Massacre's 1986 album From the Womb to the Grave may be a bit late to the punk party but it remains hands down one of my favorite bits of Finnish teen angst. If you don't like this album, you don't really like Finnish Hardcore and you can take off that stupid shoe string headband thing that you wear to all the shows.

Elvis Presley - 1971-02-23 - Las Vegas (SBD)

In 1971, as part of the 5 year deal his manager Tom Parker signed 2 years earlier, Elvis began his winter series of shows in Las Vegas at the International Hotel on January 26. He’d play 57 shows in the next 29 days, normally doing 2 performances a night, one at 8:15 pm, and one at 12 midnight. Often, after the 2nd show, he and his entourage would stay up all night partying. He had both a female and a male backing vocal group for these shows, the Sweet Inspirations and The Imperials, respectively. The shows also featured a 6 piece band and a symphony orchestra. His jumpsuits – 18 different ones were used in 1971 – and belts became more elaborate, setting the stage for adding capes to his ensemble later in the year. While he was sill in fine voice and could turn in performances as powerful as any in his career, the pomp and circumstance surrounding these shows made it clear that Elvis was beginning down the road that would lead to the end of his marriage a year later, and eventually his tragic death in 1977. This soundboard recording captures Elvis at the last show of the Vegas run, on February 23, 1971, 41 years ago today. Taj Mahal has been doin' his thang for many a year. His early recordings, back in the 60s, focused on the blues, when he turned out his formative albums like the Natch'l Blues and Recycling the Blues. Over the years, in addition to the blues, he's covered jazz and folk, reggae and African.

Like my main man Ry Cooder, he has researched and aimed to keep alive music of various traditions. He's a veritable scholar and ethnographer of music. In fact, musically, he's all over the place. The man has worked with the Rolling Stones, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder, Eric Clapton, Doc Watson and Toumani Diabate (and if you haven't heard this Malian musician, you are missing some great sounds. Not posessing the most musically "soaring" voice, Taj still packs a great deal of emotion into what he's he's been gifted with. His is a rasping kind of voice, well suited to the blues, but it's also the kind of voice that works well for telling a story (a la Tom Waits), and that is what this week's focus is all about: telling or speaking a song.

There are many spots of Linin' Track where Taj's voice trends more to the musical than the spoken. However, in other places, his vocals are very much spoken - or certainly not musically tonal. This is a song credited to Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly.

Speaking of the blues and apropros of the economic woes many of us are living through, the lyrics of Linin' Track include the words: "talkin' 'bout the money I aint made" may ring true for a number of us. Or maybe, considering the Arab Spring (Israel, Egypt and environs), maybe you can relate to the lyrics: "Moses stood on the Red Sea shore, smotin' that water with a 2 by 4" ... are more to the point. The line continues, "if I could I surely would ...". A positive outlook for our times, me thinks.

K-tel - 25 Polka Greats Vol.1 (1971)

Remember those great K-tel commercials on TV? And how many of you bought K-tel records? I know I have several in my collection! I loved the K-tel records because they were mostly compilations of "20 great hits from 20 great original singers"! Many times, I just liked the hit song that played on the radio, and I didn't want to buy the whole album of a particular musician for that one song, so K-tel records were just perfect compilations for me! Well, this particular record is not one that I bought back in the day, but I couldn't resist it when I saw it at an estate sale. I do love a good polka! And how could I pass up a record with the polka king, Frankie Yankovic, AND Myron Floren from "The Lawrence Welk Show", AND the Six Fat Dutchmen?! Apparently though, there seem to have been several versions of this record - I found three different ones on the internet, all from K-tel with the same name and same number (NC 420). Side 1 seems to be the same on all three versions that I found, but side 2 varies. Maybe they released different versions in different countries or markets? Anyway, it's a fun album and sure to get you up on your feet and polka-ing around the house!

Since it seems like all links for the original Unreleased cassette are dead in the water or at a very low bit rate, here's a fresh 320 kbps, fresh from the cassette! This one is arguably the most orthodox of the series, featuring several "household names" from the French coldwave/touching pop scene, many making their first or second recorded appearance here. Every band here hails from France, with the exception of The Cultural Decay (Belgian), and a rare track from Factory darlings Section 25.

Interesting how each of these compilations appear on a different medium, huh? I wonder if a fourth compilation will ever surface on 8 track...

The Iodine Raincoats - I Wonder ep (1988)

The Iodine Raincoats? With a curious and imaginative moniker like that how could I possibly resist? I was expecting something akin to early Primal Scream or Close Lobsters, but this Detroit outfit where hardly the C86 castaways I was anticipating. I/R actually skewed firmly between the left and center of the dial, and would have slotted in well amidst the "edgier" contingent of the AOR neighborhood. I Wonder isn't far removed from the work of their hometown contemporaries The Rhythm Corps, and to a lesser degree The Alarm (sans the anthemic bravado thankfully).
