VIDEO - Carnage The Executioner "Hunger" [Honest Hip Hop]

Saw this video floating around on Twitter the other day. Carnage the Executioner was more like a fable character from the midwest I had heard snippets of until I saw dude destroy a small club in Portland with only his voice and a loop pedal. Mashing up classic beats and hooks via his exceptional beatbox technique, with rapid freestyles, he basically pushed everyone off the edge of creative hip hop into the abyss of an awesome dance party. No surprise to those who know, Carnage has been killing it out of Minneapolis since the nineties, thus the title of his llast album from Fill In The Breaks, "Worth The Wait".

Anyone staying up on this blog knows I am a big supporter of what the fine folks at World Around Records are doing. For the past few years they have consistently put out great work, following their commitment to music that is honest, creative and positive. If you are not familiar I highly recommend perusing their catalog of awesome albums and singles, many of which are available for free or a moderate fee. When they drop their annual sampler its well worth it to get a copy because it gives a glimpse of what's to come in the year ahead. This one is a heavyweight with new joints from some of my favorite artists on the label, Including Man Mantis, Hump Jones, the reclusive Adam Kadmon, and this dude Castle I've never heard before but am seriously enjoying lyrically.

DMLH on IMDb as Rapper #1

For reel, I found this buried on page 2 while, yes, googling my name. Its a credit for a film shot in Portland titled "Summer of 69". Directed, shot and edited by a team of locals known for keeping things rowdy at the historic Clinton St Theater, Seth Sonstein and Michael Atkins, the film is basically a vehicle for a few comic writers, and the star of the film, comedian Ian Karmel, who was recently featured on Portlandia.

I am credited as "Rapper #1" and my homie Shermstixx is Rapper #2. This is because our group Start Fires is featured in the party scene, performing our song "Party At My House". The scene features the interiors of 134, our SE Portland fortress of awesome. The film was finished and released in 2009, and has played at a number of festivals. I had forgotten all about it until this google result came to remind me.

I have been in one other piece of media as an actor, more like a model, for an anti-smoking PSA animated by ManBaby Studio. Its called "Smoke Buddies" and is pretty funny. CHECK IT OUT.

ALBUM - Owlright "Cool Shoos Dood" [Blipstep]

The homie Man Mantis tipped me off to this group from Boise, Idaho. Owlright is Richard Palisades and Benny Diskobal, and they have been collaborating on this project since 2008. According to their Bandcamp bio, "their production techniques include sound design, midi data dumping, and synthesizer programming of all kinds. They take great pride in providing their fans with rich, handcrafted sounds and catchy melodies." With the dance groove of house, the bass of heavy EDM and a playful chip-tune sensibility they are all over the place, but to sum it all up they call it "Blip-Step". Its fitting, whereas many new EDM artists are rocking the heavy grimyness these guys are bringing the fun back to the club. Also notable is their use of actual synthesizers and midi devices, which adds a live element and some classic tones to the overall sound. VIDEO - NSFW - Abadawn & DMLH (That's Right) [Honest Hip Hop]

We made this song one afternoon for Abadawn's 2011 release "Deadication". He had already recorded his verses but had left room on the track for another emcee. I was there and after hearing his jokes on pop culture I thought I could match wits with the kid. I mimicked his flow almost syllable for syllable and played off his chosen subjects with my own rhetoric on the degradation of consumer culture. It's quite a bit funnier than that sounds.

Aba threw this video together with still images from los internetz and we got a nice response from our networks on it. Yesterday It was uploaded by the TairyHesticles YouTube Channel and has amassed over a 1000 views in the last 24 hours. I know thats not oddfuture numbers but for us it feels pretty good. Maybe we should heed the advice that Woody Allen ignored for so long, and stick to the funny stuff.

VIDEO - Jake Kost "Keepin' It Cool" [Honest Hip Hop]

Jake Kost is a Portland rapper who works non-stop to elevate his style and tell stories that reflect all facets of reality. His punchlines play with street ideology, ambition, relationships and geopolitics with an intelligent swagger that shows depth beyond his years. "Keepin' It Cool" is a nice introduction to the young emcee over a classic Pete Rock beat ("The Boss" from PeteStrumentals), which goes to show the type of artists that influence his style. With his first offerings at this level of quality I'm looking forward to see what he does over fresh instrumentals on his official projects to come.

The homie Man Mantis is back with this single that veers into the EDM big bass territory while retaining the soulfull hip-hop groove that made his recent works Cities Without Houses and Sea Ambulance so engaging. Alot of the new bass music coming out now loses that groove in pursuit of ever more broken rhythms and fatter frequencies, so its refreshing to hear someone really merge the sounds in a cohesive jam. LyNC hit me up recently with his new video which I have now watched more than a few times. Super atmospheric, simple and direct, this video seems like his statement of where he's at and why he's here. He raps to the audience almost the whole time, in various locations that I assume make up some of the Inland Empire area in SoCal he hails from. I think he's got the balance right between the swagger of right now and the depth of content in his story - real asides about the inspiration he finds in his familys work ethic, the dream of success versus the reality of finding it.

YO - this is a short journey through the memories that brought about the music I make today. It requires reading for the next five minutes, perhaps with some follow-up exploration which is included at the end. Its fairly relevant and only takes a moment of your time. Here is the new Shermstixx single "Fun Summer" to enjoy as you read.

If you have been paying attention for a while then you well know that Shermstixx and DMLH START FIRES. When we were teenagers Shermstixx was my guide into the true history and knowledge of punkrock, while I became the only local source (in our small mountain region of Vermont)for in depth conversation on the history of Ska. He wore shirts ripped by time, I wore thriftstore suits. He wore a black knit beanie, I wore a pork pie hat. He put glue in his spikes, I used Murray's hair wax (or a razor for a while). We both wore boots, laced green for the home state.

We scoured record shops and college-radio signals for the music. This was in the mid nineties: the internet had just barely become image-based, Netscape was revolutionary and Yahoo battled Altavista for search supremacy. We piled together for trips to Boston, New York and Montreal for cultural cues, on pilgrimage to legendary clubs and hangouts. Burlington, Vermont, was a tour stop for most bands of the time, either at the 18+ Club Toast or the all ages 242. We lived for the music, for the connection it brought to the outside world, and the sense of history we found in identifying with the subculture.

After a few years in our small scene we became the college-radio djs, the players in the band, the kids with a guestlist and a growing network of friends. Our musical taste expanded as we explored hip hop, electronic, soul music, jazz, disco, continuing our autodidact education in 20th century music forms. Our own creative work and style soon encorporated these influences, and by the time we were living in Boston as adults, post-Napster but pre-Myspace, we were laying the foundation for START FIRES with honest, political raps over what Shermstixx had begun calling "space-age driveby muzik".

When I listen to the semi-live, basement-produced, collection of political and personal songs that make up the first START FIRES album "Dedicate Your Growth To The World", I find the influence of 70's ska and punk perhaps more prevalent than the immediately recognizable influence of electro and hip hop. Each song has a direct message, the energy is inclusive and loose, and we clearly produced it with the tools cobbled together on a nonexistent budget, learning to do it ourselves the whole time. These are the hallmarks of the worlds we studied from far away in the mountains, music at the forefront of its time, reaching its first peaks while we were still toddlers. For me, that means one thing: THIS ARE 2-TONE.

This little voyage through my memory was inspired by watching this documentary Shermstixx posted to his very informative blog "Resort to Cannabilism"

New music from Weather Exposed "Ghost Pedal" and "Ten Years" - Ambient, Instrumental Music from Portland, OR

Weather Exposed (aka multi-instrumentalist Jason Gray) has been creating deeply expressive music that pushes boundaries and breaks expectations in various forms for the past decade. As his material slowly comes out those of us listening have been able to hear the evolving process of an artist able to critique and challenge his own creative instincts. I've written about his music before, most recently his collaborative noise/ambient project Saudade (with the intrepid con artist Chris Cantino) and now always check in with his soundcloud to see what he is up to.

"Ghost Pedal" has a restful tone, looping guitar over soft radio static and unknown percussion. Not quite moving forward, though not retreating, the sound stays suspended in its own beautiful realm.

"Ten Years" sounds exactly like that. It builds steadily with repeated keyboard notes over deep passages of extended ambient tone. Is it a reflection on the past decade, or a mediation on the passage of time? It could be both or neither, creating a sonic space where either action would be at home.

Michael Griffith, who's 2010 release "A Thousand Swords & The Flooded Cave" was one of my favorite albums of that year, brought his guitar down to stand during the last moments of #occupyportland's eviction standoff. Surrounded by peaceful demonstrators of all ages chanting in the face of a massive force of riot police, Griff's understated voice sings to the tension and beauty of the peoples struggle to be heard. Documented by Portland's Into The Woods, this moment of tribute to community participation and sharing of voice is poignant for this time of change.

I have been working on this album for the past year. It has been a process of writing, performance, reflection, editing, writing, recording, listening, editing, writing, performance and recording. I am very pleased to have met Joe Cyrus who was kind enough to let me take home some of his beats and begin work on this project. We have found a mutual love for soul music and positive energy and it has led to some incredible songs and great times.

This album is many conversations at once. It is my response to Joe's production. It is my response to the music of my brother. It is my response to the multitudes of beauty i find in the creative communities I take part in. It is my response to a falling world. It is a statement of where I am at, so that I may someday recall the moment. It is a letter to the friends I've lost touch with, and even to those I see every day.

This is a remedy for a broken heart.

YES. THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. DMLH is finally releasing the full length album, and i'm not too proud to say it is fucking dope. For real, i am stoked on this project and it is the independent honest hip-hop I wanted it to be. Entirely produced by Joe Cyrus, the music is soulful and funky, classic hip hop style that provokes dancing in the club and nodding in the whip. Entirely written by DMLH, with a few quotes from friends just to say whats up. No guest appearances, this is 35 minutes of DMLHISM.

Actually Happening will be available on Tuesday May 3rd for download and physical mailorder. I am hand-collaging (with paint, stamps, pen and photobooth images) 200 cases for a limited release (signed and numbered of course) and this will be available exclusively in person or via my bandcamp page.

BUT WAIT, that is not all. This Friday May 6th, from 6-12, at the esteemed Launch Pad Gallery here in Portland OR, I am celebrating this release and the arts community I have become a part of. I have contacted 20+ artists who's work has inspired me in the course of making this album and asked them to create a response to the music. I could be a comment, a translation, an abstraction created while listening - anything that comes out of their relationship to what I have created.

New Album from The Height of 63 - "A Thousand Swords & The Flooded Cave"

The Height of 63 is Michael Griffith, aka Griff who slays keyboards in Archers. A Thousand Swords & The Flooded Cave is a long awaited collection of songs that have been growing for the past 8 years. In that time Griff has lived in SoCal, Geneva and Portland, all the while crafting a space for himself in the world he hears.

The album opens with the classic pop refrain "ah" repeating into spaciousness, and settles into oscillating 8bit frequencies. Griff follows this with "Clouds Burst", acoustic guitar and organs that build from a subtle strum into a heavy wash of emotion, over a sparse electronic beat. I dont feel as through I am well versed enough to talk properly about The Height of 63. There are so many layers of sound and tone, and Griff moves through them all with a timeless, seamless feeling. Sometimes this album sounds like waking up after a shipwreck, washed ashore in the seafoam.

Show Review: Eddie Valiant, Mt. Tabor Theater, Portland, OR 2.13.11

A few weeks ago, while hundreds of fans lined up around the block at Portland’s Mt Tabor Theater to see Del The Funky Homosapien, I was fortunate enough to be inside to catch the opening act, Portland locals Eddie Valiant. The house was already filling up by the time DJ Zone began to warm up the stage with some choice cuts. He was joined by a drummer and three vocalists, and it looked like we were in for a typical underground rap act.

Eddie Valiant is anything but typical. Max Graves (a rapper), David Mann (a singer), and Scotty Del (a vocalist who does both), belt out personal anthems and pop harmonies, while DJ Zone lays down beats that blur the lines between indie rock and hip hop, and Chase Pingree’s drums never stop carrying the momentum.

Graves’ rap voice speaks in stacatto bursts of confident poetry, like the hard truth smashing though the mundane. His stage presence is strength personified, power in the flux of restraint and release. David Mann’s vocals sing from the other side of the spectrum, reaching deep for emotive tones that ride the melody like a trip down the rabbit hole. He illustrates his lyrics with his actions, and comments on their meaning with his eyes. Scotty balances the combination, with a raw flow and singing voice that belie the truth in verses of everyday struggle for personal growth. From his words to his actions on stage its clear that this is not a front, this is his heart laid out in unapolagetic terms.

The production moves from hardcore hip hop to melodic indie rock and even into alt-pop territory. Bolstered by the live drums it had a huge portion of the crowd dancing by the end of their set, no small feat for an unknown opener in a huge, cold room. Every member of the group contributes parts to the music, so their mashup of sounds is a true reflection of the identities of the group.

I got a copy of their new EP from David, and bumped it on my ride home. It held the same huge energy of their set, and had me nodding to the shifting dynamic between the members of the group. It just came out this month on Taxidermy Records, and has already garnered a good bit of interest. With a mixtape download coming out in June, and a bunch of shows coming up over the next few months, he said the group is looking forward to a summer full of more awesome times, and I am stoked to see where it takes them.

Writing On The Wall - DMLH and Joe Cyrus Live at Launch Pad Gallery

Last September I was fortunate enough to be invited to partake in a live installation project at the Launch Pad Gallery in Portland. The idea behind the project was to create a space for words to flow freely, where people could interact with each other, the space, and the words that were created. It was an honor to be a part of this moment, and a great chance to introduce some Portland Hip Hop to a lot of new listeners.

The event was promoted with index-card sized flyers, and on the back they were blank, except for a tiny bit of text: "your word here". On the night of the event more cards were supplied, along with pens and markers, thumbtacks and yarn for connecting strands of thought. A 30 foot wall was offered to the crowd as a space to begin self organizing their words and those they came in contact with.

After this had gone on for some time we cranked up some beats and ran around with wireless mics, freestyling literally off the wall. It was one of the most enjoyable nights of my year, and really of my entire career as a performance artist. We went on like this for an hour, mixing in our songs with the freestyle, feeding off the vibe, even rapping according to words handed to us by the crowd.

DMLH Live Honest Hip Hop at The Pub at the End of the Universe - Portland, OR - 1/12/11

SO last week it was my homie Joe Cyrus birthday and we were celebrating, with a bunch of heads dropping new material and a badass freestyle cypher late in the night. In attendance was Daps, Gepetto, Abadawn, Wellis Fool, Diction One, Prime Source, Kable Roc, Gavin Theory and many more heads from the pdx scene (dont hate if i forgot you).

Anyway this guy who was there captured video of most of the night and caught my whole set in one take. I was losing my voice to this nasty cold that everyone in Portland has right now, so by the end of it its pretty much gone, but check it out, watch the whole thing or just skip through, this will give you an idea of where my songs are at these days, as I finish up and get ready for my album release party in May.

Weather Exposed Skeleton Music is the music of Jason Gray, on half of the acclaimed noise/ambient group Saudade (Arena Rock Rec.). WESM is his more personal, experiential music: washes of guitar and keyboard that reflect the open spaces he finds in the natural world that he seeks to keep balance with life in the city.
