Bejeweled Marriage Proposal

Here's a pleasant human interest story on a rainy (at least in Seattle) tax day:

Last December, Bernie Peng, a financial software programmer from New Jersey, reprogrammed his girlfriend Tammy Li's favorite video game, "Bejeweled," so a ring and a marriage proposal would show up on the screen when she reached a certain score.

Li reached the needed score -- and said yes.

The reprogramming was a tricky task and took him a month.

"I thought it was pretty cool, in a nerdy way," Peng told The Star-Ledger of Newark.

The couple plan to marry over Labor Day weekend, and PopCap, the Seattle company that makes "Bejeweled," will fly the couple to Seattle as part of their honeymoon.

"Most video game companies would frown on people manipulating their games," said Garth Chouteau, a spokesman for PopCap. "But it won him a woman. As a bunch of geeks, we have to say, 'Bernie, hats off to you.' "

The company is also supplying copies of "Bejeweled" to hand out as favors to the wedding guests. In the hugely popular PC and mobile game, players score points by swapping gems to form vertical and horizontal chains.

PollDaddy Makes It Easy to Create Twitter Polls

PollDaddy has launched a clever new service called PollDaddy Twitter Polls (via Webare) that lets you set-up an online poll and send out a tweet that informs your followers about the new poll. Here is an example of a poll we made about what Andrew Baron should do with the money he makes from auctioning off his Twitter on eBay. You can see the poll and participate in it here.

So far it looks like most people think Andrew Baron should donate the money to charity like Karoli at Odd Time Signatures suggested. Giving the money to his followers is in second and keeping it all for himself is third.

The polls are easy to use. The poll includes a descripton of the Twitterer who posted the poll. There is also a comment form where people can comment or maybe add a write-in suggestion. There are quite a few people testing PollDaddy's new Twitter tool out on Twitter today. As with any service if it is overused it could become annoying.

O2 knocks £100 off the iPhone

Rumours have been around today suggesting that O2 was about to cut the price of the 8GB iPhone. I've just received an email from O2 confirming it. Until June 1, the 8GB iPhone will cost £169.

It isn't clear why O2 are making the move. Are they trying to clear stock ready for a new version of the phone? Or are sales so sluggish that desperate measures are needed? Perhaps everyone's buying the 16GB model instead?
