PIONEER IS IN THE MIX WITH LATEST DJM MIXER
Revolutionary DJM-2000 Features 5.8-inch Multi-Touch Screen, Advanced EFX and MIDI Control

LONG BEACH, CA (March 10, 2010) – Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. Professional Sound and Visual Division, is again front and center of the DJ scene as a technology leader with the introduction of the DJM-2000 professional mixer providing new generation digital DJs the ability to creatively produce outstanding performances at an entirely new level. A perfect companion to Pioneer’s CDJ-2000 digital media players and compatible with any player in the market, the DJM-2000 is marked to be the pinnacle of mixers with technological advances that include the industry’s first 5.8-inch multi-touch1 screen effects, Evolved Beat Effects, Pro DJ Link and MIDI controls.

“At the heart of DJing is the mixer and it’s absolutely essential to have the best product in your arsenal when you’re entertaining hundreds and even thousands of club goers. I’m confident that the DJM-2000 will be marked as the ‘go to’ audio mixer in the industry,” said Matt Dever, vice president of professional sound and visual division for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Performance Driven
For those DJs looking for a serious mixer that can greatly enhance their performance capabilities, Pioneer’s DJM-2000 will deliver incredible audio features and audio effects.

Mixer Layout
The DJM-2000 inherits a larger foot print than its predecessors to accommodate a sectioned layout of features as well as cosmetically match the latest Pioneer CDJ series of digital media players. On the top center section of the mixer resides its EFX capabilities to give DJs a bounty of digital effects. Located on each side of the middle section is its audio mixing controls for connection of up to four digital or USB sources. Across the middle section, Pioneer added new INST FX (Instant Instrument FX) functions which allow DJs to further alter and create more sound effects. And, at the bottom center of the mixer is a large LCD touch display that provides DJs a window for remixing beats and adding effects with the ease of a simple touch of the screen.
Industry First Multi-Touch Panel
A first in the industry for audio mixers(*1), the DJM-2000 incorporates a full-color 5.8-inch LCD multi-touch panel for adding audio effects. Users can simultaneously manipulate the displayed controls on the panel by touching different areas of the screen. Three different performance modes are available including;

Frequency mix – Enables more precise mixing within seven frequency ranges. For example, users can enhance the bass region within the music they’re mixing.

Sidechain remix – DJs can create seven different dynamic audio effects with touches and movements on the screen.

MIDI mode – Allows the user to assign various controls displayed on the LCD screen to control DJ software via MIDI. Four types of MIDI modes are available for more performance flexibility.

Evolved Beat Effects
A section of the mixer resides an Evolved Beat Effects adopted from earlier versions of the DJM series of mixers to generate a multitude of sound effects. Numerous buttons were added for selecting multiple effects and beat parameters for additional performance capabilities. Further manipulation of the sound effects can be made using the Effect Frequency knobs that changes the low, mid and high frequency bands of the music. Turns of the knobs enhances the effects to each frequency band, i.e., an echo added specifically to the vocals of the music or a doubling of the hi-hat rhythm, providing incredible performance options.

Instant Instrument FX
The INST FX (Instant Instrument FX) provides six additional audio effects that include Noise, HPF, LPF, Jet, Zip and Crush. Each of the effects can be induced into the channel with a turn of the Filter knob. Additionally, the Parameter knob allows the effects to be fine tuned.

Live Sampler
A cool feature of the mixer is its Live Sampler capability which allows the sound from a microphone or from the MASTER(*2) output to be recorded directly into the mixer. The “sampled” sound can instantly be transferred via LAN cable to a CDJ-2000/900 for scratching.

Pro DJ Link
When used specifically with Pioneer’s CDJ-2000 or CDJ-900 turntables via Pro DJ Link, the DJM-2000 becomes an even more powerful musical tool. The mixer incorporates four Ethernet ports in the back of the unit allowing up to four of the most recent CDJ turntables to be connected (via LAN cables) while sharing only one music-filled SD card(*3) or USB storage device. In addition, up to two laptop computers pre-installed with Pioneer’s music management software rekordbox™ can be interfaced with the DJM-2000 via LAN cables, in cases that two DJs are transitioning for their individual performances.

Link Monitor
When linked with the CDJ-2000 player, the mixer informs the DJ of its connected status. The JOG rings of the turntable changes in color based on the current on-air(*4) status or channel number connection, providing quick visual indications to the DJ

USB interface
The DJM-2000 features a USB audio interface(*5) that allows direct computer connection without the need for an external sound card. Up to four audio sources can be assigned to each channel providing even more flexibility. For additional convenience, the MASTER output can be connected directly to a computer for recording(*6) of performances.

Sound Quality
Continuing the prestigious reputation of Pioneer mixers, the DJM-2000 provides excellent sound quality. By utilizing balanced hybrid op-amp and a perfectly balanced output circuit in the analog processing stage, Pioneer managed to significantly decrease induced noise resulting in a dynamic range of 107dB with 0.004% THD for an extremely clean and powerful sound.

Additional features of the DJM-2000 includes:
• Switching 3-Band EQ/Isolator – Equipped with a switching 3-band EQ (+6dB to -26dB) and 3-band Isolator (+6dB to -∞dB) on each channel
• Digital In – Permits audio signal of each channel with no deterioration in sound quality
• Fader Start Play – Connection with CDJ player(s) with PRO DJ LINK or control cable allows the mixer to start the turntable by switching faders
• Talk Over – Lowers the volume of the music when a connected microphone is used
• Peak Level Meter – Displays input levels at a glance
• Cross fader Assign function – Allows the flexible assignment of the input on each channel to the cross fader
• Fader Curve Adjust function – Allows changes to cross fader and channel fader curves

We’ve had the Spin in for a few days now so I have taken the opportunity to have a play with the unit and report my thoughts. The first thing to take into account before you even take the Spin out of the box is it’s a £229 product pitching itself against the likes of the RMX and the Omni. £229 isn’t cheap but the Spin doesn’t compare to the Vestax VCI300 or TR1.

With expectations set at the correct level, I unboxed the unit for the first time and set it on the desk. What we have is a a good-sized, solid feeling chassis with a good weight to it. It doesn’t feel at all flimsy. Sure, it is a plastic chassis but it still feels like it will stand up to the rigours of a gigging DJ if looked after properly. The knobs and faders all feel nice and tight which I prefer – they will slacken off a little over time through use so better start tight in the first place. The jog wheels are large and solid and really look the part, very similar in design to the wheels on a VCI100.

Like most controllers these days, the Spin sends and receives all data via USB and is also powered by the same cable – no need for another power supply. It comes packaged with Algoriddim Djay software and installation of this was a piece of cake. When you install for the first time, the software asks you what you plan to use in terms of soundcards for the main output, the headphone cue and the mic. Selecting ‘Spin’ for all and clicking next meant that the installation and setup of the Spin and Djay software took less than five minutes. I have never seen a piece of equipment and software so easy to setup before.

The software itself is basic but functional and intuitive. Anyone used to the likes of Traktor or Serato will be taking a big step backwards but if you are new to DJing the layout is perfect. Unfortuately, unlike most other software the ability to customise is limited to say the least. You can bring up a bar at the bottom of your window which allows visibility of functions such as effects and loops – the kind of stuff I would have liked to have seen intrisnically part of the main layout.

There is also no waveform at all so as someone who has spent a lot of time with both Traktor and Serato, to the point where mixing blurs both visual and audio inputs, it does feel a bit awkward. Djay uses your iTunes library as your music source, something else to be aware of.

It should be noted that the Spin is a MIDI controller so if you want to map it for use with other software, feel free but be aware that this isn’t officially supported.

There are some niggles with the unit. The headphone volume is tucked away on the front panel of the unit making it a bit fiddly to get to. Also, I don’t like the lack of any sort of cue mix. There is no way to set the balance of deck A and B on your headphones while trying to mix. Not only are both these problems not unreasonable given the price of the unit, they are also issues I expect won’t be a problem for people new to DJing.

Some things I do like on the unit itself – the EQ faders are responsive and clean as well as having middle click positions. I much prefer these to knobs and would like to see them implemented more often on expensive controllers. The jog wheel sensitivity is completely adjustable, something to be aware of if you plan to use the unit for scratching and juggling. There is also a Record button on the unit itself making it incredibly simple to keep your mix for posterity.

Overall, at £229, the Spin is a fantastic buy for a whole range of people – those of you looking for a first step into DJing, established DJs looking to make the move to a digital setup and even those of you out there already gigging with more expensive controllers looking for a backup. The software isn’t the best but does the job so as soon as you are ready to move on to something more substantial, you can map the Spin to that instead. If you are a current DJ or want to start and you own a Mac, for the money the Vestax Spin is a no-brainer.

Today Pioneer have announced that the legendary CDJ1000 has come to an end. This remarkable CD player has spanned almost a decade as the market leader, evolved through 3 models and is the best selling unit of all time at DJ Store.

Pioneer’s Martin Dockree said:

“It is with mixed feelings that today we announce to the channel the discontinuation of the CDJ 1000MK3…….thanks to the hard work of our then newly appointed direct retailers, installers and established distribution, aswell as the DJ’s who instantly recognised it as the first real practical DJ CD player, it very quickly became an industry standard fixture in the DJ booth.”

The CDJ1000mk3 has now been superseded by Pioneer CDJ900. It has extra features over the CDJ1000mk3 such as auto beat loop and slip mode. DJs can play music files back from USB keys and portable hardrives and use it as a MIDI controller that will plug and play with Serato and Traktor without the need for time encoded discs. It’s equipped with a far superior sound card than any other controller on the market save the CDJ2000. The CDJ900 also ships with Pioneer’s music management software for DJs, rekordbox, which makes navigation of music on mass storage devices quick and easy.

We’ve got a handful left in stock, so now is your last chance to get your hands on a CDJ1000mk3, whilst stocks last.

Now that you have everything setup and ready to go, it is all too easy to crank the volume all the way up. This has the potential to damage your mixer, amplifier, speakers and even your hearing! To avoid damaging your equipment while getting the best possible volume, you need to set your gains properly.

The best way to do this when you are using your equipment for the first time, is to set your gains and the volume controls to 12 o’ clock and play some music. Turn your volume briefly all the way up. If your gains are set correctly, the music should be nice and loud and the LED meters for your gain should remain in the green – it is important that they never touch the red.

This is a fluid process which can change from track to track so you will find yourself tweaking your gains now and again but generally, when they are set properly, you should have a full range of control just using your volume fader or knob. As well as the red LEDs, listen out for any unusual distortion in your music, even when it doesn’t sound all that loud. That’s normally an indicator that you need to turn your gains down and volume up to compensate. It’s important to remember that the gains aren’t used to turn the volume up and down – they are there to smooth out track volume from different sources.

As NAMM rolls around once more, information starts cascading to us here at DJ Store on the new products we can expect to see in 2010. The first manufacturer out of the blocks is Numark (including Akai and Ion). We don’t have pricing for any of the following products and only have dates for some of them (which could change) but all the details we have are included below.

Numark V7 Motorized Turntable Software Controller

Borrowing some of the technology that has made the NS7 such a huge success, the Numark V7 is a direct drive, motorised turntable software controller with adjustable torque. Numark worked with Serato to design the included Serato Itch software which works seamlessly with the V7. Designed to work with any DJ mixer, the V7 features 24-bit audio, mouse free library navigation and complete, onboard FX controls.

Numark V7 Motorized Turntable Software Controller

The V7 is the first Numark unit to feature a dual deck USB function for seamless handoffs between two DJs. Using this feature, you can link V7s for up to four virtual decks between two DJs with laptops. The V7 is the future of software turntablism and should be in stock from March.

Numark X7 Four Channel Premium Club Mixer

Showing that they aren’t willing to rest on their laurels, the Numark X7 is a highly advanced, four channel mixer with every feature a modern digital DJ could expect and more. Fully MIDI compatible, the X7 features USB to MIDI and standard MIDI interfaces as well as advanced filters and effects.

Numark X7 Four Channel Premium Club Mixer

The build quality is second to none with rugged, heavy duty steel construction and solid premium buttons, knobs and faders. The X7 includes the same dual USB interface as on the V7 controller as well as V7 system link for seamless intergration with the unit. The included colour screen allows for parameter adjustments, function assigns and visual effect control. Numark have crammed technology into every corner of the X7 to ensure that it is going to be one of the best mixers available for years to come.

Numark Mixdeck DJ System

The Numark Mixdeck DJ System is an all-in-one unit allowing you to DJ with your computer, CDs, MP3s, USB drives and iPods. Featuring dual CD players and a mixer with a dock for iPods/iPhones, the Mixdeck also comes with USB-MIDI connectivity allowing you to control the included Native Instruments Traktor Edition. The iPod/iPhone dock can also be used for recording your set as you mix.

Numark Mixdeck DJ System

Featuring external inputs for other CD players or turntables as well as a mic input, the Mixdeck is built to take any punishment you can throw at it. Touch sensitive platters as well as beat-synced DSP effects round off an amazing package. We cannot wait to get this here to test.

Numark NDX800 Professional MP3/CD/USB Player and Controller

The NDX800 is the latest in the new NDX series of Numark players. Capable of playing CDs, MP3 CDs, music from USB storage devices and controlling DJ software, the NDX800 does everything the professional digital DJ requires. The USB-MIDI interface ensures no timecode vinyl is required while the unit contains a full suite of beat-synced DSP effects.

Numark NDX800 Professional MP3/CD/USB Player and Controller

The seven inch, touch-sensitive platter rests above a smooth and quick slot drive to keep your music safe and secure. +/-100% pitch control with key lock and automatic BPM counter gives you full mastery of your music to leave you to perform. The NDX800 will change the face of DJing when it comes into stock in March.

Numark iBattlepack Vinyl and iPod/iPhone DJ Package

For those of you who want to integrate digital DJ technology with the familiar feel of vinyl, the iBattlepack is going to be perfect. The iBattlepack features two of the classic TT1625 direct drive turntables along with the new iM1 two channel mixer. The iM1 features an iPod dock which allows the ability to play and record music from an iPod.

Numark iBattlepack Vinyl and iPod/iPhone DJ Package

The folding design and carry bag ensure they are safe, secure and compact from gig to gig. The PHX USBs come with two sets of earpads, USB and analog cables and 6.3mm adapters.

Akai APC20 Compact Ableton Performance Controller

Akai have added to the range with the smaller, more compact APC20.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1294 aligncenter" title="kontrol-x1" src="http://www.djstore.com/connected/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/kontrol-x1.jpg" alt="kontrol-x1" width="169" height="381"

Rumours of a new Traktor controller made by Native Instruments themselves have been circulating for some time. Yesterday Native Instruments confirmed those rumours with the announcement of the Traktor Kontrol X1.

The Kontrol X1 has been designed from the ground up to work with Traktor Pro. With the ability to control two decks at once, the interface fully mirrors what you see on your screen, completely removing the need to use a mouse or keyboard. All the functions are right there at your fingertips including loops, hotcues and sync.

Utilising a new high resolution protocol Native Instruments have created, the Kontrol X1 feels incredibly accurate and precise. It will also integrate perfectly with a Traktor Scratch setup as well as any other DJ software. The unit is built with quality in mind with robust knobs and firm buttons which are backlit to provide visual and tactile feedback.

Everything is laid out in an intuitive way so that any DJ familiar with Traktor should feel at home straight away. On top of this, the Kontrol X1 ships with Traktor LE, Kore Player and Kore Instrument software so everything is in the box to get you started. We are expecting the Kontrol X1 to be a massive hit when it arrives on the 1st February.

As a new DJ, one of the least obvious things you are just expected to know and understand is the difference between Line and Phono connections.

If you look on the back of most modern mixers, each channel input will have two sets of RCA connections; one for Line and one for Phono. Turntables are the only equipment which connect to the Phono input. Virtually all other equipment such as CD players, soundcards, iPods and the like, connect to the Line input. You can have turntables and a line signal input connected at the same time to one channel. You can then switch between them using the Line/Phono switch normally found either by the RCA connections or near the top of the mixer as you use it.

The reasons for this are straightforward. Turntables output a very low signal that needs to amplified with a Phono pre-amp. This pre-amp is built into the mixer and boosts the signal to Line level strength. It is very important that you always ensure to connect Line level equipment to the Line connection of a mixer and turntables to the Phono input. If you are ever in doubt, we are always here to help.

The third BPM promised to be bigger and better this year with a move from Donnigton Park to the NEC in Birmingham, and they certainly delivered an impressive event. Sound and light shows tend to have a real atmosphere created by the noise, lights and smoke, add to it several thousand DJ’s having their chance to get their hands on the latest equipment makes for a great day; here are some of the highlights.

Numark NSFX

The NSFX effects unit for NS7 is a compact little effects controller that bolts to the laptop stand at the rear of the NS7 giving you seamless integration into Serato ITCH. No news yet on availability but were hoping it’ll be some time before Christmas.

Allen & Heath Xone:DX

Our first glimpse of the new mixer/controller since news broke about it on Thursday. Very similar in style to the 4D, the XD is a mixer/soundcard/controller that comes bundled with Serato ITCH.

Pioneer CDJ2000 & Pioneer CDJ900

There was a buzz around the Pioneer stall this year – everyone wanted some of the new CDJ action. This was the first public showing. After fighting our way through the crowds we had a quick play with both players, and we have to admit, they are both very, very impressive. More details here.

American DJ Radius 3000

Following on from the Radius 1000, this MP3 CD Player features an SD card slot (SD, SDHC), USB for external sources and MIDI control (up to 8 channels at once), 9 on-board effects plus many more.

Denon DNS700

A simple, effective entry level CD/MP3 player with good design. We’re impressed with the quality and feel of the controls. More details here.

Denon DNHC100S

A dedicated Serato Scratch Live controller giving you more immediate control over your Serato effects, when the touchpad and keyboard simply isn’t enough.

Vestax VFX1

We’ve already blogged about the VFX1 already earlier this year, but it was nice to see it in the flesh.

Lighting

We saw quite a few impressive new lighting effects from American DJ, Prolight and Kam. Amongst others;

ADJ Dual Gem Pulse: A dual lens LED RGB moonflower effect with LED panel set in the centre.
ADJ Magestic: A four lens LED moonflower effect with angled projection points
ADJ Revo 4: A Moonflower effect with striking patterns.
ADJ X-Scan LED plus & X-Move plus: 30% brighter than previous models.
ADJ Nucleus LED: A Tricolour LED centrepiece with 6 scanning heads.

Amplifiers

Prolight showed off their new range of super-lightweight Warrior amplifiers range. These models will be around half the weight of current amplifiers with a switch in power supply technology. This also means each amp will only be 1U in height. We hope these will be available mid-November.

DJ Store will be stocking all the items mentioned as soon as they’re available. Check back later for full product specifications, images and video where not already available.
