At IndiVisible, discover a new perspective of American history by taking a look at the prejudice, laws, and twists of history that have often divided them from others. Uncover historical and contemporary stories of the lives of African-Native Americans, and learn how difficult questions of identity, belonging, and sovereignty are still being debated within Native communities today. IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas is the result of a collaboration between the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Smithsonian Institution Travelling Exhibition Service (SITES). Noontime weekday entertainment in the heart of downtown Dayton is back by popular demand. The Downtown Dayton Partnership and Montgomery County present The Square Is Where... , featuring free live entertainment on downtown's Courthouse Square. A variety of performers will take the stage around the noontime lunch hour on most Tuesdays through Fridays during the summer months (May 11 through September 14). Entertainment will include bands, dancers, Zumba exercise instruction, acoustic musicians, and more. Every Monday will be 'Game Day' on the Square. We provide cornhole, chess and checkers - you bring the friendly competition! Food vendors also will set up on Courthouse Square each weekday, allowing downtown workers and others to grab lunch and take in the live entertainment while enjoying the outdoors downtown. Strengthening the Mind of Faith The command to love God with all our hearts is well known and dominates the landscape for many churches. The command to love God with all our minds is often ignored or attacked. First Baptist Church Dayton responds to the anti-intellectual and anti-science bent of so many American churches with a new series called “Strengthening the Mind of Faith”. The series will cover major issues that confront the churches. Participants will hear arguments from all sides of each issue. You are invited to join us in loving God with our minds. Thursday Luncheon Series – All Thursday courses will be held at First Baptist Church, 111 W. Monument Ave., Dayton, OH 45402 from 12:00 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Rodney Wallace Kennedy is facilitator. Bring your lunch and join in the discussion. The Bible and Sexuality Churches in America are being torn apart over issues of sexuality. What a mess! The role of women in the church. Homosexuality. Marriage. Sexual scandals. Abortion. Birth control. Contraceptives. There are good people on all sides of the debates, but we have divisions no one knows how to heal. Here’s a chance to examine all sides of the sexuality debate among Christians. Join us for three sessions: April 26, May 3, May 10. Separation of Church and State: From Roger Williams to Rick Santorum Roger Williams and the Puritans had it out over separation of church and state in 1636. In many ways it remains the “great dispute” in American history. The issue was not settled then and it has not been settled now. Baptists, earliest supporters, and by some accounts, most responsible for religious liberty and the separation of church and state, have, in some Baptist groups, flip flopped like a dime store politician on the issue. Other Baptists still retain a firm commitment to separation of church and state. The Rev. Dr. Rodney Wallace Kennedy, lead pastor of First Baptist Church Dayton, is one such Baptist. “The wall of separation,” says Dr. Kennedy, “can’t be too high.” The class will last for three weeks: May 17, 24, 31. America, Christianity, and War America has been at war for eleven years and counting. During this extended period of war the public has not had to make any sacrifices. Men and women are dying but the war seems more like a video game here at home. What should Christians say and do about war? Are some wars just? Why do Americans have such negative reactions to pacifism? What is the relationship of violence to America? Join us for four sessions: July 12, 19, 26, August 2. The Environment, Global Warming, Christian Stewardship or The Rapture and the Violent End of the World The politics of science has never been more polarized. Some Christian groups have developed a strong anti-scientific mindset. Science truth claims are often depicted as “junk science.” What does Christian stewardship have to do with the planet, the environment? In what way does the theology of the “rapture” mitigate against a theology of stewardship and care for the planet? Join us for four sessions: August 9, 16, 23, 30. When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story.
