Dave Matthews Band 2012 studio album 'coming soon'

It's official: Dave Matthews Band is recording a new studio album with producer Steve Lillywhite.

We've known about the Dave Matthews Band 2012 studio album for months now, thanks to posts by Lillywhite and Stefan Lessard on their Twitter accounts, plus a recent Rashawn Ross interview.

DMB just announced the news this morning, however, in a brief statement on its website:

New Studio Album Coming Soon
Dave Matthews Band is currently in the studio recording a new album with Steve Lillywhite, producer of the band's first three studio albums, Under The Table And Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets.

Additionally, Billboard reported today that "details on how to order the album will be announced soon."

Details about the Dave Matthews Band 2012 studio album are still sketchy; it sounds like the recording process is pretty far along (if not done), judging by what Rashawn and others have said. But there's been no indication about what songs will appear, the album's title, a release date, etc.

The band's website also announced the Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour dates this morning.

Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour dates are out.

The Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour begins May 18 in The Woodlands, Texas and ends Sept. 9 in Mountain View, California. It includes a stop at the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 20, as well as a three-night stand at The Gorge over Labor Day Weekend.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Avett Brothers, Fitz and the Tantrums and Brandi Carlile are some of the opening acts on the Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour, with more to be announced later.

Warehouse members may begin requesting tickets for the Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour tomorrow at 10 a.m. Eastern. Tickets go on sale to the general public March 9 (except for the Hangout Music Festival; those tickets are already on sale).

The Dave Matthews Band 2012 tour will be in support of the band's new album with producer Steve Lillywhite.

New Dave Matthews Band album update: 'It's gonna sound huge,' Rashawn says

Recording for the new Dave Matthews Band album with producer Steve Lillywhite is pretty far along, according to Rashawn Ross.

The band already played songs live in the studio, from which "the producer" culled drum tracks. (Rawshawn didn't refer to Lillywhite by name, probably because DMB hasn't officially announced him as producer.)

Band members are now recording their parts over those drum recordings, Rashawn said in a video interview on the David Monette Trumpets Facebook page.

"That's how we get the live spirit, the live vibe of the songs," he said.

All the horn parts for the new Dave Matthews Band album are already finished -- recorded in six hours -- and the band still has to record bass, guitar and percussion parts, as well as background vocals, Rashawn said. He added that this album will not utilize "horn stacking," a common technique where horns are recorded multiple times to give them a fuller sound.

"Even on the funky stuff, the really hard-hitting stuff, on the album, it's just gonna be myself and a saxophone, and it's gonna sound huge," he said.

The band entered a Seattle studio in early January, but there's still been no official announcement about the new Dave Matthews Band album. It's possible that fans might be able to hear new material at the Dave Matthews Everglades Foundation benefit concert Feb. 17 in Palm Beach, Florida, but Dave might also want to keep it a surprise.

Warehouse 8, Volume 8 and Warehouse 5, Volume 11 bust out the rarities

The new Dave Matthews Band Warehouse CDs -- Warehouse 8, Volume 8 and Warehouse 5, Volume 11 -- feature several rare jams and classic performances.

The new DMB Warehouse CDs kick off with the April 26, 2002 performance of "Gravedigger Intro," an early version of "Gravedigger" featuring different music but the same chorus lyrics.

The other highlight is "Gas Into Fire," a brief jam DMB played June 17, 2004. The discs also feature a couple of creative segues: a partial "Old Dirt Hill" into "Why I Am" and an "Everyday" tease into "Halloween" and then into "Water Into Wine."

Warehouse 8, Volume 8 includes three additional songs, including the Aug. 31, 1993 version of "Ants Marching" from the legendary Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville, Virginia. The unreleased jam "Doobie Thing" segued into "Ants Marching" that night, but it doesn't appear that it will be part of the Warehouse CD.

Warehouse members who have been in the club at least four years will receive Warehouse 8, Volume 8. The rest will receive Warehouse 5, Volume 11. Here are the full track listings for the new DMB Warehouse CDs:

Reddit is abuzz today thanks to the picture below, which purports to be Dave Matthews wearing a jean skirt and midriff-baring T-shirt in an airport.

There's a resemblance, but the photograph of the man's face isn't the clearest, and he appears to be skinnier than Dave. Plus, although Dave can be eccentric, this man's wardrobe is truly bizarre. What do you think?

Dave Matthews Band to play Hangout Music Fest

Dave Matthews Band will headline the Hangout Music Fest, a three-day festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The DMB Hangout Music Fest news had been rumored for weeks but became official this morning. Jack White will co-headline the festival, which features an eclectic lineup of more than 40 musical acts, from Skrillex and Paul Oakenfold to Randy Newman and Steve Winwood. The festival takes place May 18-20 and boasts a unique venue: right on the beach, with lodging at resorts and condos along the Gulf of Mexico.

For DMB, the Hangout Music Fest is the first official tour date of 2012. The band is expected to tour the United States in support of (or testing songs for) a new album with producer Steve Lillywhite.

Hangout Music Fest tickets go on sale Friday for $194. Various levels of VIP passes are also available, as are travel packages. There's no word yet if DMB will make Hangout tickets available through the Warehouse.

Dave Matthews Everglades Foundation benefit Feb. 17

Dave Matthews will perform at an Everglades Foundation event Feb. 17 in Palm Beach, Fla.

That's the word from Gossip Extra, a South Florida celebrity news site. The Dave Matthews Everglades Foundation benefit will take place at The Breakers, a waterfront resort, and tickets cost $1,000 each. Surfer Kelly Slater and the cast of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" will also appear at the Everglades Foundation benefit, according to Gossip Extra.

The Everglades Foundation is a charitable organization based in Palmetto Bay, Fla., whose mission is to restore the Everglades to their natural state.

Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante wears a Dave Matthews Band Caravan T-shirt in his band's new video.

Benante, who has talked about his admiration for Carter Beauford in the past, wears the DMB Caravan T-shirt in the studio portion of Anthrax's "The Devil You Know" video. The rest of the video features concert footage from The Big Four show at Yankee Stadium last September.

The newest Live Trax album captures a 1995 Dave Matthews Band club show.

Live Trax Vol. 21: SOMA, San Diego, CA is a two-disc set from DMB's Aug. 4, 1995 concert at SOMA, a popular Southern California music venue. The highlight of the setlist is "Don't Burn the Pig," a jam that evolved into the Before These Crowded Streets track "Pig." The album also features a "Seek Up" opener, a nearly nine-minute version of "Recently" and a duet between Dave Matthews and Stefan Lessard on "I'll Back You Up."

DMB will release Live Trax Vol. 21: SOMA, San Diego, CA on Feb. 28, and it's available for pre-order now, alone or with a commemorative T-shirt.

DMB concert bomb suspect to plead guilty

The man charged in last year's Dave Matthews Band concert bomb plot in Chicago will plead guilty, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The FBI and Chicago police arrested Sami Samir Hassoun after he planted what he thought was a bomb outside Wrigley Field after the Sept. 18, 2010 DMB concert there. Hassoun had unknowingly been working with undercover agents who provided him with the fake bomb.

Hassoun had pleaded not guilty to the DMB concert bomb plot in October 2010, but on Dec. 21, federal prosecutors told a judge they had been involved in plea talks with Hassoun's lawyer. The judge canceled Hassoun's trial, which was scheduled to begin in February.

DMB 2012 album sessions starting in January; Lillywhite producing?

Dave Matthews Band will start recording a new album in January in Seattle.

Stefan Lessard told KBCO-FM in Colorado that the DMB 2012 album sessions will start at the beginning of the year, likely followed by a tour. In addition, indications are that producer Steve Lillywhite will reunite with the band for this album.

"We are psyched to get back together and start working a little more next year," Stefan said during a Yukon Kornelius interview with KBCO.

Here's what we know about Lillywhite possibly producing the DMB 2012 album. On Dec. 23, in response to a fan's question about the band's plans for next year, Stefan wrote on Twitter: "I have no info Seattle Lillywhite all I know." And yesterday, Lillywhite tweeted: "back in NY for a week and then I travel west for a while..."

Lillywhite produced the first three DMB studio albums, Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets. He stopped working with DMB after the band abandoned its 2000 studio work with him and recorded Everyday with producer Glen Ballard. The Lillywhite Sessions leaked in 2001, and DMB re-recorded most of those songs for official release (without Lillywhite) on the 2002 album Busted Stuff.

In 2008, Lillywhite came out and said he was upset that DMB re-recorded songs from the Lillywhite Sessions without thanking him in the Busted Stuff liner notes. But two years later, he said he'd love to work with DMB again, and Dave Matthews said DMB and Lillywhite could do another album together in the future.

There is no timetable for the DMB 2012 album release or any indication of what songs it will include. DMB has a significant number of songs from the past several years that it has never recorded or released on an album, but the band has shown an inclination to record mostly new music for its past few albums.

Dave Matthews at Jane Goodall documentary event

Dave Matthews will appear at a live event showcasing a new Jane Goodall documentary.

The documentary, "Jane's Journey," will show in movie theaters across the country Sept. 27, along with a live question-and-answer telecast with Goodall, the famed chimpanzee expert. Dave will be part of the telecast, "to presumably perform and to discuss his time in the field with Goodall," according to the Mother Nature Network.

The Jane Goodall documentary event will not mark the first time she and Dave have worked together. Dave and Tim Reynolds performed a Jane Goodall benefit concert in 2010; as part of that event, Dave and Goodall also discussed politics and the environment with the media.

Randall's Island DMB Caravan lineup announced

The Randall's Island Dave Matthews Band Caravan this weekend has a much different artist lineup than the postponed Governors Island festival did.

DMB plays Don't Fear the Reaper at the Gorge

Dave Matthews Band covered "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult on Saturday night at the Gorge.

It was the first time DMB had played "Don't Fear the Reaper," although Stefan Lessard's side project Yukon Kornelius played the song a few times in 2008 and 2009.

Saturday night's concert also featured guest appearances by Warren Haynes on "Cortez the Killer," Warren Haynes' sax player Ron Holloway on "Jimi Thing" and singers Alecia Chakour and Nigel Hall on "Stay." Friday night's DMB Caravan performance at the Gorge saw the first "American Baby" since 2006, and Sunday's ended with fan favorites "Halloween" and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)."

New York DMB Caravan moved to Randall's Island

The New York Dave Matthews Band Caravan will now take place Sept. 16-18 on Randall's Island.

The New York DMB Caravan was originally scheduled for last weekend on Governors Island. Friday night's festival went off as scheduled, but Saturday and Sunday were postponed because of Hurricane Irene.

There will be a new lineup of artists for the New York DMB Caravan on Randall's Island, but the band has not announced those other acts yet (except for Dispatch, who will play Friday and Saturday).

If you held tickets to the Governor's Island festival, you may use them to attend the corresponding day(s) of the Randall's Island festival -- even if you went to the Friday concert on Governor's Island. Fans may also exchange their tickets for tickets on a different day, and they can request full refunds as well.

Governors Island DMB Caravan postponed Saturday and Sunday

The Governors Island Dave Matthews Band Caravan concerts Saturday and Sunday have been postponed because of Hurricane Irene.

Friday's Governors Island DMB Caravan concert will still take place, and fans with tickets to Saturday and Sunday's shows may attend. DMB just issued this statement on Facebook:

"The Governor of New York has issued a state emergency, therefore the DMB Caravan events on Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th have been postponed. We will announce the new Caravan Governors Island dates as soon as they have been confirmed. We will continue to post updates to the Caravan site and this Facebook page as they are confirmed. Ticket holders for Saturday and Sunday are invited to attend the Friday event tomorrow at Governors Island."

Information on refunds is not yet available. Hurricane Irene is expected to hit the New York area Sunday, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg put a stop to all outdoor activities in flood-prone areas after 2 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday Governors Island DMB Caravan also in doubt

All outdoor events in New York's most flood-prone areas must end by 2 p.m. Saturday -- a Hurricane Irene-related announcement that jeopardizes the Saturday Governors Island Dave Matthews Band Caravan.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg just cancelled all outdoor events in Zone A, the city's low-lying areas, on Sunday and ordered Saturday events in those sections to stop by 2 p.m. Governors Island, site of the DMB Caravan festival, is in Zone A.

Bloomberg's order means the Sunday Governors Island DMB Caravan, which was already in doubt, almost certainly won't take place as scheduled, and Saturday's likely won't as well. Hurricane Irene is expected to hit the New York area Sunday, but DMB has not officially announced any cancellations yet.

Tomorrow's DMB Caravan concert on Governors Island can apparently go on as scheduled.

Sunday's Governors Island Dave Matthews Band Caravan concert may not take place because of Hurricane Irene.

The show is still on as of now, but ticket holders for the Sunday Governors Island DMB Caravan may attend Friday or Saturday's concert instead, the band announced this afternoon. But the situation may change as Hurricane Irene's path becomes more certain.

Most computer models have Hurricane Irene making a direct or near-direct hit on New York sometime Sunday, and city officials are preparing for possible evacuations. There's been no word if any of the bands scheduled to play the Sunday Governors Island DMB Caravan will play on the other days instead.

Five Guys: The DMB of burgers?

Music industry blogger Bob Lefsetz mentioned Dave Matthews Band in a recent post about Five Guys Burgers, the popular chain that owes much of its success to its grassroots following. DMB manager Coran Capshaw also has a stake in Five Guys.

"It took twenty five years for the family to get it right and the chain is burgeoning, even Coran Capshaw is in on the deal, possessing franchising rights in many states, hell, even Irving Azoff owns one in the West Valley," Lefsetz wrote. "Not that most people know that. Not that that's relevant.

"Then again, hasn't Coran's empire been built on the most authentic act of its era, the Dave Matthews Band? Yes, the key to Five Guys Burgers' success is authenticity."

Dave and Tim Caravan sets added

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds will perform at the Dave Matthews Band Caravan festivals on Governor's Island and at the Gorge.

The Dave and Tim Caravan sets were widely expected, because the duo performed at the first two festivals in Atlantic City and Chicago. These last two Dave and Tim Caravan sets will both take place on Sundays (Aug. 28 on Governor's Island and Sept. 4 at the Gorge).

Dave Matthews plays Microsoft intern concert

Dave Matthews played a surprise concert for Microsoft's summer interns Thursday in Seattle.

The Dave Matthews Microsoft intern concert took place at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. Dave played an 11-song set that opened with "Grace is Gone" and closed with "All Along the Watchtower," and he played "Satellite" and "Don't Drink the Water" for an encore.

More than 1,000 Microsoft interns attended the concert, and they all received special-edition Dave Matthews Xbox 360 Kinects.

The Microsoft intern concert was not the first time Dave has performed for the software giant. He played at the opening of the Microsoft store in Bellevue, Washington in November, and he and Tim Reynolds performed at the Microsoft advance08 conference in Seattle in 2008.

The night after the Microsoft intern concert, Dave returned to Woodland Park Zoo to join Brandi Carlile on stage during her concert. The two sang John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery," which Dave Matthews Band used to cover fairly often. Here's video of that performance:

Dave and Tim Charlottesville charity concert Aug. 20

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds will perform a charity concert in Charlottesville, Virginia on Aug. 20.

Fans who purchase tickets to the Dave and Tim Charlottesville charity concert will be able to donate the full cost to a charity of their choice, using JustGive.org. (The website is connected to more than 1.8 million charities.) Dave and Tim put on two similar Seattle charity concerts in November.

Tickets to the Dave and Tim Charlottesville charity concert range from $50 to $135, and $300 VIP packages are also available. Those tickets include seats in the first 16 rows and access to a pre-show cocktail reception.

After the Dave and Tim Charlottesville charity concert, Warren Haynes Band will play its own charity show at the nearby Jefferson Theater.
