The U.S. Army Nurse Corps chief, Maj. Gen. Barbara R. Holcomb, discusses the shortage of medical professionals within Army Medicine as well as advancements like needleless IV systems and diabetic monitors.

The Pentagon – the most iconic, recognized military building in the world – celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2018. Ground was broken on September 11, 1941, and with the outbreak of war on December 7, 1941, construction rapidly accelerated. In a feat of American engineering and construction prowess, the building was completed in only 17 months and was dedicated on January 15, 1943. All of this took place while the United States was fully engaged in World War II.

The Pentagon is regarded as a national monument: when constructed it was seen as a modern engineering wonder – and still is. It is difficult to find a similar structure of such magnitude and functionality in the world built for such a purpose and on such a short timescale. The Pentagon’s influential standing stems from its position as headquarters of America’s military institutions; the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the four armed services.

The largest office building in the world, the Pentagon’s 17 miles of corridors are bustling with nearly 23,000 military and civilian personnel. The Pentagon is part of a 200-acre complex known as the “Pentagon Reservation.” It includes the Pentagon Library and Conference Center, the Pentagon Heating and Refrigeration Plant, the Pentagon Memorial, the Modular Office Complex, and the Reservation grounds and parking areas.

For 60 years DARPA has stimulated the imaginations and creativity of scientists and engineers the world over. The internet, the microprocessor, and GPS are just three of the thousands of groundbreaking achievements that have been spurred by DARPA investments. Without DARPA, the backbone of our modern society would not exist, and it is that passion and innovation that Faircount is proud to memorialize in this publication.

DARPA: Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency 1958-2018 looks at not only the groundbreaking paradigm-shifting successes of the past, but also at what is coming next. Working with DARPA’s researchers and Program Directors our team helped to chronicle DARPA’s next pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. Hypersonics, space, moving beyond Moore’s Law, and cybersecurity are just a handful of topics illuminated within the publication.

Interviews with the commanders of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), Naval Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWARCOM), and United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), describe present day challenges and future initiatives. As always, there is a review of developments in international SOF as well.

OPEN SPECIAL OPERATIONS OUTLOOK (Best on Tablet or Desktop)

Highlighting international SOF is an interview with French special operations command’s leader Rear Adm. Laurent Isnard. From the legislative branch, Congressman James Langevin (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Emerging Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, is asked to contribute his perspective on a number of SOF issues.

Marking its 75th anniversary, this year’s edition has a special focus on the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor of today’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). OSS coverage includes a history of Maj. Gen. Donovan’s “PhDs that could win a bar fight,” as well as a look at today’s OSS Society, and how it serves the legacy of the OSS and educates the public on its importance yesterday, today, and into the future.

Another historical feature details the 1918 Zeebrugge raid, which taught valuable lessons in what and what not to do in planning and executing a raid.

The newest developments in SOF carbines, handguns, personal defense weapons, and suppressors are covered, as well as the story of one pack maker’s collaborative efforts with SOF. Features include Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt’s views on State Department and DOD teamwork, and a description of a successful PSYOP on Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army.

Special Operations Outlook – previously titled The Year in Special Operations – will debut at the 2018 Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) May 21-24 in Tampa, Florida. Conference attendees should visit booth #1654 to pick up a free copy of the publication.

Women in the Armed Forces: A Century of Service captures the history of 100 years of women in the military, both formally and informally, dating back to the American Revolution.

In its recounting of people and events, Women in the Armed Forces describes how women sought to serve from the earliest days of the republic, and celebrates their service, sacrifices and accomplishments in breaking barriers and proving their worthiness on the front lines and in command. From their days of primarily working in administrative support and nursing duties, women have expanded their roles to commanding troops on the ground, in the air, and on the seas and from the highest offices to serving in military service occupations that were once off limits to females.

For 100 years, women have met the call of duty and exceeded expectations, and will continue to do so for the next hundred years.
