has stayed on top even as podcasting has gotten bigger, and December 28 will see Podrunner's 100th mix. Major corporations have begun approaching us, rather than the other way around. We finally have sponsorship, and early next year we'll have a dedicated website, sponsorship I'm hugely excited about, and some great surprises. I'm now a full-time, professional podcaster, and there can't be all that many of those.

Not for a moment would I think that Podrunner and Groovelectric's success are a testament to my ill madd sickass DJ skillz. I think I'm a good DJ, but you could throw a rock in this town and hit five good DJs. (And you probably should.) Everything follows from your downloads and support, from you telling friends, coworkers, forum members, and blog readers about Podrunner and Groovelectric. Sure, I've put in a lot of work, and I'll put in plenty more. But without you, all of this is just me in a room with some DJ gear and a good idea. If I ever take that for granted, it'll be time to take down the whole circus and pursue that career as a Zen Needlepointer I've always wondered about.

So as simply and fully as I can express my gratitude: Thank you.

Every Silver Lining...
...Is Obscured by Clouds

Some people say the glass is half full, some say it's half empty. I say, Hey, who the hell's been drinking my water? Despite this tendency, I'm finding that the change in music licensing that required taking down the massive Podrunner archive has also opened up a wealth of tracks that are well-known in the club scene (along with a lot of tracks considered to be classics in Electronic Dance Music), but that have never been played on Podrunner. This week's mix, "Machine Says Go," definitely reflects that new availability.

One of the things I love about doing Podrunner is that it's exposed a kind of music I love to a great many people who might never have heard it otherwise. (I suppose that's true with Groovelectric, too, but generally GE's listeners tend to be more familiar with EDM). It's amazing how many emails to me open with, "I thought I didn't like this kind of music, but...."

The truth is, ten years ago I would never have listened to this stuff, either. That boom-chik disco techno drug rave stuff? No way! But I can't get enough of it. I keep waiting to get sick of it. It hasn't happened yet. (If it does, you'll be the first to know.)

In fact, the more I listen to EDM, the more I learn, and the more variety and subtlety I become aware of. People unfamiliar with this music tend to dismiss it: "All that techno sounds alike." (Which I always find funny if only because I play very little techno.) It's because they're hearing it with ears trained to listen to popular music: they're looking for melody and lyrics in a self-contained song with a verse-chorus-bridge-verse construction. While EDM certainly has its own formulas, a track is composed with an understanding that it's going to be a piece in a much larger puzzle constructed by a DJ over the course of a night, or at least of a mix. Each of those puzzles is unique, and the pieces themselves are subject to a surprising amount of customization. And it ain't about melody, it's about groove.

When you take a long view of putting together music this way, there's something nearly symphonic about it. Individual tracks become part of greater movements of tone, emotion, and pace. It's an oddly patient music. At the same time you're affected by what's playing right now (trust me, half a million watts of amplification pushing masses of air across a large room at 130 BPM most definitley affects you right now), there's a bigger picture that's taking into account the rise and fall and tension and release over the course of an evening (or a mix). Clubgoers know this. DJs know this. There's a transaction there

Anyway, this is all a very convoluted way of saying that I think the newfound opportunity to showcase some music that's been moving people in clubs for years is Rilly Kewl.

New Podcast Launches February 1, 2008

Podrunner: Intervals is a new podcast of varied-BPM music mixes for interval training. "First Day to 5K," the first 14 mixes, take you from absolute beginner to 5K runner in nine weeks! P:I will feature sets for beginning, intermediate, and experienced levels, as well as sets for 10K and half-marathon training

Podrunner: Intervals will be produced by me, and hosted and mixed by DJ Beatsmith, the only DJ to have guest-hosted Podrunner (he mixed the popular "153 BPM - Hotfoot").

O Brave New Year
That Has Such Podcasts In It!

2007 was momentous for Podrunner & Groovelectric. Podrunner stayed in iTunes' Top 4 music and Top 50 overall, was named one of iTunes' Year's Best Podcasts, debuted on top of the Zune Marketplace, saw the beginnings of media coverage, and acquired its first sponsor. Groovelectric rose to iTunes' Top 50 music podcasts, debuted #2 on the Zune Marketplace, and doubled its listenership. 2008 is looking even better. And talk about yer planets aligning! The last Podrunner of 2007 is also mix #100, in which we're announcing a new podcast, Podrunner: Intervals. There's a lot more in the works, too!

New Year's Eve has become a very big deal for me. My first date with my wife was to see John Digweed spin at Giant on NYE; our first kiss was at midnight. The next NYE Digweed spun again in the same place, and at midnight I asked Maureen to marry me. The NYE after that Digweed spun at Giant Village in downtown LA in front of about 12,000 people, and Mo and I got married in front of the stage at midnight. The next year Giant was rained out at the last minute, but the next NYE we won tickets and hotel nights to see Digweed spin at Giant Village for our anniversary. This NYE Digweed & Sasha are spinning at Together As One in Los Angeles. Guess where I'm gonna be?

I hope that this has been a good year for you. I hope that the next one is looking even better. Some of you have only recently found these podcasts, and some of you have hung in there from day one. Looking Forward, Thinking Back

I hope you all had a good New Year! Mine was fantastic. My wife and I met up with listeners Jeff and Bonnie, whom I met one amazing night at Burning Man last year, as well as podcaster KFC of SkydiverGirls & her crew, and had a terrific evening dancing nonstop to Digweed & Sasha at Together as One in Los Angeles. It took me about two days to recover.

Most people I know aren't too sad that 2007 is gone. And most people I know are also very optimistic about 2008. I feel lucky that my year was pretty good, and even more excited because 2008 has a lot in store. February 1 we'll be launching Podrunner: Intervals. Around that time, knock on wood, we'll also launch a dedicated Podrunner website. About the same time we'll also have new sponsorship that I'm very excited about. Podrunner entered 2008 at #2 on iTunes music and #40 overall -- not bad! Groovelectric, on the other hand, disappeared from the top 100 music charts for the first time in over a year. My bad for putting up a 110 megabyte, two-hour mix. :) We're not worried, though. Somehow Groovelectric chugs along. The groove abides.

Groovelectric
Welcome to the New Old Funk

Reports that Groovelectric hurled itself in front of an oncoming Red Line car to rescue a toddler in the tunnels beneath Hollywood Boulevard last Sunday are greatly exaggerated. It wasn't a Red Line car, it was a taxi cab, and it wasn't in Hollywood, it was outside The Pleasure Chest in West Hollywood, and it wasn't a toddler, it was a 5'11" redhead in heels, and Groovelectric didn't hurtle itself, it hailed the cab. Everything else happened exactly as reported.

Fixed-BPM Music Mixes for Any Fast-Paced Workout

"Upward Mobility" (135-175 BPM)
Before we start a new series on the "sixes," I thought it'd be fun to do a "ramp" mix, since there isn't one available in the current archive. If you're new to ramp mixes, these accelerate steadily over the course of the hour, reaching 25% of the target at 15 minutes, 50% at 30 minutes, 75% at 45 minutes, and 100% at 55 minutes, giving you a good run at the peak BPM.

The responses to the ramp mixes have been terrific. As training devices they cause your body to steadily increase its energy consumption, and many people tell me they increase both distance and time, often starting much slower than they usually go and ending up much faster than normal.

The Terrible Twos
Separated at Birth — But Not Enough

As they approach their second birthday, the twins have sure grown into very separate identities: Podrunner is one of the biggest podcasts in the world, and is about to get its own website, a spinoff podcast ("Podrunner: Intervals"), new sponsorship, and a buttboatload of other things. Groovelectric is one of the biggest music podcasts in the world, and it's gonna keep on keepin' on because it more represents me as a DJ than Podrunner can, if only by virtue of Groovelectric's freedom from Podrunner's format restrictions.

With such separate identities, events, news, and even listenership, there are now practical (not to mention legal) reasons to have one newsletter for all things Podrunner, and a separate, biweekly newsletter for Groovelectric and other earth-shatteringly important dj steve boyett news.

When that happens in a few weeks, this newsletter and my website will provide links so you can subscribe to the new Groovelectric/dj steve boyett newsletter. (I haven't thought of a Rilly Kewl name for it yet, but I'll try.)

I know it's hard to believe, but some people actually want to know about one podcast and not the other. One positive effect of the separate newsletters is that Groovelectric won't have to jump up and down and wave its arms for attention while Podrunner's in the same room taking up all that space, grinnin' a yard wide and cracking jokes and drinking a Jack & Coke with a babe on each metal elbow. Blue Robots — they think they own the world.

Three Men On
Two on Decks

What an amazing week for all three podcasts! Podrunner was featured on iTunes' main podcast page and rose to the #1 music spot and #16 overall. Groovelectric rose to #30 on iTunes music page. And Podrunner: Intervals debuted at #36 on iTunes music rankings, rose to #11, and was featured on iTunes "New & Notable" page — becoming one of the world's most popular music podcasts before there was even a mix available!

If that ain't cool, I dunno what is.

So this week we had three mixes in the Top 30 music podcasts, one of them in the top 20 overall — out of an estimated 175,000 podcasts. Hoo-wah!

iProng Interviews Steve Boyett
He Goes On and On and On....

Bill Palmer of iProng Magazine asked me a few questions for an article and ended up like that poor mosquito in the Far Side cartoon that hits an artery: He got a bit more than he bargained for. It's a chunky bit o' journalism, chock full of background info that everybody's grateful I don't talk about on Podrunner itself. Visit the interview link or download iProng (a PDF file).

Running Mates
That's the Ticket

This week saw the new Podrunner: Intervals rocket from #36 on iTunes music podcast chart to #4 as well as appearing on the overall top 100 at 86 and moving up to #50—before the first mix had been out a week! Podrunner moved to the #1 spot music spot before settling in at #3, and moved up to #16 overall before deciding it liked it better around #33. Underachiever. That makes Podrunner and P:I two of the most popular podcasts in the world.

Groovelectric moved up to #30 music and settled back to #50, largely because the poor thing only gets a mix out every two weeks.

Site email and newsletter subscription were unavailable for a few days this week as we made some upgrades. If you tried to send me an email or unsubscribe from Run Time, you can do either (or both, wahhh) now.

This week marks two years, about 170 mixes, and literally more downloads than we've been able to count since I launched these podcasts on my website because I didn't want to keep sending out demo CDs to get gigs. Be careful what you ask for!

As Podrunner & Groovelectric celebrate their shared second birthday with Birthday Beats and an upcoming Groovelectric exclusive, Podrunner is the #1 music podcast in the world, Podrunner: Intervals is #4, Groovelectric is #52, and we've launched a brand-new podcast that was a hit right out the gate — beating out Michael Jackson and Radiohead, fer cryin' out loud. Plus, we're right about to launch a dedicated Podrunner website and split this newsletter in two because there's so much happening. This is all in the last month, and there's a ton more on the way.

The emails and support I've received from my listeners have been amazing from Day One, and I guarantee you I wouldn't have had the resolve to keep at this without that.
